Analysis of 2+1 diffusive-dispersive PDE arising in river braiding

We present local existence and uniqueness results for the following $2+1$ dispersive diffusive equation due to P. Hall arising in modeling of river braiding: $$u_{yyt} - γu_{xxx} -αu_{yyyy} - βu_{yy} + \left (u^2 \right)_{xyy} = 0$$ for $(x,y) \in [0, 2π] \times [0, π]$, $t> 0$, with boundary condition $u_{y}=0=u_{yyy}$ at $y=0$ and $y=π$ and $2π$ periodicity in $x$, using a contraction mapping argument in a Bourgain-type space $T_{s,b}$. We also show that the energy $\| u \|^2_{L^2} $ and cumulative dissipation $\int_0^t \| u_y \|_{L^2}^2 dt$ are globally controlled in time.

Analytical Approximation for 2-D Nonlinear Periodic Deep Water Waves

A recently developed method has been extended to a nonlocal equation arising in steady water wave propagation in two dimensions. We obtain analyic approximation of steady water wave solution in two dimensions with rigorous error bounds for a set of parameter values that correspond to heights slightly smaller than the critical. The wave shapes are shown to be analytic. The method presented in quite general and does not assume smallness of wave height or steepness and can be readily extended to other interfacial problems involving Laplace's equation.

Existence, Uniqueness, Analyticity, and Borel Summability for Boussinesq Equations

Through Borel summation methods, we analyze the Boussinesq equations for coupled fluid velocity and temperature fields. We prove that an equivalent system of integral equations in the Borel variable p dual to 1/t has a unique solution in a class of exponentially bounded functions, implying the existence of a classical solution to the Boussinesq equations in a complex t-region that includes a real positive time axis segment. For analytic initial data and forcing, it is shown that the solution is Borel summable, implying that that formal series in powers of t is Gevrey-1 asymptotic, and within the time interval of existence, the solution remains analytic with the same analyticity strip width as the initial data and forcing. We also determine conditions on the integral equation solution that improve the estimate for existence time.

The lifetime of shape oscillations of a bubble in an unbounded, inviscid and compressible fluid with surface tension

General perturbations of a spherical gas bubble in a compressible and inviscid fluid with surface tension were proved in Shapiro and Weinstein (2011), in the linearized approximation, to decay exponentially, $\sim e^{-Γt}, Γ>0$, as time advances. Formal asymptotic and numerical evidence led to the conjecture that $Γ\approx \frac{A}ε \frac{We}{ε^{2}} \exp(-B \frac{We}{ε^2})$, where $0<ε\ll1$ is the Mach number, We is the Weber number, and $A$ and $B$ are positive constants. In this paper, we prove this conjecture and calculate $A$ and $B$ to leading order in $ε$.

Existence, Uniqueness, Analyticity, and Borel Summability of Boussinesq and Magnetic Benard Equations

Through Borel summation methods, we analyze two different variations of the Navier-Stokes equation --the Boussinesq equation and the magnetic Benard equation. This method has previously been applied to the Navier-Stokes equation. We prove that an equivalent system of integral equations in each case has a unique solution, which is exponentially bounded for p in R^{+}, p being the Laplace dual variable of 1/t. This implies the local existence of a classical solution in a complex t-region that includes a real positive time (t)-axis segment. In this formalism, global existence of PDE solutions becomes a problem of asymptotics in the dual variable. Further, it is shown that within the time interval of existence, for analytic initial data and forcing, the solution remains analytic and has the same analyticity strip width. Under these conditions, the solution is Borel summable, implying that the formal series in time is Gevrey-1 asymptotic for small t.

Semiclassical low energy scattering for one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with exponentially decaying potentials

We consider semiclassical Schrödinger operators on the real line of the form $$H(\hbar)=-\hbar^2 \frac{d^2}{dx^2}+V(\cdot;\hbar)$$ with $\hbar>0$ small. The potential $V$ is assumed to be smooth, positive and exponentially decaying towards infinity. We establish semiclassical global representations of Jost solutions $f_\pm(\cdot,E;\hbar)$ with error terms that are uniformly controlled for small $E$ and $\hbar$, and construct the scattering matrix as well as the semiclassical spectral measure associated to $H(\hbar)$. This is crucial in order to obtain decay bounds for the corresponding wave and Schrödinger flows. As an application we consider the wave equation on a Schwarzschild background for large angular momenta $\ell$ where the role of the small parameter $\hbar$ is played by $\ell^{-1}$. It follows from the results in this paper and \cite{DSS2}, that the decay bounds obtained in \cite{DSS1}, \cite{DS} for individual angular momenta $\ell$ can be summed to yield the sharp $t^{-3}$ decay for data without symmetry assumptions.

A moving boundary model motivated by electric breakdown: II. Initial value problem

An interfacial approximation of the streamer stage in the evolution of sparks and lightning can be formulated as a Laplacian growth model regularized by a 'kinetic undercooling' boundary condition. Using this model we study both the linearized and the full nonlinear evolution of small perturbations of a uniformly translating circle. Within the linear approximation analytical and numerical results show that perturbations are advected to the back of the circle, where they decay. An initially analytic interface stays analytic for all finite times, but singularities from outside the physical region approach the interface for $t\to\infty$, which results in some anomalous relaxation at the back of the circle. For the nonlinear evolution numerical results indicate that the circle is the asymptotic attractor for small perturbations, but larger perturbations may lead to branching. We also present results for more general initial shapes, which demonstrate that regularization by kinetic undercooling cannot guarantee smooth interfaces globally in time.
