Proof of the geometric Langlands conjecture V: the multiplicity one theorem

This is the final paper in the series of five, in which we prove the geometric Langlands conjecture (GLC). We conclude the proof of GLC by showing that there exists a unique (up to tensoring up by a vector space) Hecke eigensheaf corresponding to an irreducible local system (hence, the title of the paper). We achieve this by analyzing the geometry of the stack of local systems.

Non-vanishing of geometric Whittaker coefficients for reductive groups

We prove that cuspidal automorphic D-modules have non-vanishing Whittaker coefficients, generalizing known results in the geometric Langlands program from GL_n to general reductive groups. The key tool is a microlocal interpretation of Whittaker coefficients. We establish various exactness properties in the geometric Langlands context that may be of independent interest. Specifically, we show Hecke functors are t-exact on the category of tempered D-modules, strengthening a classical result of Gaitsgory (with different hypotheses) for GL_n. We also show that Whittaker coefficient functors are t-exact for sheaves with nilpotent singular support. An additional consequence of our results is that the tempered, restricted geometric Langlands conjecture must be t-exact. We apply our results to show that for suitably irreducible local systems, Whittaker-normailzed Hecke eigensheaves are perverse sheaves that are irreducible on each connected component of Bun_G.

Homological methods in semi-infinite contexts

Actions of algebraic groups on DG categories provide a convenient, unifying framework in some parts of geometric representation theory, especially the representation theory of reductive Lie algebras. We extend this theory to loop groups and affine Lie algebras, extending previous work of Beraldo, Gaitsgory and the author. Along the way, we introduce some subjects of independent interest: ind-coherent sheaves of infinite type indschemes, topological DG algebras, and weak actions of group indschemes on categories. We also present a new construction of semi-infinite cohomology for affine Lie algebras, based on a modular character for loop groups. As an application of our methods, we establish an important technical result for Kac-Moody representations at the critical level, showing that the appropriate ("renormalized") derived category of representations admits a large class of symmetries coming from the adjoint action of the loop group and from the center of the enveloping algebra.

W-algebras and Whittaker categories

Affine W-algebras are a somewhat complicated family of (topological) associative algebras associated with a semisimple Lie algebra, quantizing functions on the algebraic loop space of Kostant's slice. They have attracted a great deal of attention in geometric representation theory because of Feigin-Frenkel's duality theorem for them, which identifies W-algebras for a Lie algebra and its Langlands dual through a subtle construction. The main result of this paper is an affine version of Skryabin's theorem, describing the category of modules over the W-algebra in simpler categorical terms. But unlike the classical story, it is essential to work with derived categories in the affine setting. One novel feature is the use of geometric techniques to study W-algebras: the theory of D-modules on the loop group and the geometry of the affine Grassmannian are indispensable tools. These are used to give an infinite family of affine analogues of the Bezrukavnikov-Braverman-Mirkovic theorem, providing a geometric version of Rodier's compact approximation to the Whittaker model from the arithmetic setting. We also use these methods to generalize Beraldo's theorem identifying Whittaker invariants and Whittaker coinvariants, extending his result from GL_n to a general reductive group. At integral level, these methods seem to have deep intrinsic meaning in the local geometric Langlands program. The theory developed here provides systematic proofs of many classical results in the subject. In particular, we clarify the exactness properties of the quantum Drinfeld-Sokolov functor.

On the notion of spectral decomposition in local geometric Langlands

The geometric Langlands program is distinguished in assigning spectral decompositions to all representations, not only the irreducible ones. However, it is not even clear what is meant by a spectral decomposition when one works with non-abelian reductive groups and with ramification. The present work is meant to clarify the situation, showing that the two obvious candidates for such a notion coincide. More broadly, we study the moduli space of (possibly irregular) de Rham local systems from the perspective of homological algebra. We show that, in spite of its infinite-dimensional nature, this moduli space shares many of the nice features of an Artin stack. Less broadly, these results support the belief in the existence of a version of geometric Langlands allowing arbitrary ramification. Along the way, we give some apparently new, if unsurprising, results about the algebraic geometry of the moduli space of connections, using Babbitt-Varadarajan's reduction theory for differential equations.

A Geometric Proof of the Feigin-Frenkel Theorem

We reprove the theorem of Feigin and Frenkel relating the center of the critical level enveloping algebra of the Kac-Moody algebra for a semisimple Lie algebra to opers (which are certain de Rham local systems with extra structure) for the Langlands dual group. Our proof incorporates a construction of Beilinson and Drinfeld relating the Feigin-Frenkel isomorphism to (more classical) Langlands duality through the geometric Satake theorem.
