Central limit theorem for bifurcating Markov chains: the mother-daughters triangles case

The main objective of this article is to establish a central limit theorem for additive three-variable functionals of bifurcating Markov chains. We thus extend the central limit theorem under point-wise ergodic conditions studied in Bitseki-Delmas (2022) and to a lesser extent, the results of Bitseki-Delmas (2022) on central limit theorem under $L^{2}$ ergodic conditions. Our results also extend and complement those of Guyon (2007) and Delmas and Marsalle (2010). In particular, when the ergodic rate of convergence is greater than $1/\sqrt{2}$, we have, for certain class of functions, that the asymptotic variance is non-zero at a speed faster than the usual central limit theorem studied by Guyon and Delmas-Marsalle.

Central limit theorem for bifurcating Markov chains under point-wise ergodic conditions

Bifurcating Markov chains (BMC) are Markov chains indexed by a full binary tree representing the evolution of a trait along a population where each individual has two children. We provide a central limit theorem for general additive functionals of BMC, and prove the existence of three regimes. This corresponds to a competition between the reproducing rate (each individual has two children) and the ergodicity rate for the evolution of the trait. This is in contrast with the work of Guyon (2007), where the considered additive functionals are sums of martingale increments, and only one regime appears. Our result can be seen as a discrete time version, but with general trait evolution, of results in the time continuous setting of branching particle system from Adamczak and Miłoś (2015), where the evolution of the trait is given by an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.

Adaptive estimation for bifurcating Markov chains

In a first part, we prove Bernstein-type deviation inequalities for bifurcating Markov chains (BMC) under a geometric ergodicity assumption, completing former results of Guyon and Bitseki Penda, Djellout and Guillin. These preliminary results are the key ingredient to implement nonparametric wavelet thresholding estimation procedures: in a second part, we construct nonparametric estimators of the transition density of a BMC, of its mean transition density and of the corresponding invariant density, and show smoothness adaptation over various multivariate Besov classes under $L^p$-loss error, for $1 \leq p < \infty$. We prove that our estimators are (nearly) optimal in a minimax sense. As an application, we obtain new results for the estimation of the splitting size-dependent rate of growth-fragmentation models and we extend the statistical study of bifurcating autoregressive processes.

Moderate deviations for the Durbin-Watson statistic related to the first-order autoregressive process

The purpose of this paper is to investigate moderate deviations for the Durbin-Watson statistic associated with the stable first-order autoregressive process where the driven noise is also given by a first-order autoregressive process. We first establish a moderate deviation principle for both the least squares estimator of the unknown parameter of the autoregressive process as well as for the serial correlation estimator associated with the driven noise. It enables us to provide a moderate deviation principle for the Durbin-Watson statistic in the easy case where the driven noise is normally distributed and in the more general case where the driven noise satisfies a less restrictive Chen-Ledoux type condition.
