Single-shot characterization of vector beams by generalized measurements

Vector vortex beams, featuring independent spatial modes in orthogonal polarization components, offer an increase in information density for emerging applications in both classical and quantum communication technology. Recent advances in optical instrumentation have led to the ability of generating and manipulating such beams. Their tomography is generally accomplished by projection measurements to identify polarization as well as spatial modes. In this paper we demonstrate spatially resolved generalized measurements of arbitrary vector vortex beams. We perform positive operator valued measurements (POVMs) in an interferometric setup that characterizes the vector light mode in a single-shot. This offers superior data acquisition speed compared to conventional Stokes tomography techniques, with potential benefits for communication protocols as well as dynamic polarization microscopy of materials.

3D compact photonic circuits for realizing quantum state tomography of qudits in any finite dimension

In this work, we propose three-dimensional photonic circuit designs that guarantee a considerable reduction in the complexity of circuits for the purpose of performing quantum state tomography of N-dimensional path qudits. The POVM (Positive Operator-Valued Measure) chosen in this work ensures that, for odd dimensions, such process is minimal. Our proposal consists of organizing the waveguides that form the circuit as a square array formed by N vertical sectors composed of N waveguides each, arranged in the vertical direction. Based on the symmetry of the chosen POVM, the interferometer acting on the initial quantum system can be divided into a sequence of three different unitary operations. These operations act independently on each vertical sector, or layer, of the circuit, which simplifies their determination. We have thus obtained circuits such that the number of beam splitters obeys a polynomial function of degree 3 with the quantum system dimension, whereas in current proposals this quantity grows with a polynomial function of degree 4. Besides that, the optical depth is reduced from a quadratic to a linear function of the quantum system dimension in our scheme. These results confirm the remarkable reduction of the complexity of the photonic circuits in our proposal.

Experimental Test of the Quantum Violation of the Noncontextuality Inequalities for the n-Cycle Scenario

The inequalities that separate contextual from noncontextual correlations for the n-cycle scenario (consisting of n dichotomic observables Oj, with j = 0, ..., n-1 and such that Oj and Oj+1 are jointly measurable) have been recently identified [arXiv:1206.3212 (2012)]. Here we report the results of an experiment designed to reach the maximum quantum violation of these inequalities for any even number of observables ranging from 4 to 14. The four dimensional Hilbert space required for the test was spanned by two photonic qubits encoded in the transversal path of photon pairs, and the joint measurability of the observables is guaranteed by measuring correlations between observables from different modes. Our results show contextual correlations as predicted by quantum mechanics.
