Effect of thin film on the generation of vorticity by surface waves

Recently a theoretical scheme explaining the vorticity generation by surface waves in liquids was developed [S. Filatov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 054501 (2016)]. Here we study how a thin (monomolecular) film presented at the surface of liquid affects the generated vorticity. We demonstrate that the vorticity becomes parametrically larger than for the case with a clean surface and now it depends on viscosity of the liquid. We also discuss the motion of particles passively advected by the generated surface flow. The results can be used in different applications: from the analysis of pollutants' diffusion on the ocean surface till the reconstruction of vorticity based on the particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements.

Nonlinear generation of vorticity in thin smectic films

We analyze a solenoidal motion in a vertically vibrated freely suspended thin smectic film. We demonstrate analytically that transverse oscillations of the film generate two-dimensional vortices in the plane of the film owing to hydrodynamic nonlinearity. An explicit expression for the vorticity of the in-plane film motion in terms of the film displacement is obtained. The air around the film is proven to play a crucial role, since it changes the dispersion relation of transverse oscillations and transmits viscous stresses to the film, modifying its bending motion. We propose possible experimental observations enabling to check our predictions.

Conditional probability calculations for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with additive noise

The method for computation of conditional probability density function for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with additive noise is developed. We present in a constructive form the conditional probability density function in the limit of a small noise and analytically derive it in a weakly nonlinear case. The general theory results are illustrated using fibre-optic communications as a particular, albeit practically very important, example.

Adjustable subwavelength localization in a hybrid plasmonic waveguide

The hybrid plasmonic waveguide consists of a high-permittivity dielectric nanofiber embedded in a low-permittivity dielectric near a metal surface. This architecture is considered as one of the most perspective candidates for long-range subwavelength guiding. We present qualitative analysis and numerical results which reveal advantages of the special waveguide design when dielectric constant of the cylinder is greater than the absolute value of the dielectric constant of the metal. In this case the arbitrary subwavelength mode size can be achieved by controlling the gap width. Our qualitative analysis is based on consideration of sandwich-like conductor-gap-dielectric system. The numerical solution is obtained by expansion of the hybrid plasmonic mode over single cylinder modes and the surface plasmon-polariton modes of the metal screen and matching the boundary conditions.

Limitations on the number of plasmons in nanoparticles

In this letter, we address the thermal processes occurring in plasmonic nanoparticles. We determine constrains imposed upon the plasmonic excitation in such nanoparticle by the resulting heat generation. Taking into account temperature dependence of the metal losses, we predict the existence of the critical number of plasmons in the nanoparticle. We also allow for the temperature dependencies of the thermal-conductivity coefficient of the environment and the Kapitza heat boundary resistance. We show that the latter can dominate the overall heat resistance in the system. Strength limitations caused by the action of electric forces are also considered. Obtained results provide instruments for the heat and strength management in the plasmonic engineering.

Dynamics of wrinkles on a vesicle in external flow

Recent experiments by Kantsler et. al. (2007) have shown that the relaxational dynamics of a vesicle in external elongation flow is accompanied by the formation of wrinkles on a membrane. Motivated by these experiments we present a theory describing the dynamics of a wrinkled membrane. Formation of wrinkles is related to the dynamical instability induced by negative surface tension of the membrane. For quasi-spherical vesicles we perform analytical study of the wrinkle structure dynamics. We derive the expression for the instability threshold and identify three stages of the dynamics. The scaling laws for the temporal evolution of wrinkling wavelength and surface tension are established and confirmed numerically.
