Spin vs. position conjugation in quantum simulations with atoms: application to quantum chemistry

The permutation symmetry is a fundamental attribute of the collective wavefunction of indistinguishable particles. It makes a difference for the behavior of collective systems having different quantum statistics but existing in the same environment. Here we show that for some specific quantum conjugation between the spin and spatial degrees of freedom the indistinguishable particles can behave similarly for either quantum statistics. In particular, a mesoscopically scaled collection of atomic qubits, mediated by optical tweezers, can model the behavior of a valent electronic shell compounded with nuclear centers in molecules. This makes possible quantum simulations of mono and divalent bonds in quantum chemistry by manipulation of up to four bosonic atoms confined with optical microtraps.

Universal low-depth two-unitary design of programmable photonic circuits

The development of large-scale, programmable photonic circuits capable of performing generic matrix-vector multiplication is essential for both classical and quantum information processing. However, this goal is hindered by high losses, hardware errors, and difficulties in programmability. We propose an enhanced architecture for programmable photonic circuits that minimizes circuit depth and offers analytical programmability, properties that have not been simultaneously achieved in previous circuit designs. Our proposal exploits a previously overlooked representation of general nonunitary matrices as sums of two unitaries. Furthermore, similar to the traditional singular value decomposition-based circuits, the circuits in our unitary-sum-based architecture inherit the advantages of the constituent unitary circuits. Overall, our proposal provides a significantly improved solution for matrix-vector multiplication compared to the established approaches.

Coupled dynamics of spin qubits in optical dipole microtraps

Single atoms in dipole microtraps or optical tweezers have recently become a promising platform for quantum computing and simulation. Here we report a detailed theoretical analysis of the physics underlying an implementation of a Rydberg two-qubit gate in such a system -- a cornerstone protocol in quantum computing with single atoms. We focus on a blockade-type entangling gate and consider various decoherence processes limiting its performance in a real system. We provide numerical estimates for the limits on fidelity of the maximally entangled states and predict the full process matrix corresponding to the noisy two-qubit gate. Our methods and results may find implementation in numerical models for simulation and optimization of neutral atom based quantum processors.

Experimental adaptive quantum state tomography based on rank-preserving transformations

Quantum tomography is a process of quantum state reconstruction using data from multiple measurements. An essential goal for a quantum tomography algorithm is to find measurements that will maximize the useful information about an unknown quantum state obtained through measurements. One of the recently proposed methods of quantum tomography is the algorithm based on rank-preserving transformations. The main idea is to transform a basic measurement set in a way to provide a situation that is equivalent to measuring the maximally mixed state. As long as tomography of a fully mixed state has the fastest convergence comparing to other states, this method is expected to be highly accurate. We present numerical and experimental comparisons of rank-preserving tomography with another adaptive method, which includes measurements in the estimator eigenbasis and with random-basis tomography. We also study ways to improve the efficiency of the rank-preserving transformations method using transformation unitary freedom and measurement set complementation.

Experimental Estimation of Quantum State Properties from Classical Shadows

Full quantum tomography of high-dimensional quantum systems is experimentally infeasible due to the exponential scaling of the number of required measurements on the number of qubits in the system. However, several ideas were proposed recently for predicting the limited number of features for these states, or estimating the expectation values of operators, without the need for full state reconstruction. These ideas go under the general name of shadow tomography. Here we provide an experimental demonstration of property estimation based on classical shadows proposed in [H.-Y. Huang, R. Kueng, J. Preskill. Nat. Phys. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41567-020-0932-7 (2020)] and study its performance in the quantum optical experiment with high-dimensional spatial states of photons. We show on experimental data how this procedure outperforms conventional state reconstruction in fidelity estimation from a limited number of measurements.

Improved Heralded Schemes to Generate Entangled States From Single Photons

We present a novel semi-analytical methodology to construct optimal linear optical circuits for heralded production of 3-photon GHZ and 2-photon Bell states. We provide a detailed description and analysis of the resulting optical schemes, which deliver success probabilities of 1/54 and 2/27 for dual-rail encoded 3-GHZ and Bell states generation, respectively. Our results improve the known constructive bounds on the success probabilities for 3-GHZ states and are of particular importance for a ballistic quantum computing model, for which these states provide an essential resource.

Objective Compressive Quantum Process Tomography

We present a compressive quantum process tomography scheme that fully characterizes any rank-deficient completely-positive process with no a priori information about the process apart from the dimension of the system on which the process acts. It uses randomly-chosen input states and adaptive output von Neumann measurements. Both entangled and tensor-product configurations are flexibly employable in our scheme, the latter which naturally makes it especially compatible with many-body quantum computing. Two main features of this scheme are the certification protocol that verifies whether the accumulated data uniquely characterize the quantum process, and a compressive reconstruction method for the output states. We emulate multipartite scenarios with high-order electromagnetic transverse modes and optical fibers to positively demonstrate that, in terms of measurement resources, our assumption-free compressive strategy can reconstruct quantum processes almost equally efficiently using all types of input states and basis measurement operations, operations, independent of whether or not they are factorizable into tensor-product states.

Projective filtering of a single spatial radiation eigenmode

Lossless filtering of a single coherent (Schmidt) mode from spatially multimode radiation is a problem crucial for optics in general and for quantum optics in particular. It becomes especially important in the case of nonclassical light that is fragile to optical losses. An example is bright squeezed vacuum generated via high-gain parametric down conversion or four-wave mixing. Its highly multiphoton and multimode structure offers a huge increase in the information capacity provided that each mode can be addressed separately. However, the nonclassical signature of bright squeezed vacuum, photon-number correlations, are highly susceptible to losses. Here we demonstrate lossless filtering of a single spatial Schmidt mode by projecting the spatial spectrum of bright squeezed vacuum on the eigenmode of a single-mode fiber. Moreover, we show that the first Schmidt mode can be captured by simply maximizing the fiber-coupled intensity. Importantly, the projection operation does not affect the targeted mode and leaves it usable for further applications.

Schmidt-like coherent mode decomposition and spatial intensity correlations of thermal light

We experimentally study the properties of coherent mode decomposition for intensity correlation function of quasi-thermal light. We use the technique of spatial mode selection developed for studying transverse entanglement of photon pairs, and show that it can be extended to characterize classical spatial correlations. Our results demonstrate the existence of a unique for a given thermal source basis of coherent modes, correlated in a way much resembling the Schmidt modes of spatially entangled photons.

Angular Schmidt Modes in Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion

We report a proof-of-principle experiment demonstrating that appropriately chosen set of Hermite-Gaussian modes constitutes a Schmidt decomposition for transverse momentum states of biphotons generated in the process of spontaneous parametric down conversion. We experimentally realize projective measurements in Schmidt basis and observe correlations between appropriate pairs of modes. We perform tomographical state reconstruction in the Schmidt basis, by direct measurement of single-photon density matrix eigenvalues.

On Teleportation in a System of Identical Particles

The teleportation of an unknown polarization state of one of the photons in a system of identical particles has been considered. It has been shown that spatial degrees of freedom, which are various directions of the momentum of three photons, are of significant importance for teleportation in the system of identical particles. The inclusion of the spatial degrees of freedom increases the dimension of single-particle state space. In view of this increase, a four-dimensional subspace of two-particle states, which is similar to the state space spanned by the Bell states in a system of two distinguishable qubits, can be separated in the experimental configuration.

Polarization ququarts

We discuss the concept of polarization states of four-dimensional quantum systems based on frequency non-degenerate biphoton field. Several quantum tomography protocols were developed and implemented for measurement of an arbitrary state of ququart. A simple method that does not rely on interferometric technique is used to generate and measure the sequence of states that can be used for quantum communication purposes.
