Spatially Resolved Gas Flows Around the Milky Way

We present spatially resolved measurements of cool gas flowing into and out of the Milky Way (MW), using archival ultraviolet spectra of background quasars from the Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. We co-add spectra of different background sources at close projected angular separation on the sky. This novel stacking technique dramatically increases the signal-to-noise ratio of the spectra, allowing detection of low column density gas (down to EWEW > 2 mA). We identify absorption as inflowing or outflowing, by using blue/redshifted high velocity cloud (HVC) absorption components in the Galactocentric rest frame, respectively. The mass surface densities of inflowing and outflowing gas both vary by more than an order of magnitude across the sky, with mean values of ⟨Σin⟩≳104.6±0.1\langle Σ_{in}\rangle \gtrsim 10^{4.6\pm0.1} M⊙ kpc−2M_{\odot}\,\mathrm{kpc}^{-2} for inflowing gas and ⟨Σout⟩≳103.5±0.1\langle Σ_{out}\rangle \gtrsim 10^{3.5\pm 0.1} M⊙ kpc−2M_{\odot}\,\mathrm{kpc}^{-2} for outflowing gas, respectively. The mass flow rate surface densities (mass flow rates per unit area) also show large variation across the sky with ⟨Σ˙(d)in⟩≳(10−3.6±0.1)(d/12kpc)−1M⊙ kpc−2yr−1\langle \dotΣ(d)_{in}\rangle \gtrsim (10^{-3.6\pm0.1})(d/12 \mathrm{kpc})^{-1} M_{\odot}\,\mathrm{kpc}^{-2} \mathrm{yr}^{-1} for inflowing and ⟨Σ˙(d)out⟩≳(10−4.8±0.1)(d/12 kpc)−1M⊙ kpc−2 yr−1\langle \dotΣ(d)_{out}\rangle \gtrsim (10^{-4.8\pm0.1})(d/12\,\mathrm{kpc})^{-1} M_{\odot}\,\mathrm{kpc}^{-2}\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1} for outflowing gas, respectively. The regions with highest surface mass density of inflowing gas are clustered at smaller angular scales (θ<40∘θ< 40^\circ). This indicates that most of the mass in inflowing gas is confined to small, well-defined structures, whereas the distribution of outflowing gas is spread more uniformly throughout the sky. Our study confirms that the MW is predominantly accreting gas, but is also losing a non-negligible mass of gas via outflow.

Canonical bases for the quantum enveloping algebra of gl(m|1) and its modules

We construct a crystal basis for the negative half of the quantum group U associated to the standard super Cartan datum of gl(m|1), which is compatible with known crystals on Kac modules and simple modules. We show that these crystals admit globalization functions which produce compatible canonical bases. We then define a braid group action on a family of quantum groups including U, and use this action to show that our canonical basis agrees with those constructed from PBW bases. Finally, we explicitly compute some small-rank examples.

Quantum Shuffles and Quantum Supergroups of Basic Type

We initiate the study of several distinguished bases for the positive half of a quantum supergroup UqU_q associated to a general super Cartan datum (I,(⋅,⋅))(\mathrm{I}, (\cdot,\cdot)) of basic type inside a quantum shuffle superalgebra. The combinatorics of words for an arbitrary total ordering on I\mathrm{I} is developed in connection with the root system associated to I\mathrm{I}. The monomial, Lyndon, and PBW bases of UqU_q are constructed, and moreover, a direct proof of the orthogonality of the PBW basis is provided within the framework of quantum shuffles. Consequently, the canonical basis is constructed for UqU_q associated to the standard super Cartan datum of type gl(n∣1)\mathfrak{gl}(n|1), osp(1∣2n)\mathfrak{osp}(1|2n), or osp(2∣2n)\mathfrak{osp}(2|2n) or an arbitrary non-super Cartan datum. In the non-super case, this refines Leclerc's work and provides a new self-contained construction of canonical bases. The canonical bases of UqU_q, of its polynomial modules, as well as of Kac modules in the case of quantum gl(2∣1)\mathfrak{gl}(2|1) are explicitly worked out.

Quantum Supergroups I. Foundations

In this part one of a series of papers, we introduce a new version of quantum covering and super groups with no isotropic odd simple root, which is suitable for the studies of integrable modules, integral forms and bar-involution. A quantum covering group involves a quantum parameter q and a sign parameter pi squaring to 1, and it specializes to a quantum supergroup when pi=-1. Following Lusztig, we formulate and establish various structural results of the quantum covering groups, including bilinear form, quasi-R-matrix, Casimir, character formulas for integrable modules, and higher Serre relations.

Quantum Supergroups III. Twistors

We establish direct connections at several levels between quantum groups and supergroups associated to bar-consistent super Cartan datum by constructing an automorphism (called twistor) in the setting of covering quantum groups. The canonical bases of the halves of quantum groups and supergroups are shown to match under the twistor up to powers of a square root of -1. We further show that the modified quantum group and supergroup are isomorphic over the rational function field adjoint with a square root of -1, by constructing a twistor on the modified covering quantum group. An equivalence of categories of weight modules for quantum groups and supergroups follows.
