A dispersive analysis of $η'\toπ^+π^-γ$ and $η'\to \ell^+\ell^-γ$

We present a dispersive representation of the $η'$ transition form factor that allows one to account, in a consistent way, for the effects of $ρ$-$ω$ mixing in both the isoscalar and the isovector contributions. Using this formalism, we analyze recent data on $η'\to π^+π^-γ$ to constrain the isovector part of the form factor, individually and in combination with data for the pion vector form factor. As a first application, we use our results, in combination with the most recent input for the isoscalar part of the form factor, to predict the corresponding spectrum of $η'\to\ell^+\ell^-γ$, in particular we find the slope parameter $b_{η'}=1.431(23)\, \text{GeV}^{-2}$. With forthcoming data on the latter process, our results establish the necessary framework to improve the evaluation of the $η'$-pole contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon using experimental input from both $η'$ decay channels.

Chiral extrapolation of hadronic vacuum polarization

We study the pion-mass dependence of the two-pion channel in the hadronic-vacuum-polarization (HVP) contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_μ^\text{HVP}$, by using an Omnès representation for the pion vector form factor with the phase shift derived from the inverse-amplitude method (IAM). Our results constrain the dominant isospin-$1$ part of the isospin-symmetric light-quark contribution, and should thus allow one to better control the chiral extrapolation of $a_μ^\text{HVP}$, required for lattice-QCD calculations performed at larger-than-physical pion masses. In particular, the comparison of the one- and two-loop IAM allows us to estimate the associated systematic uncertainties and show that these are under good control.

Improved Standard-Model prediction for $π^0\to e^+e^-$

We present an improved Standard-Model (SM) prediction for the dilepton decay of the neutral pion. The loop amplitude is determined by the pion transition form factor for $π^0\toγ^*γ^*$, for which we employ a dispersive representation that incorporates both space-like and time-like data as well as short-distance constraints. The resulting SM branching fraction, $\text{BR}[π^0\to e^+e^-]=6.25(3)\times 10^{-8}$ , sharpens constraints on physics beyond the SM, including pseudoscalar and axial-vector mediators.

Kaon electromagnetic form factors in dispersion theory

The electromagnetic form factors of charged and neutral kaons are strongly constrained by their low-energy singularities, in the isovector part from two-pion intermediate states and in the isoscalar contribution in terms of $ω$ and $ϕ$ residues. The former can be predicted using the respective $ππ\to\bar K K$ partial-wave amplitude and the pion electromagnetic form factor, while the latter parameters need to be determined from electromagnetic reactions involving kaons. We present a global analysis of time- and spacelike data that implements all of these constraints. The results enable manifold applications: kaon charge radii, elastic contributions to the kaon electromagnetic self energies and corrections to Dashen's theorem, kaon boxes in hadronic light-by-light (HLbL) scattering, and the $ϕ$ region in hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP). Our main results are: $\langle r^2\rangle_\text{c}=0.359(3)\,\text{fm}^2$, $\langle r^2\rangle_\text{n}=-0.060(4)\,\text{fm}^2$ for the charged and neutral radii, $ε=0.63(40)$ for the elastic contribution to the violation of Dashen's theorem, $a_μ^{K\text{-box}}=-0.48(1)\times 10^{-11}$ for the charged kaon box in HLbL scattering, and $a_μ^\text{HVP}[K^+K^-, \leq 1.05\,\text{GeV}]=184.5(2.0)\times 10^{-11}$, $a_μ^\text{HVP}[K_SK_L, \leq 1.05\,\text{GeV}]=118.3(1.5)\times 10^{-11}$ for the HVP integrals around the $ϕ$ resonance. The global fit to $\bar K K$ gives $\bar M_ϕ=1019.479(5)\,\text{MeV}$, $\bar Γ_ϕ=4.207(8)\,\text{MeV}$ for the $ϕ$ resonance parameters including vacuum-polarization effects.

Precision tests of fundamental physics with $η$ and $η^\prime$ mesons

Decays of the neutral and long-lived $η$ and $η'$ mesons provide a unique, flavor-conserving laboratory to test low-energy Quantum Chromodynamics and search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. They have drawn world-wide attention in recent years and have inspired broad experimental programs in different high-intensity-frontier centers. New experimental data will offer critical inputs to precisely determine the light quark mass ratios, $η$-$η'$ mixing parameters, and hadronic contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. At the same time, it will provide a sensitive probe to test potential new physics. This includes searches for hidden photons, light Higgs scalars, and axion-like particles that are complementary to worldwide efforts to detect new light particles below the GeV mass scale, as well as tests of discrete symmetry violation. In this review, we give an update on theoretical developments, discuss the experimental opportunities, and identify future research needed in this field.

Dispersive analysis of the Primakoff reaction $γK \to K π$

We provide a dispersion-theoretical representation of the reaction amplitudes $γK\to K π$ in all charge channels, based on modern pion-kaon $P$-wave phase shift input. Crossed-channel singularities are fixed from phenomenology as far as possible. We demonstrate how the subtraction constants can be matched to a low-energy theorem and radiative couplings of the $K^*(892)$ resonances, thereby providing a model-independent framework for future analyses of high-precision kaon Primakoff data.

Extraction of $ND$ scattering lengths from the $Λ_b\rightarrowπ^-pD^0$ decay and properties of the $Σ_c(2800)^+$

The isovector and isoscalar $ND$ $s$-wave scattering lengths are extracted by fitting to the LHCb data of the $pD^0$ invariant-mass distribution in the decay $Λ_b\rightarrowπ^-pD^0$, making use of the cusp effect at the $nD^+$ threshold. The analysis is based on a coupled-channel nonrelativistic effective field theory. We find that the real part of the isovector $ND$ scattering length is unnaturally large due to the existence of a near-threshold state with a mass around 2.8 GeV. The state is consistent with the $Σ_c(2800)^+$ resonance observed at Belle. Our results suggest that it couples strongly to the $ND$ channel in an $s$-wave, and that its quantum numbers are $J^P=1/2^-$. The strong cusp behavior at the $nD^+$ threshold can be verified using updated LHCb data.

Nucleon matrix elements of the antisymmetric quark tensor

If physics beyond the Standard Model enters well above the electroweak scale, its low-energy effects are described by Standard Model Effective Field Theory. Already at dimension six many operators involve the antisymmetric quark tensor $\bar q σ^{μν} q$, whose matrix elements are difficult to constrain from experiment, Ward identities, or low-energy theorems, in contrast to the corresponding vector and axial-vector or even scalar and pseudoscalar currents. However, with normalizations determined from lattice QCD, analyticity and unitarity often allow one to predict the momentum dependence in a large kinematic range. Starting from recent results in the meson sector, we extend this method to the nucleon case and, in combination with pole dominance, provide a comprehensive assessment of the current status of the nucleon form factors of the quark tensor.

Effect of $Z_b$ states on $Υ(3S)\toΥ(1S)ππ$ decays

Within the framework of dispersion theory, we analyze the dipion transitions between the lightest $Υ$ states, $Υ(nS) \rightarrow Υ(mS) ππ$ with $m < n \leq 3$. In particular, we consider the possible effects of two intermediate bottomoniumlike exotic states $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$. The $ππ$ rescattering effects are taken into account in a model-independent way using dispersion theory. We confirm that matching the dispersive representation to the leading chiral amplitude alone cannot reproduce the peculiar two-peak $ππ$ mass spectrum of the decay $Υ(3S) \rightarrow Υ(1S) ππ$. The existence of the bottomoniumlike $Z_b$ states can naturally explain this anomaly. We also point out the necessity of a proper extraction of the coupling strengths for the $Z_b$ states to $Υ(nS)π$, which is only possible if a Flatté-like parametrization is used in the data analysis for the $Z_b$ states.

Remarks on the pion-nucleon sigma-term

The pion-nucleon $σ$-term can be stringently constrained by the combination of analyticity, unitarity, and crossing symmetry with phenomenological information on the pion-nucleon scattering lengths. Recently, lattice calculations at the physical point have been reported that find lower values by about $3σ$ with respect to the phenomenological determination. We point out that a lattice measurement of the pion-nucleon scattering lengths could help resolve the situation by testing the values extracted from spectroscopy measurements in pionic atoms.

Roy-Steiner-equation analysis of pion-nucleon scattering

We review the structure of Roy-Steiner equations for pion-nucleon scattering, the solution for the partial waves of the t-channel process $ππ\to \bar N N$, as well as the high-accuracy extraction of the pion-nucleon S-wave scattering lengths from data on pionic hydrogen and deuterium. We then proceed to construct solutions for the lowest partial waves of the s-channel process $πN\to πN$ and demonstrate that accurate solutions can be found if the scattering lengths are imposed as constraints. Detailed error estimates of all input quantities in the solution procedure are performed and explicit parameterizations for the resulting low-energy phase shifts as well as results for subthreshold parameters and higher threshold parameters are presented. Furthermore, we discuss the extraction of the pion-nucleon $σ$-term via the Cheng-Dashen low-energy theorem, including the role of isospin-breaking corrections, to obtain a precision determination consistent with all constraints from analyticity, unitarity, crossing symmetry, and pionic-atom data. We perform the matching to chiral perturbation theory in the subthreshold region and detail the consequences for the chiral convergence of the threshold parameters and the nucleon mass.

Analysis of the J/psi --> pi^0 gamma^* transition form factor

In view of the first measurement of the branching fraction for J/psi --> pi^0 e^+ e^- by the BESIII collaboration, we analyze what can be learnt on the corresponding transition form factor using dispersion theory. We show that light-quark degrees of freedom dominate the spectral function, in particular two-pion intermediate states. Estimating the effects of multi-pion states as well as charmonium, we arrive at a prediction for the complete form factor that should be scrutinized experimentally in the future.

Anomalous decay and scattering processes of the eta meson

We amend a recent dispersive analysis of the anomalous $η$ decay process $η\toπ^+π^-γ$ by the effects of the $a_2$ tensor meson, the lowest-lying resonance that can contribute in the $πη$ system. While the net effects on the measured decay spectrum are small, they may be more pronounced for the analogous $η'$ decay. There are nonnegligible consequences for the $η$ transition form factor, which is an important quantity for the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon's anomalous magnetic moment. We predict total and differential cross sections, as well as a marked forward-backward asymmetry, for the crossed process $γπ^-\toπ^-η$ that could be measured in Primakoff reactions in the future.

Dispersion-theoretical analysis of the D^+ --> K^- pi^+ pi^+ Dalitz plot

We study the Dalitz plot of the Cabibbo-favored charmed-meson decay $D^+\to K^-π^+π^+$ using dispersion theory. The formalism respects all constraints from analyticity and unitarity, and consistently describes final-state interactions between all three decay products. We employ pion-pion and pion-kaon phase shifts as input, and fit the pertinent subtraction constants to Dalitz plot data by the CLEO and FOCUS collaborations. Phase motions of resonant as well as nonresonant amplitudes are discussed, which should provide crucial input for future studies of CP violation in similar three-body charm decays.

High-precision determination of the pion-nucleon $σ$-term from Roy-Steiner equations

We present a determination of the pion-nucleon ($πN$) $σ$-term $σ_{πN}$ based on the Cheng-Dashen low-energy theorem (LET), taking advantage of the recent high-precision data from pionic atoms to pin down the $πN$ scattering lengths as well as of constraints from analyticity, unitarity, and crossing symmetry in the form of Roy-Steiner equations to perform the extrapolation to the Cheng-Dashen point in a reliable manner. With isospin-violating corrections included both in the scattering lengths and the LET, we obtain $σ_{πN}=(59.1\pm 1.9\pm 3.0)$ MeV $=(59.1\pm 3.5)$ MeV, where the first error refers to uncertainties in the $πN$ amplitude and the second to the LET. Consequences for the scalar nucleon couplings relevant for the direct detection of dark matter are discussed.

Matching pion-nucleon Roy-Steiner equations to chiral perturbation theory

We match the results for the subthreshold parameters of pion-nucleon scattering obtained from a solution of Roy-Steiner equations to chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order, to extract the pertinent low-energy constants including a comprehensive analysis of systematic uncertainties and correlations. We study the convergence of the chiral series by investigating the chiral expansion of threshold parameters up to the same order and discuss the role of the Δ(1232) resonance in this context. Results for the low-energy constants are also presented in the counting scheme usually applied in chiral nuclear effective field theory, where they serve as crucial input to determine the long-range part of the nucleon-nucleon potential as well as three-nucleon forces.

B_l4 decays and the extraction of |V_ub|

The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V_ub| is not well determined yet. It can be extracted from both inclusive or exclusive decays, like B --> pi (rho) l nu-bar_l. However, the exclusive determination from B --> rho l nu-bar_l, in particular, suffers from a large model dependence. In this paper, we propose to extract |V_ub| from the four-body semileptonic decay B --> pi pi l nu-bar_l, where the form factors for the pion-pion system are treated in dispersion theory. This is a model-independent approach that takes into account the pi-pi rescattering effects, as well as the effect of the rho meson. We demonstrate that both finite-width effects of the rho meson as well as scalar pi-pi contributions can be considered completely in this way.

Dispersive analysis of the pion transition form factor

We analyze the pion transition form factor using dispersion theory. We calculate the singly-virtual form factor in the time-like region based on data for the $e^+e^-\to 3π$ cross section, generalizing previous studies on $ω,ϕ\to3π$ decays and $γπ\toππ$ scattering, and verify our result by comparing to $e^+e^-\toπ^0γ$ data. We perform the analytic continuation to the space-like region, predicting the poorly-constrained space-like transition form factor below 1 GeV, and extract the slope of the form factor at vanishing momentum transfer $a_π=(30.7\pm0.6)\times 10^{-3}$. We derive the dispersive formalism necessary for the extension of these results to the doubly-virtual case, as required for the pion-pole contribution to hadronic light-by-light scattering in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon.

Towards a data-driven analysis of hadronic light-by-light scattering

The hadronic light-by-light contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon was recently analyzed in the framework of dispersion theory, providing a systematic formalism where all input quantities are expressed in terms of on-shell form factors and scattering amplitudes that are in principle accessible in experiment. We briefly review the main ideas behind this framework and discuss the various experimental ingredients needed for the evaluation of one- and two-pion intermediate states. In particular, we identify processes that in the absence of data for doubly-virtual pion-photon interactions can help constrain parameters in the dispersive reconstruction of the relevant input quantities, the pion transition form factor and the helicity partial waves for $γ^*γ^*\toππ$.

Anomalous decays of eta' and eta into four pions

We calculate the branching ratios of the yet unmeasured eta' decays into four pions, based on a combination of chiral perturbation theory and vector-meson dominance. The decays eta' --> 2(pi+ pi-) and eta' --> pi+ pi- 2pi0 are P-wave dominated and can largely be thought to proceed via two rho resonances; we predict branching fractions of (1.0+-0.3)*10^-4 and (2.4+-0.7)*10^-4, respectively, not much lower than the current experimental upper limits. The decays eta' --> 4pi0 and eta --> 4pi0, in contrast, are D-wave driven as long as conservation of CP symmetry is assumed, and are significantly further suppressed; any experimental evidence for the decay eta --> 4pi0 could almost certainly be interpreted as a signal of CP violation. We also calculate the CP-violating amplitudes for eta' --> 4pi0 and eta --> 4pi0 induced by the QCD theta-term.

Dispersive analysis of omega --> 3pi and phi --> 3pi decays

We study the three-pion decays of the lightest isoscalar vector mesons, omega and phi, in a dispersive framework that allows for a consistent description of final-state interactions between all three pions. Our results are solely dependent on the phenomenological input for the pion-pion P-wave scattering phase shift. We predict the Dalitz plot distributions for both decays and compare our findings to recent measurements of the phi --> 3pi Dalitz plot by the KLOE and CMD-2 collaborations. Dalitz plot parameters for future precision measurements of omega --> 3pi are predicted. We also calculate the pi-pi P-wave inelasticity contribution from omega-pi intermediate states.

Dispersive analysis of omega/phi --> 3pi decays and the omega/phi --> pi0 gamma* transition form factors

We present a dispersive analysis of the three-pion decays of the lightest isoscalar vector mesons. The framework allows for a consistent implementation of final-state interactions among all three pions, with the results being solely dependent on the pion-pion P-wave scattering phase shift. We compare our results with the very precise KLOE measurement of phi --> 3pi. The omega/phi --> 3pi partial-wave amplitude serves as input to a dispersive analysis of the omega/phi --> pi0 gamma* transition form factor. We compare to data for omega --> pi0 mu+ mu- by the NA60 collaboration and motivate an experimental measurement of the OZI forbidden phi --> pi0 l+ l- decays in order to understand the strong deviations in the omega channel.

Extracting the chiral anomaly from gamma pi --> pi pi

We derive dispersive representations for the anomalous process gamma pi --> pi pi with the pi pi P-wave phase shift as input. We investigate how in this framework the chiral anomaly can be extracted from a cross-section measurement using all data up to 1 GeV, and discuss the importance of a precise representation of the gamma pi --> pi pi amplitude for the hadronic light-by-light contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon.

Improved dispersive analysis of the scalar form factor of the nucleon

We present a coupled system of integral equations for the pi pi --> Nbar N and Kbar K --> Nbar N S-waves derived from Roy-Steiner equations for pion-nucleon scattering. We discuss the solution of the corresponding two-channel Muskhelishvili-Omnes problem and apply the results to a dispersive analysis of the scalar form factor of the nucleon fully including Kbar K intermediate states. In particular, we determine the corrections Delta_sigma and Delta_D, which are needed for the extraction of the pion-nucleon sigma term from pi N scattering, and show that the difference Delta_D - Delta_sigma=(-1.8 +/- 0.2) MeV is insensitive to the input pi N parameters.

Isospin breaking in pion-deuteron scattering and the pion-nucleon scattering lengths

In recent years, high-accuracy data for pionic hydrogen and deuterium have become the primary source of information on the pion-nucleon scattering lengths. Matching the experimental precision requires, in particular, the study of isospin-breaking corrections both in pion-nucleon and pion-deuteron scattering. We review the mechanisms that lead to the cancellation of potentially enhanced virtual-photon corrections in the pion-deuteron system, and discuss the subtleties regarding the definition of the pion-nucleon scattering lengths in the presence of electromagnetic interactions by comparing to nucleon-nucleon scattering. Based on the pi^{+/-} p channels we find for the virtual-photon-subtracted scattering lengths in the isospin basis a^{1/2}=(170.5 +/- 2.0) x 10^{-3} mpi^{-1} and a^{3/2}=(-86.5 +/- 1.8) x 10^{-3} mpi^{-1}.

omega --> pi0 gamma* and phi --> pi0 gamma* Transition form factors in dispersion theory

We calculate the omega --> pi0 gamma* and phi --> pi0 gamma* electromagnetic transition form factors based on dispersion theory, relying solely on a previous dispersive analysis of the corresponding three-pion decays and the pion vector form factor. We compare our findings to recent measurements of the omega --> pi0 mu+ mu- decay spectrum by the NA60 collaboration, and strongly encourage experimental investigation of the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka-forbidden phi --> pi0 l+ l- decays in order to understand the strong deviations from vector-meson dominance found in these transition form factors.

Roy-Steiner equations for pi N scattering

Starting from hyperbolic dispersion relations for the invariant amplitudes of pion-nucleon scattering together with crossing symmetry and unitarity, one can derive a closed system of integral equations for the partial waves of both the s-channel (pi N --> pi N) and the t-channel (pi pi --> Nbar N) reaction, called Roy-Steiner equations. After giving a brief overview of the Roy-Steiner system for pi N scattering, we demonstrate that the solution of the t-channel subsystem, which represents the first step in solving the full system, can be achieved by means of Muskhelishvili-Omnès techniques. In particular, we present results for the P-waves featuring in the dispersive analysis of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon.

On the role of final-state interactions in Dalitz plot studies

The study of Dalitz plots of heavy-meson decays to multi-hadron final states has received intensified interest by the possibility to gain access to precision investigations of CP violation. A thorough understanding of the hadronic final-state interactions is a prerequisite to achieve a highly sensitive, model-independent study of such Dalitz plots. We illustrate some of the theoretical tools, predominantly taken from dispersion theory, available for these and related purposes, and discuss the low-energy decays omega, phi --> 3pi in some more detail.

Rescattering effects in eta {\to} 3pi decays

The isospin-breaking decay eta {\to} 3pi is an ideal tool to extract information on light quark mass ratios from experiment. For a precise determination, however, a detailed description of the Dalitz plot distribution is necessary. In that respect, in particular the slope parameter alpha of the neutral decay channel causes some concern, since the one-loop prediction from chiral perturbation theory misses the experimental value substantially. We use the modified non-relativistic effective field-theory, a dedicated framework to analyze final-state interactions beyond one loop including isospin-breaking corrections, to extract charged and neutral Dalitz plot parameters. Matching to chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order, we find alpha = -0.025 +- 0.005, in marginal agreement with experimental findings. We derive a relation between charged and neutral decay parameters that points towards a significant tension between the most recent KLOE measurements of these observables.

The role of final-state interactions in Dalitz plot studies

Dalitz plot studies for multi-hadron decays of heavy mesons are expected to become very important tools for precision investigations of CP violation. A thorough understanding of the hadronic final-state interactions is a prerequisite to achieve a highly sensitive, model-independent study of CP-violating phases in such processes. We illustrate the theoretical tools available, as well as still to be developed, from low-to-medium-energy hadron physics for this purpose, and the goals of the informal "Les Nabis" network studying these and related problems.

Radiative corrections in K --> pi l+ l- decays

We calculate radiative corrections to the flavor-changing neutral current process K --> pi l+ l-, both for charged and neutral kaon decays. While the soft-photon approximation is shown to work well for the muon channels, we discuss the necessity of further phase space cuts with electrons in the final state. It is also shown how to transfer our results to other decays such as eta --> gamma l+ l- or omega --> pi0 l+ l-.

Cusp effects in meson decays

The pion mass difference generates a pronounced cusp in the pi0 pi0 invariant mass distribution of K+ --> pi0 pi0 pi+ decays. As originally pointed out by Cabibbo, an accurate measurement of the cusp may allow one to pin down the S-wave pion-pion scattering lengths to high precision. We present the non-relativistic effective field theory framework that permits to determine the structure of this cusp in a straightforward manner, including the effects of radiative corrections. Applications of the same formalism to other decay channels, in particular eta and eta' decays, are also discussed.

Cusps in eta' --> eta pi pi decays

The discovery of the cusp effect in the decay K+ --> pi+ pi0 pi0 has spurred the search for other decay channels, where this phenomenon, which is generated by strong final-state interactions, should also occur. A very promising candidate is eta' --> eta pi0 pi0. The cusp effect offers an excellent opportunity to experimentally extract pi pi S-Wave scattering lengths. We adapt and generalize the non-relativistic effective field theory framework developed for K --> 3 pi decays to eta' --> eta pi pi. The cusp effect is predicted to have an effect of more than 8 % on the decay spectrum below the pi+ pi- threshold. We also show that with our current theoretical information about eta' --> eta pi pi decays, it is not possible to extract pi eta threshold parameters.

Despite the appearance of the Coulomb pole in eta --> pi+ pi- pi0 and cusps in eta --> 3 pi0, the overall corrections remain small.

Isospin violation in low-energy pion-nucleon scattering revisited

We calculate isospin breaking in pion-nucleon scattering in the threshold region in the framework of covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. All effects due to quark mass differences as well as real and virtual photons are consistently included. As an application, we discuss the energy dependence of the triangle relation that connects elastic scattering on the proton pi+- p --> pi+- p with the charge exchange reaction pi- p --> pi0 n.

Isospin-breaking corrections to the pion-nucleon scattering lengths

We analyze isospin breaking through quark mass differences and virtual photons in the pion-nucleon scattering lengths in all physical channels in the framework of covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. The so-called triangle relation is found to be violated by about 1.5 %. We encounter a substantial isospin-breaking correction to neutral-pion-nucleon scattering beyond Weinberg's prediction due to a cusp effect. Finally, the application to hadronic atoms is briefly discussed.
