Proton-induced activation cross sections in the energy range below 1 GeV

(Abridged) Modern studies and industrial applications related to the design, radiation protection, and reliability of nuclear facilities, medical applications, as well as space research and exploration are relying on extensive simulations and modeling. Computer codes realizing semi-classical and quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) approaches are often employed to make up for the lack of accelerator data on many nuclear reactions at intermediate and high energies (>10s of MeV/n) and are in high demand. This contribution focuses on the methodology of generating reliable proton-induced cross sections in the energy range below 1 GeV. We developed a problem-oriented computer framework based on MCNPX and CASCADE/INPE codes to calculate activation cross section data at intermediate and high energies. Goodness of the fits of nucleon-nucleus interaction models to the existing data is evaluated based on elaborated algorithms. The method is based on the analysis of a large set of data and calculated cross sections for different targets and residual nuclei in a wide range of proton energies using numerous criteria. In practice, this could be done by tuning the model parameters and algorithms to fit required experimental data subset, or through achieving unification and consistency of fundamental parameters for all considered reactions. The presented framework is pursuing the latter approach. We use proton-induced reactions on Si and Fe nuclei to illustrate the application of the developed multi-criteria algorithm, where we use all data below 1 GeV available from the EXFOR data library and the IAEA CRP "Benchmark of Spallation Models." We show that the analysis of the predictive power of various intermediate and high-energy models based on the multi-criteria algorithm allows more sophisticated selection of appropriate models in a given energy range and residual nuclei domain.

A Perturbation Algorithm for the Pointers of Franke-Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan Equation

This paper is devoted to the study of behavior of open quantum systems consistently based on the Franke-Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan (FGKLS) equation which covers evolution in situations when decoherence can be distinguished. We focus on the quantum measurement operation which is determined by final stationary states of an open system - so called pointers. We find pointers by applying the FGKLS equation to asymptotically constant density matrix. In seeking pointers, we have been able to propose a perturbative scheme of calculation, if we take the interaction components with an environment to be weak. Thus, the Lindblad operators can be used in some way as expansion parameters for perturbation theory. The scheme we propose is different for the cases of non-degenerate and degenerate Hamiltonian. We illustrate our scheme by particular examples of quantum harmonic oscillator with spin in external magnetic field. The efficiency of the perturbation algorithm is demonstrated by its comparison with the exact solution.

Chiral perturbation theory vs. Linear Sigma Model in a chiral imbalance medium

We compare Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and the Linear Sigma Model (LSM) as realizations of low energy QCD for light mesons in a chirally imbalanced medium. The relations between the low-energy constants of the Chiral Lagrangian and the corresponding constants of the Linear Sigma Model are established as well as the expressions for the decay constant of the $π$-meson in the medium and the mass of the $a_0$. In the large $N_c$ count taken from QCD the correspondence of ChPT and LSM is remarkably good and give a solid ground for search of chiral imbalance manifestation in pion physics. A possible experimental detection of chiral imbalance tracks (and therefore a phase with Local Parity Breaking) in the charged pion decays inside the fireball is outlined.

Stellar matter with pseudoscalar condensates

In this work we consider how the appearance of gradients of pseudoscalar condensates in dense systems may possibly influence the transport properties of photons in such a medium as well as other thermodynamic characteristics. We adopt the hypothesis that in regions where the pseudoscalar density gradient is large the properties of photons and fermions are governed by the usual lagrangian extended with a Chern-Simons interaction for photons and a constant axial field for fermions. We find that these new pieces in the lagrangian produce non-trivial reflection coefficients both for photons and fermions when entering or leaving a region where the pseudoscalar has a non-zero gradient. A varying pseudoscalar density may also lead to instability of some fermion and boson modes and modify some properties of the Fermi sea. We speculate that some of these modifications could influence the cooling rate of stellar matter (for instance in compact stars) and have other observable consequences. While quantitative results may depend on precise astrophysical details most of the consequences are quite universal and consideration should be given to this possibility.

Effects of pseudoscalar condensation on the cooling of neutron stars

In this work we consider the effect that the appearance of pseudoscalar condensates in a neutron star can have on its cooling rate. We make no particular assumption on the origin and characteristics of these possible condensates and only assume that in regions where the pseudoscalar density varies the propagation of photons is governed by modified Maxwell-Chern-Simons electrodynamics. We find that this gives non-trivial reflection coefficients between regions of different pseudoscalar density and may affect very substantially the star cooling rate. While quantitative results do depend on precise details that can only be answered once a proper equation of state is determined, the general trend is quite universal and serious consideration should be given to this possibility.

Searching for P- and CP-odd effects in heavy ion collisions

In this talk we will summarize the main results from our recent work concerning the possibility that a new metastable phase occurs in some heavy ion collisions (HIC). This phase would be characterized by the breaking of two characteristic symmetries of strong interactions; namely P and CP. We investigate the experimental consequences of parity breaking in such a situation and propose suitable observables to elucidate the presence this phenomenon.

The masses of vector mesons in holographic QCD at finite chiral chemical potential

Central heavy-ion collisions may induce sizeable fluctuations of the topological charge. This effect is expected to distort the dispersion relation for the hadron masses. We construct a general setup for a compact description of this phenomenon in the framework of bottom-up holographic approach to QCD. A couple of soft wall holographic models are proposed for the vector mesons. The states having different circular polarizations are shown to have different effective mass. The requirement of stability imposes strong constraints on the possible choice of models.

Spontaneous parity violation in extreme conditions: an effective lagrangian analysis

We investigate how large baryon densities (and possibly high temperatures) may induce spontaneous parity violation in the composite meson sector of vector-like gauge theory (presumably QCD or techni-QCD) . The analysis at intermediate energy scales is done by using an extended $σ$-model lagrangian that includes two scalar and two pseudoscalar multiplets and fulfills low-energy constraints for vector-like gauge theories. We elaborate on a novel mechanism of parity breaking based on the interplay between lightest and heavier meson condensates, which therefore cannot be realized in the simplest $σ$ model. The results are relevant for an idealized homogeneous and infinite nuclear (quark or techniquark) matter where the influence of density can be examined with the help of a constant chemical potential. The model is able to describe satisfactorily the first-order phase transition to stable nuclear matter, and predicts a second-order phase transition to a state where parity is spontaneously broken. We argue that the parity breaking phenomenon is quite generic when a large enough chemical potential is present. Current quark masses are explicitly taken into account in this work and shown not to change the general conclusions.

Passing the boundary between the parity breaking medium and vacuum by vector particles

The electrodynamics supplemented with a Chern-Simons (CS) action (Carrol-Field-Jackiw electrodynamics) in a half space is studied. The passage of photons and/or massive vector mesons through a boundary between the CS medium and the vacuum of conventional Maxwell electrodynamics is investigated. Effects of reflection from a boundary (up to the total one) are revealed when vector particles escape to vacuum and income from vacuum passing the boundary. Both the space-like and time-like CS vectors are considered.

Universal Landau Pole

Our understanding of quantum gravity suggests that at the Planck scale the usual geometry loses its meaning. If so, the quest for grand unification in a large non-abelian group naturally endowed with the property of asymptotic freedom may also lose its motivation. Instead we propose an unification of all fundamental interactions at the Planck scale in the form of a Universal Landau Pole (ULP), at which all gauge couplings diverge. The Higgs quartic coupling also diverges while the Yukawa couplings vanish. The unification is achieved with the addition of fermions with vector gauge couplings coming in multiplets and with hypercharges identical to those of the the Standard Model. The presence of these particles also prevents the Higgs quartic coupling from becoming negative, thus avoiding the instability (or metastability) of the SM vacuum.

Dilepton excess from local parity breaking in baryon matter

We propose that local parity breaking induced by a large-scale fluctuation of topological charge at large temperatures and/or condensation of pseudoscalar mesons in the isotriplet channel for large baryon densities may be responsible for the substantial dilepton excess that is found for low invariant masses and moderate values of $p_T$ in central heavy ions collisions. This insofar unexplained enhancement could be understood by a combination of two effects leading both to an excess of $e^+e^-$ and $μ^+ μ^-$ pairs with respect to theoretical predictions based on conventional hadronic processes: (a) a modification of the dispersion relation of photons and vector mesons propagating in such a nuclear medium due to local parity breaking; (b) the appearance of new decay channels, forbidden by parity conservation in QCD in the usual vacuum. Possible signatures of this effect and perspectives for its detection are discussed.

Nonlinear Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics: concepts and realizations

Nonlinear SUSY approach to preparation of quantum systems with pre-planned spectral properties is reviewed. Possible multidimensional extensions of Nonlinear SUSY are described. The full classification of ladder-reducible and irreducible chains of SUSY algebras in one-dimensional QM is given. Emergence of hidden symmetries and spectrum generating algebras is elucidated in the context of Nonlinear SUSY in one- and two-dimensional QM.

Factorization Method in Curvilinear Coordinates and Pairing of Levels for Matrix Potentials

Multidimensional factorization method is formulated in arbitrary curvilinear coordinates. Particular cases of polar and spherical coordinates are considered and matrix potentials with separating variables are constructed. A new class of matrix potentials is obtained which reveals a double degeneracy or equidistant splitting of energy levels (hidden symmetry).

Propagation of photons and massive vector mesons between a parity breaking medium and vacuum

The problem of propagation of photons and massive vector mesons in the presence of Lorenz and CPT invariance violating medium is studied when the parity-odd medium is bounded by a hyperplane separating it from the vacuum. The solutions in both half-spaces are carefully discussed and in the case of space-like boundary stitched on the boundary with help of the Bogolubov transformations provided by the space-like Chern-Simons vector. The presence of two different Fock vacua is shown and the probability amplitude for transmission of particles from vacuum to parity breaking medium is calculated. We have also found classical solutions and showed that the results are consistent with ones obtained by canonical quantization formalism. In the cases, both of entrance to and of escaping from parity-odd medium, the probabilities for reflecting and passing through were found for each polarization using the classical solutions. Finally, the propagator for each polarization is obtained in the momentum space. Boundary effects under consideration are of certain importance for registration of local parity violation in the finite volume of heavy ion fireball and/or of a star with cold axion condensate.

Spectral Action from Anomalies

Starting from a theory of fermions moving in a fixed gauge and gravitational background we implement the scale invariance of the theory. Upon quantization the theory is anomalous but the anomaly can be cancelled by the addition of another term to the action. This term comes out to be basically the Chamseddine Connes spectral action introduced in the context of noncommutative geometry. An alternative realization of the dilaton may involve a collective scalar mode of all fermions accumulated in a {scale-noninvariant} dilaton action. The entire spectral action describes gauge and Higgs fields coupled with gravity. Here this action is coupled with a dilaton and we discuss how it relates to the transition from the radiation to the electroweak broken phase via condensation of Higgs fields.

Spectral action, Weyl anomaly and the Higgs-Dilaton potential

We show how the bosonic spectral action emerges from the fermionic action by the renormalization group flow in the presence of a dilaton and the Weyl anomaly. The induced action comes out to be basically the Chamseddine-Connes spectral action introduced in the context of noncommutative geometry. The entire spectral action describes gauge and Higgs fields coupled with gravity. We then consider the effective potential and show, that it has the desired features of a broken and an unbroken phase, with the roll down.

Bare and Induced Lorentz and CPT Invariance Violations in QED

We consider QED in a constant axial vector background (Æther). Further Lorentz invariance violations (LIV) might occur owing to radiative corrections. The phenomenology of this model is studied, clarifying issues related to the various regularizations employed, with a particular emphasis on the induced photon mass. To this concern, it is shown that in the presence of LIV dimensional regularization may produce a radiatively induced finite photon mass. The possible physical role of the large momentum cutoff is elucidated and the finite temperature radiative corrections are evaluated. Finally, various experimental bounds on the parameters of the model are discussed.

Black stars induced by matter on a brane: exact solutions

New exact asymptotically flat solutions of five-dimensional Einstein equations with horizon are found to describe multidimensional black stars generated by matter on the brane, conceivably on high energy colliders. The five-dimensional space-time is realized as an orbifold against reflection of a special extra-space coordinate and matter on the brane is induced by tailoring of the five-dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole metric.

preprint2010arXiv

Bosonic Spectral Action Induced from Anomaly Cancelation

We show how (a slight modification of) the noncommutative geometry bosonic spectral action can be obtained by the cancelation of the scale anomaly of the fermionic action. In this sense the standard model coupled with gravity is induced by the quantum nature of the fermions. The regularization used is very natural in noncommutative geometry and puts the bosonic and fermionic action on a similar footing.

Spectral singularities for Non-Hermitian one-dimensional Hamiltonians: puzzles with resolution of identity

We examine the completeness of bi-orthogonal sets of eigenfunctions for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians possessing a spectral singularity. The correct resolutions of identity are constructed for delta like and smooth potentials. Their form and the contribution of a spectral singularity depend on the class of functions employed for physical states. With this specification there is no obstruction to completeness originating from a spectral singularity.

Phantom without phantom or how the PT symmetry saves us from the Big Rip

We consider the PT symmetric flat Friedmann model of two scalar fields with positive kinetic terms. While the potential of one ("normal") field is taken real, that of the other field is complex. We study a complex classical solution of the system of the two Klein-Gordon equations together with the Friedmann equation. The solution for the normal field is real while the solution for the second field is purely imaginary, realizing classically the "phantom" behavior. The energy density and pressure are real and the corresponding geometry is well-defined. The Lagrangian for the linear perturbations has the correct potential signs for both the fields, so that the problem of stability does not arise. The background dynamics is determined by an effective action including two real fields one normal and one "phantom". Remarkably, the phantom phase in the cosmological evolution is transient and the Big Rip never occurs. Our model is contrasted to well-known quintom models, which also include one normal and one phantom fields.

Two-field cosmological models and large-scale cosmic magnetic fields

We consider two different toy cosmological models based on two fields (one normal scalar and one phantom) realizing the same evolution of the Bang-to-Rip type. One of the fields (pseudoscalar) interacts with the magnetic field breaking the conformal invariance of the latter. The effects of the amplification of cosmic magnetic fields are studied and it is shown that the presence of such effects can discriminate between different cosmological models realizing the same global evolution of the universe.

Factorization of nonlinear supersymmetry in one-dimensional Quantum Mechanics. I: general classification of reducibility and analysis of the third-order algebra

We study possible factorizations of supersymmetric (SUSY) transformations in the one-dimensional quantum mechanics into chains of elementary Darboux transformations with nonsingular coefficients. A classification of irreducible (almost) isospectral transformations and of related SUSY algebras is presented. The detailed analysis of SUSY algebras and isospectral operators is performed for the third-order case.

Non-Hermitian Quantum Mechanics of Non-diagonalizable Hamiltonians: puzzles with self-orthogonal states

We consider QM with non-Hermitian quasi-diagonalizable Hamiltonians, i.e. the Hamiltonians having a number of Jordan cells in particular biorthogonal bases. The "self-orthogonality" phenomenon is clarified in terms of a correct spectral decomposition and it is shown that "self-orthogonal" states never jeopardize resolution of identity and thereby quantum averages of observables. The example of a complex potential leading to one Jordan cell in the Hamiltonian is constructed and its origin from level coalescence is elucidated. Some puzzles with zero-binorm bound states in continuous spectrum are unraveled with the help of a correct resolution of identity.

Brane world generation by matter and gravity

We present a non-compact (4 + 1) dimensional model with a local strong four-fermion interaction supplementing it with gravity. In the strong coupling regime it reveals the spontaneous translational symmetry breaking which eventually leads to the formation of domain walls, or thick 3-branes, embedded in the AdS-5 manifold. To describe this phenomenon we construct the appropriate low-energy effective Action and find kink-like vacuum solutions in the quasi-flat Riemannian metric. We discuss the generation of ultra-low-energy (3 + 1) dimensional physics and we establish the relation among the bulk five dimensional gravitational constant, the brane Newton's constants and the curvature of AdS-5 space-time. The plausible relation between the compositeness scale of the scalar matter and the symmetry breaking scale is shown to support the essential decoupling of branons, the scalar fluctuations of the brane, from the Standard Model matter, supporting their possible role in the dark matter saturation. The induced cosmological constant on the brane does vanish due to exact cancellation of matter and gravity contributions.

Stringification of Chiral Dynamics: Wess-Zumino interaction

The QCD hadronic string is supplemented with the reparameterization-invariant boundary interaction to background chiral fields associated with pions in a way compatible with the conformal symmetry. It allows the full reconstruction of the P-even part of the Chiral Lagrangian in a good agreement with the phenomenology of P-even meson interactions. The modification of boundary interaction necessary to induce the parity-odd Chiral Dynamics (WZW action) is outlined.

Matching Regge Theory to the OPE

The spectra of masses and decay constants for non-strange meson resonances in the energy range 0--2.5 GeV is analyzed. It is known from meson phenomenology that for given quantum numbers these spectra approximately follow linear trajectories with a universal slope. These facts can be understood in terms of an effective string description for QCD. For light meson states the trajectories deviate noticeably from the linear behavior. We investigate the possible corrections to the linear trajectories by matching two-point correlators of quark currents to the Operator Product Expansion (OPE). We find that the allowed modifications to the linear Regge behavior must decrease rapidly with the principal quantum number. After fitting the lightest states in each channel and certain low-energy constants the whole spectrum for meson masses and residues is obtained in a satisfactory agreement with phenomenology. We briefly speculate on possible implications for the QCD effective string.

Nonlinear supersymmetry in Quantum Mechanics: algebraic properties and differential representation

We study the Nonlinear (Polynomial, N-fold,...) Supersymmetry algebra in one-dimensional QM. Its structure is determined by the type of conjugation operation (Hermitian conjugation or transposition) and described with the help of the Super-Hamiltonian projection on the zero-mode subspace of a supercharge. We show that the SUSY algebra with transposition symmetry is always polynomial in the Hamiltonian if supercharges represent differential operators of finite order. The appearance of the extended SUSY with several (complex or real) supercharges is analyzed in details and it is established that no more than two independent supercharges may generate a Nonlinear superalgebra which can be appropriately specified as {\cal N} = 2 SUSY. In this case we find a non-trivial hidden symmetry operator and rephrase it as a non-linear function of the Super-Hamiltonian on the physical state space. The full {\cal N} = 2 Non-linear SUSY algebra includes "central charges" both polynomial and non-polynomial (due to a symmetry operator) in the Super-Hamiltonian.

Lorentz and CPT violations from Chern-Simons modifications of QED

The possibility of a small modification of spinor Quantum Electro-Dynamics is reconsidered, in which Lorentz and CPT non-covariant kinetic terms for photons and fermions are present. The corresponding free field theory is carefully discussed. The finite one-loop parity-odd induced effective action is unambiguously calculated using the physical cutoff method, which manifestly encodes the maximal residual symmetry group allowed by the presence of the Lorentz and CPT breaking axial-vector. This very same induced effective action, which is different from those ones so far quoted in the Literature, is also re-derived by means of the dimensional regularization, provided the maximal residual symmetry is maintained in the enlarged $D$-dimensional space-time. As a consequence, it turns out that the requirement of keeping the maximal residual symmetry at the quantum level just corresponds to the physical renormalization prescription which naturally fixes the one-loop parity-odd induced effective action.

Higher-Order Derivative Susy in Quantum Mechanics with Large Energy Shifts

Within the framework of second order derivative (one dimensional) SUSYQM we discuss particular realizations which incorporate large energy shifts between the lowest states of the spectrum of the superhamiltonian (of Schrödinger type). The technique used in this construction is based on the "gluing" procedure. We study the limit of infinite energy shift for the charges of the Higher Derivative SUSY Algebra, and compare the results with those of the standard SUSY Algebra. We conjecture that our results can suggest a construction of a toy model where large energy splittings between fermionic and bosonic partners do not affect the SUSY at low energies.

Lorentz Symmetry Breaking in Abelian Vector-Field Models with Wess-Zumino Interaction

We consider the abelian vector-field models in the presence of the Wess-Zumino interaction with the pseudoscalar matter. The occurence of the dynamic breaking of Lorentz symmetry at classical and one-loop level is described for massless and massive vector fields. This phenomenon appears to be the non-perturbative counterpart of the perturbative renormalizability and/or unitarity breaking in the chiral gauge theories.

Second Order Derivative Supersymmetry and Scattering Problem

Extensions of standard one-dimensional supersymmetric quantum mechanics are discussed. Supercharges involving higher order derivatives are introduced leading to an algebra which incorporates a higher order polynomial in the Hamiltonian. We study scattering amplitudes for that problem. We also study the role of a dilatation of the spatial coordinate leading to a q-deformed supersymmetric algebra. An explicit model for the scattering amplitude is constructed in terms of a hypergeometric function which corresponds to a reflectionless potential with infinitely many bound states.

Vacuum fine tuning and empirical estimations of masses of the top-quark and Higgs boson

The fine-tuning principles are analyzed in search for predictions of top-quark and Higgs-boson masses. The modification of Veltman condition based on the compensation between fermion and boson vacuum energies within the Standard Model multiplets is proposed. It is supplied with the stability under rescaling and with the requirement of minimum for the physical v. e. v. for the Higgs field (zero anomalous dimension). Their joint solution for top-quark and Higgs-boson couplings exists for the cutoff $Λ\approx 2.3 \cdot 10^{13}\,GeV$ that yields the low-energy values $m_t = 151 \pm 4\,GeV; m_H = 195 \pm 7\,GeV$.
