Numerical Treatment of Non-local Integral Operators in the Framework of Evolutionary Equations

Using the theory of evolutionary equations, we consider abstract differential equations including non-local integral operators. After providing a condition for the well-posedness of the addressed equation we consider a numerical method of approximating its solution. We provide convergence proofs under conditions on the kernel of the integral operator and the solution and finish the paper with some simulation results.

A Hilbert space approach to fractional differential equations

We study fractional differential equations of Riemann-Liouville and Caputo type in Hilbert spaces. Using exponentially weighted spaces of functions defined on $\mathbb{R}$, we define fractional operators by means of a functional calculus using the Fourier transform. Main tools are extrapolation- and interpolation spaces. Main results are the existence and uniqueness of solutions and the causality of solution operators for non-linear fractional differential equations.

Maximal Regularity for Non-Autonomous Evolutionary Equations

We discuss the issue of maximal regularity for evolutionary equations with non-autonomous coefficients. Here evolutionary equations are abstract partial-differential algebraic equations considered in Hilbert spaces. The catch is to consider time-dependent partial differential equations in an exponentially weighted Hilbert space. In passing, one establishes the time derivative as a continuously invertible, normal operator admitting a functional calculus with the Fourier--Laplace transformation providing the spectral representation. Here, the main result is then a regularity result for well-posed evolutionary equations solely based on an assumed parabolic-type structure of the equation and estimates of the commutator of the coefficients with the square root of the time derivative. We thus simultaneously generalise available results in the literature for non-smooth domains. Examples for equations in divergence form, integro-differential equations, perturbations with non-autonomous and rough coefficients as well as non-autonomous equations of eddy current type are considered.

On a Class of Degenerate Abstract Parabolic Problems and Applications to Some Eddy Current Models

We present an abstract framework for parabolic type equations which possibly degenerate on certain spatial regions. The degeneracies are such that the equations under investigation may admit a type change ranging from parabolic to elliptic type problems. The approach is an adaptation of the concept of so-called evolutionary equations in Hilbert spaces and is eventually applied to a degenerate eddy current type model. The functional analytic setting requires quite minimal assumptions on the boundary and interface regularity. The degenerate eddy current model is justified as a limit model of non-degenerate hyperbolic models of Maxwell's equations.

Numerical methods for changing type systems

In this note we develop a numerical method for partial differential equations with changing type. Our method is based on a unified solution theory found by Rainer Picard for several linear equations from mathematical physics. Parallel to the solution theory already developed, we frame our numerical method in a discontinuous Galerkin approach in space-time with certain exponentially weighted spaces.

On Maximal Regularity for a Class of Evolutionary Equations

The issue of so-called maximal regularity is discussed within a Hilbert space framework for a class of evolutionary equations. Viewing evolutionary equations as a sums of two unbounded operators, showing maximal regularity amounts to establishing that the operator sum considered with its natural domain is already closed. For this we use structural constraints of the coefficients rather than semi-group strategies or sesqui-linear form methods, which would be difficult to come by for our general problem class. Our approach, although limited to the Hilbert space case, complements known strategies for approaching maximal regularity and extends them in a different direction. The abstract findings are illustrated by re-considering some known maximal regularity results within the framework presented.

On Wellposedness for Some Thermo-Piezo-Electric Coupling Models

There is an increasing reliance on mathematical modelling to assist in the design of piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers since this provides a cost-effective and quick way to arrive at a first prototype. Given a desired operating envelope for the sensor the inverse problem of obtaining the associated design parameters within the model can be considered. It is therefore of practical interest to examine the well-posedness of such models. There is a need to extend the use of such sensors into high temperature environments and so this paper shows, for a broad class of models, the well-posedness of the magneto-electro-thermo-elastic problem. Due to its widespread use in the literature, we also show the well-posedness of the quasi-electrostatic case

Well-posedness of Linear Integro-Differential Equations with Operator-valued Kernels

We study linear integro-differential equations in Hilbert spaces with operator-valued kernels and give sufficient conditions for the well-posedness. We show that several types of integro-differential equations are covered by the class of evolutionary equations introduced in [R. Picard. A structural observation for linear material laws in classical mathematical physics. Math. Methods Appl. Sci., 32(14):1768-1803, 2009]. We therefore give criteria for the well-posedness within this framework. As an example we apply our results to the equations of visco-elasticity.

A Note on a Two-Temperature Model in Linear Thermoelasticity

We discuss the so-called two-temperature model in linear thermoelasticity and provide a Hilbert space framework for proving well-posedness of the equations under consideration. With the abstract perspective of evolutionary equations, the two-temperature model turns out to be a coupled system of the elastic equations and an abstract ode. Following this line of reasoning, we propose another model being entirely an abstract ode. We highlight also an alternative way for a two-temperature model, which might be of independent interest.

Exponential stability for second order evolutionary problems

We study the exponential stability of evolutionary equations. The focus is laid on second order problems and we provide a way to rewrite them as a suitable first order evolutionary equation, for which the stability can be proved by using frequency domain methods. The problem class under consideration is broad enough to cover integro-differential equations, delay-equations and classical evolution equations within a unified framework.

On Abstract $\mathrm{grad}-\mathrm{div}$ Systems

For a large class of dynamical problems from mathematical physics the skew-selfadjointness of a spatial operator of the form $A=\left(\begin{array}{cc} 0 & -C^{*}\\ C & 0 \end{array}\right)$, where $C:D\left(C\right)\subseteq H_{0}\to H_{1}$ is a closed densely defined linear operator, is a typical property. Guided by the standard example, where $C=\mathrm{grad}=\left(\begin{array}{c} \partial_{1}\\ \vdots\\ \partial_{n} \end{array}\right)$ (and $-C^{*}=\mathrm{div}$, subject to suitable boundary constraints), an abstract class of operators $C=\left(\begin{array}{c} C_{1}\\ \vdots\\ C_{n} \end{array}\right)$ is introduced (hence the title). As a particular application we consider a non-standard coupling mechanism and the incorporation of diffusive boundary conditions both modeled by setting associated with a skew-selfadjoint spatial operator $A$.

Mother Operators and their Descendants

A mechanism deriving new well-posed evolutionary equations from given ones is inspected. It turns out that there is one particular spatial operator from which many of the standard evolutionary problems of mathematical physics can be generated by this abstract mechanism using suitable projections. The complexity of the dynamics of the phenomena considered can be described in terms of suitable material laws. The idea is illustrated with a number of concrete examples.

On a Connection between the Maxwell System, the Extended Maxwell System, the Dirac Operator and Gravito-Electromagnetism

Maxwell's equation, Dirac's equation and the equation of gravito-electromagnetism are shown to be particular instances of the extended Maxwell system. The equations are discussed in the framework of the theory of evolutionary equations. Their formal relationship are systematically analyzed. Applications to coupled systems such as the Maxwell-Dirac system are also discussed.

Well-posedness via Monotonicity. An Overview

The idea of monotonicity (or positive-definiteness in the linear case) is shown to be the central theme of the solution theories associated with problems of mathematical physics. A "grand unified" setting is surveyed covering a comprehensive class of such problems. We elaborate the applicability of our scheme with a number examples. A brief discussion of stability and homogenization issues is also provided.

Exponential Stability for Linear Evolutionary Equations

We give an approach to exponential stability within the framework of evolutionary equations due to [R. Picard. A structural observation for linear material laws in classical mathematical physics. Math. Methods Appl. Sci., 32(14):1768-1803,2009]. We derive sufficient conditions for exponential stability in terms of the material law operator, which is defined via an analytic and bounded operator-valued function and give an estimate for the expected decay rate. The results are illustrated by three examples: differential-algebraic equations, partial differential equations with finite delay and parabolic integro-differential equations.

On a Comprehensive Class of Linear Control Problems

We discuss a class of linear control problems in a Hilbert space setting. This class encompasses such diverse systems as port-Hamiltonian systems, Maxwell's equations with boundary control or the acoustic equations with boundary control and boundary observation. The boundary control and observation acts on abstract boundary data spaces such that the only geometric constraint on the underlying domain stems from requiring a closed range constraint for the spatial operator part, a requirement which for the wave equation amounts to the validity of a Poincare-Wirtinger-type inequality. We also address the issue of conservativity of the control problems under consideration.

On Integro-Differential Inclusions with Operator-valued Kernels

We study integro-differential inclusions in Hilbert spaces with operator-valued kernels and give sufficient conditions for the well-posedness. We show that several types of integro-differential equations and inclusions are covered by the class of evolutionary inclusions and we therefore give criteria for the well-posedness within this framework. As an example we apply our results to the equations of visco-elasticity and to a class of nonlinear integro-differential inclusions describing Phase Transition phenomena in materials with memory.

On Non-Autonomous Evolutionary Problems

The paper extends well-posedness results of a previously explored class of time-shift invariant evolutionary problems to the case of non-autonomous media. The Hilbert space setting developed for the time-shift invariant case can be utilized to obtain an elementary approach to non-autonomous equations. The results cover a large class of evolutionary equations, where well-known strategies like evolution families may be difficult to use or fail to work. We exemplify the approach with an application to a Kelvin-Voigt-type model for visco-elastic solids.

On Some Models for Elastic Solids with Micro-Structure

We review the concept of well-posedness in the context of evolutionary problems from mathematical physics for a particular subclass of problems from elasticity theory. The complexity of physical phenomena appears as encoded in so called material laws. The usefulness of the structural perspective developed is illustrated by showing that many initial boundary value problems in the theory of elastic solids share the same type of solution theory. Moreover, interconnections of the respective models are discussed via a previously introduced mother/descendant mechanism.

Well-posedness of Non-autonomous Evolutionary Inclusions

A class of non-autonomous differential inclusions in a Hilbert space setting is considered. The well-posedness for this class is shown by establishing the mappings involved as maximal monotone relations. Moreover, the causality of the so established solution operator is addressed. The results are exemplified by the equations of thermoplasticity with time dependent coefficients and by a non-autonomous version of the equations of viscoplasticity with internal variables.

A Functional Analytic Perspective to Delay Differential Equations

We generalize the solution theory for a class of delay type differential equations developed in a previous paper, dealing with the Hilbert space case, to a Banach space setting. The key idea is to consider differentiation as an operator with the whole real line as the underlying domain as a means to incorporate pre-history data. We focus our attention on the issue of causality of the differential equations as a characterizing feature of evolutionary problems and discuss various examples. The arguments mainly rely on a variant of the contraction mapping theorem and a few well-known facts from functional analysis.

A Hilbert Space Perspective on Ordinary Differential Equations with Memory Term

We discuss ordinary differential equations with delay and memory terms in Hilbert spaces. By introducing a time derivative as a normal operator in an appropriate Hilbert space, we develop a new approach to a solution theory covering integro-differential equations, neutral differential equations and general delay differential equations within a unified framework. We show that reasonable differential equations lead to causal solution operators.

A note on elliptic type boundary value problems with maximal monotone relations

In this note we discuss an abstract framework for standard boundary value problems in divergence form with maximal monotone relations as "coefficients". A reformulation of the respective problems is constructed such that they turn out to be unitary equivalent to inverting a maximal monotone relation in a Hilbert space. The method is based on the idea of "tailor-made" distributions as provided by the construction of extrapolation spaces, see e.g. [Picard, McGhee: Partial Differential Equations: A unified Hilbert Space Approach. DeGruyter, 2011]. The abstract framework is illustrated by various examples.

Autonomous Evolutionary Inclusions with Applications to Problems with Nonlinear Boundary Conditions

We study an abstract class of autonomous differential inclusions in Hilbert spaces and show the well-posedness and causality, by establishing the operators involved as maximal monotone operators in time and space. Then the proof of the well-posedness relies on a well-known perturbation result for maximal monotone operators. Moreover, we show that certain types of nonlinear boundary value problems are covered by this class of inclusions and we derive necessary conditions on the operators on the boundary in order to apply the solution theory. We exemplify our findings by two examples.

On a Class of Boundary Control Problems

We discuss a class of linear control problems in a Hilbert space setting, which covers diverse systems such as hyperbolic and parabolic equations with boundary control and boundary observation even including memory terms. We introduce abstract boundary data spaces in which the control and observation equations can be formulated without strong geometric constraints on the underlying domain. The results are applied to a boundary control problem for the equations of visco-elasticity.
