SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ action on quantum field theories with U(1) subsystem symmetry

We consider SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ action on quantum field theories with U(1) subsystem symmetry in five dimensions. This is an analog of the SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ action considered in arXiv:hep-th/0307041. We show that the exotic level 1 BF theory and the exotic level 1 Chern-Simons theories are trivial and almost trivial, respectively. By using this fact, we define S operation and T operation. These operations make SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ group up to a possible invertible phase that is unity within the space-times treated in this paper. We also demonstrate SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ action on the $φ$ theory as an example.

Gapless edge modes in (4+1)-dimensional topologically massive tensor gauge theory and anomaly inflow for subsystem symmetry

We consider (4+1)-dimensional topologically massive tensor gauge theory. This theory is an analog of the (2+1)-dimensional topologically massive Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. If the space has a boundary, we find that a (3+1)-dimensional gapless theory appears at the boundary. This gapless theory is a chiral version of the (3+1)-dimensional $φ$ theory. This gapless theory is protected by the anomaly inflow mechanism of subsystem symmetry. We also consider the corner of our topologically massive tensor gauge theory, and find that an infinite number of (1+1)-dimensional chiral bosons appear at the corner.

A lattice formulation of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index

Atiyah-Singer index theorem on a lattice without boundary is well understood owing to the seminal work by Hasenfratz et al. But its extension to the system with boundary (the so-called Atiyah- Patodi-Singer index theorem), which plays a crucial role in T-anomaly cancellation between bulk- and edge-modes in 3+1 dimensional topological matters, is known only in the continuum theory and no lattice realization has been made so far. In this work, we try to non-perturbatively define an alternative index from the lattice domain-wall fermion in 3+1 dimensions. We will show that this new index in the continuum limit, converges to the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index defined on a manifold with boundary, which coincides with the surface of the domain-wall.

A physicist-friendly reformulation of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index and its mathematical justification

The Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem describes the bulk-edge correspondence of symmetry protected topological insulators. The mathematical setup for this theorem is, however, not directly related to the physical fermion system, as it imposes on the fermion fields a non-local and unnatural boundary condition known as the "APS boundary condition" by hand. In 2017, we showed that the same integer as the APS index can be obtained from the $η$ invariant of the domain-wall Dirac operator. Recently we gave a mathematical proof that the equivalence is not a coincidence but generally true. In this contribution to the proceedings of LATTICE 2019, we try to explain the whole story in a physicist-friendly way.

Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index on a lattice

We propose a non-perturbative formulation of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer(APS) index in lattice gauge theory, in which the index is given by the $η$ invariant of the domain-wall Dirac operator. Our definition of the index is always an integer with a finite lattice spacing. To verify this proposal, using the eigenmode set of the free domain-wall fermion, we perturbatively show in the continuum limit that the curvature term in the APS theorem appears as the contribution from the massive bulk extended modes, while the boundary $η$ invariant comes entirely from the massless edge-localized modes.

The Anomaly Inflow of the domain-wall fermion in odd dimension

In 1985, Callan and Harvey showed a view of gauge anomaly as a missing current into an extra-dimension, and the total contribution, including the Chern-Simons current in the bulk, is conserved. However in their computation, the edge and bulk contributions are separately evaluated and their cross correlations, which should be relevant at boundary, are simply ignored. This issue has been solved in many approaches. In this work, we revisit this issue with a complete set of eigenstates of free domain-wall Hamiltonian and give the systematic evaluation, easy to take in the higher mass correction and extend to the higher dimension.

TKNN formula for general Hamiltonian

Topological insulators in odd dimensions are characterized by topological numbers. We prove the well-known relation between the topological number given by the Chern character of the Berry curvature and the Chern-Simons level of the low energy effective action for a general class of Hamiltonians bilinear in the fermion with general U(1) gauge interactions including non-minimal couplings by an explicit calculation. A series of Ward-Takahashi identities are crucial to relate the Chern-Simons level to a winding number, which could then be directly reduced to Chern character of Berry curvature by carrying out the integral over the temporal momenta.

Two-dimensional superconformal field theories from Riemann surfaces with boundary

We consider a 2-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) obtained from twisted compactification of the 4-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on a Riemann surface with boundary. We find the boundary conditions to preserve some of the supersymmetry. In particular an N=(2,2) superconformal field theory is obtained from supersymmetry breaking due to the boundary from N=(4,4). In this case we calculate the central charge of the CFT and show its dependence on the topology of the Riemann surface.

M5-branes and Wilson Surfaces in AdS$_{7}$/CFT$_{6}$ Correspondence

We study AdS$_{7}$/CFT$_{6}$ correspondence between M-theory on AdS$_{7} \times S^{4}$ and the 6D $\mathcal{N} = (2,0)$ superconformal field theory. In particular we focus on Wilson surfaces. We use the conjecture that the (2,0) theory compactified on $S^{1}$ is equivalent to the 5D maximal super Yang-Mills (MSYM) and Wilson surfaces wrapping this $S^1$ correspond to Wilson loops in 5D MSYM. The Wilson loops in 5D MSYM obtained by the localization technique result in the Chern-Simons matrix model. We calculate the expectation values of Wilson surfaces in large rank symmetric representations and anti-symmetric representations by using this result. In the gravity side, the expectation values for probe M5-branes wrapping submanifolds of the background are computed. Consequently we find new, non-trivial evidence for the AdS$_{7}$/CFT$_{6}$ correspondence that the results in the gravity side perfectly agree with those in the CFT side.

't Hooft Operators on an Interface and Bubbling D5-Branes

We consider a brane configuration consisting of a D5-brane, D1-branes and D3-branes. According to the AdS/CFT correspondence this system realizes a 't Hooft operator embedded in the interface in the gauge theory side. In the gravity side the near-horizon geometry is AdS_5 x S^5. The D5-brane is treated as a probe in the AdS_5 x S^5 and the D1-branes become the gauge flux on the D5-brane. We examine the condition for preserving appropriate amount of supersymmetry and derive a set of differential equations which is the sufficient and necessary condition. This supersymmetric configuration shows bubbling behavior. We try to derive the relation between the probe D5-brane and the Young diagram which labels the corresponding 't Hooft operator. We propose the dictionary of the correspondence between the Young diagram and the probe D5-brane configuration.

Supersymmetric Boundary Conditions in Three Dimensional N = 2 Theories

We study supersymmetric boundary conditions in 3-dimensional N = 2 Landau-Ginzburg models and abelian gauge theories. In the Landau-Ginzburg model the boundary conditions that preserve (1,1) supersymmetry (A-type) and (2,0) supersymmetry (B-type) on the boundary are classified in terms of subspaces of the target space ("brane"). An A-type brane is a Lagrangian submanifold on which the imaginary part of the superpotential is constant, while a B-type brane is a holomorphic submanifold on which the superpotential is constant. We also consider the N = 2 Maxwell theory with boundary and the abelian duality. Finally we make some comments on N = 2 SQED with boundary condition and the mirror symmetry.

Two-dimensional crystal melting and D4-D2-D0 on toric Calabi-Yau singularities

We construct a two-dimensional crystal melting model which reproduces the BPS index of D2-D0 states bound to a non-compact D4-brane on an arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau singularity. The crystalline structure depends on the toric divisor wrapped by the D4-brane. The molten crystals are in one-to-one correspondence with the torus fixed points of the moduli space of the quiver gauge theory on D-branes. The F- and D-term constraints of the gauge theory are regarded as a generalization of the ADHM constraints on instantons. We also show in several examples that our model is consistent with the wall-crossing formula for the BPS index.

Expectation values of chiral primary operators in holographic interface CFT

We consider the expectation values of chiral primary operators in the presence of the interface in the 4 dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. This interface is derived from D3-D5 system in type IIB string theory. These expectation values are computed classically in the gauge theory side. On the other hand, this interface is a holographic dual to type IIB string theory on AdS_5 x S^5 spacetime with a probe D5-brane. The expectation values are computed by GKPW prescription in the gravity side. We find non-trivial agreement of these two results: the gauge theory side and the gravity side.

Holographic Interface-Particle Potential

We consider two N=4 supersymmetric gauge theories connected by an interface and the gravity dual of this system. This interface is expressed by a fuzzy funnel solution of Nahm's equation in the gauge theory side. The gravity dual is a probe D5-brane in AdS_5 x S^5. The potential energy between this interface and a test particle is calculated in both the gauge theory side and the gravity side by the expectation value of a Wilson loop. In the gauge theory it is evaluated by just substituting the classical solution to the Wilson loop. On the other hand it is done by the on-shell action of the fundamental string stretched between the AdS boundary and the D5-brane in the gravity. We show the gauge theory result and the gravity one agree with each other.

Affine SU(N) algebra from wall-crossings

We study the relation between the instanton counting on ALE spaces and the BPS state counting on a toric Calabi-Yau three-fold. We put a single D4-brane on a divisor isomorphic to A_{N-1}-ALE space in the Calabi-Yau three-fold, and evaluate the discrete changes of BPS partition function of D4-D2-D0 states in the wall-crossing phenomena. In particular, we find that the character of affine SU(N) algebra naturally arises in wall-crossings of D4-D2-D0 states. Our analysis is completely based on the wall-crossing formula for the d=4, N=2 supersymmetric theory obtained by dimensionally reducing the Calabi-Yau three-fold.

Towards the localization of SUSY gauge theory on a curved space

We consider an N=4 supersymmetric gauge theory on a curved space. We try to generalize Pestun's localization calculation on the four-sphere to a more general class of curved spaces. We calculated the Q-exact term to localize the path-integral, and when it becomes positive definite, we obtain a configuration where the path-integral localizes. We also evaluate the super Yang-Mills action in this configuration.

Wall-crossing of D4-D2-D0 and flop of the conifold

We discuss the wall-crossing of the BPS bound states of a non-compact holomorphic D4-brane with D2 and D0-branes on the conifold. We use the Kontsevich-Soibelman wall-crossing formula and analyze the BPS degeneracy in various chambers. In particular we obtain a relation between BPS degeneracies in two limiting attractor chambers related by a flop transition. Our result is consistent with known results and predicts BPS degeneracies in all chambers.

Correlator of Fundamental and Anti-symmetric Wilson Loops in AdS/CFT Correspondence

We study the two circular Wilson loop correlator in which one is of anti-symmetric representation, while the other is of fundamental representation in 4-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. This correlator has a good AdS dual, which is a system of a D5-brane and a fundamental string. We calculated the on-shell action of the string, and clarified the Gross-Ooguri transition in this correlator. Some limiting cases are also examined.

Supercoset CFT's for String Theories on Non-compact Special Holonomy Manifolds

We study aspects of superstring vacua of non-compact special holonomy manifolds with conical singularities constructed systematically using soluble N = 1 superconformal field theories (SCFT's). It is known that Einstein homogeneous spaces G/H generate Ricci flat manifolds with special holonomies on their cones R_+ x G/H, when they are endowed with appropriate geometrical structures, namely, the Sasaki-Einstein, tri-Sasakian, nearly Kahler, and weak G_2 structures for SU(n), Sp(n), G_2, and Spin(7) holonomies, respectively. Motivated by this fact, we consider the string vacua of the type: R^{d-1,1} x (N = 1 Liouville) x (N=1 supercoset CFT on G/H) where we use the affine Lie algebras of G and H in order to capture the geometry associated to an Einstein homogeneous space G/H. Remarkably, we find the same number of spacetime and worldsheet SUSY's in our ``CFT cone'' construction as expected from the analysis of geometrical cones over G/H in many examples. We also present an analysis on the possible Liouville potential terms (cosmological constant type operators) which provide the marginal deformations resolving the conical singularities.

Coset Construction of Noncompact Spin(7) and G_2 CFTs

We provide a new class of exactly solvable superconformal field theories that corresponds to type II compactification on manifolds with exceptional holonomies. We combine N=1 Liouville field and N=1 coset models and construct modular invariant partition functions of strings moving on these manifolds. The resulting theories preserve spacetime supersymmetry. Also we explicitly construct chiral currents in these models to realize consistent string theories.

D-branes on a Noncompact Singular Calabi-Yau Manifold

We investigate D-branes on a noncompact singular Calabi-Yau manifold by using the boundary CFT description, and calculate the open string Witten indices between the boundary states. The B-type D-branes turn out to be characterized by the properties of a compact positively curved manifold. We give geometric interpretations to these boundary states in terms of coherent sheaves of the manifold.
