NMR evidence against a spin-nematic nature of the presaturation phase in the frustrated magnet SrZnVO(PO4)2

Using $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) we investigate the recently discovered presaturation phase in the highly frustrated two-dimensional spin system SrZnVO(PO$_4$)$_2$ [F. Landolt et al., Phys. Rev. B 104, 224435 (2021)]. Our data provide two pieces of evidence against the presumed spin-nematic character of this phase: i) NMR spectra reveal that it hosts a dipolar spin order and ii) the 1/$T_1$ relaxation rate data recorded above the saturation field can be fitted by the sum of a single-magnon term, exponential in the gap, and a critical second-order term, exponential in the triple gap, leaving no space for a nematic spin dynamics, characterized by a double-gap exponential. We explain the unexpectedly broad validity of the simple fit and the related critical spin dynamics.

Spin correlations in the frustrated ferro-antiferromagnet SrZnVO(PO4)2 near saturation

Single crystal elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments are performed on the frustrated ferro-antiferromagnet SrZnVO(PO4)2 in high magnetic fields. The fully polarized state, the presaturation phase and the columnar-antiferromagnetic phase just bellow the presaturation phase were investigated. The observed renormalization of spin wave bandwidths, re-distribution of intensities between different branches and non-linearities in the magnetization curve are all indicative of strong deviations from classical spin wave theory. The previously observed presaturation transition is attributed to a staggered pattern of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions.

Complex magnetic structure and spin waves of the noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn5Si3

The investigations of the interconnection between micro- and macroscopic properties of materials hosting noncollinear antiferromagnetic ground states are challenging. These forefront studies are crucial for unraveling the underlying mechanisms at play, which may prove beneficial in designing cutting edge multifunctional materials for future applications. In this context, Mn5Si3 has regained scientific interest since it displays an unusual and complex ground state, which is considered to be the origin of the anomalous transport and thermodynamic properties that it exhibits. Here, we report the magnetic exchange couplings of the noncollinear antiferromagnetic phase of Mn5Si3 using inelastic neutron scattering measurements and density functional theory calculations. We determine the ground-state spin configuration and compute its magnon dispersion relations which are in good agreement with the ones obtained experimentally. Furthermore, we investigate the evolution of the spin texture under the application of an external magnetic field to demonstrate theoretically the multiple field-induced phase transitions that Mn5Si3 undergoes. Finally, we model the stability of some of the material's magnetic moments under a magnetic field and we find that very susceptible magnetic moments in a frustrated arrangement can be tuned by the field.

Direct evidence of weakly dispersed and strongly anharmonic optical phonons in hybrid perovskites

Hybrid organolead perovskites (HOP) have started to establish themselves in the field of photovoltaics, mainly due to their great optoelectronic properties and steadily improving solar cell efficiency. Study of the lattice dynamics is key in understanding the electron-phonon interactions at play, responsible for such properties. Here, we investigate, via neutron and Raman spectroscopies, the optical phonon spectrum of four different HOP single crystals: MAPbBr$_3$, FAPbBr$_3$, MAPbI$_3$, and $α$-FAPbI$_3$. Low temperature spectra reveal weakly dispersive optical phonons, at energies as low as 2-5~meV, which seem to be the origin of the limit of the charge carriers mobilities in these materials. The temperature dependence of our neutron spectra shows as well a significant anharmonic behaviour, resulting in optical phonon overdamping at temperatures as low as 80~K, questionning the validity of the quasi-particle picture for the low energy optical modes at room temperature where the solar cells operate.

No evidence for interstellar planetesimals trapped in the Solar System

In two recent papers published in MNRAS, Namouni and Morais (2018, 2020) claimed evidence for the interstellar origin of some small Solar System bodies, including i) objects in retrograde co-orbital motion with the giant planets, and ii) the highly-inclined Centaurs. Here, we discuss the flaws of those papers that invalidate the authors' conclusions. Numerical simulations backwards in time are not representative of the past evolution of real bodies. Instead, these simulations are only useful as a means to quantify the short dynamical lifetime of the considered bodies and the fast decay of their population. In light of this fast decay, if the observed bodies were the survivors of populations of objects captured from interstellar space in the early Solar System, these populations should have been implausibly large (e.g. about 10 times the current main asteroid belt population for the retrograde coorbital of Jupiter). More likely, the observed objects are just transient members of a population that is maintained in quasi-steady state by a continuous flux of objects from some parent reservoir in the distant Solar System. We identify in the Halley type comets and the Oort cloud the most likely sources of retrograde coorbitals and highly-inclined Centaurs.

Spin-waves in the collinear antiferromagnetic phase of Mn$_\bf{5}$Si$_\bf{3}$

By combining two independent approaches, inelastic neutron scattering measurements and density functional theory calculations, we study the spin-waves in the high-temperature collinear antiferromagnetic phase (AFM2) of Mn$_5$Si$_3$. We obtain its magnetic ground-state properties and electronic structure. This study allowed us to determine the dominant magnetic exchange interactions and magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the AFM2 phase of Mn$_5$Si$_3$. Moreover, the evolution of the spin excitation spectrum is investigated under the influence of an external magnetic field perpendicular to the anisotropy easy-axis. The low energy magnon modes show a different magnetic field dependence which is a direct consequence of their different precessional nature. Finally, possible effects related to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are also considered.

Total interference between nuclear and magnetovibrational one-phonon scattering cross sections

A full phonon intensity cancellation is reported in a longitudinal polarized inelastic neutron scattering experiment performed on the magnetocaloric compound MnFe$_{4}$Si$_{3}$, a ferromagnet with $T_{Curie}$ $\approx$ 305 K. The TA[100] phonon polarized along the $c$-axis measured from the Brillouin zone center $\textbf{G}$=(0, 0, 2) is observed only in one ($σ_{z}^{++}$) of the two non-spin-flip polarization channels and is absent in the other one ($σ_{z}^{--}$) at low temperatures. This effect disappears at higher temperatures, in the vicinity of $T_{Curie}$, where the phonon is measured in both channels with nonetheless marked different intensities. The effect is understood as originating from nuclear-magnetic interference between the nuclear one-phonon and the magnetovibrational one-phonon scattering cross-sections. The total cancellation reported is accidental, i.e. does not correspond to a systematic effect, as established by measurements in different Brillouin zones.

Ising incommensurate spin resonance of CeCoIn$_{5}$: a dynamical precursor of the Q-phase

It is shown by detailed inelastic neutron scattering experiments that the gapped collective magnetic excitation of the unconventional superconductor CeCoIn$_{5}$, the spin resonance mode, is incommensurate and that the corresponding fluctuations are of Ising nature. The incommensurate peak position of these fluctuations corresponds to the propagation vector of the adjacent field induced static magnetic ordered phase, the so-called Q-phase. Furthermore, the direction of the magnetic moment fluctuations is also the direction of the ordered magnetic moments of the Q-phase. Hence the resonance mode and the Q-phase share the same symmetry and this strongly supports a scenario where the static order is realized by a condensation of the magnetic excitation.

Longitudinal and Transverse Zeeman Ladders in the Ising-Like Chain Antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8

We explore the spin dynamics emerging from the Néel phase of the chain compound antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8. Our inelastic neutron scattering study reveals unconventional discrete spin excitations, so called Zeeman ladders, understood in terms of spinon confinement, due to the interchain attractive linear potential. These excitations consist in two interlaced series of modes, respectively with transverse and longitudinal polarization. The latter have no classical counterpart and are related to the zero-point fluctuations that weaken the ordered moment in weakly coupled quantum chains. Our analysis reveals that BaCo2V2O8, with moderate Ising anisotropy and sizable interchain interactions, remarkably fulfills the conditions necessary for the observation of these longitudinal excitations.

Lattice dynamics of the heavy fermion compound URu$_2$Si$_2$

We report a comprehensive investigation of the lattice dynamics of URu$_2$Si$_2$ as a function of temperature using Raman scattering, optical conductivity and inelastic neutron scattering measurements as well as theoretical {\it ab initio} calculations. The main effects on the optical phonon modes are related to Kondo physics. The B$_{1g}$ ($Γ_3$ symmetry) phonon mode slightly softens below $\sim$100~K, in connection with the previously reported softening of the elastic constant, $C_{11}-C_{12}$, of the same symmetry, both observations suggesting a B$_{1g}$ symmetry-breaking instability in the Kondo regime. Through optical conductivity, we detect clear signatures of strong electron-phonon coupling, with temperature dependent spectral weight and Fano line shape of some phonon modes. Surprisingly, the line shapes of two phonon modes, E$_u$(1) and A$_{2u}$(2), show opposite temperature dependencies. The A$_{2u}$(2) mode loses its Fano shape below 150 K, whereas the E$_u$(1) mode acquires it below 100~K, in the Kondo cross-over regime. This may point out to momentum-dependent Kondo physics. By inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we have drawn the full dispersion of the phonon modes between 300~K and 2~K. No remarkable temperature dependence has been obtained including through the hidden order transition. {\it Ab initio} calculations with the spin-orbit coupling are in good agreement with the data except for a few low energy branches with propagation in the (a,b) plane.

Magnetic-field enhanced aniferromagnetism in non-centrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si

The effect of magnetic field on the static and dynamic spin correlations in the non-centrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt$_3$Si was investigated by neutron scattering. The application of a magnetic field B increases the antiferromagnetic (AFM) peak intensity. This increase depends strongly on the field direction: for B${\parallel}$[0 0 1] the intensity increases by a factor of 4.6 at a field of 6.6 T, which corresponds to more than a doubling of the AFM moment, while the moment increases by only 10 % for B${\parallel}$[1 0 0] at 5 T. This is in strong contrast to the inelastic response near the antiferromagnetic ordering vector, where no marked field variations are observed for B${\parallel}$[0 0 1] up to 3.8 T. The results reveal that the AFM state in CePt$_3$Si, which coexists with superconductivity, is distinctly different from other unconventional superconductors.

Switching of the magnetic order in CeRhIn$_{5-x}$Sn$_{x}$ in the vicinity of its quantum critical point

We report neutron diffraction experiments performed in the tetragonal antiferromagnetic heavy fermion system CeRhIn$_{5-x}$Sn$_{x}$ in its ($x$, $T$) phase diagram up to the vicinity of the critical concentration $x_c$ $\approx$ 0.40, where long range magnetic order is suppressed. The propagation vector of the magnetic structure is found to be $\bf{k_{IC}}$=(1/2, 1/2, $k_l$) with $k_l$ increasing from $k_l$=0.298 to $k_l$=0.410 when $x$ increases from $x$=0 to $x$=0.26. Surprisingly, for $x$=0.30, the order has changed drastically and a commensurate antiferromagnetism with $\bf{k_{C}}$=(1/2, 1/2, 0) is found. This concentration is located in the proximity of the quantum critical point where superconductivity is expected.

Magnetic order in Ce0.95Nd0.05CoIn5: the Q-phase at zero magnetic field

We report neutron scattering experiment results revealing the nature of the magnetic order occurring in the heavy fermion superconductor Ce0.95Nd0.05CoIn5, a case for which an antiferromagnetic state is stabilized at a temperature below the superconducting transition one. We evidence an incommensurate order and its propagation vector is found to be identical to that of the magnetic field induced antiferromagnetic order occurring in the stoichiometric superconductor CeCoIn5, the so-called Q-phase. The commonality between these two cases suggests that superconductivity is a requirement for the formation of this kind of magnetic order and the proposed mechanism is the enhancement of nesting condition by d-wave order parameter with nodes in the nesting area.

Quantum criticality and Lifshitz transition in the Ising system CeRu2Si2: Comparison with YbRh2Si2

New thermoelectric power (TEP) measurements on prototype heavy-fermion compounds close to magnetic quantum criticality are presented. The highly sensitive technique of TEP is an unique tool to reveal Fermi surface instabilities, referred here as Lifshitz transitions. The first focus is on the Ising CeRu2Si2 series. Doping CeRu2Si2 with Rh produces a decoupling between the first order metamagnetic transition and the pseudo-metamagnetism observed in the pure compound. Comparison is made with the case of YbRh2Si2 which is often considered as the archetype of local quantum criticality by contrast to CeRu2Si2, taken as an example of spin-density wave criticality. Up to now for ferromagnetic materials showing ferromagnetic wings, no simple case appears where the Fermi surface is preserved between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. An open issue is the consequence of Lifshitz transitions on superconductivity in these multiband systems.

Antiferromagnetic criticality at a heavy-fermion quantum phase transition

The interpretation of the magnetic phase diagrams of strongly correlated electron systems remains controversial. In particular, the physics of quantum phase transitions, which occur at zero temperature, is still enigmatic. Heavy-fermion compounds aretextbook examples of quantum criticality, as doping, or the application of pressure or a magnetic field can lead to a quantum phase transition between a magnetically ordered state and a paramagnetic regime. A central question concerns the microscopic nature of the critical quantum fluctuations. Are they antiferromagnetic or of local origin? Here we demonstrate, using inelastic neutron scattering experiments, that the quantum phase transition in the heavy-fermion system Ce1-xLaxRu2Si2 is controlled by fluctuations of the antiferromagnetic order parameter. At least for this heavy-fermion family, the Hertz-Millis-Moriya spin fluctuation approach seems to be a sound basis for describing the quantum antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic instability.

Effects of La non-magnetic impurities on the spin resonance of CeCoIn$_{5}$

The influence of La non magnetic impurities on the spin dynamics of CeCoIn$_{5}$ was studied by inelastic neutron scattering. In La-substituted systems, the spin resonance peak (observed at $Ω_{res}=0.55 meV$ in the pure system) is shifted to lower energies but the ratio $Ω_{res}/k_{B}T_{c}$ remains unchanged. The excitation broadens till it reaches 0.3 meV equal to the value of the quasi-elastic signal in the normal state. The evolution of La substitution is compared with the evolution of the magnetic resonance in Ni and Zn substituted YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$.

Evolution of the spin resonance of CeCoIn$_{5}$ as a function of magnetic field and La substitution

We report the evolution of the spin resonance in CeCoIn$_{5}$ as a function of magnetic field and lanthanum substitution. In both cases, the resonance peak position shifts to lower energy and the lineshape broadens. For La doping, it is found that the ratio $Ω_{res}/k_{B}T_{c}$ is almost constant as a function of $x$. Under magnetic field the decrease of the excitation energy is similar for H// [1,$\bar{1}$,0] and [1,1,1] and faster than the decrease of $T_{c}(H)$. The Zeeman effect found for the field applied along [1,$\bar{1}$,0] corresponds to the ground state magnetic moment.

Understanding the complex phase diagram of uranium: the role of electron-phonon coupling

We report an experimental determination of the dispersion of the soft phonon mode along [1,0,0] in uranium as a function of pressure. The energies of these phonons increase rapidly, with conventional behavior found by 20 GPa, as predicted by recent theory. New calculations demonstrate the strong pressure (and momentum) dependence of the electron-phonon coupling, whereas the Fermi-surface nesting is surprisingly independent of pressure. This allows a full understanding of the complex phase diagram of uranium, and the interplay between the charge-density wave and superconductivity.

Convergence of the enhancement of the effective mass under pressure and magnetic field in heavy-fermion compounds: CeRu2Si2, CeRh2Si2, and CeIn3

Emphasis is given on the observation of a convergence to a critical value of the effective mass of a heavy fermion compound by tuning it through a quantum instability either by applying pressure or magnetic field from an antiferromagnetic (AF) to a paramagnetic (PM) ground state. Macroscopic and microscopic results are discussed and the main message is to rush to the discovery of an ideal material whose Fermi surface could be fully observed on both sides of each quantum phase transition.

Low energy magnetic excitation spectrum of the unconventional ferromagnet CeRh$_{3}$B$_{2}$

The magnetic excitation spectrum of the unconventional ferromagnet CeRh$_{3}$B$_{2}$ was measured by inelastic neutron scattering on single crystal sample in the magnetically ordered and paramagnetic phases. The spin-wave excitation spectrum evidences high exchange interaction along the c-axis about two orders of magnitude higher than the ones in the basal plane of the hexagonal structure. Both strong out of plane and small in plane anisotropies are found. This latter point confirms that considering the $J$=5/2 multiplet alone is not adequate for describing the ground state of CeRh$_{3}$B$_{2}$. Quasielastic scattering measured above $T_{Curie}$ is also strongly anisotropic between the basal plane and the c-axis and suggests localized magnetism.

Quantum criticality of Ce$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$Ru$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ : the magnetically ordered phase

We report specific heat and neutron scattering experiments performed on the system Ce$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$Ru$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ on the magnetic side of its quantum critical phase diagram. The Kondo temperature does not vanish at the quantum phase transition and elastic scattering indicates a gradual localisation of the magnetism when $x$ increases in the ordered phase.

Magnetic structure of CeRhIn$_{5}$ under magnetic field

The magnetically ordered ground state of CeRhIn$_{5}$ at ambient pressure and zero magnetic field is an incomensurate helicoidal phase with the propagation vector $\bf{k}$=(1/2, 1/2, 0.298) and the magnetic moment in the basal plane of the tetragonal structure. We determined by neutron diffraction the two different magnetically ordered phases of CeRhIn$_{5}$ evidenced by bulk measurements under applied magnetic field in its basal plane. The low temperature high magnetic phase corresponds to a sine-wave structure of the magnetization being commensurate with $\bf{k}$=(1/2, 1/2, 1/4). At high temperature, the phase is incommensurate with $\bf{k}$=(1/2, 1/2, 0.298) and a possible small ellipticity. The propagation vector of this phase is the same as the one of the zero-field structure.

Further analysis of the quantum critical point of Ce$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$Ru$_{2}$Si$_{2}$

New data on the spin dynamics and the magnetic order of Ce$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$Ru$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ are presented. The importance of the Kondo effect at the quantum critical point of this system is emphasized from the behaviour of the relaxation rate at high temperature and from the variation of the ordered moment with respect to the one of the Néel temperature for various $x$.

Inelastic neutron scattering study of single crystal heavy fermion YbAgGe

Single crystals of the heavy-fermion compound YbAgGe have been studied by neutron scattering. The magnetic ordering occurring below T1=0.5 K is characterized by a commensurate propagation vector k=(1/3,0,1/3) and the moments in the basal plane of the hexagonal structure. The dynamic magnetic susceptibility is dominated by quasielastic spin fluctuations with a characteristic energy Gamma of the order of 1 meV. The spins fluctuate predominantly in the basal plane. No spin-wave excitations are observed in the magnetically ordered phase. Below the Kondo temperature, TK=20 K, Gamma shows a strong q dependence for wave vectors along the c* direction, but is q-independent in the basal plane. Gamma shows initially a rapid increase with temperature T at the antiferromagnetic zone center, but follows a standard sqrt(T) law for other q values and for T>TK in general. These observations classify YbAgGe as a well-behaved heavy-fermion compound with a particular q-dependence of the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, possibly related to the geometrical frustration of the Yb3+ ions.

Phase diagram of heavy fermion systems

The Meccano of heavy fermion systems is shown on different cases going from anomalous monochalcogenides to cerium intermetallic compounds with special focus on the ideal case of the CeRu2Si2 series. Discussion is made in the frame of the interplay between valence, electronic structure (Fermi surface), and magnetism. The nice tools given by the temperature, the pressure, and the magnetic field allow to explore different ground states as well as the slow downhill ''race'' before reaching a Fermi liquid finish line at very low temperature. Experimentally, the Gr"uneisen parameter i.e. the ratio of the thermal expansion by the specific heat is a coloured magic number; its temperature, pressure, and magnetic field dependence is a deep disclosure of competing hierarchies and the conversion of this adaptive matter to external responses.

Itinerant metamagnetism of CeRu2Si2 : bringing out the dead. Comparison with the new Sr3Ru2O7 case

Focus is given on the macroscopic and microscopic experimental works realized during a decade on the clear case of itinerant metamagnetism in the heavy fermion paramagnetic compound CeRu2Si2 . Emphasis is made on the feedback between the band structure, the exchange coupling and the lattice instability. Sweeps in magnetic field, pressure and temperature feel the pseudogap of this strongly correlated electronic system as well as its equivalent CeRu2Ge2 at a fictitious negative pressure. Some mysteries persist as the complete observation of the FS above the metamagnetic field HM and the detection of the dynamical ferromagnetic fluctuation near HM. The novelty of the bilayer ruthenate Sr3Ru2O7 is discussed by comparison. Despite differences in spin and electronic dimensionality many common trends emerge.

Magnetic order and spin-waves in the quasi-1D S=1/2 antiferromagnet ${\bf BaCu_{2}Si_{2}O_{7}}$

Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering were used to study the ordered phase of the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnet ${\rm BaCu_{2}Si_{2}O_{7}}$. The previously proposed model for the low-temperature magnetic structure was confirmed. Spin wave dispersion along several reciprocal-space directions was measured and inter-chain, as well as in-chain exchange constants were determined. A small gap in the spin wave spectrum was observed and attributed to magnetic anisotropy effects. The results are discussed in comparison with existing theories for weakly-coupled quantum spin chain antiferromagnets.
