On the contact mapping class group of the contactization of the $A_m$- Milnor fiber

We construct an embedding of the full braid group on $m+1$ strands $B_{m+1}$, $m \geq 1$, into the contact mapping class group of the contactization $Q \times S^1$ of the $A_m$-Milnor fiber $Q$. The construction uses the embedding of $B_{m+1}$ into the symplectic mapping class group of $Q$ due to Khovanov and Seidel, and a natural lifting homomorphism. In order to show that the composed homomorphism is still injective, we use a partially linearized variant of the Chekanov--Eliashberg dga for Legendrians which lie above one another in $Q \times \mathbb{R}$, reducing the proof to Floer homology. As corollaries we obtain a contribution to the contact isotopy problem for $Q \times S^1$, as well as the fact that in dimension $4$, the lifting homomorphism embeds the symplectic mapping class group of $Q$ into the contact mapping class group of $Q \times S^1$.

Hamiltonian Floer homology for compact convex symplectic manifolds

We construct absolute and relative versions of Hamiltonian Floer homology algebras for strongly semi-positive compact symplectic manifolds with convex boundary, where the ring structures are given by the appropriate versions of the pair-of-pants products. We establish the absolute and relative Piunikhin-Salamon-Schwarz isomorphisms between these Floer homology algebras and the corresponding absolute and relative quantum homology algebras. As a result, the absolute and relative analogues of the spectral invariants on the group of compactly supported Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms are defined.

Counting isotropic tangent lines of hypersurfaces

Consider the standard symplectic $(\RR^{2n}, ω_0)$, a point $p\in\RR^{2n}$ and an immersed closed orientable hypersurface $Σ\subset\RR^{2n}\minus\{p\}$, all in general position. We study the following passage/tangency question: how many lines in $\RR^{2n}$ pass through $p$ and tangent to $Σ$ parallel to the 1-dimensional characteristic distribution $\ker\left(ω_0\big|_{TΣ}\right)\subset TΣ$ of $ω_0$. We count each such line with a certain sign, and present an explicit formula for their algebraic number. This number is invariant under regular homotopies in the class of a general position of the pair $(p, Σ)$, but jumps (in a well-controlled way) when during a homotopy we pass a certain singular discriminant. It provides a low bound to the actual number of these isotropic lines.

Quantum homology of compact convex symplectic manifolds

We study the space of pseudo-holomorphic spheres in compact symplectic manifolds with convex boundary. We show that the theory of Gromov-Witten invariants can be extended to the class of semi-positive manifolds with convex boundary. This leads to a deformation of intersection products on the absolute and relative singular homologies. As a result, absolute and relative quantum homology algebras are defined analogously to the case of closed symplectic manifolds. In addition, we prove the Poincaré-Lefschetz duality for the absolute and relative quantum homology algebras.

Counting real curves with passage/tangency conditions

We study the following question: given a set P of 3d-2 points and an immersed curve G in the real plane R^2, all in general position, how many real rational plane curves of degree d pass through these points and are tangent to this curve. We count each such curve with a certain sign, and present an explicit formula for their algebraic number. This number is preserved under small regular homotopies of a pair (P, G), but jumps (in a well-controlled way) when in the process of homotopy we pass a certain singular discriminant. We discuss the relation of such enumerative problems with finite type invariants. Our approach is based on maps of configuration spaces and the intersection theory in the spirit of classical algebraic topology.

Integrating curvature: from Umlaufsatz to J^+ invariant

Hopf's Umlaufsatz relates the total curvature of a closed immersed plane curve to its rotation number. While the curvature of a curve changes under local deformations, its integral over a closed curve is invariant under regular homotopies. A natural question is whether one can find some non-trivial densities on a curve, such that the corresponding integrals are (possibly after some corrections) also invariant under regular homotopies of the curve in the class of generic immersions. We construct a family of such densities using indices of points relative to the curve. This family depends on a formal parameter q and may be considered as a quantization of the total curvature. The linear term in the Taylor expansion at q=1 coincides, up to a normalization, with Arnold's J^+ invariant. This leads to an integral expression for J^+.

Quasi-morphisms and symplectic quasi-states for convex symplectic manifolds

We use quantum and Floer homology to construct (partial) quasi-morphisms on the universal cover of the group of compactly supported Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms for a certain class of non-closed strongly semi-positive symplectic manifolds $(M,ω)$. This leads to construction of (partial) symplectic quasi-states on the space of continuous functions on $M$ that are constant near infinity. The work extends the results by Entov and Polterovich, which apply in the closed case.
