Nucleon Helicity and Transversity Parton Distributions from Lattice QCD

We present the first lattice-QCD calculation of the isovector polarized parton distribution functions (both helicity and transversity) using the large-momentum effective field theory (LaMET) approach for direct Bjorken-$x$ dependence. We first review the detailed steps of the procedure in the unpolarized case, then generalize to the helicity and transversity cases. We also derive a new mass-correction formulation for all three cases. We then compare the effects of each finite-momentum correction using lattice data calculated at $M_π\approx 310$ MeV. Finally, we discuss the implications of these results for the poorly known antiquark structure and predict the sea-flavor asymmetry in the transversely polarized nucleon.

Flavor Structure of the Nucleon Sea from Lattice QCD

We present the first direct lattice calculation of the isovector sea-quark parton distributions using the formalism developed recently by one of the authors. We use $N_f=2+1+1$ HISQ lattice gauge ensembles (generated by MILC Collaboration) and clover valence fermions with pion mass 310 MeV. We are able to obtain the qualitative features of the nucleon sea flavor structure even at this large pion mass: We observe violation of the Gottfried sum rule, indicating $\overline{d}(x) > \overline{u}(x)$; the helicity distribution obeys $Δ\overline{u}(x) > Δ\overline{d}(x)$, which is consistent with the STAR data at large and small leptonic pseudorapidity.

Nucleon Charges and Electromagnetic Form Factors from 2+1+1-Flavor Lattice QCD

We present lattice-QCD results on the nucleon isovector axial, scalar and tensor charges, the isovector electromagnetic Dirac and Pauli form factors, and the connected parts of the isoscalar charges. The calculations have been done using two ensembles of HISQ lattices generated by the MILC Collaboration with 2+1+1 dynamical flavors at a lattice spacing of 0.12 fm and with light-quark masses corresponding to pions with masses 310 and 220 MeV. We perform a systematic study including excited-state degrees of freedom and examine the dependence of the extracted nucleon matrix elements on source-sink separation. This study demonstrates with high-statistics data that including excited-state contributions and generating data at multiple separations is necessary to remove contamination that would otherwise lead to systematic error. We also determine the renormalization constants of the associated quark bilinear operators in the RI-sMOM scheme and make comparisons of our renormalized results with previous dynamical-lattice calculations.

Probing TeV scale physics in precision UCN decays

We present the calculation of matrix elements of iso-vector scalar, axial and tensor charges between a neutron and a proton state on dynamical $N_f=2+1+1$ HISQ configurations generated by the MILC Collaboration using valence clover fermions. These matrix elements are needed to probe novel scalar and tensor interactions in neutron beta-decay that can arise in extensions to the Standard Model at the TeV scale. Results are presented at one value of the lattice spacing, $a=0.12$ fm, and two values of light quarks corresponding to $M_π=310$ and $220$ MeV. We discuss two sources of systematic errors, contribution of excited states to these matrix elements and the renormalization constants, and the efficacy of methods used to control them.

Neutral Meson Decays into Two Photons from Lattice QCD

A precision determination of the neutral-pion width would improve determinations of the splitting between the up- and down-quark masses, and matrix elements for the decay of neutral mesons into two photons could play a role in the attempt to probe beyond-the-Standard Model physics in muon $g-2$ experiments. The theoretical error is dominated by hadronic light-by-light diagrams, and since direct measurements are extremely difficult, model calculations factorize it into two-photon diagrams connected by the lightest hadrons. We employ perturbative techniques to express the photon as a superposition of QCD eigenstates accessible in lattice-QCD calculations and found that vector-meson dominance is a poor description of the two-photon decay process when both photons are off shell.

Approaching Conformality with Ten Flavors

We present first results for lattice simulations, on a single volume, of the low-lying spectrum of an SU(3) Yang-Mills gauge theory with ten light fermions in the fundamental representation. Fits to the fermion mass dependence of various observables are found to be globally consistent with the hypothesis that this theory is within or just outside the strongly-coupled edge of the conformal window, with mass anomalous dimension consistent with 1 over the range of scales simulated. We stress that we cannot rule out the possibility of spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking at scales well below our infrared cutoff. We discuss important systematic effects, including finite-volume corrections, and consider directions for future improvement.

Multigrid Algorithms for Domain-Wall Fermions

We describe an adaptive multigrid algorithm for solving inverses of the domain-wall fermion operator. Our multigrid algorithm uses an adaptive projection of near-null vectors of the domain-wall operator onto coarser four-dimensional lattices. This extension of multigrid techniques to a chiral fermion action will greatly reduce overall computation cost, and the elimination of the fifth dimension in the coarse space reduces the relative cost of using chiral fermions compared to discarding this symmetry. We demonstrate near-elimination of critical slowing as the quark mass is reduced and small volume dependence, which may be suppressed by taking advantage of the recursive nature of the algorithm.

Probing novel TeV physics through precision calculations of scalar and tensor charges of the nucleon

We present an update on the calculation of matrix elements of iso-vector scalar, axial and tensor charges between a neutron and a proton state. These matrix elements are needed to probe novel scalar and tensor interactions in neutron beta-decay that can arise in extensions of the Standard Model at the TeV scale. Our calculations are being done using valence clover fermions on dynamical N_f=2+1+1 HISQ configurations generated by the MILC Collaboration. We provide preliminary estimates of the dependence of these matrix elements on the light quark masses, lattice spacing, and the time separation between the source and sink of the nucleons. We also find that the renormalization constants calculated using the RI-sMOM scheme are close to unity for the HYP smeared HISQ lattices.

Probing TeV scale physics via ultra cold neutron decays and calculating non-standard baryon matrix elements

We motivate undertaking precision analyses of neutron decays to look for signatures of new scalar and tensor interactions that can arise in extensions of the Standard Model at the TeV scale. The key ingrediant needed to connect experimental data with theoretical analysis are high-precision calculations of matrix elements of isovector bilinear operators between the decaying neutron and final state proton. We describe the status of our Lattice QCD program of using valence clover fermions on dynamical N_f=2+1+1 HISQ configurations generated by the MILC Collaboration. On the theoretical side we use the effective field theory method and provide both model independent and dependent analyses to obtain bounds on possible scalar and tensor interactions, both from low energy experiments and LHC data.

Theoretical Bounds on New Four-Fermion Interactions and TeV Scale Physics

The standard model weak interactions can be described by four-fermion V-A operators at low energies. New physics at the TeV scale can, however, generate the other Lorentz structures. In this talk, we review the constraints on such interactions from nuclear and hadronic decays, as well as from collider searches. Currently the most stringent bounds come from the analysis of the 0+ to 0+ nuclear and the pi to e nu gamma radiative pion decays. In the near future, the ultracold neutron beta decay experiments and the direct LHC measurements will compete in setting the most stringent bounds, provided, however, that the neutron-to-proton non-perturbative transition matrix elements can be calculated to a level of 10-20% accuracy.

WW Scattering Parameters via Pseudoscalar Phase Shifts

Using domain-wall lattice simulations, we study pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar scattering in the maximal isospin channel for an SU(3) gauge theory with two and six fermion flavors in the fundamental representation. This calculation of the S-wave scattering length is related to the next-to-leading order corrections to WW scattering through the low-energy coefficients of the chiral Lagrangian. While two and six flavor scattering lengths are similar for a fixed ratio of the pseudoscalar mass to its decay constant, six-flavor scattering shows a somewhat less repulsive next-to-leading order interaction than its two-flavor counterpart. Estimates are made for the WW scattering parameters and the plausibility of detection is discussed.

Nucleon and Pion Form Factors from $N_f=2+1$ Anisotropic Lattices

We report a recent lattice-QCD calculation of nucleon and pion electromagnetic form factors and nucleon axial form factors, with special emphasis on large $Q^2$. Conventional lattice form-factor calculations can only reach about 2.5 GeV$^2$, but in this work the transfer momentum is pushed as large as 6 GeV$^2$. Here, we demonstrate the results on 2+1-flavor anisotropic clover lattices for the nucleon and pion, comparing with low-$Q^2$ quantities, such as Dirac and Pauli radii, anomalous magnetic moments, $g_A$ and $M_A$. Our approach can be applied to isotropic lattices and lattices with smaller lattice spacing to achieve even larger-$Q^2$ form factors. The form factors are processed to obtain transverse charge and magnetization densities across 2-dimensional impact-parameter space. These measurements could give important theoretical input to experiments, such as those of JLab's 12-GeV program, and provide insight into hadronic structure.

Probing Novel Scalar and Tensor Interactions from (Ultra)Cold Neutrons to the LHC

Scalar and tensor interactions were once competitors to the now well-established V-A structure of the Standard Model weak interactions. We revisit these interactions and survey constraints from low-energy probes (neutron, nuclear, and pion decays) as well as collider searches. Currently, the most stringent limit on scalar and tensor interactions arise from 0+ -> 0+ nuclear decays and the radiative pion decay pi -> e nu gamma, respectively. For the future, we find that upcoming neutron beta decay and LHC measurements will compete in setting the most stringent bounds. For neutron beta decay, we demonstrate the importance of lattice computations of the neutron-to-proton matrix elements to setting limits on these interactions, and provide the first lattice estimate of the scalar charge and a new average of existing results for the tensor charge. Data taken at the LHC is currently probing these interactions at the 10^-2 level (relative to the standard weak interactions), with the potential to reach the 10^-3 level. We show that, with some theoretical assumptions, the discovery of a charged spin-0 resonance decaying to an electron and missing energy implies a lower limit on the strength of scalar interactions probed at low energy.

Heavy-Baryon Spectroscopy from Lattice QCD

We use a four-dimensional lattice calculation of the full-QCD (quantum chromodynamics, the non-abliean gauge theory of the strong interactions of quarks and gluons) path integrals needed to determine the masses of the charmed and bottom baryons. In the charm sector, our results are in good agreement with experiment within our systematics, except for the spin-1/2 $Ξ_{cc}$, for which we found the isospin-averaged mass to be $Ξ_{cc}$ to be $3665\pm17\pm14^{+0}_{-78}$ MeV. We predict the mass of the (isospin-averaged) spin-1/2 $Ω_{cc}$ to be $3763\pm19\pm26^{+13}_{-79}$ {MeV}. In the bottom sector, our results are also in agreement with experimental observations and other lattice calculations within our statistical and systematic errors. In particular, we find the mass of the $Ω_b$ to be consistent with the recent CDF measurement. We also predict the mass for the as yet unobserved $Ξ^\prime_b$ to be 5955(27) MeV.

Lattice Calculations of Nucleon Electromagnetic Form Factors at Large Momentum Transfer

In this work, we report a novel technique in lattice QCD for studying the high momentum-transfer region of nucleon form factors. These calculations could give important theoretical input to experiments, such as those of JLab's 12-GeV program and studies of nucleon deformation. There is an extensive history of form-factor calculations on the lattice, primarily with ground states for both the initial and final state. However, determining form factors at large momentum transfer ($Q^2$) has been difficult due to large statistical and systematic errors in this regime. We study the nucleon form factors using three pion masses with both quenched and 2+1-flavor anisotropic lattice configurations with $Q^2$ as large as $6 GeV^2$. These form factors are further processed to obtain transverse charge and magnetization densities across 2-dimensional impact-parameter space. Our approach can be applied to isotropic lattices and lattices with smaller lattice spacing to calculate even larger-$Q^2$ form factors.

Parity Doubling and the S Parameter Below the Conformal Window

We describe a lattice simulation of the masses and decay constants of the lowest-lying vector and axial resonances, and the electroweak S parameter, in an SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f = 2$ and 6 fermions in the fundamental representation. The spectrum becomes more parity doubled and the S parameter per electroweak doublet decreases when $N_f$ is increased from 2 to 6, motivating study of these trends as $N_f$ is increased further, toward the critical value for transition from confinement to infrared conformality.

Toward TeV Conformality

We study the chiral condensate $<\barψ ψ>$ for an SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f$ massless Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation when $N_f$ is increased from 2 to 6. For $N_f=2$, our lattice simulations of $<\barψ ψ>/F^3$, where $F$ is the Nambu-Goldstone-boson decay constant, agree with the measured QCD value. For $N_f = 6$, this ratio shows significant enhancement, presaging an even larger enhancement anticipated as $N_f$ increases further, toward the critical value for transition from confinement to infrared conformality.

The role of multigrid algorithms for LQCD

We report on the first successful QCD multigrid algorithm which demonstrates constant convergence rates independent of quark mass and lattice volume for the Wilson Dirac operator. The new ingredient is the adaptive method for constructing the near null space on which the coarse grid multigrid Dirac operator acts. In addition we speculate on future prospects for extending this algorithm to the Domain Wall and Staggered discretizations, its exceptional suitability for high performance GPU code and its potential impact on simulations at the physical pion mass.

Light-Meson Two-Photon Decays in Full QCD

We present a study of two-photon decays of light mesons, focusing on the neutral pion decay. This important process highlights the effects of the axial anomaly in QCD but has been little studied on the lattice. By applying the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann (LSZ) reduction formula, we reconstruct the electromagnetic matrix elements from three-point vector-vector Green functions calculated on 2+1-flavor isotropic clover lattices.

Terrace-Width Distributions and Step-Step Repulsions on Vicinal Surfaces: Symmetries, Scaling, Simplifications, Subtleties, and Schrödinger

For more than three decades, measurement of terrace width distributions (TWDs) of vicinal crystal surfaces have been recognized as arguably the best way to determine the dimensionless strength $\tilde{A}$ of the elastic repulsion between steps. For sufficiently strong repulsions, the TWD is expected to be Gaussian, with $\tilde{A}$ varying inversely with the squared variance. However, there has been a controversy over the proportionality constant. From another perspective the TWD can be described as a continuous generalized Wigner distribution (CGWD) essentially no more complicated than a Gaussian but a much better approximation at the few calibration points where exact solutions exist. This paper combines concisely the experimentally most useful results from several earlier papers on this subject and describes some advancements that are in progress regarding numerical tests and in using Schrödinger-equation formalism to give greater understanding of the origin of the CGWD and to give hope of extensions to more general interaction potentials between steps. There are many implications for future experiments.
