A Comparative Study of Algorithms for Intelligent Traffic Signal Control

In this paper, methods have been explored to effectively optimise traffic signal control to minimise waiting times and queue lengths, thereby increasing traffic flow. The traffic intersection was first defined as a Markov Decision Process, and a state representation, actions and rewards were chosen. Simulation of Urban MObility (SUMO) was used to simulate an intersection and then compare a Round Robin Scheduler, a Feedback Control mechanism and two Reinforcement Learning techniques - Deep Q Network (DQN) and Advantage Actor-Critic (A2C), as the policy for the traffic signal in the simulation under different scenarios. Finally, the methods were tested on a simulation of a real-world intersection in Bengaluru, India.

Optimization of Image Embeddings for Few Shot Learning

In this paper we improve the image embeddings generated in the graph neural network solution for few shot learning. We propose alternate architectures for existing networks such as Inception-Net, U-Net, Attention U-Net, and Squeeze-Net to generate embeddings and increase the accuracy of the models. We improve the quality of embeddings created at the cost of the time taken to generate them. The proposed implementations outperform the existing state of the art methods for 1-shot and 5-shot learning on the Omniglot dataset. The experiments involved a testing set and training set which had no common classes between them. The results for 5-way and 10-way/20-way tests have been tabulated.

Panel flutter characteristics of sandwich plates with CNT reinforced face sheets using an accurate higher-order theory

In this paper, the flutter characteristics of sandwich panels with carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced face sheets are investigated using QUAD-8 shear flexible element developed based on higher-order structural theory. The formulation accounts for the realistic variation of the displacements through the thickness, the possible discontinuity in the slope at the interface, and the thickness stretch affecting the transverse deflection. The in-plane and rotary inertia terms are also included in the formulation. The first-order high Mach number approximation to linear potential flow theory is employed for evaluating the aerodynamic pressure. The solutions of the complex eigenvalue problem, developed based on Lagrange's equation of motion are obtained using the standard method for finding the eigenvalues. The accuracy of the present formulation is demonstrated considering the problems for which solutions are available. A detailed numerical study is carried out to bring out the efficacy of the higher-order model over the first-order theory and also to examine the influence of the volume fraction of the CNT, core-to-face sheet thickness, the plate thickness and the aspect ratio, damping and the temperature on the flutter boundaries and the associated vibration modes.

A parametric study on the buckling of functionally graded material plates with internal discontinuities using the partition of unity method

In this paper, the effect of local defects, viz., cracks and cutouts on the buckling behaviour of functionally graded material plates subjected to mechanical and thermal load is numerically studied. The internal discontinuities, viz., cracks and cutouts are represented independent of the mesh within the framework of the extended finite element method and an enriched shear flexible 4-noded quadrilateral element is used for the spatial discretization. The properties are assumed to vary only in the thickness direction and the effective properties are estimated using the Mori-Tanaka homogenization scheme. The plate kinematics is based on the first order shear deformation theory. The influence of various parameters, viz., the crack length and its location, the cutout radius and its position, the plate aspect ratio and the plate thickness on the critical buckling load is studied. The effect of various boundary conditions is also studied. The numerical results obtained reveal that the critical buckling load decreases with increase in the crack length, the cutout radius and the material gradient index. This is attributed to the degradation in the stiffness either due to the presence of local defects or due to the change in the material composition.

Analysis of functionally graded material plates using triangular elements with cell-based smoothed discrete shear gap method

In this paper, a cell based smoothed finite element method with discrete shear gap technique is employed to study the static bending, free vibration, mechanical and thermal buckling behaviour of functionally graded material (FGM) plates. The plate kinematics is based on the first order shear deformation theory and the shear locking is suppressed by a discrete shear gap method. The shear correction factors are evaluated by employing the energy equivalence principle. The material property is assumed to be temperature dependent and graded only in the thickness direction. The effective properties are computed by using the Mori-Tanaka homogenization method. The accuracy of the present formulation is validated against available solutions. A systematic parametric study is carried out to examine the influence the gradient index, the plate aspect ratio, skewness of the plate and the boundary conditions on the global response of the FGM plates. The effect of a centrally located circular cutout on the global response is also studied.

Static bending and free vibration of cross ply laminated composite plates using NURBS based finite element method and unified formulation

This paper presents an effective formulation to study the response of laminated composites based on isogeometric approach (IGA) and Carrera unified formulation (CUF). The IGA utilizes the non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) functions which allows to construct higher order smooth functions with less computational effort. The static bending and the free vibration of thin and moderately thick laminates plates are studied. The present approach also suffers from shear locking when lower order functions are employed and the shear locking is suppressed by introducing a modification factor. The combination of the IGA with the CUF allows a very accurate prediction of the field variables. The effectiveness of the formulation is demonstrated through numerical examples.

Supersonic flutter analysis of flat composite panels by unified formulation

In this paper, the linear flutter characteristics of laminated composite flat panels immersed in a supersonic flow is investigated using field consistent elements within the framework of unified formulation. The influence of the aerodynamic damping on the supersonic flutter characteristics of flat composite panels is also investigated. The aerodynamic force is evaluated using two-dimensional static aerodynamic approximation for high supersonic flow. Numerical results are presented for laminated composites that bring out the influence of the flow angle, the boundary conditions, the plate thickness and the plate aspect ratio on the flutter characteristics.

Supersonic flutter analysis of thin cracked functionally graded material plates

In this paper, the flutter behaviour of simply supported square functionally graded material plates immersed in a supersonic flow is studied. An enriched 4-noded quadrilateral element based on field consistency approach is used for this study and the crack is modelled independent of the underlying mesh. The material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent and graded only in the thickness direction. The effective material properties are estimated using the rule of mixtures. The formulation is based on the first order shear deformation theory and the shear correction factors are evaluated employing the energy equivalence principle. The influence of the crack length, the crack orientation, the flow angle and the gradient index on the aerodynamic pressure and the frequency are numerically studied. The results obtained here reveal that the critical frequency and the critical pressure decreases with increase in crack length and it is minimum when the crack is aligned to the flow angle.

Linear free flexural vibration of cracked functionally graded plates in thermal environment

In this paper, the linear free flexural vibrations of functionally graded material plates with a through center crack is studied using an 8-noded shear flexible element. The material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent and graded in the thickness direction. The effective material properties are estimated using the Mori-Tanaka homogenization scheme. The formulation is developed based on first-order shear deformation theory. The shear correction factors are evaluated employing the energy equivalence principle. The variation of the plates natural frequency is studied considering various parameters such as the crack length, plate aspect ratio, skew angle, temperature, thickness and boundary conditions. The results obtained here reveal that the natural frequency of the plate decreases with increase in temperature gradient, crack length and gradient index.

Natural frequencies of cracked functionally graded material plates by the extended finite element method

In this paper, the linear free flexural vibration of cracked functionally graded material plates is studied using the extended finite element method. A 4-noded quadrilateral plate bending element based on field and edge consistency requirement with 20 degrees of freedom per element is used for this study. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of simply supported and clamped square and rectangular plates are computed as a function of gradient index, crack length, crack orientation and crack location. The effect of thickness and influence of multiple cracks is also studied.
