A weighted one-level density of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta-function

We compute the one-level density of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta-function weighted by $|ζ(\frac12+it)|^{2k}$ for $k=1$ and, for test functions with Fourier support in $(-\frac12,\frac12)$, for $k=2$. As a consequence, for $k=1,2$, we deduce under the Riemann hypothesis that $T(\log T)^{1-k^2+o(1)}$ non-trivial zeros of $ζ$, of imaginary parts up to $T$, are such that $ζ$ attains a value of size $(\log T)^{k+o(1)}$ at a point which is within $O(1/\log T)$ from the zero.

Limit laws for rational continued fractions and value distribution of quantum modular forms

We study the limiting distributions of Birkhoff sums of a large class of cost functions (observables) evaluated along orbits, under the Gauss map, of rational numbers in $(0,1]$ ordered by denominators. We show convergence to a stable law in a general setting, by proving an estimate with power-saving error term for the associated characteristic function. This extends results of Baladi and Vallée on Gaussian behaviour for costs of moderate growth. We apply our result to obtain the limiting distribution of values of several key examples of quantum modular forms. We show that central values of the Esterman function ($L$ function of the divisor function twisted by an additive character) tend to have a Gaussian distribution, with a large variance. We give a dynamical, "trace formula free" proof that central modular symbols associated with a holomorphic cusp form for $SL(2,{\bf Z})$ have a Gaussian distribution. We also recover a result of Vardi on the convergence of Dedekind sums to a Cauchy law, using dynamical methods.

Averages of long Dirichlet polynomials

We consider the asymptotic behavior of the mean square of truncations of the Dirichlet series of $ζ(s)^k$. We discuss the connections of this problem with that of the variance of the divisor function in short intervals and in arithmetic progressions, reviewing the recent results on this topic. Finally, we show how these results can all be proved assuming a suitable version of the moments conjecture.

Greedy approximations by signed harmonic sums and the Thue--Morse sequence

Given a real number $τ$, we study the approximation of $τ$ by signed harmonic sums $σ_N(τ) := \sum_{n \leq N}{s_n(τ)}/n$, where the sequence of signs $(s_N(τ))_{N \in\mathbb{N}}$ is defined "greedily" by setting $s_{N+1}(τ) := +1$ if $σ_N(τ) \leq τ$, and $s_{N+1}(τ) := -1$ otherwise. Precisely, we compute the limit points and the decay rate of the sequence $(σ_N(τ)-τ)_{N \in \mathbb{N}}$. Moreover, we give an accurate description of the behavior of the sequence of signs $(s_N(τ))_{N\in\mathbb{N}}$, highlighting a surprising connection with the Thue--Morse sequence.

Modularity and value distribution of quantum invariants of hyperbolic knots

We obtain an exact modularity relation for the $q$-Pochhammer symbol. Using this formula, we show that Zagier's modularity conjecture for a knot $K$ essentially reduces to the arithmeticity conjecture for $K$. In particular, we show that Zagier's conjecture holds for hyperbolic knots $K\neq 7_2$ with at most seven crossings. For $K=4_1$, we also prove a complementary reciprocity formula which allows us to prove a law of large numbers for the values of the colored Jones polynomials at roots of unity. We conjecture a similar formula holds for all knots and we show that this is the case if one assumes a suitable version of Zagier's conjecture.

Partial sums of the cotangent function

We prove the existence of reciprocity formulae for sums of the form $\sum_{m=1}^{k-1}f(\frac{m}{k})\cot(π\frac{m h}k)$ where $f$ is a piecewise $C^1$ function, featuring an alternating phenomenon not visible in the classical case where $f(x)=x$. We deduce bounds for these sums in terms of the continued fraction expansion of $h/k$.

Two arithmetic applications of perturbations of composition operators

We estimate the spectral radius of perturbations of a particular family of composition operators, in a setting where the usual choices of norms do not account for the typical size of the perturbation. We apply this to estimate the growth rate of large moments of a Thue-Morse generating function and of the Stern sequence. This answers in particular a question of Mauduit, Montgomery and Rivat (2018).

Linear correlations of the divisor function

Motivated by arithmetic applications on the number of points in a bihomogeneous variety and on moments of Dirichlet $L$-functions, we provide analytic continuation for the series $\mathcal A_{\boldsymbol{a}}(s):=\sum_{n_1,\dots,n_k\geq1}\frac{d(n_1)\cdots d(n_k)}{(n_1\cdots n_k)^{s}}$ with the sum restricted to solutions of a non-trivial linear equation $a_1n_1+\cdots+a_kn_k=0$. The series $\mathcal A_{\boldsymbol{a}}(s)$ converges absolutely for $\Re(s)>1-\frac1k$ and we show it can be meromorphically continued to $\Re(s)>1-\frac 2{k+1}$ with poles at $s=1-\frac1{k-j}$ only, for $1\leq j< (k-1)/2$. As an application, we obtain an asymptotic formula with power saving error term for the number of points in the variety $a_1x_1y_1+\cdots+a_kx_ky_k=0$ in $\mathbb P^{k-1}(\mathbb Q)\times \mathbb P^{k-1}(\mathbb Q)$.

A quadratic divisor problem and moments of the Riemann zeta-function

We estimate asymptotically the fourth moment of the Riemann zeta-function twisted by a Dirichlet polynomial of length $T^{\frac14 - \varepsilon}$. Our work relies crucially on Watt's theorem on averages of Kloosterman fractions. In the context of the twisted fourth moment, Watt's result is an optimal replacement for Selberg's eigenvalue conjecture. Our work extends the previous result of Hughes and Young, where Dirichlet polynomials of length $T^{\frac{1}{11}-\varepsilon}$ were considered. Our result has several applications, among others to the proportion of critical zeros of the Riemann zeta-function, zero spacing and lower bounds for moments. Along the way we obtain an asymptotic formula for a quadratic divisor problem, where the condition $a m_1 m_2 - b n_1 n_2 = h$ is summed with smooth averaging on the variables $m_1, m_2, n_1, n_2, h$ and arbitrary weights in the average on $a,b$. Using Watt's work allows us to exploit all averages simultaneously. It turns out that averaging over $m_1, m_2, n_1, n_2, h$ right away in the quadratic divisor problem simplifies considerably the combinatorics of the main terms in the twisted fourth moment.

On the reciprocity law for the twisted second moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions

We investigate the reciprocity law, studied by Conrey~\cite{Con07} and Young~\cite{You11a}, for the second moment of Dirichlet L-functions twisted by $χ(a)$ modulo a prime $q$. We show that the error term in this reciprocity law can be extended to a continuous function of $a/q$ with respect to the real topology. Furthermore, we extend this reciprocity result, proving an exact formula involving also shifted moments. We also give an expression for the twisted second moment involving the coefficients of the continued fraction expansion of $a/q$, and, consequently, we improve upon a classical result of Selberg on the second moment of Dirichlet L-functions with two twists. Finally, we obtain a formula connecting the shifted second moment of the Dirichlet $L$-functions with the Estermann function. In particular cases, this result can be used to obtain some simple explicit exact formulae for the moments.

On the distribution of a cotangent sum

Maier and Rassias computed the moments and proved a distribution result for the cotangent sum $c_0(a/q):=-\sum_{m<q}\frac mq\cot(\frac{πma}{q})$ on average over $1/2<A_0\leq a/q<A_1<1$, as $q\rightarrow \infty$. We give a simple argument that recovers their results (with stronger error terms) and extends them to the full range $1\leq a<q$. Moreover, we give a density result for $c_0$ and answer a question posed by Maier and Rassias on the growth of the moments of $c_0$.

The mean square of the product of $ζ(s)$ with Dirichlet polynomials

Improving earlier work of Balasubramanian, Conrey and Heath-Brown, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the mean-square of the Riemann zeta-function times an arbitrary Dirichlet polynomial of length $T^{1/2 + δ}$, with $δ= 0.01515....$ As an application we obtain an upper bound of the correct order of magnitude for the third moment of the Riemann zeta-function. We also refine previous work of Deshouillers and Iwaniec, obtaining asymptotic estimates in place of bounds. Using the work of Watt, we compute the mean-square of the Riemann zeta-function times a Dirichlet polynomial of length going up to $T^{3/4}$ provided that the Dirichlet polynomial assumes a special shape. Finally, we exhibit a conjectural estimate for trilinear sums of Kloosterman fractions which implies the Lindelof Hypothesis.

Period functions and cotangent sums

We investigate the period function of $\sum_{n=1}^\inftyσ_a(n)\e{nz}$, showing it can be analytically continued to $|\arg z|<π$ and studying its Taylor series. We use these results to give a simple proof of the Voronoi formula and to prove an exact formula for the second moments of the Riemann zeta function. Moreover, we introduce a family of cotangent sums, functions defined over the rationals, that generalize the Dedekind sum and share with it the property of satisfying a reciprocity formula. In particular, we find a reciprocity formula for the Vasyunin sum.

A Recursion Formula for Moments of Derivatives of Random Matrix Polynomials

We give asymptotic formulae for random matrix averages of derivatives of characteristic polynomials over the groups USp(2N), SO(2N) and O^-(2N). These averages are used to predict the asymptotic formulae for moments of derivatives of L-functions which arise in number theory. Each formula gives the leading constant of the asymptotic in terms of determinants of hypergeometric functions. We find a differential recurrence relation between these determinants which allows the rapid computation of the (k+1)-st constant in terms of the k-th and (k-1)-st. This recurrence is reminiscent of a Toda lattice equation arising in the theory of τ-functions associated with Painlevé differential equations.
