Averages of long Dirichlet polynomials

We consider the asymptotic behavior of the mean square of truncations of the Dirichlet series of $ζ(s)^k$. We discuss the connections of this problem with that of the variance of the divisor function in short intervals and in arithmetic progressions, reviewing the recent results on this topic. Finally, we show how these results can all be proved assuming a suitable version of the moments conjecture.

The highest lowest zero of general L-functions

Stephen D. Miller showed that, assuming the generalized Riemann Hypothesis, every entire $L$-function of real archimedian type has a zero in the interval $\frac12+i t$ with $-t_0 < t < t_0$, where $t_0\approx 14.13$ corresponds to the first zero of the Riemann zeta function. We give an example of a self-dual degree-4 $L$-function whose first positive imaginary zero is at $t_1\approx 14.496$. In particular, Miller's result does not hold for general $L$-functions. We show that all $L$-functions satisfying some additional (conjecturally true) conditions have a zero in the interval $(-t_2,t_2)$ with $t_2\approx 22.661$.

Factoring Hecke polynomials modulo a prime

Let T^{N,chi}_{p,k}(x) be the characteristic polynomial of the Hecke operator T_p acting on the space of cusp forms S_k(N,chi). We describe the factorization of T^{N,chi}_{p,k}(x) mod l as k varies, and we explicitly calculate those factorizations for N=1 and small l. These factorizations are used to deduce the irreducibility of certain T^{1,1}_{q,k}(x) from the irreducibility of T^{1,1}_{2,k}(x).

An extension of Hecke's converse theorem

Associated to a newform $f(z)$ is a Dirichlet series $L_f(s)$ with functional equation and Euler product. Hecke showed that if the Dirichlet series $F(s)$ has a functional equation of the appropriate form, then $F(s)=L_f(s)$ for some holomorphic newform $f(z)$ on $Γ(1)$. Weil extended this result to $Γ_0(N)$ under an assumption on the twists of $F(s)$ by Dirichlet characters. We show that, at least for small $N$, the assumption on twists can be replaced by an assumption on the local factors of the Euler product of $F(s)$.
