Fano 3-Folds, Reflexive Polytopes and Brane Brick Models

Reflexive polytopes in n dimensions have attracted much attention both in mathematics and theoretical physics due to their connection to Fano n-folds and mirror symmetry. This work focuses on the 18 regular reflexive polytopes corresponding to smooth Fano 3-folds. For the first time, we show that all 18 regular reflexive polytopes have corresponding 2d (0,2) gauge theories realized by brane brick models. These 2d gauge theories can be considered as the worldvolume theories of D1-branes probing the toric Calabi-Yau 4-singularities whose toric diagrams are given by the associated regular reflexive polytopes. The generators of the mesonic moduli space of the brane brick models are shown to form a lattice of generators due to the charges under the rank 3 mesonic flavor symmetry. It is shown that the lattice of generators is the exact polar dual reflexive polytope to the corresponding toric diagram of the brane brick model. This duality not only highlights the close relationship between the geometry and 2d gauge theory, but also opens up pathways towards new discoveries in relation to reflexive polytopes and brane brick models.

Quivers, Lattice Gauge Theories and Fractons

We argue that quiver gauge theories with $SU(N)$ gauge groups give rise to lattice gauge theories with matter possessing fractonic properties, where the lattice is the quiver itself. This idea extends a recent proposal by Razamat. This class of theories exhibit a $\mathbb{Z}_N$ 1-form global symmetry that can be used to classify their phases. The order parameter of this transition is the expectation value of Wilson loops, which correspond to mesonic operators in the underlying quiver gauge theory. We discuss how this perspective naturally fits with the deconstruction of a higher dimensional theory.

On the Classification of Duality Webs for Graded Quivers

We study the $m$-graded quiver theories associated to CY $(m+2)$-folds and their order $(m+1)$ dualities. We investigate how monodromies give rise to mutation invariants, which in turn can be formulated as Diophantine equations characterizing the space of dual theories associated to a given geometry. We discuss these ideas in general and illustrate them in the case of orbifold theories. Interestingly, we observe that even in this simple context the corresponding Diophantine equations may admit an infinite number of seeds for $m\geq 2$, which translates into an infinite number of disconnected duality webs. Finally, we comment on the possible generalization of duality cascades beyond $m=1$.

"Lagrangian Disks" in M-theory

While the study of bordered (pseudo-)holomorphic curves with boundary on Lagrangian submanifolds has a long history, a similar problem that involves (special) Lagrangian submanifolds with boundary on complex surfaces appears to be largely overlooked in both physics and math literature. We relate this problem to geometry of coassociative submanifolds in $G_2$ holonomy spaces and to $Spin(7)$ metrics on 8-manifolds with $T^2$ fibrations. As an application to physics, we propose a large class of brane models in type IIA string theory that generalize brane brick models on the one hand and 2d theories $T[M_4]$ on the other.

Brane Brick Models and 2d (0,2) Triality

We provide a brane realization of 2d (0,2) Gadde-Gukov-Putrov triality in terms of brane brick models. These are Type IIA brane configurations that are T-dual to D1-branes over singular toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. Triality translates into a local transformation of brane brick models, whose simplest representative is a cube move. We present explicit examples and construct their triality networks. We also argue that the classical mesonic moduli space of brane brick model theories, which corresponds to the probed Calabi-Yau 4-fold, is invariant under triality. Finally, we discuss triality in terms of phase boundaries, which play a central role in connecting Calabi-Yau 4-folds to brane brick models.

Brane Brick Models, Toric Calabi-Yau 4-Folds and 2d (0,2) Quivers

We introduce brane brick models, a novel type of Type IIA brane configurations consisting of D4-branes ending on an NS5-brane. Brane brick models are T-dual to D1-branes over singular toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. They fully encode the infinite class of 2d (generically) N=(0,2) gauge theories on the worldvolume of the D1-branes and streamline their connection to the probed geometries. For this purpose, we also introduce new combinatorial procedures for deriving the Calabi-Yau associated to a given gauge theory and vice versa.

Exact quantization conditions for cluster integrable systems

We propose exact quantization conditions for the quantum integrable systems of Goncharov and Kenyon, based on the enumerative geometry of the corresponding toric Calabi-Yau manifolds. Our conjecture builds upon recent results on the quantization of mirror curves, and generalizes a previous proposal for the quantization of the relativistic Toda lattice. We present explicit tests of our conjecture for the integrable systems associated to the resolved C^3/Z_5 and C^3/Z_6 orbifolds.

Non-Planar On-Shell Diagrams

We initiate a systematic study of non-planar on-shell diagrams in N=4 SYM and develop powerful technology for doing so. We introduce canonical variables generalizing face variables, which make the dlog form of the on-shell form explicit. We make significant progress towards a general classification of arbitrary on-shell diagrams by means of two classes of combinatorial objects: generalized matching and matroid polytopes. We propose a boundary measurement that connects general on-shell diagrams to the Grassmannian. Our proposal exhibits two important and non-trivial properties: positivity in the planar case and it matches the combinatorial description of the diagrams in terms of generalized matroid polytopes. Interestingly, non-planar diagrams exhibit novel phenomena, such as the emergence of constraints on Plucker coordinates beyond Plucker relations when deleting edges, which are neatly captured by the generalized matching and matroid polytopes. This behavior is tied to the existence of a new type of poles in the on-shell form at which combinations of Plucker coordinates vanish. Finally, we introduce a prescription, applicable beyond the MHV case, for writing the on-shell form as a function of minors directly from the graph.

Stratifying On-Shell Cluster Varieties: the Geometry of Non-Planar On-Shell Diagrams

The correspondence between on-shell diagrams in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and cluster varieties in the Grassmannian remains largely unexplored beyond the planar limit. In this article, we describe a systematic program to survey such 'on-shell varieties', and use this to provide a complete classification in the case of $G(3,6)$. In particular, we find exactly 24 top-dimensional varieties and 10 co-dimension one varieties in $G(3,6)$---up to parity and relabeling of the external legs. We use this case to illustrate some of the novelties found for non-planar varieties relative to the case of positroids, and describe some of the features that we expect to hold more generally.

2d (0,2) Quiver Gauge Theories and D-Branes

We initiate a systematic study of 2d (0,2) quiver gauge theories on the worldvolume of D1-branes probing singular toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. We present an algorithm for efficiently calculating the classical mesonic moduli spaces of these theories, which correspond to the probed geometries. We also introduce a systematic procedure for constructing the gauge theories for arbitrary toric singularities by means of partial resolution, which translates to higgsing in the field theory. Finally, we introduce Brane Brick Models, a novel class of brane configurations that consist of D4-branes suspended from an NS5-brane wrapping a holomorphic surface, tessellating a 3-torus. Brane Brick Models are the 2d analogues of Brane Tilings and allow a direct connection between geometry and gauge theory.

Axion Monodromy Inflation on Warped Throats

Recent models of axion monodromy inflation in string theory link the inflationary potential and the moduli stabilization potential. Realistic inflationary models require mechanisms to moderately suppress the inflaton mass with respect to the moduli stabilization scale. In this paper we explore the realization of this idea using warped throats, whose redshifted infrared region supports the inflaton mode. The inflaton potential and its monodromy arise from couplings to the fluxes supporting the throat. We provide explicit realizations of such throats in type IIB with NSNS and RR 3-form field strength fluxes, and in type IIA with RR 2-form fluxes. Once embedded in a global CY, these systems would provide a mechanism to realize chaotic inflation at scales parametrically suppressed with respect to bulk physics. The construction of the throats is systematically carried out using geometric transitions in systems of D-branes at singularities, whose properties and dynamics are efficiently encoded using dimer diagrams. The holographic dual of the axion monodromy is a quasi-periodic chain of Seiberg dualities.

Charting Class ${\cal S}_k$ Territory

We extend the investigation of the recently introduced class ${\cal S}_k$ of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs, by considering a large family of quiver gauge theories within it, which we denote $\mathcal{S}^1_k$. These theories admit a realization in terms of $\mathbb{Z}_k$ orbifolds of Type IIA configurations of D4-branes stretched among relatively rotated sets of NS-branes. This fact permits a systematic investigation of the full family, which exhibits new features such as non-trivial anomalous dimensions differing from free field values and novel ways of gluing theories. We relate these ingredients to properties of compactification of the 6d (1,0) superconformal ${\cal T}_N^k$ theories on spheres with different kinds of punctures. We describe the structure of dualities in this class of theories upon exchange of punctures, including transformations that correspond to Seiberg dualities, and exploit the computation of the superconformal index to check the invariance of the theories under them.

D-brane Instantons as Gauge Instantons in Orientifolds of Chiral Quiver Theories

Systems of D3-branes at orientifold singularities can receive non-perturbative D-brane instanton corrections, inducing field theory operators in the 4d effective theory. In certain non-chiral examples, these systems have been realized as the infrared endpoint of a Seiberg duality cascade, in which the D-brane instanton effects arise from strong gauge theory dynamics. We present the first UV duality cascade completion of chiral D3-brane theories, in which the D-brane instantons arise from gauge theory dynamics. Chiral examples are interesting because the instanton fermion zero mode sector is topologically protected, and therefore lead to more robust setups. As an application of our results, we provide a UV completion of certain D-brane orientifold systems recently claimed to produce conformal field theories with conformal invariance broken only by D-brane instantons.

Anatomy of the Amplituhedron

We initiate a comprehensive investigation of the geometry of the amplituhedron, a recently found geometric object whose volume calculates the integrand of scattering amplitudes in planar N=4 SYM theory. We do so by introducing and studying its stratification, focusing on four-point amplitudes. The new stratification exhibits interesting combinatorial properties and positivity is neatly captured by permutations. As explicit examples, we find all boundaries for the two and three loop amplitudes and related geometries. We recover the stratifications of some of these geometries from the singularities of the corresponding integrands, providing a non-trivial test of the amplituhedron/scattering amplitude correspondence. We finally introduce a deformation of the stratification with remarkably simple topological properties.

Bipartite Field Theories from D-Branes

We develop tools for determining the gauge theory resulting from a configuration of Type IIB D3-branes probing a non-compact, toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold, in the presence of additional flavor D7-branes with general embeddings. Two main ingredients of our approach are dimer models and mirror symmetry. D7-branes with general embeddings are obtained by recombination of elementary D7-brane constituents. These tools are then used to engineer a large set of Bipartite Field Theories, a class of 4d, N=1 quantum field theories defined by bipartite graphs on bordered Riemann surfaces. Several explicit examples, including infinite families of models, associated to both planar and non-planar graphs are presented.

Cluster Transformations from Bipartite Field Theories

Bipartite field theories (BFTs) are a new class of 4d N=1 quantum field theories defined by bipartite graphs on bordered Riemann surfaces. In this paper we derive, purely in terms of the gauge theory, the cluster transformations of face weights under square moves in the graph. In this context, we obtain them by connecting regular parametrizations of the master space of the associated BFTs. For BFTs on a disk, these transformations follow from the properties of coordinates in the Grassmannian. This represents a new addition to the list of combinatorial objects for the Grassmannian, such as matching and matroid polytopes, that have been shown to emerge from BFT dynamics.

The Geometry of On-Shell Diagrams

The fundamental role of on-shell diagrams in quantum field theory has been recently recognized. On-shell diagrams, or equivalently bipartite graphs, provide a natural bridge connecting gauge theory to powerful mathematical structures such as the Grassmannian. We perform a detailed investigation of the combinatorial and geometric objects associated to these graphs. We mainly focus on their relation to polytopes and toric geometry, the Grassmannian and its stratification. Our work extends the current understanding of these connections along several important fronts, most notably eliminating restrictions imposed by planarity, positivity, reducibility and edge removability. We illustrate our ideas with several explicit examples and introduce concrete methods that considerably simplify computations. We consider it highly likely that the structures unveiled in this article will arise in the on-shell study of scattering amplitudes beyond the planar limit. Our results can be conversely regarded as an expansion in the understanding of the Grassmannian in terms of bipartite graphs.

Bipartite Field Theories: from D-Brane Probes to Scattering Amplitudes

We introduce and initiate the investigation of a general class of 4d, N=1 quiver gauge theories whose Lagrangian is defined by a bipartite graph on a Riemann surface, with or without boundaries. We refer to such class of theories as Bipartite Field Theories (BFTs). BFTs underlie a wide spectrum of interesting physical systems, including: D3-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds, their mirror configurations of D6-branes, cluster integrable systems in (0+1) dimensions and leading singularities in scattering amplitudes for N=4 SYM. While our discussion is fully general, we focus on models that are relevant for scattering amplitudes. We investigate the BFT perspective on graph modifications, the emergence of Calabi-Yau manifolds (which arise as the master and moduli spaces of BFTs), the translation between square moves in the graph and Seiberg duality and the identification of dual theories by means of the underlying Calabi-Yaus, the phenomenon of loop reduction and the interpretation of the boundary operator for cells in the positive Grassmannian as higgsing in the BFT. We develop a technique based on generalized Kasteleyn matrices that permits an efficient determination of the Calabi-Yau geometries associated to arbitrary graphs. Our techniques allow us to go beyond the planar limit by both increasing the number of boundaries of the graphs and the genus of the underlying Riemann surface. Our investigation suggests a central role for Calabi-Yau manifolds in the context of leading singularities, whose full scope is yet to be uncovered.

Dimer Models and Integrable Systems

We explore various aspects of the correspondence between dimer models and integrable systems recently introduced by Goncharov and Kenyon. Dimer models give rise to relativistic integrable systems that match those arising from 5d N=1 gauge theories studied by Nekrasov. We apply the correspondence to dimer models associated to the Y^{p,0} geometries, showing that they give rise to the relativistic generalization of the periodic Toda chain originally studied by Ruijsenaars. The correspondence reduces the calculation of all conserved charges to a straightforward combinatorial problem of enumerating non-intersecting paths in the dimer model. We show how the usual periodic Toda chain emerges in the non-relativistic limit and how the Lax operator corresponds to the Kasteleyn matrix of the dimer model. We discuss how the dimer models for general Y^{p,q} manifolds give rise to other relativistic integrable systems, generalizing the periodic Toda chain and construct the integrable systems for general Y^{p,p} explicitly. The impurities introduced in the construction of Y^{p,q} quivers are identified with impurities in twisted sl(2) XXZ spin chains. Finally we discuss how the physical concept of higgsing a dimer model provides an efficient method for producing new integrable systems starting from known ones. We illustrate this idea by constructing the integrable systems for higgsings of Y^{4,0}.

Free Energy vs Sasaki-Einstein Volume for Infinite Families of M2-Brane Theories

We investigate infinite families of 3d N=2 superconformal Chern-Simons quivers with an arbitrarily large number of gauge groups arising on M2-branes over toric CY_4's. These theories have the same matter content and superpotential of those on D3-branes probing cones over L^{a,b,a} Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. For all these infinite families, we explicitly show the correspondence between the free energy F on S^3 and the volume of the 7-dimensional base of the associated CY_4, even before extremization. Our results add to those existing in the literature, providing further support for the correspondence. We develop a lifting algorithm, based on the Type IIB realization of these theories, that takes from CY_3's to CY_4's and we use it to efficiently generate the models studied in the paper. We also introduce a procedure, based on the mapping between extremal points in the toric diagram (GLSM fields) and chiral fields in the quiver, which systematically translates symmetries of the toric diagram into constraints of the trial R-charges of the quiver, beyond those arising from marginality of the superpotential. This method can be exploited for reducing the dimension of the space of trial R-charges over which the free energy is maximized. Finally, we show that in all the infinite families we consider F^2 can be expressed, even off-shell, as a quartic function in R-charges associated to certain 5-cycles. This suggests that a quartic formula on R-charges, analogous to a similar cubic function for the central charge a in 4d, exists for all toric toric CY_4's and we present some ideas regarding its general form.

New Directions in Bipartite Field Theories

We perform a detailed investigation of Bipartite Field Theories (BFTs), a general class of 4d N=1 gauge theories which are defined by bipartite graphs. This class of theories is considerably expanded by identifying a new way of assigning gauge symmetries to graphs. A new procedure is introduced in order to determine the toric Calabi-Yau moduli spaces of BFTs. For graphs on a disk, we show that the matroid polytope for the corresponding cell in the Grassmannian coincides with the toric diagram of the BFT moduli space. A systematic BFT prescription for determining graph reductions is presented. We illustrate our ideas in infinite classes of BFTs and introduce various operations for generating new theories from existing ones. Particular emphasis is given to theories associated to non-planar graphs.

Towards the Continuous Limit of Cluster Integrable Systems

We initiate the study of how to extend the correspondence between dimer models and (0+1)-dimensional cluster integrable systems to (1+1) and (2+1)-dimensional continuous integrable field theories, addressing various points that are necessary for achieving this goal. We first study how to glue and split two integrable systems, from the perspectives of the spectral curve, the resolution of the associated toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds and Higgsing in quiver theories on D3-brane probes. We identify a continuous parameter controlling the decoupling between the components and present two complementary methods for determining the dependence on this parameter of the dynamical variables of the integrable system. Interested in constructing systems with an infinite number of degrees of freedom, we study the combinatorics of integrable systems built up from a large number of elementary components, and introduce a toy model capturing important features expected to be present in a continuous reformulation of cluster integrable systems.

Colored BPS Pyramid Partition Functions, Quivers and Cluster Transformations

We investigate the connections between flavored quivers, dimer models, and BPS pyramids for generic toric Calabi-Yau threefolds from various perspectives. We introduce a purely field theoretic definition of both finite and infinite pyramids in terms of quivers with flavors. These pyramids are associated to the counting of BPS invariants for generic toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. We discuss how cluster transformations provide an efficient recursive method for computing pyramid partition functions and show that the recursion is equivalent to the multidimensional octahedron recurrence. Transitions between different pyramids are related to Seiberg dualities, and we offer complimentary characterizations of these transitions in terms of the motion of zonotopes and duality webs. Our methods apply to completely general geometries including those with vanishing 4-cycles, which are associated to chiral quivers, thus overcoming one of the main limitations in the existing literature. We illustrate our ideas with explicit results for the infinite family of L^{a,b,c} geometries, dP_2, pseudo-dP_2, and dP_3. The counting of pyramid partitions for dP_1 gives rise to the Somos-4 sequence, while dP_2 and pseudo-dP_2 generate the Somos-5 sequence. Our results for dP_3 reproduce and extend those previously obtained for this theory, which were originally obtained from dimer shuffling.

Dimer Models, Integrable Systems and Quantum Teichmuller Space

We introduce a correspondence between dimer models (and hence superconformal quivers) and the quantum Teichmuller space of the Riemann surfaces associated to them by mirror symmetry. Via the untwisting map, every brane tiling gives rise to a tiling of the Riemann surface with faces surrounding punctures. We explain how to obtain an ideal triangulation by dualizing this tiling. In order to do so, tiling nodes of valence greater than 3 (equivalently superpotential terms of order greater than 3 in the corresponding quiver gauge theories) must be decomposed by the introduction of 2-valent nodes. From a quiver gauge theory perspective, this operation corresponds to integrating-in massive fields. Fock coordinates in Teichmuller space are in one-to-one correspondence with chiral fields in the quiver. We present multiple explicit examples, including infinite families of theories, illustrating how the right number of Fock coordinates is generated by this procedure. Finally, we explain how Chekhov and Fock commutation relations between coordinates give rise to the commutators associated to dimer models by Goncharov and Kenyon in the context of quantum integrable systems. For generic dimer models (i.e. those containing nodes that are not 3-valent), this matching requires the introduction of a natural generalization of Chekhov and Fock rules. We also explain how urban renewal in the original brane tiling (Seiberg duality for the quivers) is mapped to flips of the ideal triangulation.

Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking, with Flavor

We explore calculable models with low-energy supersymmetry where the flavor hierarchy is generated by quark and lepton compositeness, and where the composites emerge from the same sector that dynamically breaks supersymmetry. The observed pattern of Standard Model fermion masses and mixings is obtained by identifying the various generations with composites of different dimension in the ultraviolet. These "single-sector" supersymmetry breaking models give rise to various spectra of soft masses which are, in many cases, quite distinct from what is commonly found in models of gauge or gravity mediation. In typical models which satisfy all flavor-changing neutral current constraints, both the first and second generation sparticles have masses of order 20 TeV, while the stop mass is near 1 TeV. In other cases, all sparticles obtain masses of order 1 TeV predominantly from gauge mediation, even though the first two generations are composite.

Gauge theories from D7-branes over vanishing 4-cycles

We study quiver gauge theories on D7-branes wrapped over vanishing holomorphic 4-cycles. We investigate how to incorporate O7-planes and/or flavor D7-branes, which are necessary to cancel anomalies. These theories are chiral, preserve four supercharges and exhibit very rich infrared dynamics. Geometric transitions and duality in the presence of O-planes are analyzed. We study the Higgs branch of these quiver theories, showing the emergence of fuzzy internal dimensions. This branch is related to noncommutative instantons on the divisor wrapped by the seven-branes. Our results have a natural application to the recently introduced F(uzz) limit of F-theory.

Multi-Flux Warped Throats and Cascading Gauge Theories

We describe duality cascades and their infrared behavior for systems of D3-branes at singularities given by complex cones over del Pezzo surfaces (and related examples), in the presence of fractional branes. From the gauge field theory viewpoint, we show that D3-branes probing the infrared theory have a quantum deformed moduli space, given by a complex deformation of the initial geometry to a simpler one. This implies that for the dual supergravity viewpoint, the gauge theory strong infrared dynamics smoothes out the naked singularities of the recently constructed warped throat solutions with 3-form fluxes, describing the cascading RG flow of the gauge theory. This behavior thus generalizes the Klebanov-Strassler deformation of the conifold. We describe several explicit examples, including models with several scales of strong gauge dynamics. In the regime of widely separated scales, the dual supergravity solutions should correspond to throats with several radial regions with different exponential warp factors. These rich throat geometries are expected to have interesting applications in compactification and model building. Along our studies, we also construct explicit duality cascades for gauge theories with irrational R-charges, obtained from D-branes probing complex cones over dP1 and dP2.

Phenomenological Models of Holographic Superconductors and Hall currents

We study general models of holographic superconductivity parametrized by four arbitrary functions of a neutral scalar field of the bulk theory. The models can accommodate several features of real superconductors, like arbitrary critical temperatures and critical exponents in a certain range, and perhaps impurities, boundary or thickness effects. We find analytical expressions for the critical exponents of the general model and show that they satisfy the Rushbrooke identity. An important subclass of models exhibits second order phase transitions. A study of the specific heat shows that general models can also describe holographic superconductors undergoing first, second and third (or higher) order phase transitions. We discuss how small deformations of the HHH model lead to the appearance of resonance peaks in the conductivity, which become narrower as the temperature is gradually decreased, without the need for tuning mass of the scalar to be close to the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. Finally, we investigate the inclusion of a generalized "theta term" producing Hall effect without magnetic field.

Single-Sector Supersymmetry Breaking in Supersymmetric QCD

We construct examples of single-sector supersymmetry breaking based on simple deformations of supersymmetric QCD with (weakly) gauged flavor group. These theories are calculable in a weakly coupled Seiberg dual description. In these models, some of the particles in the first two generations of quarks and leptons are composites of the same strong dynamics which leads to dynamical supersymmetry breaking. Such models can explain the hierarchies of Yukawa couplings in the Standard Model, in a way that predictively correlates with the spectrum of SUSY-breaking soft terms.

A general class of holographic superconductors

We introduce a simple generalization of the basic holographic superconductor model in which the spontaneous breaking of a global U(1) symmetry occurs via the Stueckelberg mechanism. This more general setting allows tuning features such as the order of the transition. The physical vacuum of the condensed phase and the order of the transition are determined by a detailed analysis of the free energy of the system. For first order transitions, we identify a metastable phase above the critical temperature. In this case, the conductivity shows additional poles, thus suggesting that the condensate has internal structure. We comment on the possibility of obtaining second order phase transitions with non mean-field critical exponents.

A holographic approach to phase transitions

We provide a description of phase transitions at finite temperature in strongly coupled field theories using holography. For this purpose, we introduce a general class of gravity duals to superconducting theories that exhibit various types of phase transitions (first or second order with both mean and non-mean field behavior) as parameters in their Lagrangian are changed. Moreover the size and strength of the conductivity coherence peak can also be controlled. Our results suggest that certain parameters in the gravitational dual control the interactions responsible for binding the condensate and the magnitude of its fluctuations close to the transition.

Chaotic Duality in String Theory

We investigate the general features of renormalization group flows near superconformal fixed points of four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with gravity duals. The gauge theories we study arise as the world-volume theory on a set of D-branes at a Calabi-Yau singularity where a del Pezzo surface shrinks to zero size. Based mainly on field theory analysis, we find evidence that such flows are often chaotic and contain exotic features such as duality walls. For a gauge theory where the del Pezzo is the Hirzebruch zero surface, the dependence of the duality wall height on the couplings at some point in the cascade has a self-similar fractal structure. For a gauge theory dual to CP^2 blown up at a point, we find periodic and quasi-periodic behavior for the gauge theory couplings that does not violate the a-conjecture. Finally, we construct supergravity duals for these del Pezzos that match our field theory beta functions.

Unhiggsing the del Pezzo

We develop an unhiggsing procedure for finding the D-brane probe world volume gauge theory for blowups of geometries whose gauge theory data are known. As specific applications we unhiggs the well-studied theories for the cone over the third del Pezzo surface. We arrive at what we call pseudo del Pezzos and these will constitute a first step toward the understanding of higher, non toric del Pezzos. Moreover, our methods and results give further support for toric duality as well as obtaining superpotentials from global symmetry considerations.
