Mini array of quantum Hall devices based on epitaxial graphene

Series connection of four quantum Hall effect (QHE) devices based on epitaxial graphene films was studied for realization of a quantum resistance standard with an up-scaled value. The tested devices showed quantum Hall plateaux RH,2 at filling factor i = 2 starting from relatively low magnetic field (between 4 T and 5 T) when temperature was 1.5 K. Precision measurements of quantized Hall resistance of four QHE devices connected by triple series connections and external bonding wires were done at B = 7 T and T = 1.5 K using a commercial precision resistance bridge with 50 microA current through the QHE device. The results showed that the deviation of the quantized Hall resistance of the series connection of four graphene-based QHE devices from the expected value of 4*RH,2 = 2h/e^2 was smaller than the relative standard uncertainty of the measurement (< 1*10^-7) limited by the used resistance bridge.

On the Nonrelativistic 2D Purely Magnetic Supersymmetric Pauli Operator

The Complete Manifold of Ground State Eigenfunctions for the Purely Magnetic 2D Pauli Operator is considered as a by-product of the new reduction found by the present authors few years ago for the Algebrogeometric Inverse Spectral Data (i.e. Riemann Surfaces and Divisors). This reduction is associated with the (2+1) Soliton Hierarhy containing a 2D analog of the famous "Burgers System". This article contains also exposition of the previous works made since 1980 including the first topological ideas in the space of quasimomenta. We present here also new results dedicated to the self-adjoint boundary problems for Pauli Operator. The 2D zero level "nonspectral" Bloch-Floquet functions give discrete points of additional spectrum similar to the "boundary states" of finite-gap 1D potentials in the gaps.

Fabrication and Study of Large Area QHE Devices Based on Epitaxial Graphene

Quantum Hall effect (QHE) devices based on epitaxial graphene films grown on SiC were fabricated and studied for development of the QHE resistance standard. The graphene-metal contacting area in the Hall devices has been improved and fabricated using a double metalization process. The tested devices had an initial carrier concentration of (0.6 - 10)*10^11 1/cm^2 and showed half-integer quantum Hall effect at a relatively low (3 T) magnetic field. Application of the photochemical gating method and annealing of the sample provides a convenient way for tuning the carrier density to the optimum value. Precision measurements of the quantum Hall resistance (QHR) in graphene and GaAs devices at moderate magnetic field strengths (<7 T) showed a relative agreement within 6*10^-9.

GraphState - a tool for graph identification and labelling

We present python libraries for Feynman graphs manipulation. The key feature of these libraries is usage of generalization of graph representation offered by B. G. Nickel et al. In this approach graph is represented in some unique 'canonical' form that depends only on its combinatorial type. The uniqueness of graph representation gives an efficient way for isomorphism finding, searching for subgraphs and other graph manipulation tasks. Though offered libraries were originally designed for Feynman graphs, they might be useful for more general graph problems.

Spectral Meromorphic Operators and Nonlinear Systems

We study here class of 1D spectral-meromorphic (s-meromorphic) OD operators $L=\partial_x^n+\sum_{n-2\geq i\geq 0}a_{n-2-i}\partial_x^i$ with meromorphic coefficients $a_j$ near $x\in R$ such that all eigenfunctions $Lψ=αψ$ are $x$--meromorphic near $x\in R$ for all $α$. Symmetric $s$-meromorphic operators are self-adjoint with respect to indefinite inner product well-defined for some special spaces of singular functions. In particular, all algebraic operators $L$--i.e. operators entering Burchnall-Chaundy-Krichever (BChK) rank one commutative rings -- are s-meromorphic. For KdV system corresponding algebraic operator $L=-\partial_x^2+u(x,t)$ is called singular finite gap, singular soliton or algebrogeometric Schrodinger operator. This special case was already studied by the present authors in the recent works.

Towards a Graphene-Based Quantum Impedance Standard

Precision measurements of the quantum Hall resistance with alternating current (ac) in the kHz range were performed on epitaxial graphene in order to assess its suitability as a quantum standard of impedance. The quantum Hall plateaus measured with alternating current were found to be flat within one part in 10^7. This is much better than for plain GaAs quantum Hall devices and shows that the magnetic-flux-dependent capacitive ac losses of the graphene device are less critical. The observed frequency dependence of about -8x10^-8/kHz is comparable in absolute value to the positive frequency dependence of plain GaAs devices, but the negative sign is attributed to stray capacitances which we believe can be minimized by a careful design of the graphene device. Further improvements thus may lead to a simpler and more user-friendly quantum standard for both resistance and impedance.

Autler-Townes splitting in a three-dimensional transmon superconducting qubit

We have observed the Autler-Townes doublet in a superconducting Al/AlOx/Al transmon qubit that acts as an artificial atom embedded in a three-dimensional Cu microwave cavity at a temperature of 22 mK. Using pulsed microwave spectroscopy, the three lowest transmon levels are isolated, eliminating unwanted effects of higher qubit modes and cavity modes. The long coherence time (~40 us) of the transmon enables us to observe a clear Autler-Townes splitting at drive amplitudes much smaller than the transmon level anharmonicity (177 MHz). Three-level density matrix simulations with no free parameters provide excellent fits to the data. At maximum separation, the fidelity of a dark state achieved in this experiment is estimated to be 99.6-99.9%.

Decoherence in a Pair of Long-Lived Cooper-Pair Boxes

We have investigated the decoherence of quantum states in two Al/AlOx/Al Cooper-pair boxes coupled to lumped element superconducting LC resonators. At 25 mK, the first qubit had an energy relaxation time T1 that varied from 30 us to 200 us between 4 and 8 GHz and displayed an inverse correlation between T1 and the coupling to the microwave drive line. The Ramsey fringe decay times T2* were in the 200-500 ns range while the spin echo envelope decay times Techo varied from 2.4-3.3 us, consistent with 1/f charge noise with a high frequency cutoff of 0.2 MHz. A second Cooper-pair box qubit with similar parameters showed T1=4-30 us between 4-7.3 GHz, and that the T1 and the coupling were again inversely correlated. Although the lifetime of the second device was shorter than that of the first device, the dependence on coupling in both devices suggests that further reduction in coupling should lead to improved qubit performance.

Observation of Autler-Townes effect in a dispersively dressed Jaynes-Cummings system

Photon number splitting is observed in a transmon coupled to a superconducting quasi-lumped-element resonator in the strong dispersive limit. A thermal population of 5.474 GHz photons at an effective resonator temperature of T = 120mK results in a weak n = 1 photon peak along with the n = 0 photon peak in the qubit spectrum in the absence of a coherent drive on the resonator. Two-tone spectroscopy using independent coupler and probe tones reveals an Autler-Townes splitting in the thermal n = 1 photon peak. The observed effect is explained accurately using the four lowest levels of the dispersively dressed qubit-resonator system and compared to results from numerical simulations of the steady-state master equation for the coupled system.

Precision Quantum Hall Resistance Measurement on Epitaxial Graphene Device in Low Magnetic Field

Precision quantum Hall resistance (QHR) measurements were performed on large-area epitaxial graphene device at low magnetic fields (B = 2 T - 8 T) at temperature T = 1.5 K. Hall resistance was measured using Cryogenic Current Comparator resistance bridge with high biasing current Isd = 40 micro ampere. The results showed that at B = 8 T the relative deviation of Hall resistance from the expected quantized value h/2e2 is within experimental uncertainty of 3.5 parts in 108 and remained below 0.35 parts per million (ppm) down to B = 3 T.

Spectroscopy of a Cooper-Pair Box Coupled to a Two-Level System Via Charge and Critical Current

We report on the quadrupling of the transition spectrum of an Al/AlOx/Al Cooper-pair box (CPB) charge qubit in the 4.0-7.3 GHz frequency range. The qubit was coupled to a quasi-lumped element Al superconducting resonator and measured at a temperature of 25 mK. We obtained good matches between the observed spectrum and the spectra calculated from a model Hamiltonian containing two distinct low excitation energy two-level systems (TLS) coupled to the CPB. In our model, each TLS has a charge that tunnels between two sites in a local potential and induces a change in the CPB critical current. By fitting the model to the spectrum, we have extracted microscopic parameters of the fluctuators including the well asymmetry, tunneling rate, and a surprisingly large fractional change (30-40%) in the critical current (12 nA). This large change is consistent with a Josephson junction with a non-uniform tunnel barrier containing a few dominant conduction channels and a TLS that modulates one of them.

Decoupling a Cooper-pair box to enhance the lifetime to 0.2 ms

We present a circuit QED experiment in which a separate transmission line is used to address a quasi-lumped element superconducting microwave resonator which is in turn coupled to an Al/AlO$_{x}$/Al Cooper-pair box (CPB) charge qubit. In our measurements we find a strong correlation between the measured lifetime of the CPB and the coupling between the qubit and the transmission line. By monitoring perturbations of the resonator's 5.44 GHz resonant frequency, we have measured the spectrum, lifetime ($T_{1}$), Rabi, and Ramsey oscillations of the CPB at the charge degeneracy point while the CPB was detuned by up to 2.5 GHz . We find a maximum lifetime of the CPB was $T_{1} = 200\ μ$s for $f = 4$ to 4.5 GHz. Our measured $T_{1}$'s are consistent with loss due to coupling to the transmission line, spurious microwave circuit resonances, and a background decay rate on the order of $5\times 10^{3}$ s$^{-1}$ of unknown origin, implying that the loss tangent in the AlO$_{x}$ junction barrier must be less than about $4\times 10^{-8}$ at 4.5 GHz, about 4 orders of magnitude less than reported in larger area Al/AlO$_{x}$/Al tunnel junctions.

2D Schrodinger Operator, (2+1) Systems and New Reductions. The 2D Burgers Hierarchy and Inverse Problem Data

The Theory of (2+1) Systems based on 2D Schrodinger Operator was started by S.Manakov, B.Dubrovin, I.Krichever and S.Novikov in 1976. The Analog of Lax Pairs introduced by Manakov, has a form $L_t=[L,H]-fL$ ("The $L,H,f$-triples") where $L=\partial_x\partial_y+G\partial_y+S$ and $H,f$-some linear PDEs. Their Algebro-Geometric Solutions and therefore the full higher order hierarchies were constructed by B.Dubrovin, I.Krichever and S.Novikov. The Theory of 2D Inverse Spectral Problems for the Elliptic Operator $L$ with $x,y$ replaced by $z,\bar{z}$, was started by B.Dubrovin, I.Krichever and S.Novikov: The Inverse Spectral Problem Data are taken from the complex "Fermi-Curve" consisting of all Bloch-Floquet Eigenfunctions $Lψ=const$. Many interesting systems were found later. However, specific properties of the very first system, offered by Manakov for the verification of new method only, were not studied more than 10 years until B.Konopelchenko found in 1988 analogs of Backund Transformations for it. He pointed out on the "Burgers-Type Reduction". Indeed, the present authors quite recently found very interesting extensions, reductions and applications of that system both in the theory of nonlinear evolution systems (The Self-Adjoint and 2D Burgers Hierarhies were invented, and corresponding reductions of Inverse Problem Data found) and in the Spectral Theory of Important Physical Operators ("The Purely Magnetic 2D Pauli Operators"). We call this system GKMMN by the names of authors who studied it.

New Reductions and Nonlinear Systems for 2D Schrodinger Operators

New Completely Integrable (2+1)-System is studied. It is based on the so-called L-A-B-triples $L_t=[H,L]-fL$ where L is a 2D Schrodinger Operator. This approach was invented by S.Manakov and B.Dubrovin, I.Krichever, S.Novikov(DKN) in the works published in 1976. A nonstandard reduction for the 2D Schrodinger Operator (completely different from the one found by S.Novikov and A.Veselov in 1984) compatible with time dynamics of the new Nonlinear System, is studied here. It can be naturally treated as a 2D extension of the famous Burgers System. The Algebro-Geometric (AG) Periodic Solutions here are very specific and unusual (for general and reduced cases). The reduced system is linearizable like Burgers. However, the general one (and probably the reduced one also) certainly lead in the stationary AG case to the nonstandard examples of algebraic curves $Γ\subset W$ in the full complex 2D manifold of Bloch-Floquet functions W for the periodic elliptic 2D operator H where $Hψ(x,y,P)=λ(P)ψ(x,y,P),P\in Γ$. However, in the nontrivial case the operators are nonselfadjoint. A Conjecture is formulated that for the nontrivial selfadjoint elliptic 2D Schrodinger operators H with periodic coefficients The Whole 2D Complex Manifolds W cannot not contain any Zariski open part of algebraic curve $Γ$ except maybe one selected level $Hψ=const$ found in 1976 by DKN. Version 2 contains new results. It also corrects some non-accurate claims; in particular, the non-reduced system is non-linearizable in any trivial sense. In version 3 a misprint in the formulation of Theorem 1 was corrected.

On the Ground Level of Purely Magnetic Algebro-Geometric 2D Pauli Operator (spin 1/2)

Full manifold of the complex Bloch-Floquet eigenfunctions is investigated for the ground level of the purely magnetic 2D Pauli operators (equal to zero because of supersymmetry). Deep connection of it with the 2D analog of the "Burgers Nonlinear Hierarchy" plays fundamental role here. Everything is completely calculated for the broad class of Algebro-Geometric operators found in this work for this case. For the case of nonzero flux the ground states were found by Aharonov-Casher (1979) for the rapidly decreasing fields, and by Dubrovin-Novikov (1980) for the periodic fields. No Algebro-Geometric operators where known in the case of nonzero flux. For genus $g=1$ we found periodic operators with zero flux, singular magnetic fields and Bohm-Aharonov phenomenon. Our arguments imply that the delta-term really does not affect seriously the spectrum nearby of the ground state. For $g>1$ our theory requires to use only algebraic curves with selected point leading to the solutions elliptic in the variable $x$ for KdV and KP in order to get periodic magnetic fields. The algebro-geometric case of genus zero leads, in particular, to the slowly decreasing lump-like magnetic fields with especially interesting variety of ground states in the Hilbert Space $\cL_2(\bR^2)$.

Singular Finite-Gap Operators and Indefinite Metric

Many "real" inverse spectral data for periodic finite-gap operators (consisting of Riemann Surface with marked "infinite point", local parameter and divisors of poles) lead to operators with real but singular coefficients. These operators cannot be considered as self-adjoint in the ordinary (positive) Hilbert spaces of functions of x. In particular, it is true for the special case of Lame operators with elliptic potential $n(n+1)\wp(x)$ where eigenfunctions were found in XIX Century by Hermit. However, such Baker-Akhiezer (BA) functions present according to the ideas of works by Krichever-Novikov (1989), Grinevich-Novikov (2001) right analog of the Discrete and Continuous Fourier Bases on Riemann Surfaces. It turns out that these operators for the nonzero genus are symmetric in some indefinite inner product, described in this work. The analog of Continuous Fourier Transform is an isometry in this inner product. In the next work with number II we will present exposition of the similar theory for Discrete Fourier Series
