Sommerfeld half-space problem revisited: Short-wave asymptotic solutions

A method for solving the half-space Sommerfeld problem is proposed, which allows us to obtain exact solutions in the form of Sommerfeld integrals, as well as their short-wave asymptotics. The first carried out by reducing the Sommerfeld problem to solving a system of equations to surface current densities on an interface of media in the Fourier transform domain. The second is provided by the modified saddle point method using an etalon integral. Careful attention pays the integration technique of the Sommerfeld integrals. The uniformly regular for any observation angles expressions of all types of waves, such as space, surface, and lateral, are obtained. The simple asymptotic expressions for the reflected and transmitted space waves are found via a source field, bearing in mind the Fresnel coefficients. The asymptotic expressions for the space waves checked by the law of conservation of energy flux. The issue of the existence of surface waves analyzed in detail. The analysis and physical interpretation of the obtained expressions, as well as the applicability conditions, are carried out. The Sommerfeld integrals evaluated in closed form.

The Evaluation of a Novel Asymptotic Solution to the Sommerfeld Radiation Problem using an Efficient Method for the Calculation of Sommerfeld Integrals in the Spectral Domain

In this work, a recently developed novel solution of the famous "Sommerfeld Radiation Problem" is revisited. The solution is based on an analysis performed entirely in the spectral domain, through which a compact asymptotic formula describes the behavior of the EM field, which emanates from a vertical Hertzian radiating dipole, located above flat, lossy ground. The paper is divided into two parts. First, we demonstrate an efficient technique for the accurate numeric calculation of the well - known Sommerfeld integrals, required for the evaluation of the field. The results are compared against alternative calculation approaches and validated with the corresponding Norton figures for the Surface Wave. Then, in the second part, we briefly introduce the asymptotic solution of interest and investigate its performance; we contrast the solution versus the accurate numerical evaluation for the total received EM field and also with a more basic asymptotic solution to the given problem, obtained via the application of the Stationary Phase Method (SPM). Simulations for various frequencies, distances, altitudes and ground characteristics are illustrated and inferences for the applicability of the solution are made. Finally, special cases, leading to analytic field expressions, close as well as far from the interface, are examined.

A closed form analytical solution to the radiation problem from a short dipole antenna above flat ground using spectral domain approach

In this paper we consider the problem of radiation from a vertical short dipole above flat ground with losses, which represents the well known in the literature Sommerfeld radiation problem. We end up with a closed form analytical solution to the above problem for the received electric and magnetic field vectors above the ground in the far field area. The method of solution is formulated in the spectral domain, and by inverse three dimensional Fourier transformation and subsequent application of the Stationary Phase Method the final solutions in the physical space are derived. To our knowledge, the above closed form solutions are novel in the literature for the Sommerfeld radiation problem. Finally, the physical interpretation for the received fields formulae derived this paper are provided.
