Higher order smooth positon and breather positon solutions of an extended nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the cubic and quartic nonlinearity

We construct certain higher order smooth positon and breather positon solutions of an extended nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the cubic and quartic nonlinearity. We utilize the generalized Darboux transformation method to construct the aforementioned solutions. The three well-known equations, namely nonlinear Schrödinger equation, Hirota equation, and generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, are sub-cases of the considered extended nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The solutions which we construct are more general. We analyze how the positon and breather positon solutions of the constituent equations get modified by the higher order nonlinear and dispersion terms. Our results show that the width and direction of the smooth positon and breather-positon solutions are highly sensitive to higher-order effects. Further, we carryout an asymptotic analysis to predict the behaviour of positons. We observe that during collision positons exhibit a time-dependent phase shift. We also present the exact expression of time-dependent phase shift of positons. Finally, we show that this time-dependent phase shift is directly proportional to the higher order nonlinear and dispersion parameters.

Instability of single- and double-periodic waves in the fourth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We compute the instability rate for single- and double-periodic wave solutions of a fourth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The single- and double-periodic solutions of a fourth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation are derived in terms of Jacobian elliptic functions such as $dn$, $cn$, and $sn$. From the spectral problem, we compute Lax and stability spectrum of single-periodic waves. We then calculate the instability rate of single-periodic waves (periodic in the spatial variable). We also obtain the Lax and stability spectrum of double-periodic wave solutions for different values of the elliptic modulus parameter. We also highlight certain novel features exhibited by the considered system. We then compute instability rate for two families of double-periodic wave solutions of the considered equation for different values of the system parameter. Our results reveal that the instability growth rate is higher for the double-periodic waves due to the fourth-order dispersion parameter when compared to single-periodic waves.

Ghost-Stochastic Resonance in a Unidirectionally Coupled and Small-World Networks

Ghost-stochastic resonance is a noise-induced resonance at a missing fundamental frequency in the input signal. In this paper we investigate the features of ghost-stochastic resonance in a unidirectionally coupled network and small-world network with each unit being bistable Bellows map. In the one-way coupled network we apply a multi-frequency signal $(1/n_{\mathrm{f}}) \sum_{j=1}^{n_{\mathrm{f}}} \cos (ω_{j}n)$, $n=0,1,2,\cdots$, $ω_{j}=(k+j-1)ω_{0}$, with $k$ being an integer $\ge2$ (without the fundamental frequency $ω_{0}$) and noise to first unit only. We show the occurrence of resonance and undamped signal propagation for coupling strength above a certain critical value. The response amplitude shows sigmoidal function type variation with unit number. We report the effect of coupling strength $δ$, $k$ and $n_{\mathrm{f}}$ on the response amplitude. In the small-world network randomness in the connectivity topology is described by the probability $p$ of rewiring of units in a ring type regular network where all the units are subjected to noise and multi-frequency signal. We present the influence of $p$ and the coupling strength on the probability distribution of response amplitude $Q$ of various units, $\langle Q \rangle$ and the maximum value of $Q$.

Multiple resonance and anti-resonance in coupled Duffing oscillators

We investigate the resonance behaviour in a system composed by n-coupled Duffing oscillators where only the first oscillator is driven by a periodic force, assuming a nearest neighbour coupling. We have derived the frequency-response equations for a system composed of two-coupled oscillators by using a theoretical approach. Interestingly, the frequency-response curve displays two resonance peaks and one anti-resonance. A theoretical prediction of the response amplitudes of two oscillators closely match with the numerically computed amplitudes. We analyse the effect of the coupling strength on the resonance and anti-resonance frequencies and the response amplitudes at these frequencies. For the n-coupled oscillators system, in general, there are n-resonant peaks and (n-1) anti-resonant peaks. For large values of n, except for the first resonance, other resonant peaks are weak due to linear damping. The resonance behaviours observed in the n-coupled Duffing oscillators are also realized in an electronic analog circuit simulation of the equations. Understanding the role of coupling and system size has the potential applications in music, structural engineering, power systems, biological networks, electrical and electronic systems.

Vibrational Resonance in the Duffing Oscillator with Distributed Time-Delayed Feedback

We analyze the vibrational resonance in the Duffing oscillator system in the presence of (i) a gamma distributed time-delayed feedback and (ii) integrative time-delayed (uniformly distributed time delays over a finite interval) feedback. Particularly, applying a theoretical procedure we obtain an expression for the response amplitude $Q$ at the low-frequency of the driving biharmonic force. For both double-well potential and single-well potential cases we are able to identify the regions in parameter space where either (i) two resonances, (ii) a single resonance or (iii) no resonance occur. Theoretically predicted values of $Q$ and the values of a control parameter at which resonance occurs are in good agreement with our numerical simulation. The analysis shows a strong influence of both types of time-delayed feedback on vibrational resonance.

Enhanced signal propagation in a network with unidirectional and random couplings

We investigate the effect of unidirectional regular and random couplings of units in a network on stochastic resonance. For simplicity we choose the units as Bellows map with bistability. In a regular network we apply a weak periodic signal and noise to first unit only. Above certain coupling strength undamped and enhanced signal propagation takes place. Resonance occurs at the same value of noise intensity in all units. The response amplitude displays sigmoidal function type variation with unit number. When all the units are driven by the weak periodic force and noise oscillatory variation of response amplitude with unit number occurs. In the network with random coupling all the units are subjected to periodic force and noise. In this case the value of noise intensity at which resonance occurs and the corresponding value of average response amplitude increases nonlinearly with the number of units wired. Numerical simulation with multiple couplings shows that in both type of networks single coupling is sufficient to realize a great improvement in stochastic resonance and signal propagation.

Signal amplification by unidirectional coupling of oscillators

We report our investigation on the input signal amplification in unidirectionally coupled monostable Duffing oscillators in one- and two-dimensions with first oscillator alone driven by a weak periodic signal. Applying a perturbation theory we obtain a set of nonlinear equations for the response amplitude of the coupled oscillators. We identify the conditions for undamped signal propagation with enhanced amplitude through the coupled oscillators. When the number of oscillators increases the response amplitude approaches a limiting value. We determine this limiting value. Also, we analyse the signal amplification in the coupled oscillators in two-dimensions with fraction of oscillators chosen randomly for coupling and forcing.

Vibrational and Ghost-Vibrational Resonances in A Modified Chua's Circuit Model Equation

The role of the number of breakpoints $N$ in the sawtooth form of the characteristic function in the modified Chua's circuit model equation on vibrational and ghost-vibrational resonances is investigated in this paper. To observe vibrational resonance the system should be driven by two periodic forces of frequencies $ω$ and $Ω$, with $Ω\ggω$. Resonance occurs at the frequency $ω$ when the amplitude of the high-frequency force is varied. When the system is subjected to an input signal containing multi-frequencies which are higher-order of a certain (missing) fundamental frequency, then a resonance at the missing fundamental frequency is induced by the high-frequency input signal and is called ghost-vibrational resonance. In both types of resonances, the number of resonances is $N$ and hysteresis occurs in each resonance region. There are some similarities and differences in these two resonance phenomena. We report in detail the influence of the role of number of breakpoints $N$ on the features of vibrational and ghost-vibrational resonances.

Experimental evidence for vibrational resonance and enhanced signal transmission in Chua's circuit

We consider a single Chua's circuit and a system of a unidirectionally coupled n-Chua's circuits driven by a biharmonic signal with two widely different frequencies ωand Ω, where Ω>> ω. We show experimental evidence for vibrational resonance in the single Chua's circuit and undamped signal propagation of a low-frequency signal in the system of n-coupled Chua's circuits where only the first circuit is driven by the biharmonic signal. In the single circuit, we illustrate the mechanism of vibrational resonance and the influence of the biharmonic signal parameters on the resonance. In the n(= 75)-coupled Chua's circuits enhanced propagation of low-frequency signal is found to occur for a wide range of values of the amplitude of the high-frequency input signal and coupling parameter. The response amplitude of the ith circuit increases with i and attains a saturation. Moreover, the unidirectional coupling is found to act as a low-pass filter.

Vibrational resonance in groundwater-dependent plant ecosystems

We report the phenomenon of vibrational resonance in a single species and a two species models of groundwater-dependent plant ecosystems with a biharmonic oscillation (with two widely different frequencies ωand Ω, Ω>> ω) of the water table depth. In these two systems, the response amplitude of the species biomass shows multiple resonances with different mechanisms. The resonance occurs at both low- and high-frequencies of the biharmonic force. In the single species bistable system, the resonance occurs at discrete values of the amplitude g of the high-frequency component of the water table. Furthermore, the best synchronization of biomass and its carrying capacity with the biharmonic force occurs at the resonance. In the two species excitable and time-delay model, the response amplitude (Q) profile shows several plateau regions of resonance, where the period of evolution of the species biomass remains the same and the value of Q is inversely proportional to it. The response amplitude is highly sensitive to the time-delay parameter τand shows two distinct sequences of resonance intervals with a decreasing amplitude with τ.

Vibrational Resonance in the Morse Oscillator

We investigate the occurrence of vibrational resonance in both classical and quantum mechanical Morse oscillators driven by a biharmonic force. The biharmonic force consists of two forces of widely different frequencies ωand Ωwith Ω>>ω. In the damped and biharmonically driven classical Morse oscillator applying a theoretical approach we obtain an analytical expression for the response amplitude at the low-frequency ω. We identify the conditions on the parameters for the occurrence of the resonance. The system shows only one resonance and moreover at resonance the response amplitude is 1/(dω) where d is the coefficient of linear damping. When the amplitude of the high-frequency force is varied after resonance the response amplitude does not decay to zero but approaches a nonzero limiting value. We have observed that vibrational resonance occurs when the sinusoidal force is replaced by a square-wave force. We also report the occurrence of resonance and anti-resonance of transition probability of quantum mechanical Morse oscillator in the presence of the biharmonic external field.

Statistical measures and diffusion dynamics in a modified Chua's circuit equation with multi-scroll attractors

In this paper the focus is set on a modified Chua's circuit model equation with saw-tooth function in place of piece-wise linear function of Chua's circuit displaying multi-scroll chaotic attractors. We study the characteristic properties of first passage times ($t_\mathrm{FPT}$s) to $n$th scroll chaotic attractor, residence times ($t_\mathrm{RT}$s) on a scroll attractor and returned times ($t_\mathrm{RET}$s) to the middle-scroll attractor. $t_\mathrm{FPT}$s exhibit a series of Gaussian-like distribution followed by a long tail continuous distribution. $t_\mathrm{RT}$s and $t_\mathrm{RET}$s show completely discrete distribution. Power-law variation of mean values of $t_\mathrm{FPT}$s, $t_\mathrm{RT}$s and $t_\mathrm{RET}$s with a control parameter is found. On the other hand, mean values of $t_\mathrm{FPT}$s and $t_\mathrm{RET}$s have linear dependence with the number of the scroll attractors for fixed values of the control parameter. For the system with infinite scroll chaotic attractors normal diffusive motion occurs. In the normal diffusion process the mean square displacement grows linearly with time.
