Simple Bulk Reconstruction in AdS/CFT Correspondence

In this paper, we show that the bulk reconstruction in the AdS/CFT correspondence is rather simple and has an intuitive picture, by showing that the HKLL bulk reconstruction formula can be simplified. We also reconstruct the wave packets in the bulk theory from the CFT primary operators. With these wave packets, we discuss the causality and duality constraints and find our picture is only the consistent one. Our picture of the bulk reconstruction can be applied to the asymptotic AdS spacetime.

The colored Jones polynomials as vortex partition functions

We construct 3D $\mathcal{N}=2$ abelian gauge theories on $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^1$ labeled by knot diagrams whose K-theoretic vortex partition functions, each of which is a building block of twisted indices, give the colored Jones polynomials of knots in $\mathbb{S}^3$. The colored Jones polynomials are obtained as the Wilson loop expectation values along knots in $SU(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge theories on $\mathbb{S}^3$, and then our construction provides an explicit correspondence between 3D $\mathcal{N}=2$ abelian gauge theories and 3D $SU(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge theories. We verify, in particular, the applicability of our constructions to a class of tangle diagrams of 2-bridge knots with certain specific twists.

Large N behavior of mass deformed ABJM theory

In this paper, using the localization technique we analyze the large N limit of the mass deformed Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) theory on the three sphere with a finite mass parameter and finite Chern-Simons levels. We find two different solutions of the saddle point equations in the large N limit. With these solutions we compute the free energy and find that there is a first order phase transition. Our results may predict a phase transition in the dual gravity theory.

Brick Walls for Black Holes in AdS/CFT

We study the 't Hooft's brick wall model for black holes in a holographic context. The brick wall model suggests that without an appropriate near horizon IR cut-off, the free energy of the probe fields show the divergence due to the large degenerate states near the horizons. After studying the universal nature of the divergence in various holographic setting in various dimensions, we interpret the nature of the divergence in a holographic context. The free energy divergence is due to the large degeneracy and continuity of the low energy spectrum in the boundary theory at the deconfinement phase. These divergence and continuity should be removed by finite N effects, which make the spectrum discrete even at the deconfinement phase. On the other hand, in the bulk, these degenerate states are localized near the horizon, and the universal divergence of these degenerate states implies that the naive counting of the degrees of freedom in bulk should be modified once we take into account the non-perturbative quantum gravity effects near the horizon. Depending on the microscopic degrees of freedom, the position, where the effective field theory description to count the states breaks down, has different Planck scale dependence. It also implies the difficulty to have an electron like gauge-singlet elementary field in the boundary theory Lagrangian. These singlet fields are at most composite fields, because they show divergent free energy, suggesting a positive power of N at the deconfinement phase.

Exact Path Integral for 3D Quantum Gravity

Three dimensional Euclidean pure gravity with a negative cosmological constant can be formulated in terms of the Chern-Simons theory, classically. This theory can be written in a supersymmetric way by introducing auxiliary gauginos and scalars. We calculate the exact partition function of this Chern-Simons theory by using the localization technique. Thus, we obtain the quantum gravity partition function, assuming that it can be obtained non-perturbatively by summing over partition functions of the Chern-Simons theory on topologically different manifolds. The resultant partition function is modular invariant, and in the case in which the central charge is expected to be 24, it is the J-function, predicted by Witten.

Exact Path Integral for 3D Quantum Gravity II

Continuing the work arXiv:1504.05991, we discuss various aspects of three dimensional quantum gravity partition function in AdS in the semi-classical limit. The partition function is holomorphic and is the one which we obtained by using the localization technique of Chern-Simons theory in arXiv:1504.05991. We obtain a good expression for it in the summation form over Virasoro characters for the vacuum and primaries. A key ingredient for that is an interpretation of boundary localized fermion. We also check that the coefficients in the summation form over Virasoro characters of the partition function are positive integers and satisfy the Cardy formula. These give physical interpretation that these coefficients represent the number of primary fields in the dual CFT in the large k limit.

Ramond-Ramond couplings of D-branes

Applying supersymmetric localization for superstring worldsheet theory with N=(1,1) supersymmetries on a cylinder and with arbitrary boundary interactions, we find the most general formula for the Ramond-Ramond (RR) coupling of D-branes. We allow all massive excitations of open superstrings, and find that only a finite number of them can contribute to the formula. The formula is written by Quillen's superconnection which includes higher form gauge fields, and the resultant general Chern-Simons terms are consistent with RR charge quantization. Applying the formula to boundary string field theory of a BPS D9-brane or a D9-antiD9 brane system, we find that any D9-brane creation via massive mode condensation is impossible.

Integrability of BPS equations in ABJM theory

We investigate BPS equations which determine the configuration of an M2-M5 bound state preserving half of the supersymmetries in the ABJM theory. We argue that the BPS equations are classically integrable, showing that they admit a Lax representation. The integrable structure of the BPS equations is closely related to that of the Nahm equations. Using this relation we formulate an efficient way of constructing solutions of the BPS equations from those of the Nahm equations. As an illustration of our method, we construct explicitly the most general solutions describing two M2-branes suspended between two parallel M5-branes as well as two semi-infinite M2-branes ending on an M5-brane. These include previously unknown new solutions. We also discuss a reduction of the BPS equations in connection with the periodic Toda chain.

Supersymmetric Gauge Theories on a Squashed Four-Sphere

We define a squashed four-sphere by a dimensional reduction of a twisted S^4 x S^1, and construct explicitly a supersymmetric Yang-Mills action on it. The action includes a non-trivial dilaton factor and a theta term with a non-constant theta. The partition function of this theory is calculated using the localization technique. The resulting partition function can be written in the form consistent with the AGT relation due to the non-constant theta term. The parameter b which characterizes the partition function in this form is not restricted to be real for the squashed four-sphere.

M5-branes in ABJM theory and Nahm equation

We construct BPS solutions representing M2-M5 bound state in the ABJM action explicitly. They include the funnel type solutions and 't Hooft Polyakov monopole solutions. Furthermore, we give a one to one correspondence between the solutions of the BPS equation and the ones of an extended Nahm equation which includes the Nahm equation. This enables us to construct infinitely many conserved quantities from the Lax form of the Nahm equation.

Supersymmetric Gauge Theories on the Five-Sphere

We construct Euclidean 5d supersymmetric gauge theories on the five-sphere with vector and hypermultiplets. The SUSY transformation and the action are explicitly determined from the standard Noether procedure as well as from off-shell supergravity. Using localization techniques, the path-integral is shown to be restricted to the integration over a generalization of instantons on CP^2 and the Coulomb moduli.

Emergent AdS_3 in the Zero Entropy Extremal Black Holes

We investigate the zero entropy limit of the near horizon geometries of D=4 and D=5 general extremal black holes with SL(2,R)xU(1)^{D-3} symmetry. We derive some conditions on the geometries from expectation of regularity. We then show that an AdS_3 structure emerges in a certain scaling limit, though the periodicity shrinks to zero. We present some examples to see the above concretely. We also comment on some implications to the Kerr/CFT correspondence.

On Effective Action of Multiple M5-branes and ABJM Action

We calculate the fluctuations from the classical multiple M5-brane solution of ABJM action which we found in the previous paper. We obtain D4-brane-like action but the gauge coupling constant depends on the spacetime coordinate. This is consistent with the expected properties of M5-brane action, although we will need to take into account the monopole operators in order to fully understand M5-branes. We also see that the Nambu-Poisson bracket is hidden in the solution.

On Non-Chiral Extension of Kerr/CFT

We discuss possible non-chiral extension of the Kerr/CFT correspondence. We first consider the near horizon geometry of an extremal BTZ black hole and study the asymptotic symmetry. In order to define it properly, we introduce a regularization and show that the asymptotic symmetry becomes the desirable non-chiral Virasoro symmetry with the same central charges for both left and right sectors, which are independent of the regularization parameter. We then investigate the non-chiral extension for general extremal black holes in the zero entropy limit. Since the same geometric structure as above emerges in this limit, we identify non-chiral Virasoro symmetry by a similar procedure. This observation supports the existence of a hidden non-chiral CFT_2 structure with the same central charges for both left and right sectors dual to the rotating black holes.

Seiberg-Witten Geometries Revisited

We provide a uniform solution to 4d N=2 gauge theory with a single gauge group G=A,D,E when the one-loop contribution to the beta function from any irreducible component R of the hypermultiplets is less than or equal to half of that of the adjoint representation. The solution is given by a non-compact Calabi-Yau geometry, whose defining equation is built from explicitly known polynomials W_G and X_R, associated respectively to the gauge group G and each irreducible component R. We provide many pieces of supporting evidence, for example by analyzing the system from the point of view of the 6d N=(2,0) theory compactified on a sphere.

M5-brane Solution in ABJM Theory and Three-algebra

We construct a new classical solution in the ABJM theory corresponding to M5-branes with a non-zero self-dual three form flux. This is an M-theory lift of the D4-brane solution expressed as a non-commutative plane in the three dimensional super Yang-Mills theory. We discuss that our solution is closely related with the three-algebra. We show that the corresponding configuration of the M5-brane satisfies the equations of motion in the single M5-brane action. We find the agreement between the tension of the M5-brane solution in the ABJM action and the one computed from the single M5-brane action.

New Seiberg Dualities from N=2 Dualities

We propose a number of new Seiberg dualities of N=1 quiver gauge theories. The new Seiberg dualities originate in new S-dualities of N=2 superconformal field theories recently proposed by Gaiotto. N=2 S-dual theories deformed by suitable mass terms flow to our N=1 Seiberg dual theories. We show that the number of exactly marginal operators is universal for these Seiberg dual theories and the 't Hooft anomaly matching holds for these theories. These provide strong evidence for the new Seiberg dualities. Furthermore, we study in detail the Klebanov-Witten type theory and its dual as a concrete example. We show that chiral operators and their non-linear relations match between these theories. These arguments also give non-trivial consistency checks for our proposal.

Solitons in Supersymmety Breaking Meta-Stable Vacua

In recently found supersymmetry-breaking meta-stable vacua of the supersymmetric QCD, we examine possible exsitence of solitons. Homotopy groups of the moduli space of the meta-stable vacua show that there is no nontrivial soliton for SU(N_c) gauge group. When U(1)_B symmetry present in the theory is gauged, we find non-BPS solitonic (vortex) strings whose existence and properties are predicted from brane configurations. We obtain explicit classical solutions which reproduce the predicitions. For SO(N_c) gauge group, we find there are solitonic strings for N = N_f-N_c+4 = 2, and Z_2 strings for the other N. The strings are meta-stable as they live in the meta-stable vacua.

Supertubes in Matrix model and DBI action

We show the equivalence between the supertube solutions with an arbitrary cross section in two different actions, the DBI action for the D2-brane and the matrix model action for the D0-branes. More precisely, the equivalence between the supertubes in the D2-brane picture and the D0-brane picture is shown in the boundary state formalism which is valid for all order in α'. This is an application of the method using the infinitely many D0-branes and anti-D0-branes which was used to show other equivalence relations between two seemingly different D-brane systems, including the D-brane realization of the ADHM construction of instanton. We also apply this method to the superfunnel type solutions successfully.

Brane Decay and Death of Open Strings

We show how open strings cease to propagate when unstable D-branes decay. The information on the propagation is encoded in BSFT two-point functions for arbitrary profiles of open string excitations. We evaluate them in tachyon condensation backgrounds corresponding to (i) static spatial tachyon kink (= lower dimensional BPS D-brane) and (ii) homogeneous rolling tachyon. For (i) the propagation is restricted to the directions along the tachyon kink, while for (ii) all the open string excitations cease to propagate at late time and are subject to a collapsed light cone characterized by Carrollian contraction of Lorentz group.

A Construction of Commutative D-branes from Lower Dimensional Non-BPS D-branes

We construct an exact soliton, which represents a BPS Dp-brane, in a boundary string field theory action of infinitely many non-BPS D(p-1)-branes. Furthermore, we show that this soliton can be regarded as an exact soliton in the full string field theory. The world-volume theory of the BPS Dp-brane constructed in this way becomes usual gauge theory on commutative R^{p+1}, instead of non-commutative plane. We also construct a D$p$-brane from non-BPS D(p-n)-branes by the ABS like configuration. We confirm that the Dp-brane has correct RR charges and the tension.

Brane-Antibrane Action from Boundary String Field Theory

In this paper we give the boundary string field theory description of brane-antibrane systems. From the world-sheet action of brane-antibrane systems we obtain the tachyon potential and discuss the tachyon condensation exactly. We also find the world-volume action including the gauge fields. Moreover we determine RR-couplings exactly for non-BPS branes and brane-antibranes. These couplings are written by superconnections and correspond to K^1(M) and K^0(M) for the non-BPS branes and brane-antibranes, respectively. We also show that Myers terms appear if we include the transverse scalars in the boundary sigma model action.

On Exact Noncommutative BPS Solitons

We construct new exact BPS solitons in various noncommutative gauge theories by the ``gauge'' transformation of known BPS solitons. This ``gauge'' transformation introduced by Harvey, Kraus and Larsen adds localized solitons to the known soliton. These solitons include, for example, the bound state of a noncommutative Abelian monopole and N fluxons at threshold. This corresponds, in superstring theories, to a D-string which attaches to a D3-brane and N D-strings which pierce the D3-brane, where all D-strings are parallel to each other.

On the Supersymmetry of Non-BPS D-brane

In this paper we extend the boundary string field theory action for a non-BPS D-brane to the one including the target space fermions and the nonlinear supersymmetry with 32 supercharges up to some order. This is based on the idea that the vacuum with a non-BPS D-brane belongs to the spontaneously broken phase of the supersymmetry. As a result, we find that the action is almost uniquely determined up to the field redefinition ambiguities.

S-Duality from OM-Theory

We study the compactification of OM-theory on tori and show a simple heuristic derivation of the $S$-duals of noncommutative open string theory in diverse dimensions from the OM-theoretical point of view. In particular, we identify the $S$-duality between noncommutative open string theory and noncommutative Yang-Mills theory in $(3+1)$ dimensions as the exchange of two circles of a torus on which OM-theory is compactified. Also, we briefly discuss $T$-duality between noncommutative open string theories.
