Robust portfolio optimization using pseudodistances

The presence of outliers in financial asset returns is a frequently occuring phenomenon and may lead to unreliable mean-variance optimized portfolios. This fact is due to the unbounded influence that outliers can have on the mean returns and covariance estimators that are inputs in the optimization procedure. In the present paper we consider new robust estimators of location and covariance obtained by minimizing an empirical version of a pseudodistance between the assumed model and the true model underlying the data. We prove statistical properties of the new mean and covariance matrix estimators, such as affine equivariance, B-robustness and efficiency. These estimators can be easily used in place of the classical estimators, thereby providing robust optimized portfolios. A Monte Carlo simulation study and an application to real data show the advantages of the proposed approach.

Upper bounds for the error in some interpolation and extrapolation designs

This paper deals with probabilistic upper bounds for the error in functional estimation defined on some interpolation and extrapolation designs, when the function to estimate is supposed to be analytic. The error pertaining to the estimate may depend on various factors: the frequency of observations on the knots, the position and number of the knots, and also on the error committed when approximating the function through its Taylor expansion. When the number of observations is fixed, then all these parameters are determined by the choice of the design and by the choice estimator of the unknown function. The scope of the paper is therefore to determine a rule for the minimal number of observation required to achieve an upper bound of the error on the estimate with a given maximal probability.

A longest run test for heteroscedasticity in univariate regression model

The scope of this paper is the presentation of a test that enables to detect heteroscedasticity in univariate regression model. The test is simple to compute and very general since no hypothesis is made on the regularity of the response function or on the normality of errors. Simulations show that our test fairs well with respect to other less general nonparametric tests.

A Simple Lack-of-Fit Test for Regression Models

A simple test is proposed for examining the correctness of a given completely specified response function against unspecified general alternatives in the context of univariate regression. The usual diagnostic tools based on residuals plots are useful but heuristic. We introduce a formal statistical test supplementing the graphical analysis. Technically, the test statistic is the maximum length of the sequences of ordered (with respect to the covariate) observations that are consecutively overestimated or underestimated by the candidate regression function. Note that the testing procedure can cope with heteroscedastic errors and no replicates. Recursive formulae allowing to calculate the exact distribution of the test statistic under the null hypothesis and under a class of alternative hypotheses are given.
