Immersed disks, slicing numbers and concordance unknotting numbers

We study three knot invariants related to smoothly immersed disks in the four-ball. These are the four-ball crossing number, which is the minimal number of normal double points of such a disk bounded by a given knot; the slicing number, which is the minimal number of crossing changes to a slice knot; and the concordance unknotting number, which is the minimal unknotting number in a smooth concordance class. Using Heegaard Floer homology we obtain bounds that can be used to determine two of these invariants for all prime knots with crossing number ten or less, and to determine the concordance unknotting number for all but thirteen of these knots. As a further application we obtain some new bounds on Gordian distance between torus knots. We also give a strengthened version of Ozsvath and Szabo's obstruction to unknotting number one.

Non-orientable surfaces in homology cobordisms

We investigate constraints on embeddings of a non-orientable surface in a 44-manifold with the homology of M×IM \times I, where MM is a rational homology 33-sphere. The constraints take the form of inequalities involving the genus and normal Euler class of the surface, and either the Ozsváth--Sazbó dd-invariants or Atiyah--Singer ρρ-invariants of MM. One consequence is that the minimal genus of a smoothly embedded surface in L(2p,q)×IL(2p,q) \times I is the same as the minimal genus of a surface in L(2p,q)L(2p,q). We also consider embeddings of non-orientable surfaces in closed 44-manifolds.

Concordance properties of parallel links

We investigate the concordance properties of `parallel links' P(K), given by the (2,0) cable of a knot K. We focus on the question: if P(K) is concordant to a split link, is K necessarily slice? We show that if P(K) is smoothly concordant to a split link, then many smooth concordance invariants of K must vanish, including the tau and s-invariants, and suitably normalized d-invariants of surgeries on K. We also investigate the (2,2m) cables P_m(K), and find obstructions to smooth concordance to the sum of the (2,2m) torus link and a split link.

Smooth concordance of links topologically concordant to the Hopf link

It was shown by Jim Davis that a 2-component link with Alexander polynomial one is topologically concordant to the Hopf link. In this paper, we show that there is a 2-component link with Alexander polynomial one that has unknotted components and is not smoothly concordant to the Hopf link, answering a question of Jim Davis. We construct infinitely many concordance classes of such links, and show that they have the stronger property of not being smoothly concordant to the Hopf link with knots tied in the components.
