Sound Event Detection with Boundary-Aware Optimization and Inference

Temporal detection problems appear in many fields including time-series estimation, activity recognition and sound event detection (SED). In this work, we propose a new approach to temporal event modeling by explicitly modeling event onsets and offsets, and by introducing boundary-aware optimization and inference strategies that substantially enhance temporal event detection. The presented methodology incorporates new temporal modeling layers - Recurrent Event Detection (RED) and Event Proposal Network (EPN) - which, together with tailored loss functions, enable more effective and precise temporal event detection. We evaluate the proposed method in the SED domain using a subset of the temporally-strongly annotated portion of AudioSet. Experimental results show that our approach not only outperforms traditional frame-wise SED models with state-of-the-art post-processing, but also removes the need for post-processing hyperparameter tuning, and scales to achieve new state-of-the-art performance across all AudioSet Strong classes.

Emotion Transfer Using Vector-Valued Infinite Task Learning

Style transfer is a significant problem of machine learning with numerous successful applications. In this work, we present a novel style transfer framework building upon infinite task learning and vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. We instantiate the idea in emotion transfer where the goal is to transform facial images to different target emotions. The proposed approach provides a principled way to gain explicit control over the continuous style space. We demonstrate the efficiency of the technique on popular facial emotion benchmarks, achieving low reconstruction cost and high emotion classification accuracy.

Nyquist Filter Design using POCS Methods: Including Constraints in Design

The problem of constrained finite impulse response (FIR) filter design is central to signal processing and arises in a variety of disciplines. This paper surveys the design of such filters using Projection onto convex sets (POCS) and discusses certain commonly encountered time and frequency domain constraints. We study in particular the design of Nyquist filters and propose a simple extension to the work carried out by Haddad, Stark, and Galatsanos in [1]. The flexibility and the ease that this design method provides in terms of accommodating constraints is one of its outstanding features.
