Suppression of Superconductivity in Heavy-ion Irradiated 2H-NbSe2 Caused by Negative Pressure

Effects of columnar defects created by 320 MeV Au irradiation on 2H-NbSe2 single crystals with a dose equivalent matching field up to 16 T were studied. Critical temperature is found to be suppressed almost linearly at a rate of 0.07 K/T. At the same time, the lattice parameters a and c are found to be expanded at rates of 0.016%/T and 0.030%/T, respectively. Such a lattice expansion should work as negative pressure to affect Tc. By separating the effect of heavy-ion irradiation on Tc suppression through lattice expansion and disorder, it is found that Tc is suppressed more by lattice expansion rather than by disorder.

Commensurate and Incommensurate Vortex States Confined in Mesoscopic Triangles of Weak Pinning Superconducting Thin Films

We report on the direct observation of vortex states confined in equilateral and isosceles triangular dots of weak pinning amorphous superconducting thin films with a scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscope. The observed images illustrate not only pieces of a triangular vortex lattice as commensurate vortex states, but also incommensurate vortex states including metastable ones. We comparatively analyze vortex configurations found in different sample geometries and discuss the symmetry and stability of commensurate and incommensurate vortex configurations against deformations of the sample shape.

Enhancement of Critical Current Densities in (Ba,K)Fe2As2 by 320 MeV Au Irradiation in Single Crystals and by High-Pressure Sintering in PIT Wires

We demonstrate a large enhancement of critical current density (Jc) up to 1.0x10^7 A/cm2 at 5 K under self-field in (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystals by irradiating 320 MeV Au ions. With the very promising potential of this material in mind, we have fabricated a (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wire through a powder-in-tube method combined with the hot isostatic pressing technique, whose effectiveness has been proven in industrial Bi2223 tapes. The Jc in the wire at 4.2 K has reached 37 kA/cm2 under self-field and 3.0 kA/cm2 at 90 kOe. Magneto-optical imaging of the wire confirmed the large intergranular Jc in the wire core.

Scanning SQUID Microscope Study of Vortex Polygons and Shells in Weak Pinning Disks of an Amorphous Superconducting Film

Direct observation of vortices by the scanning SQUID microscopy was made on large mesoscopic disks of an amorphous MoGe thin film. Owing to the weak pinning nature of the amorphous film, vortices are able to form geometry induced, (quasi-)symmetric configurations of polygons and concentric shells in the large disks. Systematic measurements made on selected disks allow us to trace not only how the vortex pattern evolves with magnetic field, but also how the vortex polygons change in size and rotate with respect to the disk center. The results are in good agreement with theoretical considerations for mesoscopic disks with sufficiently large diameter. A series of vortex images obtained in a disk with a pinning site reveals a unique line symmetry in vortex configurations, resulting in modifications of the shell filling rule and the magic number.
