Towards a theory of bottom-up holographic models for linear Regge trajectories of light mesons

We advance in constructing a bottom-up holographic theory of linear meson Regge trajectories that generalizes and unites into one logical framework various bottom-up holographic approaches proposed in the past and scattered in the literature. The starting point of the theory is a quadratic in fields holographic five-dimensional action in which the Poincaré invariance along the holographic coordinate is violated in the most general way compatible with the linear Regge behavior of the discrete spectrum in four dimensions. It is further demonstrated how different Soft Wall (SW) like holographic models existing in the literature plus some new ones emerge from our general setup. Various interrelations between the emerging models are studied. These models include the known SW models with different sign in the exponential background, the SW models with certain generalized backgrounds, with modified metrics, and No Wall models with 5D mass depending on the holographic coordinate in a simple polynomial way. We argue that this dependence allows to describe the effects caused by the main non-local phenomena of strongly coupled 4D gauge theory, the confinement and chiral symmetry breaking, in terms of a local 5D dual field theory in the AdS space. We provide a detailed comparison of our approach with the Light Front holographic QCD, with the spectroscopic predictions of the dual Veneziano like amplitudes, and with the experimental Regge phenomenology. We apply our general approach to a holographic study of confinement, chiral symmetry breaking, and the pion form factor.

A holographic relation between the deconfinement temperature and gluon condensate

We derive a holographic prediction of the deconfinement temperature $T_c$ at vanishing chemical potential within a simplest AdS/QCD model with dynamical dilaton. Our analysis leads to a linear relation between $T_c^4$ and the gluon condensate. After normalizing this relation to the lattice data for $SU(3)$ pure gauge theory, the standard phenomenological value of gluon condensate from QCD sum rules leads to the prediction $T_c=156$ MeV which is in a perfect agreement with the modern lattice results and freeze-out temperature measured by the ALICE Collaboration.

Deconfinement temperature in AdS/QCD from the spectrum of scalar glueballs

We scrutinize various holographic estimations of the deconfinement temperature within the bottom-up AdS/QCD models. A special emphasis is put on the recent idea of isospectral potentials in the holographic approach. It is demonstrated that different models from an isospectral family (i.e., the models leading to identical predictions for the spectrum of hadrons with fixed quantum numbers) result in different predictions for the deconfinement temperature. This difference is found to be quite small in the scalar glueball channel but very large in the vector meson channel which is often used for fixing parameters of holographic models. The observed stability in the former case clearly favors the choice of the glueball channel for thermodynamic predictions in AdS/QCD models, with the scalar glueball trajectory being taken from lattice simulations and used as a basic input in improved versions of the Soft Wall holographic model.

On holographic relation between radial meson trajectories and deconfinement temperature

The interrelation between the deconfinement temperature of hadron medium and parameters of radial Regge trajectories within the bottom-up holographic models for QCD is scrutinized. We show that the lattice data on the deconfinement temperature can yield a powerful restriction on the spectrum of excited mesons and glueballs within the framework of holographic approach. The best phenomenological agreement and theoretical self-consistency are achieved if the scalar meson $f_0(1500)$ is considered as the lightest glueball.

Regge trajectories in light and heavy mesons: the pattern of appearances and possible dynamical explanations

I briefly review the Regge approach to the hadron spectrum and advocate a dynamical emergence of principal quantum number in the known spectrum of light non-strange mesons. Further it is shown how the linear radial trajectories with universal slope can be extended to heavy quarkonia and a qualitative string interpretation is given. After that I discuss a recently proposed non-string model leading to a natural appearance of linear Regge trajectories and explaining many mass relations.

Towards reconciling the holographic and lattice descriptions of radially excited hadrons

Within the framework of AdS/QCD models, the spectra of radially excited hadrons are identified with towers of Kaluza-Klein (KK) states in a putative dual theory. The infinite number of KK states is indispensable to provide correct high energy asymptotics of correlation functions in QCD. It is known, however, that the KK modes of dual theory must be qualitatively different from real hadrons. And what is more important, the radially excited states appear in lattice calculations not as "excitations" of some ground state, but rather as independent states coupled to higher dimensional QCD operators - the larger is a basis of interpolating operators, the larger set of states can be resolved. A question arises whether it is possible to reconcile the holographic and lattice descriptions of radially excited hadrons? We propose a new phenomenological "consistency test" for bottom-up holographic models: If the KK spectrum of massive 5D fields corresponding to higher dimensional operators in QCD coincides with the conventional radial KK spectrum, then the holographic KK states can be identified with real excited mesons in the large-Nc limit of QCD - as in the lattice QCD, they become a superposition of several states interpolated by operators of different canonical dimensions. We demonstrate that the Soft Wall holographic model passes this test while the Hard Wall model does not.

Linear radial Regge trajectories for mesons with any quark flavor

In the Regge phenomenology, the radial spectrum of light mesons is given by a linear relation $M_n^2=a(n+b)$, where $a$ is a universal slope, the dimensionless intercept $b$ depends on quantum numbers, and $n$ enumerates the excited states in radial recurrences. The usual extensions of this relation to heavy quarkonia in the framework of hadron string models typically lead to strong nonlinearities which seem to be at variance with the available experimental data. Introducing a radially static string picture of mesons, we put forward a linear generalization $(M_n-m_1-m_2)^2=a(n+b)$, where $m_{1,2}$ are quark masses. The vector channel contains enough experimental states to check this new relation and a good agreement is observed. It is shown that this generalization leads to a simple estimate of current quark masses from the radial spectra.

Lower and upper bounds on the mass of light quark-antiquark scalar resonance in the SVZ sum rules

The calculation of the mass of light scalar isosinglet meson within the Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov (SVZ) sum rules is revisited. We develop simple analytical methods for estimation of hadron masses in the SVZ approach and try to reveal the origin of their numerical values. The calculations of hadron parameters in the SVZ sum rules are known to be heavily based on a choice of the perturbative threshold. This choice requires some important ad hoc information. We show analytically that the scalar mass under consideration has a lower and upper bound which are independent of this choice: $0.78\lesssim m_s\lesssim1.28$ GeV.

Soft-wall modelling of meson spectra

The holographic methods inspired by the gauge/gravity correspondence from string theory have been actively applied to the hadron spectroscopy in the last eleven years. Within the phenomenological bottom-up approach, the linear Regge-like trajectories for light mesons are naturally reproduced in the so-called "Soft-wall" holographic models. I will give a very short review of the underlying ideas and technical aspects related to the meson spectroscopy. A generalization of soft-wall description of Regge trajectories to arbitrary intercept is proposed. The problem of incorporation of the chiral symmetry breaking is discussed.

The sigma meson from QCD sum rules for large-$N_c$ Regge spectra

The QCD sum rules in the large-$N_c$ limit for the light non-strange vector, axial and scalar mesons are considered assuming a string-like linear spectrum for the radially excited states. We propose a improved method for combined analysis of these channels that gives a reasonable description of the observed spectrum. In the vector-axial case, fixing the pion decay constant and the gluon condensate we obtain more or less physical values for the masses of ground states and the quark condensate. Thus a typical need for this method to fix the mass of some ground state is overcome. Using in the scalar channel the values of presumably universal slope of radial trajectories and the quark condensate obtained in the vector-axial channel, we find that, in contrast to some strong claims in the literature, a prediction of light scalar state with a mass close to the mass of $f_0(500)$ seems to be natural in the considered approach and may follow in a natural way from the Regge phenomenology.

Soft wall model for a holographic superconductor

We apply the soft wall holographic model from hadron physics to a description of the high-$T_c$ superconductivity. In comparison with the existing bottom-up holographic superconductors, the proposed approach is more phenomenological. On the other hand, it is much simpler and has more freedom for fitting the conductivity properties of the real high-$T_c$ materials. We demonstrate some examples of emerging models and discuss a possible origin of the approach.

The masses of vector mesons in holographic QCD at finite chiral chemical potential

Central heavy-ion collisions may induce sizeable fluctuations of the topological charge. This effect is expected to distort the dispersion relation for the hadron masses. We construct a general setup for a compact description of this phenomenon in the framework of bottom-up holographic approach to QCD. A couple of soft wall holographic models are proposed for the vector mesons. The states having different circular polarizations are shown to have different effective mass. The requirement of stability imposes strong constraints on the possible choice of models.

Holographic Estimates of the Deconfinement Temperature

The problem of self-consistent estimates of the deconfinement temperature Tc in the framework of the bottom-up holographic approach to QCD is scrutinized. It is shown that the standard soft wall model gives Tc for planar gluodynamics around 260 MeV in a good agreement with the lattice data. The extensions of soft wall model adjusted for descriptions of realistic meson spectra result in a broad range of predictions. This uncertainty is related with a poor experimental information on the radially excited mesons.

Note on universal description of heavy and light mesons

The experimental spectrum of excited S-wave vector mesons with hidden quark flavor reveals a remarkable property: For all flavors, it is approximately linear in mass squared, $m_n^2\approx a(n+b)$, $n$ is the radial quantum number. We draw attention to the fact that such a universal behavior for any quark mass cannot be obtained in a natural way within the usual semirelativistic potential and string-like models - if the Regge-like behavior is reproduced for the mesons made of the light quarks, the trajectories become essentially nonlinear for the heavy-quark sector. In reality, however, the linearity for the heavy mesons appears to be even better than for the light ones. In addition, the slope a is quite different for different quark flavors. This difference is difficult to understand within the QCD string approach since the slope measures the interaction strength among quarks. We propose a simple way for reparametrization of the vector spectrum in terms of quark masses and universal slope and intercept. Our model-independent analysis suggests that the quarks of any mass should be regarded as static sources inside mesons while the interaction between quarks is substantially relativistic.

The flavor universality of some mass splittings in hadrons

The approximate chiral invariance of the two-flavor QCD is known to be spontaneously broken. This effect explains the relatively small pion mass and, as is widely believed, the mass splittings of would-be chiral partners --- the hadrons of equal spin but opposite parity lying in one multiplet of the chiral symmetry. We present experimental evidences that in reality such mass splittings in the meson sector seem to be approximately flavor-independent in all cases where they can be tested experimentally --- the spin 0 and 1. In addition, a partial flavor independence holds for spin $1/2$ baryons (namely among states in which at least one of quarks is not $u$ or $d$ one). This property allows to predict masses and quantum numbers for 10 new hadrons. Some interesting consequences are discussed.

Generalized Soft Wall Model

We develop an exactly solvable generalization of the soft wall holographic model for the vector mesons. The generalization preserves the ultraviolet and infrared asymptotics of the soft wall model and contains an additional free parameter. This new parameter provides an arbitrary intercept in the Regge like spectrum of radial excitations and leads to a substantial modification of asymptotic expansion of the vector correlator at large momentum. The matching to the Operator Product Expansion from QCD allows to estimate the value of the new parameter which is shown to be in a good agreement with the phenomenology. In addition, the mass splitting between the vector and axial mesons arises naturally via the opposite sign of the introduced contribution to the intercept.

Lagrangian alternative to QCD string

The spectrum of radially excited hadrons provides much information about the confinement forces in QCD. The confinement is realized most naturally in terms of the QCD string whose quantization gives rise to the radially excited modes. We propose an alternative framework for the description of the excited spectrum. Namely we put forward some effective field models in which the hadrons acquire masses due to interaction with a scalar field modeling the non-perturbative gluon vacuum. The effective potential for this field is periodic with an infinite number of non-equivalent vacua. The radially excited hadrons emerge as elementary excitations over different vacua. We construct explicit examples for such effective theories in the meson sector. An interesting byproduct of the considered models is the existence of a classical field configuration in each vacuum. Depending on the model, it can represent a domain wall, Nielsen-Olesen vortex or 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole. In the pure scalar sector, it is shown that the first quantum correction leads to splitting of the radially excited modes into two nearly degenerate states. Such a phenomenon has some phenomenological support. The presented approach may be also viewed as an alternative framework to the bottom-up AdS/QCD models where the radial excitations appear on the classical level as well.

The quark masses and meson spectrum: A holographic approach

The spectrum of radially excited unflavored vector mesons is relatively well measured, especially in the heavy-quark sector. This provides a unique opportunity to observe the behavior of the hadron spectrum at fixed quantum numbers as a function of the quark mass. The experimental data suggests the approximately Regge form for the radial spectrum, M_n^2=An+B, where A and B are growing functions of the quark mass. We use the bottom-up holographic approach to find the functions A and B. The obtained result shows a good agreement with the phenomenology and consistency with some predictions of the Veneziano-like dual amplitudes.

Soft wall model with inverse exponential profile as a model for the axial and pseudoscalar mesons

According to the conjecture of the gauge/gravity duality a strongly coupled 4D field theory may be described by a dual 5D theory which is a free field theory in the first approximation. The usual description of the axial-vector sector in the bottom-up AdS/QCD models includes, however, the quartic interaction with a bulk scalar field. The question appears whether it is possible to describe some aspects of the chiral symmetry breaking in a way more consistent with the original proposal, i.e. within a free 5D theory? We suggest that a natural candidate for this purpose is the soft-wall model with inverse exponential profile.

Low-energy holographic models for QCD

We consider the bottom-up holographic models for QCD which contain the ultraviolet (UV) cutoff. Such models are supposed to describe exclusively the low-energy sector of QCD. The introduction of UV cutoff in the soft wall model is shown to result in a model with qualitatively different predictions. The ensuing model seems to be able to incorporate the constituent quark mass. It is also demonstrated that in order to reproduce the results of the usual soft wall model for the vector and higher spin mesons in the presence of the UV cutoff one can consider the flat bulk space with a modified dilaton background.

preprint2011arXiv

No-Wall Holographic Model for QCD

We propose a new type of bottom-up holographic model describing the Regge like spectrum of mesons. This type of spectrum emerges due to condensation of a scalar field in the bulk anti-de Sitter space. The gauge invariance of the action describing the vector mesons requires that the bulk scalar field must correspond to an operator of canonical dimension two. This is not necessary for the description of the scalar sector where the generation of the mass spectrum can be directly related to the formation of gluon condensate in QCD. It is also demonstrated that such an explicit introduction of local dim2 operator into the model leads to disappearance of the corresponding contribution from the dim2 condensate in the power expansion of the gauge-invariant vector correlator as required by QCD.

Veneziano like amplitude as a test for AdS/QCD models

The high energy asymptotics of QCD correlation functions is often used as a test for bottom-up holographic models. Since QCD is not strongly coupled in the ultraviolet domain, such a test may look questionable. We propose that the sum over resonance poles emerging in correlators of a bottom-up model should reproduce the structure of a Veneziano like amplitude at zero momentum transfer assuming equivalence of spin and radial states in the latter. This requires a five-dimensional background that suppresses the ultraviolet part in the effective action of a model. We give examples of emerging low-energy holographic models.

preprint2010arXiv

A five-dimensional effective model for excited light mesons

In the usual holographic approach to QCD, the meson spectrum is generated due to a non-trivial 5-dimensional background. We propose an alternative 5-dimensional scenario in which the spectrum emerges due to coupling to a scalar field whose condensation is supposed to be dual to the formation of gluon condensate and mimics the scale anomaly in QCD. The spectrum of model has finite number of discrete states plus continuum and reveals a Regge-like behavior in the strong coupling regime.

A five-dimensional toy-model for light hadron excitations

In the usual holographic approach to QCD, the meson spectrum is generated due to a non-trivial 5-dimensional background. We propose an alternative 5-dimensional scenario in which the spectrum emerges due to coupling to a scalar field whose condensation is supposed to be dual to the formation of gluon condensate and mimics the scale anomaly in QCD. The spectrum of model has finite number of discrete states plus continuum and reveals a Regge-like behavior in the strong coupling regime.

Holographic like models as a five-dimensional rewriting of large-Nc QCD

The AdS/QCD models are known to be tightly related with the QCD sum rules in the large-Nc (called also planar) limit. Rewriting the theory of infinite tower of free stable mesons expected in the large-Nc QCD as a five-dimensional theory we scrutinize to what extend the bottom-up holographic models may be viewed as an alternative language expressing the phenomenology of planar QCD sum rules. It is found that many features of AdS/QCD models can be thereby obtained without invoking prescriptions from the original AdS/CFT correspondence. Under some assumptions, all possibilities leading to simple Regge trajectories are classified and it is argued that the most phenomenologically consistent model is the one called "soft wall model" in the holographic approach, with a preference to the positive-sign dilaton background.

Selected issues on justification of holographic approach to QCD

Some problems with theoretical foundations of bottom-up holographic models are briefly discussed. It is pointed out that the spectroscopic aspects of these models in principle do not require the AdS/CFT prescriptions and may be interpreted as just an alternative language expressing the phenomenology of QCD sum rules in the large-Nc limit. A general recipe for incorporation of the chiral symmetry breaking scale into the soft-wall holographic models is proposed.

preprint2009arXiv

AdS/QCD models describing a finite number of excited mesons with Regge spectrum

The typical AdS/QCD models deal with the large-N_c limit of QCD, as a consequence the meson spectrum consists of the infinite number of states that is far from the real situation. Basing on introduction of anharmonic corrections to the holographic potential, the corrections whose existence has been recently advocated, we construct a class of bottom-up holographic models describing arbitrary finite number of states in the sector of light mesons. Within the proposed approach, the spectrum of masses square has the following properties: It is linear, $m_n^2\sim n$, at not very large n, nonlinear at larger n, with the nonlinear corrections being subleading in 1/N_c, has a limiting mass, and the number of states is proportional to N_c. The considered holographic models reflect thereby the merging of resonances into continuum and the breaking of gluon string at sufficiently large quark-antiquark separation that causes the linear Regge trajectories to bend down. We show that these models provide a correct description for the spectrum of excited rho-mesons.

Matching Regge Theory to the OPE

The spectra of masses and decay constants for non-strange meson resonances in the energy range 0--2.5 GeV is analyzed. It is known from meson phenomenology that for given quantum numbers these spectra approximately follow linear trajectories with a universal slope. These facts can be understood in terms of an effective string description for QCD. For light meson states the trajectories deviate noticeably from the linear behavior. We investigate the possible corrections to the linear trajectories by matching two-point correlators of quark currents to the Operator Product Expansion (OPE). We find that the allowed modifications to the linear Regge behavior must decrease rapidly with the principal quantum number. After fitting the lightest states in each channel and certain low-energy constants the whole spectrum for meson masses and residues is obtained in a satisfactory agreement with phenomenology. We briefly speculate on possible implications for the QCD effective string.

preprint2003arXiv

Quark condensate and deviations from string-like behaviour of meson spectra

I analyse the hypothesis that deviations from the linear meson mass spectra appear due to the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. It is shown that the linear mass spectrum for the light, non-strange vector and axial-vector mesons is then parametrized by the constant $f_π$, being successful phenomenologically. The toy model for deviations from linearity is proposed.
