Magnetic quivers and line defects -- On a duality between 3d N=4 unitary and orthosymplectic quivers

Supersymmetric Sp(k) quantum chromodynamics with 8 supercharges in space-time dimensions 3 to 6 can be realised by two different Type II brane configurations in the presence of orientifolds. Consequently, two types of magnetic quivers describe the Higgs branch of the Sp(k) SQCD theory. This is a salient example of a general phenomenon: a given hyper-Kahler Higgs branch may admit several magnetic quiver constructions. It is then natural to wonder if these different magnetic quivers, which are described by 3d N=4 theories, are dual theories. In this work, the unitary and orthosymplectic magnetic quiver theories are subjected to a variety of tests, providing evidence that they are IR dual to each other. For this, sphere partition function and supersymmetric indices are compared. Also, we study half BPS line defects and find interesting regularities from the viewpoints of exact results, brane configurations, and one-form symmetry.

Refined large N duality for knots

We formulate large $N$ duality of $\mathrm{U}(N)$ refined Chern-Simons theory with a torus knot/link in $S^3$. By studying refined BPS states in M-theory, we provide the explicit form of low-energy effective actions of Type IIA string theory with D4-branes on the $Ω$-background. This form enables us to relate refined Chern-Simons invariants of a torus knot/link in $S^3$ to refined BPS invariants in the resolved conifold. Assuming that the extra $\mathrm{U}(1)$ global symmetry acts on BPS states trivially, the duality predicts graded dimensions of cohomology groups of moduli spaces of M2-M5 bound states associated to a torus knot/link in the resolved conifold. Thus, this formulation can be interpreted as a positivity conjecture of refined Chern-Simons invariants of torus knots/links. We also discuss about an extension to non-torus knots.

Colored Kauffman Homology and Super-A-polynomials

We study the structural properties of colored Kauffman homologies of knots. Quadruple-gradings play an essential role in revealing the differential structure of colored Kauffman homology. Using the differential structure, the Kauffman homologies carrying the symmetric tensor products of the vector representation for the trefoil and the figure-eight are determined. In addition, making use of relations from representation theory, we also obtain the HOMFLY homologies colored by rectangular Young tableaux with two rows for these knots. Furthermore, the notion of super-A-polynomials is extended in order to encompass two-parameter deformations of PSL(2,C) character varieties.

Trivalent graphs, volume conjectures and character varieties

The generalized volume conjecture and the AJ conjecture (a.k.a. the quantum volume conjecture) are extended to $U_q(\fraksl_2)$ colored quantum invariants of the theta and tetrahedron graph. The $\SL(2,\bC)$ character variety of the fundamental group of the complement of a trivalent graph with $E$ edges in $S^3$ is a Lagrangian subvariety of the Hitchin moduli space over the Riemann surface of genus $g=E/3+1$. For the theta and tetrahedron graph, we conjecture that the configuration of the character variety is locally determined by large color asymptotics of the quantum invariants of the trivalent graph in terms of complex Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates. Moreover, the $q$-holonomic difference equation of the quantum invariants provides the quantization of the character variety.

Super-A-polynomials for Twist Knots

We conjecture formulae of the colored superpolynomials for a class of twist knots $K_p$ where p denotes the number of full twists. The validity of the formulae is checked by applying differentials and taking special limits. Using the formulae, we compute both the classical and quantum super-A-polynomial for the twist knots with small values of p. The results support the categorified versions of the generalized volume conjecture and the quantum volume conjecture. Furthermore, we obtain the evidence that the Q-deformed A-polynomials can be identified with the augmentation polynomials of knot contact homology in the case of the twist knots.

Localization of N=4 Superconformal Field Theory on S^1 x S^3 and Index

We provide the geometrical meaning of the ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal index. With this interpretation, the ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal index can be realized as the partition function on a Scherk-Schwarz deformed background. We apply the localization method in TQFT to compute the deformed partition function since the deformed action can be written as a $δ_ε$-exact form. The critical points of the deformed action turn out to be the space of flat connections which are, in fact, zero modes of the gauge field. The one-loop evaluation over the space of flat connections reduces to the matrix integral by which the ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal index is expressed.

Which AdS3 configurations contribute to the SCFT2 elliptic genus?

According to the AdS/CFT duality, the superconformal index of a superconformal field theory should have an AdS interpretation as a Euclidean functional integral with periodic boundary conditions on the fermions. Unlike the thermal case, the Euclidean continuation of the supersymmetric AdS black hole does not smoothly fill in these boundary conditions, leading us to ask the title question. In the context of AdS3/CFT2, we show using supersymmetric localization that the gravitational functional integral for the elliptic genus localizes onto asymptotically AdS3 configurations that are annihilated by a certain supercharge, in the relevant off-shell supergravity theory. For (0,4) superconformal field theories, we find such a localizing configuration in the 5d ${\cal N}=2$ off-shell supergravity theory that is asymptotically $AdS_3 \times S^2$. This configuration interpolates smoothly between the supersymmetric BTZ black hole in the interior and a constant gauge field configuration at the boundary, thus smoothly filling in the (++) boundary conditions for spinors on the boundary torus. It has an action equal to the supersymmetric BTZ black hole, holomorphic in the complex structure $τ$ of the boundary torus. Our results have interesting implications for the black hole Farey tail in AdS3, as well as for higher dimensional AdS theories.

Dijet signals for low mass strings at the LHC

We consider extensions of the standard model based on open strings ending on D-branes, with gauge bosons due to strings attached to stacks of D-branes and chiral matter due to strings stretching between intersecting D-branes. Assuming that the fundamental string mass scale is in the TeV range and the theory is weakly coupled, we discuss possible signals of string physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In such D-brane constructions, the dominant contributions to full-fledged string amplitudes for all the common QCD parton subprocesses leading to dijets are completely independent of the details of compactification, and can be evaluated in a parameter-free manner. We make use of these amplitudes evaluated near the first resonant pole to determine the discovery potential of LHC for the first Regge excitations of the quark and gluon. Remarkably, the reach of LHC after a few years of running can be as high as 6.8 TeV. Even after the first 100 pb^{-1} of integrated luminosity, string scales as high as 4.0 TeV can be discovered. For string scales as high as 5.0 TeV, observations of resonant structures in pp \to {\rm direct} γ+ jet can provide interesting corroboration for string physics at the TeV-scale.

LHC Phenomenology for String Hunters

We consider extensions of the standard model based on open strings ending on D-branes, with gauge bosons due to strings attached to stacks of D-branes and chiral matter due to strings stretching between intersecting D-branes. Assuming that the fundamental string mass scale is in the TeV range and the theory is weakly coupled, we discuss possible signals of string physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In previous works, direct channel excitations of Regge recurrences in parton-parton scattering supplied the outstanding new signature. The present work considers the deviation from standard model expectations for the 4-fermion processes qq\to qq and qq' \to qq', in which the s-channel excitation of string resonances is absent. In this case, we find that Kaluza-Klein recurrences at masses somewhat less than the string scale generate effective 4-fermion contact terms which can significantly enhance the dijet R ratio above its QCD value of about 0.6. The simultaneous observation of a nearby resonant structure in the dijet mass spectrum would provide a "smoking gun" for TeV scale string theory. In this work, we also show that (1) for M_{string}<3.5 TeV, the rates for various topologies arising from the pp \to Z^0 + jet channel could deviate significantly from standard model predictions and (2) that the sizeable cross sections for Regge recurrences can allow a 6σdiscovery for string scales as large as 3 TeV after about 1 year of LHC operation at \sqrt{s} =10 TeV and \int L dt ~ 100 pb^{-1}.

Manifestations of String Theory in Astrophysical Data and at the LHC

With the advent of the LHC and the continuing influx of cosmological data, phenomenological aspects of string theory have received renewed attention in recent years and many problems have been properly incorporated in this framework. In this Dissertation, we suggest new string-related candidates for the origin of dark energy and dark matter and propose ways of searching for string resonances at the LHC.
