Counting rationals and diophantine approximation in missing-digit Cantor sets

We establish a new upper bound for the number of rationals up to a given height in a missing-digit set, making progress towards a conjecture of Broderick, Fishman, and Reich. This enables us to make novel progress towards another conjecture of those authors about the corresponding intrinsic diophantine approximation problem. Moreover, we make further progress towards conjectures of Bugeaud--Durand and Levesley--Salp--Velani on the distribution of diophantine exponents in missing-digit sets. A key tool in our study is Fourier $\ell^1$ dimension introduced by the last named author in [H. Yu, Rational points near self-similar sets, arXiv:2101.05910]. An important technical contribution of the paper is a method to compute this quantity.

Generalised Fermat equations in dense variables over finite fields and rings

Let $A$ be a sufficiently dense subset of a finite field $\mathbb F_q$ or a finite, cyclic ring $\mathbb Z/ N\mathbb Z$. Assuming that $q$ and $N$ have no small prime divisors, we show that generalised Fermat equations have the expected number of solutions over $A$. We further show that our density threshold is optimal. Our proofs involve average Fourier decay for Bohr sets, mixed character sum bounds, equidistribution of polynomial sequences, popular Cauchy--Davenport lemmas, and a regularity-type lemma due to Semchankau.

A note on dyadic approximation in Cantor's set

We consider the convergence theory for dyadic approximation in the middle-third Cantor set, $K$, for approximation functions of the form $ψ_τ(n) = n^{-τ}$ ($τ\ge 0$). In particular, we show that for values of $τ$ beyond a certain threshold we have that almost no point in $K$ is dyadically $ψ_τ$-well approximable with respect to the natural probability measure on $K$. This refines a previous result in this direction obtained by the first, third, and fourth named authors (arXiv, 2020).

Counting multiplicative approximations

A famous conjecture of Littlewood (c. 1930) concerns approximating two real numbers by rationals of the same denominator, multiplying the errors. In a lesser-known paper, Wang and Yu (1981) established an asymptotic formula for the number of such approximations, valid almost always. Using the quantitative Koukoulopoulos--Maynard theorem of Aistleitner--Borda--Hauke, together with bounds arising from the theory of Bohr sets, we deduce lower bounds of the expected order of magnitude for inhomogeneous and fibre refinements of the problem.

Dyadic Approximation in the Middle-Third Cantor Set

In this paper, we study the metric theory of dyadic approximation in the middle-third Cantor set. This theory complements earlier work of Levesley, Salp, and Velani (2007), who investigated the problem of approximation in the Cantor set by triadic rationals. We find that the behaviour when we consider dyadic approximation in the Cantor set is substantially different to considering triadic approximation in the Cantor set. In some sense, this difference in behaviour is a manifestation of Furstenberg's times 2 times 3 phenomenon from dynamical systems, which asserts that the base 2 and base 3 expansions of a number are not both structured.

Enumerative Galois theory for cubics and quartics

We show that there are $O_\varepsilon(H^{1.5+\varepsilon})$ monic, cubic polynomials with integer coefficients bounded by $H$ in absolute value whose Galois group is $A_3$. We also show that the order of magnitude for $D_4$ quartics is $H^2 (\log H)^2$, and that the respective counts for $A_4$, $V_4$, $C_4$ are $O(H^{2.91})$, $O(H^2 \log H)$, $O(H^2 \log H)$. Our work establishes that irreducible non-$S_3$ cubic polynomials are less numerous than reducible ones, and similarly in the quartic setting: these are the first two solved cases of a 1936 conjecture made by van der Waerden.

Equidistribution of values of linear forms on a cubic hypersurface

Let $C$ be a cubic form with rational coefficients in $n$ variables, and let $h$ be the $h$-invariant of $C$. Let $L_1, \ldots, L_r$ be linear forms with real coefficients such that if $\boldsymbolα \in \mathbb{R}^r \setminus \{ \boldsymbol{0} \}$ then $\boldsymbolα \cdot \mathbf{L}$ is not a rational form. Assume that $h > 16 + 8 r$. Let $\boldsymbolτ \in \mathbb{R}^r$, and let $η$ be a positive real number. We prove an asymptotic formula for the weighted number of integer solutions $\mathbf{x} \in [-P,P]^n$ to the system $C(\mathbf{x}) = 0, \: |\mathbf{L}(\mathbf{x}) - \boldsymbolτ| < η$. If the coefficients of the linear forms are algebraically independent over the rationals, then we may replace the $h$-invariant condition with the hypothesis $n > 16 + 9 r$, and show that the system has an integer solution. Finally, we show that the values of $\mathbf{L}$ at integer zeros of $C$ are equidistributed modulo one in $\mathbb{R}^r$, requiring only that $h > 16$.

Sums of cubes with shifts

Let $μ_1, \ldots, μ_s$ be real numbers, with $μ_1$ irrational. We investigate sums of shifted cubes $F(x_1,\ldots,x_s) = (x_1 - μ_1)^3 + \ldots + (x_s - μ_s)^3$. We show that if $η$ is real, $τ>0$ is sufficiently large, and $s \ge 9$, then there exist integers $x_1 > μ_1, \ldots, x_s > μ_s$ such that $|F(\mathbf{x})- τ| < η$. This is a real analogue to Waring's problem. We then prove a full density result of the same flavour for $s \ge 5$. For $s \ge 11$, we provide an asymptotic formula. If $s \ge 6$ then $F(\mathbf{Z}^s)$ is dense on the reals. Given nine variables, we can generalise this to sums of univariate cubic polynomials.

Waring's problem with shifts

Let $μ_1, \ldots, μ_s$ be real numbers, with $μ_1$ irrational. We investigate sums of shifted $k$th powers $\mathfrak{F}(x_1, \ldots, x_s) = (x_1 - μ_1)^k + \ldots + (x_s - μ_s)^k$. For $k \ge 4$, we bound the number of variables needed to ensure that if $η$ is real and $τ> 0$ is sufficiently large then there exist integers $x_1 > μ_1, \ldots, x_s > μ_s$ such that $|\mathfrak{F}(\mathbf{x}) - τ| < η$. This is a real analogue to Waring's problem. When $s \ge 2k^2-2k+3$, we provide an asymptotic formula. We prove similar results for sums of general univariate degree $k$ polynomials.

Distinguishing eigenforms modulo a prime ideal

Consider the Fourier expansions of two elements of a given space of modular forms. How many leading coefficients must agree in order to guarantee that the two expansions are the same? Sturm gave an upper bound for modular forms of a given weight and level. This was adapted by Ram Murty, Kohnen and Ghitza to the case of two eigenforms of the same level but having potentially different weights. We consider their expansions modulo a prime ideal, presenting a new bound. In the process of analysing this bound, we generalise a result of Bach and Sorenson, who provide a practical upper bound for the least prime in an arithmetic progression.
