Mirror Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz for AdS3/CFT2

We consider superstrings on the pure-Ramond-Ramond $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ background. Using the recently-proposed dressing factors for the worldsheet S matrix, we formulate the string hypothesis for the mirror Bethe-Yang equations, and use it to derive the canonical mirror thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations of the model. For the first time, these equations account for all massive and massless modes of the model, and do not resort to any limit or special kinematics. We also discuss the simplified mirror TBA equations and the Y-system of the model.

We cannot believe we overlooked these Majorana discoveries

In 2011-2012 we performed experiments on hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowire devices which yielded signatures of Majorana fermions based on zero-bias peaks in tunneling measurements. The research field that grew out of those findings and other contemporary works has advanced significantly, and a lot of new knowledge and insights were gained. However, key smoking gun evidence of Majorana is still lacking. In this paper, we report that while reviewing our old data recently, armed with a decade of knowledge, we realized that back in 2012 our results contained two breakthrough Majorana discoveries. Specifically, we have observed quantized zero-bias peaks, the hallmark of ideal Majorana states. Furthermore, we have observed the closing and re-opening of the induced gap perfectly correlated with the emergence of the zero-bias peak - clear evidence of the topological quantum phase superconducting transition. These insights should pave the way to topological Majorana qubits, and you should also check supplementary information for important disclosures.

New Dressing Factors for AdS3/CFT2

The worldsheet S matrix of strings on the $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ background is almost entirely fixed by symmetries, up to five functions -- the dressing factors. These must satisfy several consistency conditions, in particular a set of crossing equations. We find that the existing proposal for the dressing factors, while crossing invariant, violates some of these consistency conditions. We put forward a new set of dressing factors and discuss in detail their analytic properties in the string and mirror region, as well as under bound-state fusion.

Puzzles of eta-deformed AdS_5 x S^5

We derive the part of the Lagrangian for the sigma model on the eta-deformed AdS_5 x S^5 space which is quadratic in fermions and has the full dependence on bosons. We then show that there exists a field redefinition which brings the corresponding Lagrangian to the standard form of type IIB Green-Schwarz superstring. Reading off the corresponding RR couplings, we observe that they fail to satisfy the supergravity equations of motion, despite the presence of kappa-symmetry. However, in a special scaling limit our solution reproduces the supergravity background found by Maldacena and Russo. Further, using the fermionic Lagrangian, we compute a number of new matrix elements of the tree level world-sheet scattering matrix. We then show that after a unitary transformation on the basis of two-particle states which is not one-particle factorisable, the corresponding T-matrix factorises into two equivalent parts. Each part satisfies the classical Yang-Baxter equation and coincides with the large tension limit of the q-deformed S-matrix.

Excited states in Bethe ansatz solvable models and the dressing of spin and charge

A general formalism for the study of excitations above equilibrium in Bethe ansatz solvable models is presented. Nonzero temperature expressions for dressed energy, momentum, spin and charge are obtained, and it is found that the dressed spin and charge are in general momentum dependent. For an electronic model one may only have spin-charge separation at zero temperature where the ground state is half-filled and has zero magnetisation. Finally, the excitations of the Hubbard-Shastry models are examined in detail.

Static Gauge and Energy Spectrum of Single-mode Strings in AdS_5xS^5

Motivated by the notorious difficulties in determining the first quantum corrections to the spectrum of short strings in AdS_5xS^5 from first principles, we study closed bosonic strings in this background employing a static gauge. In this gauge the world-sheet Hamiltonian density is constant along the extension of the string and directly proportional to the square of the spacetime energy. We quantize this system in a minisuperspace approach, in which we consider only a single AdS_5 string mode excitation next to an arbitrary particle like zero-mode contribution in the full AdS_5xS^5 background. We determine the quantum spectrum using this method to the next-to-next-to-leading order in the large 't Hooft coupling expansion. We argue for an ordering prescription which should arise from supersymmetrization and indeed recover the integrability based predictions for the spectrum of the lightest excitation, dual to the Konishi field scaling dimensions. The higher excitations fail to agree, but this is shown to be a consequence of the string mode truncation employed. Despite this simple setup, our system reveals intriguing features, such as a close connection to particles in AdS_6, classical integrability and preservation of the isometries of AdS_5xS^5 at the quantum level.

Exceptional Operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills

We consider one particularly interesting class of composite gauge-invariant operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. An exceptional feature of these operators is that in the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz approach the one-loop rapidities of the constituent magnons are shown to be exact in the 't Hooft coupling constant. This is used to propose the mirror TBA description for these operators. The proposal is shown to pass several non-trivial checks.

Hubbard-Shastry lattice models

We consider two lattice models for strongly correlated electrons which are exactly-solvable in one dimension. Along with the Hubbard model and the su(2|2) spin chain, these are the only parity-invariant models that can be obtained from Shastry's R-matrix. One exhibits itinerant ferromagnetic behaviour, while for the other the electrons form bound pairs and at half-filling the model becomes insulating. We derive the TBA equations for the models, analyze them at various limits, and in particular obtain zero temperature phase diagrams. Furthermore we consider extensions of the models, which reduce to the Essler-Korepin-Schoutens model in certain limits.

Scaling dimensions from the mirror TBA

The mirror TBA equations proposed by Arutyunov, Suzuki and the author are solved numerically up to 't Hooft's coupling $λ\approx 2340$ for several two-particle states dual to ${\cal N}=4$ SYM operators from the $\sl(2)$ sector. The data obtained for states with mode numbers $n=1,2,3,4$ is used to propose a general charge $J$ dependent formula for the first nonvanishing subleading coefficient in the strong coupling expansion of scaling dimensions. In addition we find that the first critical and subcritical values of the coupling for the $J=4, n=1$ operator are at $λ\approx 133$ and $λ\approx 190$, respectively.

Bound States in the Mirror TBA

The spectrum of the light-cone AdS_5 \times S^5 superstring contains states composed of particles with complex momenta including in particular those which turn into bound states in the decompactification limit. We propose the mirror TBA description for these states. We focus on a three-particle state which is a finite-size representative of a scattering state of a fundamental particle and a two-particle bound state and dual to an operator from the su(2) sector of N=4 SYM. We find that the analytic behavior of Y-functions differs drastically from the case of states with real momenta. Most importantly, Y_Q-functions exhibit poles in the analyticity strip which leads to the appearance of new terms in the formula for the energy of this state. In addition, the TBA equations are supplied by quantization conditions which involve Y_2. Considering yet another example of a three-particle state, we find that the corresponding quantization conditions do not even involve Y_1. Our treatment can be generalized to a wide class of states with complex momenta.

Comments on the Mirror TBA

We discuss various aspects of excited state TBA equations describing the energy spectrum of the AdS_5 \times S^5 strings and, via the AdS/CFT correspondence, the spectrum of scaling dimensions of N = 4 SYM local operators. We observe that auxiliary roots which are used to partially enumerate solutions of the Bethe-Yang equations do not play any role in engineering excited state TBA equations via the contour deformation trick. We further argue that the TBA equations are in fact written not for a particular string state but for the whole superconformal multiplet, and, therefore, the psu(2,2|4) invariance is built in into the TBA construction.

Exploring the mirror TBA

We apply the contour deformation trick to the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations for the AdS_5 \times S^5 mirror model, and obtain the integral equations determining the energy of two-particle excited states dual to N=4 SYM operators from the sl(2) sector. We show that each state/operator is described by its own set of TBA equations. Moreover, we provide evidence that for each state there are infinitely-many critical values of 't Hooft coupling constant λ, and the excited states integral equations have to be modified each time one crosses one of those. In particular, estimation based on the large L asymptotic solution gives λ\approx 774 for the first critical value corresponding to the Konishi operator. Our results indicate that the related calculations and conclusions of Gromov, Kazakov and Vieira should be interpreted with caution. The phenomenon we discuss might potentially explain the mismatch between their recent computation of the scaling dimension of the Konishi operator and the one done by Roiban and Tseytlin by using the string theory sigma model.

Konishi operator at intermediate coupling

TBA equations for two-particle states from the sl(2) sector proposed by Arutyunov, Suzuki and the author are solved numerically for the Konishi operator descendent up to 't Hooft's coupling lambda ~ 2046. The data obtained is used to analyze the properties of Y-functions and address the issue of the existence of the critical values of the coupling. In addition we find a new integral representation for the BES dressing phase which substantially reduces the computational time.

Foundations of the AdS_5 x S^5 Superstring. Part I

We review the recent advances towards finding the spectrum of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring. We thoroughly explain the theoretical techniques which should be useful for the ultimate solution of the spectral problem. In certain cases our exposition is original and cannot be found in the existing literature. The present Part I deals with foundations of classical string theory in AdS_5 x S^5, light-cone perturbative quantization and derivation of the exact light-cone world-sheet scattering matrix.

Temperature quantization from the TBA equations

We analyze the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations for the mirror model which determine the ground state energy of the light-cone AdS_5 x S^5 superstring living on a cylinder. The light-cone momentum of string is equal to the circumference of the cylinder, and is identified with the inverse temperature of the mirror model. We show that the natural requirement of the analyticity of the Y-functions leads to the quantization of the temperature of the mirror model which has never been observed in any other models.

The Dressing Factor and Crossing Equations

We utilize the DHM integral representation for the BES dressing factor of the world-sheet S-matrix of the AdS_5xS^5 light-cone string theory, and the crossing equations to fix the principal branch of the dressing factor on the rapidity torus. The results obtained are further used, in conjunction with the fusion procedure, to determine the bound state dressing factor of the mirror theory. We convincingly demonstrate that the mirror bound state S-matrix found in this way does not depend on the internal structure of a bound state solution employed in the fusion procedure. This welcome feature is in perfect parallel to string theory, where the corresponding bound state S-matrix has no bearing on bound state constituent particles as well. The mirror bound state S-matrix we found provides the final missing piece in setting up the TBA equations for the AdS_5xS^5 mirror theory.

Superstrings on AdS_4 x CP^3 as a Coset Sigma-model

According to the recent proposal by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena the N=6 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions has a 't Hooft limit whose holographic dual is described by type IIA superstings on AdS_4 x CP^3 background. We argue that the Green-Schwarz action for type IIA string theory on AdS_4 x CP^3 with kappa-symmetry partially fixed can be understood as a coset sigma-model on the same space supplied with a proper Wess-Zumino term. We construct the corresponding sigma-model Lagrangian and show that it is invariant under a local fermionic symmetry which for generic bosonic string configurations allows one to remove 8 out of 24 fermionic degrees of freedom. The remaining 16 fermions together with their bosonic partners should describe the physical content of AdS_4 x CP^3 superstring. As further evidence, we demonstrate that in the plane-wave limit the quadratic action arising from our model reproduces the one emerging from the type IIA superstring. The coset sigma-model is classically integrable which opens up the possibility to investigate its dynamics in a way very similar to the case of AdS_5 x S^5 superstrings.

The Zamolodchikov-Faddeev Algebra for AdS_5 x S^5 Superstring

We discuss the Zamolodchikov-Faddeev algebra for the superstring sigma-model on AdS_5 x S^5. We find the canonical su(2|2)^2 invariant S-matrix satisfying the standard Yang-Baxter and crossing symmetry equations. Its near-plane-wave expansion matches exactly the leading order term recently obtained by the direct perturbative computation. We also show that the S-matrix obtained by Beisert in the gauge theory framework does not satisfy the standard Yang-Baxter equation, and, as a consequence, the corresponding ZF algebra is twisted. The S-matrices in gauge and string theories however are physically equivalent and related by a non-local transformation of the basis states which is explicitly constructed.

On off-shell structure of open string sigma model

We analyze several problems related to off-shell structure of open string sigma model by using a combination of derivative expansion and expansion in powers of the fields. According to the sigma model approach to bosonic open string theory, the tachyon effective action $S(T)$ coincides with the renormalized partition function $Z(T)$ of sigma model on a disk, up to a term vanishing on shell. On the other hand, $Z(T)$ is a generating functional of perturbative open string scattering amplitudes. If $S(T) = Z(T)$, then there should be no contribution of exchange diagrams to string amplitudes computed using $S(T)$. We compute the cubic term in the effective action, and show that it vanishes if some but not all external legs are on shell, and, therefore, any exchange diagram involving the cubic term vanishes too. Then, we discuss a problem of turning on nonrenormalizable boundary interactions, corresponding to massive string modes. We compute the quadratic term for a symmetric tensor field, and show that despite nonrenormalizability of the model one can consistently remove all divergent terms, and obtain a quadratic action reproducing the on-shell condition for the field. We also briefly discuss fermionic (NS) sigma model, compute the tachyon quadratic term, and show that it reproduces the correct tachyon mass. We note that turning on a massive symmetric tensor field leads to the appearance of a term linear in it, which can be removed by adding a higher-derivative term to the boundary of the disc.
