D-instanton Induced Superpotential

We use string field theory to fix the normalization of the D-instanton corrections to the superpotential involving the moduli fields of type II string theory compactified on an orientifold of a Calabi-Yau threefold in the absence of fluxes. We focus on $O(1)$ instantons whose only zero modes are the four bosonic modes associated with translation of the instanton in non-compact directions and a pair of fermionic zero modes associated with the two supercharges broken by the instanton. We work with a generic superconformal field theory and express our answer in terms of the spectrum of open strings on the instanton. We analyse the contribution of multi-instantons of this kind to the superpotential and argue that it vanishes when background fluxes are absent.

Theta series, wall-crossing and quantum dilogarithm identities

Motivated by mathematical structures which arise in string vacua and gauge theories with N=2 supersymmetry, we study the properties of certain generalized theta series which appear as Fourier coefficients of functions on a twisted torus. In Calabi-Yau string vacua, such theta series encode instanton corrections from $k$ Neveu-Schwarz five-branes. The theta series are determined by vector-valued wave-functions, and in this work we obtain the transformation of these wave-functions induced by Kontsevich-Soibelman symplectomorphisms. This effectively provides a quantum version of these transformations, where the quantization parameter is inversely proportional to the five-brane charge $k$. Consistency with wall-crossing implies a new five-term relation for Faddeev's quantum dilogarithm $Φ_b$ at $b=1$, which we prove. By allowing the torus to be non-commutative, we obtain a more general five-term relation valid for arbitrary $b$ and $k$, which may be relevant for the physics of five-branes at finite chemical potential for angular momentum.

$R^3$ index for four-dimensional $N=2$ field theories

In theories with $N=2$ supersymmetry on $R^{3,1}$, BPS bound states can decay across walls of marginal stability in the space of Coulomb branch parameters, leading to discontinuities in the BPS indices $Ω(γ,u)$. We consider a supersymmetric index $I$ which receives contributions from 1/2-BPS states, generalizing the familiar Witten index $Tr (-1)^F e^{-βH}$. We expect $I$ to be smooth away from loci where massless particles appear, thanks to contributions from the continuum of multi-particle states. Taking inspiration from a similar phenomenon in the hypermultiplet moduli space of $N=2$ string vacua, we conjecture a formula expressing $I$ in terms of the BPS indices $Ω(γ,u)$, which is continuous across the walls and exhibits the expected contributions from single particle states at large $β$. This gives a universal prediction for the contributions of multi-particle states to the index $I$. This index is naturally a function on the moduli space after reduction on a circle, closely related to the canonical hyperkähler metric and hyperholomorphic connection on this space.

Dualities and fivebrane instantons

We derive the fivebrane instanton corrections to the hypermultiplet moduli space $M_H$ of Calabi-Yau string vacua using S-duality symmetry of the type IIB formulation. The result is given in terms of a set of holomorphic functions on the twistor space of $M_H$. It contains not only all orders of the instanton expansion, but also takes into account the presence of D1-D(-1)-brane instantons. Furthermore, we provide a thorough study of the group of discrete isometries of $M_H$ and show that its closure requires a modification of certain symmetry transformations. After this modification, the fivebrane instantons are proven to be consistent with the full duality group.

First order gravity on the light front

We study the canonical structure of the real first order formulation of general relativity on a null foliation. We use a tetrad decomposition which allows to elegantly encode the nature of the foliation in the norm of a vector in the fibre bundle. The resulting constraint structure shows some peculiarities. In particular, the dynamical Einstein equations propagating the physical degrees of freedom appear in this formalism as second class tertiary constraints, which puts them on the same footing as the Hamiltonian constraint of the Ashtekar's connection formulation. We also provide a framework to address the issue of zero modes in gravity, in particular, to study the non-perturbative fate of the zero modes of the linearized theory. Our results give a new angle on the dynamics of general relativity and can be used to quantize null hypersurfaces in the formalism of loop quantum gravity or spin foams.

Fivebrane instantons, topological wave functions and hypermultiplet moduli spaces

We investigate quantum corrections to the hypermultiplet moduli space M in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II string theories, with particular emphasis on instanton effects from Euclidean NS5-branes. Based on the consistency of D- and NS5-instanton corrections, we determine the topology of the hypermultiplet moduli space at fixed string coupling, as previewed in arXiv:1009.3026. On the type IIB side, we compute corrections from (p,k)-fivebrane instantons to the metric on M (specifically, the correction to the complex contact structure on its twistor space Z) by applying S-duality to the D-instanton sum. For fixed fivebrane charge k, the corrections can be written as a non-Gaussian theta series, whose summand for k=1 reduces to the topological A-model amplitude. By mirror symmetry, instanton corrections induced from the chiral type IIA NS5-brane are similarly governed by the wave function of the topological B-model. In the course of this investigation we clarify charge quantization for coherent sheaves and find hitherto unnoticed corrections to the Heisenberg, monodromy and S-duality actions on M, as well as to the mirror map for Ramond-Ramond fields and D-brane charges.

Hypermultiplet metric and D-instantons

We use the twistorial construction of D-instantons in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II string theory to compute an explicit expression for the metric on the hypermultiplet moduli space affected by these non-perturbative corrections. In this way we obtain an exact quaternion-Kahler metric which is a non-trivial deformation of the local c-map. In the four-dimensional case corresponding to the universal hypermultiplet, our metric fits the Tod ansatz and provides an exact solution of the continuous Toda equation. We also analyze the fate of the curvature singularity of the perturbative metric by deriving an S-duality invariant equation which determines the singularity hypersurface after inclusion of the D(-1)-instanton effects.

On Partially Massless Theory in 3 Dimensions

We analyze the first-order formulation of the ghost-free bigravity model in three-dimensions known as zwei-dreibein gravity. For a special choice of parameters, it was argued to have an additional gauge symmetry and give rise to a partially massless theory. We provide a thorough canonical analysis and identify that whether the theory becomes partially massless depends on the form of the stability condition of the secondary constraint responsible for the absence of the ghost. Generically, it is found to be an equation for a Lagrange multiplier implying that partially massless zwei-dreibein gravity does not exist. However, for special backgrounds this condition is identically satisfied leading to the presence of additional symmetries, which however disappear at quadratic order in perturbations.

Quantum hypermultiplet moduli spaces in N=2 string vacua: a review

The hypermultiplet moduli space M_H in type II string theories compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold X is largely constrained by supersymmetry (which demands quaternion-Kählerity), S-duality (which requires an isometric action of SL(2, Z)) and regularity. Mathematically, M_H ought to encode all generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants on X consistently with wall-crossing, modularity and homological mirror symmetry. We review recent progress towards computing the exact metric on M_H, or rather the exact complex contact structure on its twistor space.

Wall-crossing, Rogers dilogarithm, and the QK/HK correspondence

When formulated in twistor space, the D-instanton corrected hypermultiplet moduli space in N=2 string vacua and the Coulomb branch of rigid N=2 gauge theories on $R^3 \times S^1$ are strikingly similar and, to a large extent, dictated by consistency with wall-crossing. We elucidate this similarity by showing that these two spaces are related under a general duality between, on one hand, quaternion-Kahler manifolds with a quaternionic isometry and, on the other hand, hyperkahler manifolds with a rotational isometry, further equipped with a hyperholomorphic circle bundle with a connection. We show that the transition functions of the hyperholomorphic circle bundle relevant for the hypermultiplet moduli space are given by the Rogers dilogarithm function, and that consistency across walls of marginal stability is ensured by the motivic wall-crossing formula of Kontsevich and Soibelman. We illustrate the construction on some simple examples of wall-crossing related to cluster algebras for rank 2 Dynkin quivers. In an appendix we also provide a detailed discussion on the general relation between wall-crossing and the theory of cluster algebras.

Fivebrane instantons in Calabi-Yau compactifications

We provide the last missing piece of the complete non-perturbative description of the low energy effective action emerging from Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II string theory --- NS5-brane instanton corrections to the hypermultiplet moduli space $M_H$. We find them using S-duality symmetry of the type IIB formulation. The result is encoded in a set of holomorphic functions on the twistor space of $M_H$ and includes all orders of the instanton expansion.

Modularity, Quaternion-Kahler spaces and Mirror Symmetry

We provide an explicit twistorial construction of quaternion-Kahler manifolds obtained by deformation of c-map spaces and carrying an isometric action of the modular group SL(2,Z). The deformation is not assumed to preserve any continuous isometry and therefore this construction presents a general framework for describing NS5-brane instanton effects in string compactifications with N=2 supersymmetry. In this context the modular invariant parametrization of twistor lines found in this work yields the complete non-perturbative mirror map between type IIA and type IIB physical fields.

N=2 Heterotic-Type II duality and bundle moduli

Heterotic string compactifications on a $K3$ surface $\mathfrak{S}$ depend on a choice of hyperkähler metric, anti-self-dual gauge connection and Kalb-Ramond flux, parametrized by hypermultiplet scalars. The metric on hypermultiplet moduli space is in principle computable within the $(0,2)$ superconformal field theory on the heterotic string worldsheet, although little is known about it in practice. Using duality with type II strings compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold, we predict the form of the quaternion-Kähler metric on hypermultiplet moduli space when $\mathfrak{S}$ is elliptically fibered, in the limit of a large fiber and even larger base. The result is in general agreement with expectations from Kaluza-Klein reduction, in particular the metric has a two-stage fibration structure, where the $B$-field moduli are fibered over bundle and metric moduli, while bundle moduli are themselves fibered over metric moduli. A more precise match must await a detailed analysis of $R^2$-corrected ten-dimensional supergravity.

Canonical structure of Tetrad Bimetric Gravity

We perform the complete canonical analysis of the tetrad formulation of bimetric gravity and confirm that it is ghost-free describing the seven degrees of freedom of a massless and a massive gravitons. In particular, we find explicit expressions for secondary constraints, one of which is responsible for removing the ghost, whereas the other ensures the equivalence with the metric formulation. Both of them have a remarkably simple form and, being combined with conditions on Lagrange multipliers, can be written in a covariant way.

Chiral description of ghost-free massive gravity

We propose and study a new first order version of the ghost-free massive gravity. Instead of metrics or tetrads, it uses a connection together with Plebanski's chiral 2-forms as fundamental variables, rendering the phase space structure similar to that of SU(2) gauge theories. The chiral description simplifies computations of the constraint algebra, and allows us to perform the complete canonical analysis of the system. In particular, we explicitly compute the secondary constraint and carry out the stabilization procedure, thus proving that in general the theory propagates 7 degrees of freedom, consistently with previous claims. Finally, we point out that the description in terms of 2-forms opens the door to an infinite class of ghost-free massive bi-gravity actions. Our results apply directly to Euclidean signature. The reality conditions to be imposed in the Lorentzian signature appear to be more complicated than in the usual gravity case and are left as an open issue.

D-instantons and twistors: some exact results

We present some results on instanton corrections to the hypermultiplet moduli space in Calabi-Yau compactifications of Type II string theories. Previously, using twistor methods, only a class of D-instantons (D2-instantons wrapping A-cycles) was incorporated exactly and the rest was treated only linearly. We go beyond the linear approximation and give a set of holomorphic functions which, through a known procedure, capture the effect of D-instantons at all orders. Moreover, we show that for a sector where all instanton charges have vanishing symplectic invariant scalar product, the hypermultiplet metric can be computed explicitly.

Self-dual Einstein Spaces, Heavenly Metrics and Twistors

Four-dimensional quaternion-Kahler metrics, or equivalently self-dual Einstein spaces M, are known to be encoded locally into one real function h subject to Przanowski's Heavenly equation. We elucidate the relation between this description and the usual twistor description for quaternion-Kahler spaces. In particular, we show that the same space M can be described by infinitely many different solutions h, associated to different complex (local) submanifolds on the twistor space, and therefore to different (local) integrable complex structures on M. We also study quaternion-Kahler deformations of M and, in the special case where M has a Killing vector field, show that the corresponding variations of h are related to eigenmodes of the conformal Laplacian on M. We exemplify our findings on the four-sphere S^4, the hyperbolic plane H^4 and on the "universal hypermultiplet", i.e. the hypermultiplet moduli space in type IIA string compactified on a rigid Calabi-Yau threefold.

Twistor Approach to String Compactifications: a Review

We review a progress in obtaining the complete non-perturbative effective action of type II string theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau manifold. This problem is equivalent to understanding quantum corrections to the metric on the hypermultiplet moduli space. We show how all these corrections, which include D-brane and NS5-brane instantons, are incorporated in the framework of the twistor approach, which provides a powerful mathematical description of hyperkahler and quaternion-Kahler manifolds. We also present new insights on S-duality, quantum mirror symmetry, connections to integrable models and topological strings.

c-map as c=1 string

We show the existence of a duality between the c-map space describing the universal hypermultiplet at tree level and the matrix model description of two-dimensional string theory compactified at a self-dual radius and perturbed by a sine-Liouville potential. It appears as a particular case of a general relation between the twistor description of four-dimensional quaternionic geometries and the Lax formalism for Toda hierarchy. Furthermore, we give an evidence that the instanton corrections to the c-map metric coming from NS5-branes can be encoded into the Baker-Akhiezer function of the integrable hierarchy.

Degenerate Plebanski Sector and Spin Foam Quantization

We show that the degenerate sector of Spin(4) Plebanski formulation of four-dimensional gravity is exactly solvable and describes covariantly embedded SU(2) BF theory. This fact ensures that its spin foam quantization is given by the SU(2) Crane-Yetter model and allows to test various approaches of imposing the simplicity constraints. Our analysis strongly suggests that restricting representations and intertwiners in the state sum for Spin(4) BF theory is not sufficient to get the correct vertex amplitude. Instead, for a general theory of Plebanski type, we propose a quantization procedure which is by construction equivalent to the canonical path integral quantization and, being applied to our model, reproduces the SU(2) Crane-Yetter state sum. A characteristic feature of this procedure is the use of secondary second class constraints on an equal footing with the primary simplicity constraints, which leads to a new formula for the vertex amplitude.

Heterotic-type II duality in twistor space

Heterotic string theory compactified on a K3 surface times T^2 is believed to be equivalent to type II string theory on a suitable Calabi-Yau threefold. In particular, it must share the same hypermultiplet moduli space. Building on the known twistorial description on the type II side, and on recent progress on the map between type II and heterotic moduli in the `double scaling' limit (where both the type II and heterotic strings become classical), we provide a new twistorial construction of the hypermultiplet moduli space in this limit which is adapted to the symmetries of the heterotic string. We also take steps towards understanding the twistorial description for heterotic worldsheet instanton corrections away from the double scaling limit. As a spin-off, we obtain a twistorial description of a class of automorphic forms of SO(4,n,Z) obtained by Borcherds' lift.

S-duality in Twistor Space

In type IIB string compactifications on a Calabi-Yau threefold, the hypermultiplet moduli space $M_H$ must carry an isometric action of the modular group SL(2,Z), inherited from the S-duality symmetry of type IIB string theory in ten dimensions. We investigate how this modular symmetry is realized at the level of the twistor space of $M_H$, and construct a general class of SL(2,Z)-invariant quaternion-Kahler metrics with two commuting isometries, parametrized by a suitably covariant family of holomorphic transition functions. This family should include $M_H$ corrected by D3-D1-D(-1)-instantons (with fivebrane corrections ignored) and, after taking a suitable rigid limit, the Coulomb branch of five-dimensional N=2 gauge theories compactified on a torus, including monopole string instantons. These results allow us to considerably simplify the derivation of the mirror map between type IIA and IIB fields in the sector where only D1-D(-1)-instantons are retained.

Spin Foams and Canonical Quantization

This review is devoted to the analysis of the mutual consistency of the spin foam and canonical loop quantizations in three and four spacetime dimensions. In the three-dimensional context, where the two approaches are in good agreement, we show how the canonical quantization à la Witten of Riemannian gravity with a positive cosmological constant is related to the Turaev-Viro spin foam model, and how the Ponzano-Regge amplitudes are related to the physical scalar product of Riemannian loop quantum gravity without cosmological constant. In the four-dimensional case, we recall a Lorentz-covariant formulation of loop quantum gravity using projected spin networks, compare it with the new spin foam models, and identify interesting relations and their pitfalls. Finally, we discuss the properties which a spin foam model is expected to possess in order to be consistent with the canonical quantization, and suggest a new model illustrating these results.

Critical Overview of Loops and Foams

This is a review of the present status of loop and spin foam approaches to quantization of four-dimensional general relativity. It aims at raising various issues which seem to challenge some of the methods and the results often taken as granted in these domains. A particular emphasis is given to the issue of diffeomorphism and local Lorentz symmetries at the quantum level and to the discussion of new spin foam models. We also describe modifications of these two approaches which may overcome their problems and speculate on other promising research directions.

On the topology of the hypermultiplet moduli space in type II/CY string vacua

By analyzing qualitative aspects of NS5-brane instanton corrections, we determine the topology of the hypermultiplet moduli space M_H in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II string theories at fixed value of the dilaton and of the Calabi-Yau metric. Specifically, we show that for fivebrane instanton couplings to be well-defined, translations along the intermediate Jacobian must induce non-trivial shifts of the Neveu-Schwarz axion which had thus far been overlooked. As a result, the Neveu-Schwarz axion parametrizes the fiber of a circle bundle, isomorphic to the one in which the fivebrane partition function is valued. In the companion paper arXiv:1010.5792, we go beyond the present analysis and take steps towards a quantitative description of fivebrane instanton corrections, using a combination of mirror symmetry, S-duality, topological string theory and twistor techniques.

TBA for non-perturbative moduli spaces

Recently, an exact description of instanton corrections to the moduli spaces of 4d N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories compactified on a circle and Calabi-Yau compactifications of Type II superstring theories was found. The equations determining the instanton contributions turn out to have the form of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. We explore further this relation and, in particular, we identify the contact potential of quaternionic string moduli space with the free energy of the integrable system and the Kahler potential of the gauge theory moduli space with the Yang-Yang functional. We also show that the corresponding S-matrix satisfies all usual constraints of 2d integrable models, including crossing and bootstrap, and derive the associated Y-system. Surprisingly, in the simplest case the Y-system is described by the MacMahon function relevant for crystal melting and topological strings.

The new vertices and canonical quantization

We present two results on the recently proposed new spin foam models. First, we show how a (slightly modified) restriction on representations in the EPRL model leads to the appearance of the Ashtekar-Barbero connection, thus bringing this model even closer to LQG. Second, we however argue that the quantization procedure used to derive the new models is inconsistent since it relies on the symplectic structure of the unconstraint BF theory.

Linear perturbations of quaternionic metrics

We extend the twistor methods developed in our earlier work on linear deformations of hyperkahler manifolds [arXiv:0806.4620] to the case of quaternionic-Kahler manifolds. Via Swann's construction, deformations of a 4d-dimensional quaternionic-Kahler manifold $M$ are in one-to-one correspondence with deformations of its $4d+4$-dimensional hyperkahler cone $S$. The latter can be encoded in variations of the complex symplectomorphisms which relate different locally flat patches of the twistor space $Z_S$, with a suitable homogeneity condition that ensures that the hyperkahler cone property is preserved. Equivalently, we show that the deformations of $M$ can be encoded in variations of the complex contact transformations which relate different locally flat patches of the twistor space $Z_M$ of $M$, by-passing the Swann bundle and its twistor space. We specialize these general results to the case of quaternionic-Kahler metrics with $d+1$ commuting isometries, obtainable by the Legendre transform method, and linear deformations thereof. We illustrate our methods for the hypermultiplet moduli space in string theory compactifications at tree- and one-loop level.

Quantum covariant c-map

We generalize the covariant c-map found in hep-th/0701214 including perturbative quantum corrections. We also perform explicitly the superconformal quotient from the hyperkahler cone obtained by the quantum c-map to the quaternion-Kahler space, which is the moduli space of hypermultiplets. As a result, the perturbatively corrected metric on the moduli space is found in a simplified form comparing to the expression known in the literature.

SO(4,C)-covariant Ashtekar-Barbero gravity and the Immirzi parameter

An so(4,C)-covariant hamiltonian formulation of a family of generalized Hilbert-Palatini actions depending on a parameter (the so called Immirzi parameter) is developed. It encompasses the Ashtekar-Barbero gravity which serves as a basis of quantum loop gravity. Dirac quantization of this system is constructed. Next we study dependence of the quantum system on the Immirzi parameter. The path integral quantization shows no dependence on it. A way to modify the loop approach in the accordance with the formalism developed here is briefly outlined.

c=1 from c<1: Bulk and boundary correlators

We study the c_L=25 limit, which corresponds to c=1 string theory, of bulk and boundary correlation functions of Liouville theory with FZZT boundary conditions. This limit is singular and requires a renormalization of vertex operators. We formulate a regularization procedure which allows to extract finite physical results. A particular attention is paid to c=1 string theory compactified at the self-dual radius R=1. In this case, the boundary correlation functions diverge even after the multiplicative renormalization. We show that all infinite contributions can be interpreted as contact terms arising from degenerate world sheet configurations. After their subtraction, one gets a well defined set of correlation functions. We also obtain several new results for correlation functions in Liouville theory at generic central charge.

On choice of connection in loop quantum gravity

We investigate the quantum area operator in the loop approach based on the Lorentz covariant hamiltonian formulation of general relativity. We show that there exists a two-parameter family of Lorentz connections giving rise to Wilson lines which are eigenstates of the area operator. For each connection the area spectrum is evaluated. In particular, the results of the su(2) approach turn out to be included in the formalism. However, only one connection from the family is a spacetime connection ensuring that the 4d diffeomorphism invariance is preserved under quantization. It leads to the area spectrum independent of the Immirzi parameter. As a consequence, we conclude that the su(2) approach must be modified accordingly to the results obtained since it breaks one of the classical symmetries.

SU(2) Loop Quantum Gravity seen from Covariant Theory

Covariant loop gravity comes out of the canonical analysis of the Palatini action and the use of the Dirac brackets arising from dealing with the second class constraints (``simplicity'' constraints). Within this framework, we underline a quantization ambiguity due to the existence of a family of possible Lorentz connections. We show the existence of a Lorentz connection generalizing the Ashtekar-Barbero connection and we loop-quantize the theory showing that it leads to the usual SU(2) Loop Quantum Gravity and to the area spectrum given by the SU(2) Casimir. This covariant point of view allows to analyze closely the drawbacks of the SU(2) formalism: the quantization based on the (generalized) Ashtekar-Barbero connection breaks time diffeomorphisms and physical outputs depend non-trivially on the embedding of the canonical hypersurface into the space-time manifold. On the other hand, there exists a true space-time connection, transforming properly under all diffeomorphisms. We argue that it is this connection that should be used in the definition of loop variables. However, we are still not able to complete the quantization program for this connection giving a full solution of the second class constraints at the Hilbert space level. Nevertheless, we show how a canonical quantization of the Dirac brackets at a finite number of points leads to the kinematical setting of the Barrett-Crane model, with simple spin networks and an area spectrum given by the SL(2,C) Casimir.

Timelike surfaces in Lorentz covariant loop gravity and spin foam models

We construct a canonical formulation of general relativity for the case of a timelike foliation of spacetime. The formulation possesses explicit covariance with respect to Lorentz transformations in the tangent space. Applying the loop approach to quantize the theory we derive the spectrum of the area operator of a two-dimensional surface. Its different branches are naturally associated to spacelike and timelike surfaces. The results are compared with the predictions of Lorentzian spin foam models. A restriction of the representations labeling spin networks leads to perfect agreement between the states as well as the area spectra in the two approaches.

Complex curves and non-perturbative effects in c=1 string theory

We investigate a complex curve in the $c=1$ string theory which provides a geometric interpretation for different kinds of D-branes. The curve is constructed for a theory perturbed by a tachyon potential using its matrix model formulation. The perturbation removes the degeneracy of the non-perturbed curve and allows to identify its singularities with ZZ branes. Also, using the constructed curve, we find non-perturbative corrections to the free energy and elucidate their CFT origin.

D-branes and complex curves in c=1 string theory

We give a geometric interpretation for D-branes in the c=1 string theory. The geometric description is provided by complex curves which arise in both CFT and matrix model formulations. On the CFT side the complex curve appears from the partition function on the disk with Neumann boundary conditions on the Liouville field (FZZ brane). In the matrix model formulation the curve is associated with the profile of the Fermi sea of free fermions. These two curves are not the same. The latter can be seen as a certain reduction of the former. In particular, it describes only (m,1) ZZ branes, whereas the curve coming from the FZZ partition function encompasses all (m,n) branes. In fact, one can construct a set of reductions, one for each fixed n. But only the first one has a physical interpretation in the corresponding matrix model. Since in the linear dilaton background the singularities associated with the ZZ branes degenerate, we study the c=1 matrix model perturbed by a tachyon potential where the degeneracy disappears. From the curve of the perturbed model we give a prediction how D-branes flow with the perturbation and derive the two-point bulk correlation function on the disk with the FZZ boundary conditions.
