The $ν$ EYE Neutrino Telescope: Conceptual Design Report

The {$\bfνEYE$} (``new eye'', Neutrino Experiment at YEmilab, \href{https://sites.google.com/korea.ac.kr/the-nueye-telescope} {\tt nuEYE.korea.ac.kr}) neutrino project leverages the existing large pit at Yemilab located in South Korea, to reveal the existence of sterile neutrino, the up-turn of the neutrinos from the Sun, and the first minimum of the neutrino oscillation over distances on the order of tens of kilometers for the first time. This initiative is expected to facilitate a wide range of significant scientific and technological advancements within both South Korean and international communities engaged in neutrino science and technology. The {$\bfνEYE$} aims to investigate the largely unexplored sector of almost-massless lepton in the elementary particle physics in detail. The emphasis will be placed on the study of real time nuclear processes and reactions involving possible sterile neutrinos on timescales down to nanoseconds in ultra-high intense or radioactive neutrino beams for the first time in the world; the {$\bfνEYE$} looks at to-be universal oscillation (``up-turn'' in the electron neutrino survival probability) of neutrinos predicted by the three neutrino oscillation paradigm. This will confirm or deny our current understanding on the particle interactions of the lepton sector; and measurement of the first oscillation minimum between the first and second neutrinos in mass.

Combined signatures of heavy Higgses and vectorlike fermions at the HL-LHC

In extensions of two Higgs doublet models with vectorlike quarks and leptons the decays of new scalars or fermions can be altered by the presence of the other, depending on the hierarchy of new physics. If new fermions are heavier than Higgses, their decays may be dominated by cascade decays through charged and neutral heavy Higgs bosons. In the opposite hierarchy, the decay of a heavy Higgs can lead to single production of vectorlike quarks and leptons when Yukawa couplings to SM fermions are present. We explore the resulting novel collider signatures in either case and present projected sensitivities of future runs of the LHC to the masses and branching ratios of new fermions and heavy Higgses. Importantly, we discuss kinematic challenges of the signatures and suggest strategic observables which could be adopted in future analyses. Interpreting the prospective reach of the LHC in the context of a type-II 2HDM, we find that in the presence of vectorlike fermions heavy Higgs boson masses slightly above 2 TeV can be explored at the HL-LHC even at low $\tanβ$. For heavy Higgs decays through vectorlike leptons, this reach extends to slightly above 3 TeV for $\tanβ\gtrsim 10$. Further, these search strategies imply a reach for vectorlike quark and lepton masses close to 2.4 TeV and 1.5 TeV, respectively. This article is partly based on Refs. [1-6]

Non-Standard Interaction of atmospheric neutrino in future experiments

We show the prospects of probing neutral-current non-standard interaction (NSI) in the propagation of atmospheric neutrinos in future large-volume neutrino experiments including DUNE, HK, KNO, and ORCA. For DUNE, we utilize its ability of identifying the tau neutrino event and combine the $ν_τ$ appearance with the $ν_μ$ disappearance. Based on our simulated results, the ten years of data taking of the atmospheric neutrinos can enormously improve the bounds on the NSI parameters $\varepsilon_{μτ}, | \varepsilon_{μμ} - \varepsilon_{ττ} |$, $\varepsilon_{e μ}$, $\varepsilon_{e τ}$ and $| \varepsilon_{μμ} - \varepsilon_{e e} |$ by a couple of orders of magnitudes. In addition, we show the expected correlations between the CP-violation phase $δ_{CP}$ and the NSI parameters $\varepsilon_{eμ}, \varepsilon_{eτ}$, and $|\varepsilon_{ee} - \varepsilon_{μμ}|$ and confirm the potentials of DUNE, HK, KNO (combined with HK) in excluding the "No CP violation" hypothesis at 1$σ$, 2$σ$, and 3$σ$, respectively.

Snowmass2021 Cosmic Frontier White Paper: Puzzling Excesses in Dark Matter Searches and How to Resolve Them

Intriguing signals with excesses over expected backgrounds have been observed in many astrophysical and terrestrial settings, which could potentially have a dark matter origin. Astrophysical excesses include the Galactic Center GeV gamma-ray excess detected by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, the AMS antiproton and positron excesses, and the 511 and 3.5 keV X-ray lines. Direct detection excesses include the DAMA/LIBRA annual modulation signal, the XENON1T excess, and low-threshold excesses in solid state detectors. We discuss avenues to resolve these excesses, with actions the field can take over the next several years.

Probing Energetic Light Dark Matter with Multi-Particle Tracks Signatures at DUNE

The search for relativistic scattering signals of cosmogenic light dark matter at terrestrial detectors has received increasing attention as an alternative approach to probe dark-sector physics. Large-volume neutrino experiments are well motivated for searches of dark matter that interacts very weakly with Standard Model particles and/or that exhibits a small incoming flux. We perform a dedicated signal sensitivity study for a detector similar to the one proposed by the DUNE Collaboration for cosmogenic dark-matter signals resulting from a non-minimal multi-particle dark-sector scenario. The liquid argon time projection chamber technology adopted for the DUNE detectors is particularly suited for searching for complicated signatures owing to good measurement resolution and particle identification, as well as $dE/dx$ measurements to recognize merged tracks. Taking inelastic boosted dark matter as our benchmark scenario that allows for multiple visible particles in the final state, we demonstrate that the DUNE far detectors have a great potential for probing scattering signals induced by relativistic light dark matter. Detector effects and backgrounds have been estimated and taken into account. Model-dependent and model-independent expected sensitivity limits for a DUNE-like detector are presented.

Cascade decays of Heavy Higgs bosons through vectorlike quarks

We study cascade decays of heavy neutral Higgs bosons through vectorlike quarks. We focus on scenarios where decay modes into pairs of vectorlike quarks are not kinematically open which extends the sensitivity of the LHC to larger masses. Assuming only mixing with the third family of standard model quarks the new decay modes of heavy Higgs bosons are: $H\to t_4 t \to Wbt, Zt t, ht t$ and $H\to b_4 b \to Wtb, Zb b, hb b$, where $t_4$ ($b_4$) is the new up-type (down-type) quark mass eigenstate. In the numerical analysis we assume the CP even Higgs boson in the two Higgs doublet model type-II but the signatures are relevant for many other scenarios. We identify the region of the parameter space where these decay modes are significant or can even dominate, and thus they provide the best opportunities for the simultaneous discovery of a new Higgs boson and vectorlike quarks. We further explore the reach of the High Luminosity LHC for two representative decay modes, $t_4\to Zt\to\ell\ell t$ and $b_4\to Zb\to\ell\ell b$, and found that cross sections at a 0.1 fb level can be probed with simple cut based analyses. We also find that the rates for Higgs cascade decays can be much larger than the rates for a single production of vectorlike quarks. Furthermore, the reach for vectorlike quarks in Higgs cascade decays and pair production extends to comparable masses.

Dark matter signals from timing spectra at neutrino experiments

We propose a novel strategy to search for new physics in timing spectra, envisioning the situation in which a new particle comes from the decay of its heavier partner with a finite particle width. The timing distribution of events induced by the dark matter particle scattering at the detector may populate in a relatively narrow range, forming a "resonance-like" shape. Due to this structural feature, the signal may be isolated from the backgrounds, in particular when the backgrounds are uniformly distributed in energy and time. For proof of the principle, we investigate the discovery potential for dark matter from the decay of a dark photon in the COHERENT experiment, and show the exciting prospects for exploring the associated parameter space with this experiment. We analyze the existing CsI detector data with a timing cut and an energy cut, and find, for the first time, an excess in the timing distribution which can be explained by such dark matter. We compare the sensitivity to the kinetic mixing parameter ($ε$) for current and future COHERENT experiments with the projected limits from LDMX and DUNE.

Hunting for Vectorlike Quarks

We analyze decays of vectorlike quarks in extensions of the standard model and a two Higgs doublet model. We identify several typical patterns of branching ratios of the lightest new up-type quark, $t_4$, and down-type quark, $b_4$, depending on the structure of Yukawa couplings that mix the vectorlike and standard model quarks (we assume only mixing with the third generation) and also on their doublet or singlet nature. We find that decays into heavy neutral or charged Higgs bosons, when kinematically open, can easily dominate and even be close to 100\%: $b_4\to H b$ at medium to large $\tan β$, $t_4\to H t$ at small $\tan β$ and $b_4\to H^\pm t$, $t_4\to H^\pm b$ at both large and small $\tan β$. The pair production of vectorlike quarks leads to $6 t$, $4t 2b$, $2t4b$ and $6b$ final states. The decay modes into $W$, $Z$ and $h$ follow the pattern expected from the Goldstone boson equivalence limit that we generalize to scenarios with all possible couplings. We also discuss in detail the structure of Yukawa couplings required to significantly deviate from the pattern characteristic of the Goldstone boson equivalence limit that can result in essentially arbitrary branching ratios.

Optimizing Energetic Light Dark Matter Searches in Dark Matter and Neutrino Experiments

Neutrino and dark matter experiments with large-volume ($\gtrsim 1$ ton) detectors can provide excellent sensitivity to signals induced by energetic light dark matter coming from the present universe. Taking boosted dark matter as a concrete example of energetic light dark matter, we scrutinize two representative search channels, electron scattering and proton scattering including deep inelastic scattering processes, in the context of elastic and inelastic boosted dark matter, in a completely detector-independent manner. In this work, a dark gauge boson is adopted as the particle to mediate the interactions between the Standard Model particles and boosted dark matter. We find that the signal sensitivity of the two channels highly depends on the (mass-)parameter region to probe, so search strategies and channels should be designed sensibly especially at the earlier stage of experiments. In particular, the contribution from the boosted-dark-matter-initiated deep inelastic scattering can be subleading (important) compared to the quasi-elastic proton scattering, if the mass of the mediator is below (above) $\mathcal{O}$(GeV). We demonstrate how to practically perform searches and relevant analyses, employing example detectors such as DarkSide-20k, DUNE, Hyper-Kamiokande, and DeepCore, with their respective detector specifications taken into consideration. For other potential detectors we provide a summary table, collecting relevant information, from which similar studies can be fulfilled readily.

Signals with six bottom quarks for charged and neutral Higgs bosons

In extensions of two Higgs doublet models with vectorlike quarks, the decays of vectorlike quarks may easily be dominated by cascade decays through charged or neutral Higgs bosons leading to signatures with 6 top or bottom quarks. Since top quark decays also contain bottom quarks, a common signature for many possible decay chains is 6 bottom quarks in the final state. We present a search strategy focusing on this final state and find the mass ranges of vectorlike quarks and Higgs bosons that can be explored at the Large Hadron Collider. Among other results, the sensitivity to the charged and neutral Higgs bosons, extending to about 2 TeV, stands out when compared to models without vectorlike matter.

New constraints and discovery potential for Higgs to Higgs cascade decays through vectorlike leptons

One of the cleanest signatures of a heavy Higgs boson in models with vectorlike leptons is $H\to e_4^\pm \ell^\mp \to h\ell^+\ell^-$ which, in two Higgs doublet model type-II, can even be the dominant decay mode of heavy Higgses. Among the decay modes of the standard model like Higgs boson, $h$, we consider $b \bar b$ and $γγ$ as representative channels with sizable and negligible background, respectively. We obtained new model independent limits on production cross section for this process from recasting existing experimental searches and interpret them within the two Higgs doublet model. In addition, we show that these limits can be improved by about two orders of magnitude with appropriate selection cuts immediately with existing data sets. We also discuss expected sensitivities with integrated luminosity up to 3 ab$^{-1}$ and present a brief overview of other channels.

New decay modes of heavy Higgs bosons in a two Higgs doublet model with vectorlike leptons

In models with extended Higgs sector and additional matter fields, the decay modes of heavy Higgs bosons can be dominated by cascade decays through the new fermions rendering present search strategies ineffective. We investigate new decay topologies of heavy neutral Higgses in two Higgs doublet model with vectorlike leptons. We also discuss constraints from existing searches and discovery prospects. Among the most interesting signatures are monojet, mono Z, mono Higgs, and Z and Higgs bosons produced with a pair of charged leptons.

Secluded singlet fermionic dark matter driven by the Fermi gamma-ray excess

We examine the possibility that the dark matter (DM) interpretation of the GeV scale Fermi gamma-ray excess at the Galactic Center can be realized in a specific framework - secluded singlet fermionic dark matter model with small mixing between the dark and Standard Model sector. Within this framework it is shown that the DM annihilation into bottom-quark pair, Higgs pair, and new scalar pair can give good fits to the Fermi gamma-ray data. Moreover unavoidable constraints from the antiproton ratio by the PAMELA and AMS-02, the gamma-ray emission from the dwarf spheroidal galaxies by the Fermi-LAT, and the Higgs measurements by the LHC are also considered. Then we found our best-fit parameters for the Fermi gamma-ray excess without conflicting other experimental and cosmological constraints if uncertainties on the DM density profile of the Milky Way Galaxy are taken into account. Successfully surviving parameters are benchmark points for future study on the collider signals.

Two Higgs doublet model with vectorlike leptons and contributions to $pp\to WW$ and $H\to WW$

We study a two Higgs doublet model extended by vectorlike leptons mixing with one family of standard model leptons. Generated flavor violating couplings between heavy and light leptons can dramatically alter the decay patterns of heavier Higgs bosons. We focus on $pp \to H \to ν_4 ν_μ\to W μν_μ$, where $ν_4$ is a new neutral lepton, and study possible effects of this process on the measurements of $pp \to WW$ and $H \to WW$ since it leads to the same final states. We discuss predictions for contributions to $pp \to WW$ and $H \to WW$ and their correlations from the region of the parameter space that satisfies all available constraints including precision electroweak observables and from pair production of vectorlike leptons. Large contributions, close to current limits, favor small $\tan β$ region of the parameter space. We find that, as a result of adopted cuts in experimental analyses, the contribution to $pp \to WW$ can be an order of magnitude larger than the contribution to $H \to WW$. Thus, future precise measurements of $pp\to WW$ will further constrain the parameters of the model. In addition, we also consider possible contributions to $pp\to WW$ from the heavy Higgs decays into a new charged lepton $e_4$ ($H\to e_4 μ\to W μν_μ$), exotic SM Higgs decays, and pair production of vectorlike leptons.

Contributions of flavor violating couplings of a Higgs boson to $pp\to WW$

We study contributions to $pp\to W^+W^- \to \ellν_\ell \ell^\primeν_{\ell^\prime}$ in models with a new Higgs boson, $H$, and a neutral lepton, $ν_{4}$, with couplings $H-ν_{4}-ν_μ$ and $W-ν_{4}-μ$ through the process $pp \to H \to ν_4 ν_μ\to W μν_μ\to \ellν_\ell μν_μ$. Contrary to naive expectations, we find that contributions to $pp\to WW$ can be very large while satisfying constraints from standard $H\to WW$ and $H\toγγ$ searches. Even the excess observed by ATLAS in $pp\to WW$, if taken at face value, can be easily accommodated. The various kinematic distributions fit nicely the experimentally determined ones. This scenario can arise for example in a two Higgs doublet model with vectorlike leptons.

A New Avenue to Charged Higgs Discovery in Multi-Higgs Models

Current searches for the charged Higgs at the LHC focus only on the $τν$, $cs$, and $tb$ final states. Instead, we consider the process $pp\to Φ\to W^\pm H^\mp \to W^+ W^- A$ where $Φ$ is a heavy neutral Higgs boson, $H^\pm$ is a charged Higgs boson, and $A$ is a light Higgs boson, with mass either below or above the $b\bar{b}$ threshold. The cross-section for this process is typically large when kinematically open since $H^\pm \to W^\pm A$ can be the dominant decay mode of the charged Higgs. The final state we consider has two leptons and missing energy from the doubly leptonic decay of the $W^+ W^-$ and possibly additional jets; it is therefore constrained by existing SM Higgs searches in the $W^+ W^-$ channel. We extract these constraints on the cross-section for this process as a function of the masses of the particles involved. We also apply our results specifically to a type-II two Higgs doublet model with an extra Standard-Model-singlet and obtain new and powerful constraints on $m_{H^\pm}$ and $\tanβ$. We point out that a slightly modified version of this search, with more dedicated cuts, could be used to possibly discover the charged Higgs, either with existing data or in the future.

Effects of vectorlike leptons on $h\to 4\ell$ and the connection to the muon g-2 anomaly

The mixing of new vectorlike leptons with leptons in the standard model can generate flavor violating couplings of $h$, $W$ and $Z$ between heavy and light leptons. Focusing on the couplings of the muon, the partial decay width of $h\to e_4^\pm μ^\mp$, where $e_4$ is the new lepton, can be significant when this process is kinematically allowed. Subsequent decays $e_4^\pm \to Zμ^\pm$ and $e_4^\pm \to W^\pm ν$ lead to the same final states as $h \to ZZ^* \to Z μ^+μ^-$ and $h \to WW^* \to W μν$, thus possibly affecting measurements of these processes. We calculate $h\to e_4 \ell_i \to Z\ell_i\ell_j$, where $\ell_{i,j}$ are standard model leptons, including the possibility of off-shell decays, interference with $h\to ZZ^* \to Z \ell_i \ell_i$, and the mass effect of $\ell_{i,j}$ which are important when the mass of $e_4$ is close to the mass of the Higgs boson. We derive constraints on masses and couplings of the heavy lepton from the measurement of $h\to 4\ell$. We focus on the couplings of the muon and discuss possible effects on $h\to ZZ^*$ from the region of parameters that can explain the anomaly in the measurement of the muon g-2.

Limits on Vectorlike Leptons from Searches for Anomalous Production of Multi-Lepton Events

We consider extensions of the Standard Model by vectorlike leptons and set limits on a new charged lepton, $e_4^\pm$, using the ATLAS search for anomalous production of multi-lepton events. It is assumed that only one Standard Model lepton, namely the muon, dominantly mixes with vectorlike leptons resulting in possible decays $e_4^\pm \to W^\pm ν_μ$, $e_4^\pm \to Zμ^\pm$, and $e_4^\pm \to h μ^\pm$. We derive generally applicable limits on the new lepton treating the branching ratios for these processes as free variables. We further interpret the general limits in two scenarios with $e_4^\pm$ originating predominantly from either the $SU(2)$ doublet or the $SU(2)$ singlet. The doublet case is more constrained as a result of larger production cross-section and extra production processes $e_4^\pm ν_4$ and $ν_4ν_4$ in addition to $e_4^+ e_4^-$, where $ν_4$ is a new neutral state accompanying $e_4$. We find that some combinations of branching ratios are poorly constrained, whereas some are constrained up to masses of more than 500 GeV. In the doublet case, assuming BR$(ν_4\rightarrow Wμ) = 1$, all masses below about 300 GeV are ruled out. Even if this condition is relaxed and additional decay modes, $ν_4 \to Z ν_μ$ and $ν_4 \to h ν_μ$, are allowed, below the Higgs threshold still almost all of the parameter space (of independent branching ratios) is ruled out. Nevertheless, even assuming the maximal production cross-section, which coincides with the doublet case, the new charged lepton can still be as light as the LEP-II limit allows. We discuss several possible improvements of current experimental analyses that would dramatically reduce the allowed parameter space, even with current data.

D0 dimuon charge asymmetry from B_s system with Z' couplings and the recent LHCb result

The D0 collaboration has announced the observation of the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry since 2010, which has more than 3σdeviation from the Standard Model prediction. One of the promising explanation is considering the existence of flavor changing Z' couplings to the b and s quarks which can contribute to the off-diagonal decay width in the B_s - \bar{B}_s mixing. Model construction is highly constrained by the recent LHCb data of 1fb^{-1} integrated luminosity . In this paper, we analyze the experimental constraints in constructing new physics models to explain the dimuon charge asymmetry from the CP violation of the B_s system. We present limits on Z' couplings and show that it is impossible to obtain the 1σrange of the dimuon charge asymmetry without the new contribution in the B_d system. Even with arbitrary contribution in the B_d system, the new couplings must be in the fine tuned region.

Z' from SU(6)$\times$SU(2)_h GUT, Wjj anomaly and Higgs boson mass bound

A general electroweak scale $Z'$ is applied in a supersymmetric SU(6)$\timesSU(2)_h$ grand unification model, to have a $\Z_6$ for the hexality. We briefly show that there cannot exist any baryonic U(1)$'_B$ in any subgroup of E$_6$. Any effect that requires sizable $Z'$ couplings to quarks like the reported Wjj anomaly of CDF, if observed, implies a substantial $Z'$ coupling to leptons or Higgs doublets. The kinetic mixing considered in a supersymmetric model from E$_6$ is restricted by the gauge coupling unification and neutrino mixing. The mass of $Z'$ is strongly constrained by the electroweak $ρ_0$ parameter. We conclude that $Z'$ mass much above 10 TeV is favored by considering the neutrino mixing and proton decay constraint in supersymmetric models. In this sense, the CDF $Wjj$ anomaly cannot be fitted to any electroweak model descending from E$_6$. Furthermore, if $Z'$ is found at several hundred GeV, any grand unification group embedded in E$_6$ such as SU(6)$\times$SU(2), SO(10), SU(5)$\times$U(1), SU(5), SU(4)$\times$SU(4), and SU(3)$^3$, needs fine-tuned gauge couplings. We also discuss the U(1)$'$ effect on the tree level mass of the lightest MSSM Higgs boson.

The D0 same-charge dimuon asymmetry and possibile new CP violation sources in the $B_s-\bar{B}_s$ system

Recently, the D0 collaboration reported a large CP violation in the same-sign dimuon charge asymmetry which has the $3.2 σ$ deviation from the value estimated in the Standard Model. In this paper, several new physics models are considered: the MSSM, two Higgs doublet model, the recent dodeca model, and a new $Z'$ model. Generally, it is hard to achieve such a large CP violation consistently with other experimental constraints. We find that a scheme with extra non-anomalous U(1)$'$ gauge symmetry is barely consistent. In general, the extra $Z'$ gauge boson induces the flavor changing neutral current interactions at tree level, which is the basic reason allowing a large new physics CP violation. To preserve the U(1)$'$ symmetry at high energy, SU(2)$_L$ singlet exotic heavy quarks of mass above 1 TeV and the Standard Model gauge singlet scalars are introduced.

Light neutralino dark matter in light Higgs scenario related with the CoGeNT and DAMA/LIBRA results

Recently, the CoGeNT collaboration reported the WIMP candidate signal events exceeding the known backgrounds where the light WIMP with large cross section is supported. Motivated by this issue, we analyze a light neutralino dark matter scenario with a very light CP-even Higgs mediation in the elastic scattering process, which provides the mass and direct detection cross section to explain the CoGeNT result. To be compatible with the result of other experiments such as LEP and B-factories, the light CP-even Higgs is favored to be in 9 to 10 GeV. Such a scenario can be realized in the "Beyond the MSSM" context. The relic abundance consistent with the WMAP result can be obtained when twice of neutralino mass is close to the light Higgs mass via the resonance enhancement of the annihilation cross section. As a result, the neutralino mass is predicted to be at around 5 to 6 GeV.

Singlet Fermionic Dark Matter explains DAMA signal

It has been suggested that, considering channeling effect, the order of a few GeV dark matters which are elastically scattered from detector nuclei might be plausible candidates reconciling the DAMA annual modulation signal with the results of other null experiments. We show that Singlet Fermionic Dark Matter can be such a dark matter candidate, simultaneously providing the correct thermal relic density which is consistent with the WMAP data.
