Dispersive analysis of the pion transition form factor

We analyze the pion transition form factor using dispersion theory. We calculate the singly-virtual form factor in the time-like region based on data for the $e^+e^-\to 3π$ cross section, generalizing previous studies on $ω,ϕ\to3π$ decays and $γπ\toππ$ scattering, and verify our result by comparing to $e^+e^-\toπ^0γ$ data. We perform the analytic continuation to the space-like region, predicting the poorly-constrained space-like transition form factor below 1 GeV, and extract the slope of the form factor at vanishing momentum transfer $a_π=(30.7\pm0.6)\times 10^{-3}$. We derive the dispersive formalism necessary for the extension of these results to the doubly-virtual case, as required for the pion-pole contribution to hadronic light-by-light scattering in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon.

Dispersive analysis of omega --> 3pi and phi --> 3pi decays

We study the three-pion decays of the lightest isoscalar vector mesons, omega and phi, in a dispersive framework that allows for a consistent description of final-state interactions between all three pions. Our results are solely dependent on the phenomenological input for the pion-pion P-wave scattering phase shift. We predict the Dalitz plot distributions for both decays and compare our findings to recent measurements of the phi --> 3pi Dalitz plot by the KLOE and CMD-2 collaborations. Dalitz plot parameters for future precision measurements of omega --> 3pi are predicted. We also calculate the pi-pi P-wave inelasticity contribution from omega-pi intermediate states.

Dispersive analysis of omega/phi --> 3pi decays and the omega/phi --> pi0 gamma* transition form factors

We present a dispersive analysis of the three-pion decays of the lightest isoscalar vector mesons. The framework allows for a consistent implementation of final-state interactions among all three pions, with the results being solely dependent on the pion-pion P-wave scattering phase shift. We compare our results with the very precise KLOE measurement of phi --> 3pi. The omega/phi --> 3pi partial-wave amplitude serves as input to a dispersive analysis of the omega/phi --> pi0 gamma* transition form factor. We compare to data for omega --> pi0 mu+ mu- by the NA60 collaboration and motivate an experimental measurement of the OZI forbidden phi --> pi0 l+ l- decays in order to understand the strong deviations in the omega channel.

omega --> pi0 gamma* and phi --> pi0 gamma* Transition form factors in dispersion theory

We calculate the omega --> pi0 gamma* and phi --> pi0 gamma* electromagnetic transition form factors based on dispersion theory, relying solely on a previous dispersive analysis of the corresponding three-pion decays and the pion vector form factor. We compare our findings to recent measurements of the omega --> pi0 mu+ mu- decay spectrum by the NA60 collaboration, and strongly encourage experimental investigation of the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka-forbidden phi --> pi0 l+ l- decays in order to understand the strong deviations from vector-meson dominance found in these transition form factors.

On the role of final-state interactions in Dalitz plot studies

The study of Dalitz plots of heavy-meson decays to multi-hadron final states has received intensified interest by the possibility to gain access to precision investigations of CP violation. A thorough understanding of the hadronic final-state interactions is a prerequisite to achieve a highly sensitive, model-independent study of such Dalitz plots. We illustrate some of the theoretical tools, predominantly taken from dispersion theory, available for these and related purposes, and discuss the low-energy decays omega, phi --> 3pi in some more detail.

Rescattering effects in eta {\to} 3pi decays

The isospin-breaking decay eta {\to} 3pi is an ideal tool to extract information on light quark mass ratios from experiment. For a precise determination, however, a detailed description of the Dalitz plot distribution is necessary. In that respect, in particular the slope parameter alpha of the neutral decay channel causes some concern, since the one-loop prediction from chiral perturbation theory misses the experimental value substantially. We use the modified non-relativistic effective field-theory, a dedicated framework to analyze final-state interactions beyond one loop including isospin-breaking corrections, to extract charged and neutral Dalitz plot parameters. Matching to chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order, we find alpha = -0.025 +- 0.005, in marginal agreement with experimental findings. We derive a relation between charged and neutral decay parameters that points towards a significant tension between the most recent KLOE measurements of these observables.

Cusps in eta' --> eta pi pi decays

The discovery of the cusp effect in the decay K+ --> pi+ pi0 pi0 has spurred the search for other decay channels, where this phenomenon, which is generated by strong final-state interactions, should also occur. A very promising candidate is eta' --> eta pi0 pi0. The cusp effect offers an excellent opportunity to experimentally extract pi pi S-Wave scattering lengths. We adapt and generalize the non-relativistic effective field theory framework developed for K --> 3 pi decays to eta' --> eta pi pi. The cusp effect is predicted to have an effect of more than 8 % on the decay spectrum below the pi+ pi- threshold. We also show that with our current theoretical information about eta' --> eta pi pi decays, it is not possible to extract pi eta threshold parameters.
