Markov Chains Generated by Convolutions of Orthogonality Measures

About two dozens of exactly solvable Markov chains on one-dimensional finite and semi-infinite integer lattices are constructed in terms of convolutions of orthogonality measures of the Krawtchouk, Hahn, Meixner, Charlier, $q$-Hahn, $q$-Meixner and little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. By construction, the stationary probability distributions, the complete sets of eigenvalues and eigenvectors are provided by the polynomials and the orthogonality measures. An interesting property possessed by these stationary probability distributions, called `convolutional self-similarity,' is demonstrated.

Free Oscillator Realization of the Laguerre Polynomial

We revisit the radial oscillator from the free oscillator realization point of view. By using a free oscillator, namely the creation/annihilation operators of the harmonic oscillator, we construct an operator that maps the eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator to those of the radial oscillator. As a polynomial part of this relation, we obtain an operator that maps the Hermite polynomials to the Laguerre polynomials.

Wronskian/Casoratian Identities and their Application to Quantum Mechanical Systems

Corresponding to a certain Wronskian identity, we present two types of new Casoratian identities. We apply these identities to the Darboux transformations of quantum mechanical systems. The Wronskian identity is applied to the ordinary quantum mechanics, and the two Casoratian identities are applied to the discrete quantum mechanics with pure imaginary and real shifts, respectively.

Exactly Solvable Discrete Quantum Mechanical Systems and Multi-indexed Orthogonal Polynomials of the Continuous Hahn and Meixner-Pollaczek Types

We present new exactly solvable systems of the discrete quantum mechanics with pure imaginary shifts, whose physical range of the coordinate is the whole real line. These systems are shape invariant and their eigenfunctions are described by the multi-indexed continuous Hahn and Meixner-Pollaczek orthogonal polynomials. The set of degrees of these multi-indexed polynomials are $\{\ell_{\mathcal{D}},\ell_{\mathcal{D}}+1,\ell_{\mathcal{D}}+2,\ldots\}$, where $\ell_{\mathcal{D}}$ is an even positive integer ($\mathcal{D}$ : a multi-index set), but they form a complete set of orthogonal basis in the weighted Hilbert space.

Recurrence Relations of the Multi-Indexed Orthogonal Polynomials V : Racah and $q$-Racah types

In previous papers, we discussed the recurrence relations of the multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials of the Laguerre, Jacobi, Wilson and Askey-Wilson types. In this paper we explore those of the Racah and $q$-Racah types. For the $M$-indexed ($q$-)Racah polynomials, we derive $3+2M$ term recurrence relations with variable dependent coefficients and $1+2L$ term ($L\geq M+1$) recurrence relations with constant coefficients. Based on the latter, the generalized closure relations and the creation and annihilation operators of the quantum mechanical systems described by the multi-indexed ($q$-)Racah polynomials are obtained. In appendix we present a proof and some data of the recurrence relations with constant coefficients for the multi-indexed Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials.

Recurrence Relations of the Multi-Indexed Orthogonal Polynomials : III

In a previous paper, we presented conjectures of the recurrence relations with constant coefficients for the multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials of Laguerre, Jacobi, Wilson and Askey-Wilson types. In this paper we present a proof for the Laguerre and Jacobi cases. Their bispectral properties are also discussed, which give a method to obtain the coefficients of the recurrence relations explicitly. This paper extends to the Laguerre and Jacobi cases the bispectral techniques recently introduced by Gómez-Ullate et al. to derive explicit expressions for the coefficients of the recurrence relations satisfied by exceptional polynomials of Hermite type.

Recurrence Relations of the Multi-Indexed Orthogonal Polynomials IV : closure relations and creation/annihilation operators

We consider the exactly solvable quantum mechanical systems whose eigenfunctions are described by the multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials of Laguerre, Jacobi, Wilson and Askey-Wilson types. Corresponding to the recurrence relations with constant coefficients for the $M$-indexed orthogonal polynomials, it is expected that the systems satisfy the generalized closure relations. In fact we can verify this statement for small $M$ examples. The generalized closure relation gives the exact Heisenberg operator solution of a certain operator, from which the creation and annihilation operators of the system are obtained.

Recurrence Relations of the Multi-Indexed Orthogonal Polynomials : II

In a previous paper we presented $3+2M$ term recurrence relations with variable dependent coefficients for $M$-indexed orthogonal polynomials of Laguerre, Jacobi, Wilson and Askey-Wilson types. In this paper we present (conjectures of) the recurrence relations with constant coefficients for these multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials. The simplest recurrence relations have $3+2\ell$ terms, where $\ell (\geq M)$ is the degree of the lowest member of the multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials.

Reflectionless Potentials for Difference Schrödinger Equations

As a part of the program `discrete quantum mechanics,' we present general reflectionless potentials for difference Schrödinger equations with pure imaginary shifts. By combining contiguous integer wave number reflectionless potentials, we construct the discrete analogues of the $h(h+1)/\cosh^2x$ potential with the integer $h$, which belong to the recently constructed families of solvable dynamics having the $q$-ultraspherical polynomials with $|q|=1$ as the main part of the eigenfunctions. For the general ($h\in\mathbb{R}_{>0}$) scattering theory for these potentials, we need the connection formulas for the basic hypergeometric function ${}_2ϕ_1(\genfrac{}{}{0pt}{}{a,b}{c}|q;z)$ with $|q|=1$, which is not known. The connection formulas are expected to contain the quantum dilogarithm functions as the $|q|=1$ counterparts of the $q$-gamma functions. We propose a conjecture of the connection formula of the ${}_2ϕ_1$ function with $|q|=1$. Based on the conjecture, we derive the transmission and reflection amplitudes, which have all the desirable properties. They provide a strong support to the conjectured connection formula.

Solvable Discrete Quantum Mechanics: q-Orthogonal Polynomials with |q|=1 and Quantum Dilogarithm

Several kinds of q-orthogonal polynomials with |q|=1 are constructed as the main parts of the eigenfunctions of new solvable discrete quantum mechanical systems. Their orthogonality weight functions consist of quantum dilogarithm functions, which are a natural extension of the Euler gamma functions and the q-gamma functions (q-shifted factorials). The dimensions of the orthogonal spaces are finite. These q-orthogonal polynomials are expressed in terms of the Askey-Wilson polynomials and their certain limit forms.

Casoratian Identities for the Wilson and Askey-Wilson Polynomials

Infinitely many Casoratian identities are derived for the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials in parallel to the Wronskian identities for the Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials, which were reported recently by the present authors. These identities form the basis of the equivalence between eigenstate adding and deleting Darboux transformations for solvable (discrete) quantum mechanical systems. Similar identities hold for various reduced form polynomials of the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials, e.g. the continuous q-Jacobi, continuous (dual) (q-)Hahn, Meixner-Pollaczek, Al-Salam-Chihara, continuous (big) q-Hermite, etc.

Equivalences of the Multi-Indexed Orthogonal Polynomials

Multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials describe eigenfunctions of exactly solvable shape-invariant quantum mechanical systems in one dimension obtained by the method of virtual states deletion. Multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials are labeled by a set of degrees of polynomial parts of virtual state wavefunctions. For multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials of Laguerre, Jacobi, Wilson and Askey-Wilson types, two different index sets may give equivalent multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials. We clarify these equivalences. Multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials with both type I and II indices are proportional to those of type I indices only (or type II indices only) with shifted parameters.

Extensions of solvable potentials with finitely many discrete eigenstates

We address the problem of rational extensions of six examples of shape-invariant potentials having finitely many discrete eigenstates. The overshoot eigenfunctions are proposed as candidates unique in this group for the virtual state wavefunctions, which are an essential ingredient for multi-indexed and iso-spectral extensions of these potentials. They have exactly the same form as the eigenfunctions but their degrees are much higher than n_{max} so that their energies are lower than the groundstate energy.

Krein-Adler transformations for shape-invariant potentials and pseudo virtual states

For eleven examples of one-dimensional quantum mechanics with shape-invariant potentials, the Darboux-Crum transformations in terms of multiple pseudo virtual state wavefunctions are shown to be equivalent to Krein-Adler transformations deleting multiple eigenstates with shifted parameters. These are based upon infinitely many polynomial Wronskian identities of classical orthogonal polynomials, i.e. the Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials, which constitute the main part of the eigenfunctions of various quantum mechanical systems with shape-invariant potentials.

Non-polynomial extensions of solvable potentials a la Abraham-Moses

Abraham-Moses transformations, besides Darboux transformations, are well-known procedures to generate extensions of solvable potentials in one-dimensional quantum mechanics. Here we present the explicit forms of infinitely many seed solutions for adding eigenstates at arbitrary real energy through the Abraham-Moses transformations for typical solvable potentials, e.g. the radial oscillator, the Darboux-Pöschl-Teller and some others. These seed solutions are simple generalisations of the virtual state wavefunctions, which are obtained from the eigenfunctions by discrete symmetries of the potentials. The virtual state wavefunctions have been an essential ingredient for constructing multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials through multiple Darboux-Crum transformations. In contrast to the Darboux transformations, the virtual state wavefunctions generate non-polynomial extensions of solvable potentials through the Abraham-Moses transformations.

Recurrence Relations of the Multi-Indexed Orthogonal Polynomials

Ordinary orthogonal polynomials are uniquely characterized by the three term recurrence relations up to an overall multiplicative constant. We show that the newly discovered M-indexed orthogonal polynomials satisfy 3+2M term recurrence relations with non-trivial initial data of the lowest M+1 members. These include the multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials of Laguerre, Jacobi, Wilson and Askey-Wilson types. The M=0 case is the corresponding classical orthogonal polynomials.

Multi-indexed (q-)Racah Polynomials

As the second stage of the project multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials, we present, in the framework of `discrete quantum mechanics' with real shifts in one dimension, the multi-indexed (q-)Racah polynomials. They are obtained from the (q-)Racah polynomials by multiple application of the discrete analogue of the Darboux transformations or the Crum-Krein-Adler deletion of `virtual state' vectors, in a similar way to the multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials reported earlier. The virtual state vectors are the `solutions' of the matrix Schrödinger equation with negative `eigenvalues', except for one of the two boundary points.

Discrete Quantum Mechanics

A comprehensive review of the discrete quantum mechanics with the pure imaginary shifts and the real shifts is presented in parallel with the corresponding results in the ordinary quantum mechanics. The main subjects to be covered are the factorised Hamiltonians, the general structure of the solution spaces of the Schroedinger equation (Crum's theorem and its modification), the shape invariance, the exact solvability in the Schroedinger picture as well as in the Heisenberg picture, the creation/annihilation operators and the dynamical symmetry algebras, the unified theory of exact and quasi-exact solvability based on the sinusoidal coordinates, the infinite families of new orthogonal (the exceptional) polynomials. Two new infinite families of orthogonal polynomials, the X_\ell Meixner-Pollaczek and the X_\ell Meixner polynomials are reported.

Dual Christoffel transformations

Crum's theorem and its modification a la Krein-Adler are formulated for the discrete quantum mechanics with real shifts, whose eigenfunctions consist of orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable. The modification produces the associated polynomials with a finite number of degrees deleted. This in turn provides the well known Christoffel transformation for the dual orthogonal polynomials with the corresponding positions deleted.

Exactly Solvable Quantum Mechanics and Infinite Families of Multi-indexed Orthogonal Polynomials

Infinite families of multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials are discovered as the solutions of exactly solvable one-dimensional quantum mechanical systems. The simplest examples, the one-indexed orthogonal polynomials, are the infinite families of the exceptional Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials of type I and II constructed by the present authors. The totality of the integer indices of the new polynomials are finite and they correspond to the degrees of the `virtual state wavefunctions' which are `deleted' by the generalisation of Crum-Adler theorem. Each polynomial has another integer n which counts the nodes.

Properties of the Exceptional ($X_{\ell}$) Laguerre and Jacobi Polynomials

We present various results on the properties of the four infinite sets of the exceptional $X_{\ell}$ polynomials discovered recently by Odake and Sasaki [{\it Phys. Lett. B} {\bf 679} (2009), 414-417; {\it Phys. Lett. B} {\bf 684} (2010), 173-176]. These $X_{\ell}$ polynomials are global solutions of second order Fuchsian differential equations with $\ell+3$ regular singularities and their confluent limits. We derive equivalent but much simpler looking forms of the $X_{\ell}$ polynomials. The other subjects discussed in detail are: factorisation of the Fuchsian differential operators, shape invariance, the forward and backward shift operations, invariant polynomial subspaces under the Fuchsian differential operators, the Gram-Schmidt orthonormalisation procedure, three term recurrence relations and the generating functions for the $X_{\ell}$ polynomials.

A new family of shape invariantly deformed Darboux-Pöschl-Teller potentials with continuous \ell

We present a new family of shape invariant potentials which could be called a ``continuous \ell version" of the potentials corresponding to the exceptional (X_{\ell}) J1 Jacobi polynomials constructed recently by the present authors. In a certain limit, it reduces to a continuous \ell family of shape invariant potentials related to the exceptional (X_{\ell}) L1 Laguerre polynomials. The latter was known as one example of the `conditionally exactly solvable potentials' on a half line.

Exceptional Askey-Wilson type polynomials through Darboux-Crum transformations

An alternative derivation is presented of the infinitely many exceptional Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials, which were introduced by the present authors in 2009. Darboux-Crum transformations intertwining the discrete quantum mechanical systems of the original and the exceptional polynomials play an important role. Infinitely many continuous Hahn polynomials are derived in the same manner. The present method provides a simple proof of the shape invariance of these systems as in the corresponding cases of the exceptional Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials.

Modification of Crum's Theorem for `Discrete' Quantum Mechanics

Crum's theorem in one-dimensional quantum mechanics asserts the existence of an associated Hamiltonian system for any given Hamiltonian with the complete set of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. The associated system is iso-spectral to the original one except for the lowest energy state, which is deleted. A modification due to Krein-Adler provides algebraic construction of a new complete Hamiltonian system by deleting a finite number of energy levels. Here we present a discrete version of the modification based on the Crum's theorem for the `discrete' quantum mechanics developed by two of the present authors.

Another set of infinitely many exceptional (X_{\ell}) Laguerre polynomials

We present a new set of infinitely many shape invariant potentials and the corresponding exceptional (X_{\ell}) Laguerre polynomials. They are to supplement the recently derived two sets of infinitely many shape invariant thus exactly solvable potentials in one dimensional quantum mechanics and the corresponding X_{\ell} Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials (Odake and Sasaki, Phys. Lett. B679 (2009) 414-417). The new X_{\ell} Laguerre polynomials and the potentials are obtained by a simple limiting procedure from the known X_{\ell} Jacobi polynomials and the potentials, whereas the known X_{\ell} Laguerre polynomials and the potentials are obtained in the same manner from the mirror image of the known X_{\ell} Jacobi polynomials and the potentials.

Crum's Theorem for `Discrete' Quantum Mechanics

In one-dimensional quantum mechanics, or the Sturm-Liouville theory, Crum's theorem describes the relationship between the original and the associated Hamiltonian systems, which are iso-spectral except for the lowest energy state. Its counterpart in `discrete' quantum mechanics is formulated algebraically, elucidating the basic structure of the discrete quantum mechanics, whose Schrödinger equation is a difference equation.

Infinitely many shape invariant discrete quantum mechanical systems and new exceptional orthogonal polynomials related to the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials

Two sets of infinitely many exceptional orthogonal polynomials related to the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials are presented. They are derived as the eigenfunctions of shape invariant and thus exactly solvable quantum mechanical Hamiltonians, which are deformations of those for the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials in terms of a degree \ell (\ell=1,2,...) eigenpolynomial. These polynomials are exceptional in the sense that they start from degree \ell\ge1 and thus not constrained by any generalisation of Bochner's theorem.

Infinitely many shape invariant potentials and cubic identities of the Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials

We provide analytic proofs for the shape invariance of the recently discovered (Odake and Sasaki, Phys. Lett. B679 (2009) 414-417) two families of infinitely many exactly solvable one-dimensional quantum mechanical potentials. These potentials are obtained by deforming the well-known radial oscillator potential or the Darboux-Pöschl-Teller potential by a degree \ell (\ell=1,2,...) eigenpolynomial. The shape invariance conditions are attributed to new polynomial identities of degree 3\ell involving cubic products of the Laguerre or Jacobi polynomials. These identities are proved elementarily by combining simple identities.

Unified theory of exactly and quasi-exactly solvable `Discrete' quantum mechanics: I. Formalism

We present a simple recipe to construct exactly and quasi-exactly solvable Hamiltonians in one-dimensional `discrete' quantum mechanics, in which the Schrödinger equation is a difference equation. It reproduces all the known ones whose eigenfunctions consist of the Askey scheme of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials of a continuous or a discrete variable. The recipe also predicts several new ones. An essential role is played by the sinusoidal coordinate, which generates the closure relation and the Askey-Wilson algebra together with the Hamiltonian. The relationship between the closure relation and the Askey-Wilson algebra is clarified.

Exact Heisenberg operator solutions for multi-particle quantum mechanics

Exact Heisenberg operator solutions for independent `sinusoidal coordinates' as many as the degree of freedom are derived for typical exactly solvable multi-particle quantum mechanical systems, the Calogero systems based on any root system. These Heisenberg operator solutions also present the explicit forms of the annihilation-creation operators for various quanta in the interacting multi-particle systems. At the same time they can be interpreted as multi-variable generalisation of the three term recursion relations for multi-variable orthogonal polynomials constituting the eigenfunctions.

Multi-Particle Quasi Exactly Solvable Difference Equations

Several explicit examples of multi-particle quasi exactly solvable `discrete' quantum mechanical Hamiltonians are derived by deforming the well-known exactly solvable multi-particle Hamiltonians, the Ruijsenaars-Schneider-van Diejen systems. These are difference analogues of the quasi exactly solvable multi-particle systems, the quantum Inozemtsev systems obtained by deforming the well-known exactly solvable Calogero-Sutherland systems. They have a finite number of exactly calculable eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. This paper is a multi-particle extension of the recent paper by one of the authors on deriving quasi exactly solvable difference equations of single degree of freedom.

Unified Theory of Annihilation-Creation Operators for Solvable (`Discrete') Quantum Mechanics

The annihilation-creation operators $a^{(\pm)}$ are defined as the positive/negative frequency parts of the exact Heisenberg operator solution for the `sinusoidal coordinate'. Thus $a^{(\pm)}$ are hermitian conjugate to each other and the relative weights of various terms in them are solely determined by the energy spectrum. This unified method applies to most of the solvable quantum mechanics of single degree of freedom including those belonging to the `discrete' quantum mechanics.
