Giant electromagnetic proximity effect in superconductor/ferromagnet superlattices

We show that in superlattices with alternating superconducting (S) and ferromagnetic (F) layers the spontaneous magnetic field induced in the superconducting layers due to the electromagnetic proximity effect becomes dramatically enhanced compared to the previously studied S/F bilayers. The effect reveals itself for the in-plane orientation of the magnetic moments both for ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic ordering of the moments in the F layers. In the finite size samples the magnetic field decays from the sample surface towards the bulk of the structure, and the decay length strongly depends on the relative orientation of the sample surface, the layers planes and magnetic moments in the F layers. The obtained results provide additional insights into experimental data on the neutron scattering in Nb/Gd superlattices.

Optical Manipulation of Single Flux Quanta

Magnetic field can penetrate into type-II superconductors in the form of Abrikosov vortices, which are magnetic flux tubes surrounded by circulating supercurrents often trapped at defects referred to as pinning sites. Although the average properties of the vortex matter can be tuned with magnetic fields, temperature or electric currents, handling of individual vortices remains challenging and has been demonstrated only with sophisticated magnetic force, superconducting quantum interference device or strain-induced scanning local probe microscopies. Here, we introduce a far-field optical method based on local heating of the superconductor with a focused laser beam to realize a fast, precise and non-invasive manipulation of individual Abrikosov vortices, in the same way as with optical tweezers. This simple approach provides the perfect basis for sculpting the magnetic flux profile in superconducting devices like a vortex lens or a vortex cleaner, without resorting to static pinning or ratchet effects. Since a single vortex can induce a Josephson phase shift, our method also paves the way to fast optical drive of Josephson junctions, with potential massive parallelization of operations.

Double path interference and magnetic oscillations in Cooper pair transport through a single nanowire

We show that the critical current of the Josephson junction consisting of superconducting electrodes coupled through a nanowire with two conductive channels can reveal the multi-periodic magnetic oscillations. The multi-periodicity originates from the quantum mechanical interference between the channels affected by both the strong spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman interaction. This minimal two-channel model is shown to explain the complicated interference phenomena observed recently in Josephson transport through Bi nanowires.

Standard, inverse and triplet spin-valve effects in F1/S/F2 systems

We demonstrate that contrary to the common belief the critical temperature Tc of clean F1/S/F2 spin valves can depend non-monotonically on the angle between the magnetic moments of the ferromagnetic F1 and F2 layers. Depending on the system parameters the minimum of Tc may correspond to parallel, antiparallel or non-collinear mutual orientation of magnetic moments. Such anomalous behavior can reveal itself only provided the ferromagnetic layers differ from each other and it completely disappears in the dirty limit.

Anisotropy and effective dimensionality crossover of the fluctuation conductivity of hybrid superconductor/ferromagnet structures

We study the fluctuation conductivity of a superconducting film, which is placed to perpendicular non-uniform magnetic field with the amplitude $H_0$ induced by the ferromagnet with domain structure. The conductivity tensor is shown to be essentially anisotropic. The magnitude of this anisotropy is governed by the temperature and the typical width of magnetic domains $d$. For $d\ll L_{H_0}=\sqrt{Φ_0/H_0}$ the difference between diagonal fluctuation conductivity components $Δσ_\parallel$ along the domain walls and $Δσ_\perp$ across them has the order of $(d/L_{H_0})^4$. In the opposite case for $d\gg L_{H_0}$ the fluctuation conductivity tensor reveals effective dimensionality crossover from standard two-dimensional $(T-T_c)^{-1}$ behavior well above the critical temperature $T_c$ to the one-dimensional $(T-T_c)^{-3/2}$ one close to $T_c$ for $Δσ_\parallel$ or to the $(T-T_c)^{-1/2}$ dependence for $Δσ_\perp$. In the intermediate case $d\approx L_{H_0}$ for a fixed temperature shift from $T_c$ the dependence $Δσ_\parallel(H_0)$ is shown to have a minimum at $H_0\simΦ_0/d^2$ while $Δσ_\perp(H_0)$ is a monotonically increasing function.

Penetration of the magnetic field into the twinning plane in the type I and II superconductors

It is demonstrated that in the type I and II superconductors with low-transparent twinning planes (TP) the penetration of external parallel magnetic field into the region of the twinning plane can be energetically favorable. In the type I superconductors the twinning planes become similar to Josephson junctions and the magnetic field penetrates into the center of the TP in the form of soft Josephson-like vortices. This leads to increase in the critical magnetic field values. The corresponding phase diagram in the parameter plane "temperature - magnetic field" essentially differs from the one obtained without taking the finite value of the magnetic field near the TP into account. Comparison between obtained phase diagrams and experimental data for different type I superconductors can allow to estimate the value of the TP transparency, which is the only fitting parameter in our theory.

Sedeonic theory of massless fields

In present paper we develop the description of massless fields on the basis of space-time algebra of sixteen-component sedeons. The generalized sedeonic second-order equation for unified gravitoelectromagnetic (GE) field describing simultaneously gravity and electromagnetism is proposed. The second-order relations for the GE field energy, momentum and Lorentz invariants are derived. We consider also the generalized sedeonic first-order equation for the massless neutrino field. The second-order relations for the neutrino potentials analogues to the Pointing theorem and Lorentz invariant relations in gravitoelectromagnetism are also derived.

Dephasing time and magnetoresistance of two-dimensional electron gas in spatially modulated magnetic fields

The effect of a spatially modulated magnetic field on the weak localization phenomenon in two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is studied. Both the dephasing time $τ_H$ and magnetoresistance are shown to reveal a nontrivial behavior as functions of the characteristics of magnetic field profiles. The magnetic field profiles with rather small spatial scales $d$ and modulation amplitudes $H_0$ such that $H_0d^2\ll\hbar c/e$ are characterized by the dephasing rate $τ_H^{-1}\propto H_0^2d^2$. The increase in the flux value $H_0d^2$ results in a crossover to a standard linear dependence $τ_H^{-1}\propto H_0$. Applying an external homogeneous magnetic field $H$ one can vary the local dephasing time in the system and affect the resulting average transport characteristics. We have investigated the dependence of the average resistance vs the field $H$ for some generic systems and predict a possibility to observe a positive magnetoresistance at not too large $H$ values. The resulting dependence of the resistance vs $H$ should reveal a peak at the field values $H\sim H_0$.

Octonic relativistic quantum mechanics

In this paper we represent the generalization of relativistic quantum mechanics on the base of eght-component values "octons", generating associative noncommutative spatial algebra. It is shown that the octonic second-order equation for the eight-component octonic wave function, obtained from the Einshtein relation for energy and momentum, describes particles with spin of 1/2. It is established that the octonic wave function of a particle in the state with defined spin projection has the specific spatial structure in the form of octonic oscillator with two spatial polarizations: longitudinal linear and transversal circular. The relations between bispinor and octonic descriptions of relativistic particles are established. We propose the eight-component spinors, which are octonic generalisation of two-component Pauli spinors and four-component Dirac bispinors. It is shown that proposed eight-component spinors separate the states with different spin projection, different particle-antiparticle state as well as different polarization of the octonic oscillator. We demonstrate that in the frames of octonic relativistic quantum mechanics the second-order equation for octonic wave function can be reformulated in the form of the system of first-order equations for quantum fields, which is analogous to the system of Maxwell equations for the electromagnetic field. It is established that for the special type of wave functions the second-order equation can be reduced to the single first-order equation, which is analogous to the Dirac equation. At the same time it is shown that this first-order equation describes particles, which do not create quantum fields.
