The absolute continuity of convolutions of orbital measures in symmetric spaces

We characterize the absolute continuity of convolution products of orbital measures on the classical, irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces $G/K$ of Cartan type $III$, where $G$ is a non-compact, connected Lie group and $K$ is a compact, connected subgroup. By the orbital measures, we mean the uniform measures supported on the double cosets, $KzK,$ in $G$. The characterization can be expressed in terms of dimensions of eigenspaces or combinatorial properties of the annihilating roots of the elements $z$. A consequence of our work is to show that the convolution product of any rank% $G/K,$ continuous, $K$-bi-invariant measures is absolutely continuous in any of these symmetric spaces, other than those whose restricted root system is type $A_{n}$ or $D_{3}$, when rank$G/K$ $+1$ is needed.

Characterizing the absolute continuity of the convolution of orbital measures in a classical Lie algebra

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a compact, simple Lie algebra of dimension $d$. It is a classical result that the convolution of any $d$ non-trivial, $G$ -invariant, orbital measures is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure on $\mathfrak{g}$ and the sum of any $d$ non-trivial orbits has non-empty interior. The number $d$ was later reduced to the rank of the Lie algebra (or rank $+1$ in the case of type $A_{n}$). More recently, the minimal integer $k=k(X)$ such that the $k$-fold convolution of the orbital measure supported on the orbit generated by $X$ is an absolutely continuous measure was calculated for each $X\in \mathfrak{g}$. In this paper $\mathfrak{g}$ is any of the classical, compact, simple Lie algebras. We characterize the tuples $(X_{1},...,X_{L})$, with $X_{i}\in \mathfrak{g},$ which have the property that the convolution of the $L$ -orbital measures supported on the orbits generated by the $X_{i}$ is absolutely continuous and, equivalently, the sum of their orbits has non-empty interior. The characterization depends on the Lie type of $ \mathfrak{g}$ and the structure of the annihilating roots of the $X_{i}$. Such a characterization was previously known only for type $A_{n}$.

Orbital measures on SU(2)/SO(2)

We let U=SU(2) and K=SO(2) and denote N_{U}(K) the normalizer of K in U. For a an element of U\ N_{U} (K), we let μ_{a} be the normalized singular measure supported in KaK. For p a positive integer, it was proved that μ_{a}^{( p)}, the convolution of p copies of μ_{a}, is absolutely continuous with respect to the Haar measure of the group U as soon as p>=2. The aim of this paper is to go a step further by proving the following two results : (i) for every a in U\ N_{U} (K) and every integer p >=3, the Radon-Nikodym derivative of μ_{a}^{(p)} with respect to the Haar measure m_{U} on U, namely dμ_{a}^{(p)}/d m_{U}, is in L^{2}(U), and (ii) there exist a in U\ N_{U} (K) for which dμ_{a}^{(2)}/ dm_{U} is not in L^{2}(U), hence a counter example to the dichotomy conjecture. Since L^{2} (G) \subseteq L^{1} (G), our result gives in particular a new proof of the result when p>2.
