Dark Matter interpretation of low energy IceCube MESE excess

The 2-years MESE IceCube events show a slightly excess in the energy range 10-100 TeV with a maximum local statistical significance of 2.3$σ$, once a hard astrophysical power-law is assumed. A spectral index smaller than 2.2 is indeed suggested by multi-messenger studies related to $p$-$p$ sources and by the recent IceCube analysis regarding 6-years up-going muon neutrinos. In the present paper, we propose a two-components scenario where the extraterrestrial neutrinos are explained in terms of an astrophysical power-law and a Dark Matter signal. We consider both decaying and annihilating Dark Matter candidates with different final states (quarks and leptons) and different halo density profiles. We perform a likelihood-ratio analysis that provides a statistical significance up to 3.9$σ$ for a Dark Matter interpretation of the IceCube low energy excess.

Dirac neutrinos from flavor symmetry

We present a model where Majorana neutrino mass terms are forbidden by the flavor symmetry group Delta(27). Neutrinos are Dirac fermions and their masses arise in the same way as that of the charged fermions, due to very small Yukawa couplings. The model fits current neutrino oscillation data and correlates the octant of the atmospheric angle with the magnitude of the lightest neutrino mass, with maximal mixing excluded for any neutrino mass

The Cabibbo angle as a universal seed for quark and lepton mixings

A model-independent ansatz to describe lepton and quark mixing in a unified way is suggested based upon the Cabibbo angle. In our framework neutrinos mix in a "Bi-Large" fashion, while the charged leptons mix as the "down-type" quarks do. In addition to the standard Wolfenstein parameters (lambda, A) two other free parameters are needed to specify the physical lepton mixing matrix. Through this simple assumption one makes specific predictions for the atmospheric angle as well as leptonic CP violation in good agreement with current observations.

Bilarge Neutrino Mixing and Abelian Flavor Symmetry

We explore two bilarge neutrino mixing anz$\ddot{a}$tze within the context of Abelian flavor symmetry theories: ($\mathrm{\tt BL_1}$) $\sinθ_{12}\simλ$, $\sinθ_{13}\simλ$, $\sinθ_{23}\simλ$, and ($\mathrm{\tt BL_2}$) $\sinθ_{12}\simλ$, $\sinθ_{13}\simλ$, $\sinθ_{23}\sim 1-λ$. The first pattern is proposed by two of us and is favored if the atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$ lies in the first octant, while the second one is preferred for the second octant of $θ_{23}$. In order to reproduce the second texture, we find that the flavor symmetry should be $U(1)\times Z_m$, while for the first pattern the flavor symmetry should be extended to $U(1)\times Z_m\times Z_n$ with $m$ and $n$ of different parity. Explicit models for both mixing patterns are constructed based on the flavor symmetries $U(1)\times Z_3\times Z_4$ and $U(1)\times Z_2$. The models are extended to the quark sector within the framework of SU(5) grand unified theory in order to give a successful description of quark and lepton masses and mixing simultaneously. Phenomenological implications are discussed.

Bilinear R-parity violation with flavor symmetry

Bilinear R-parity violation (BRPV) provides the simplest intrinsically supersymmetric neutrino mass generation scheme. While neutrino mixing parameters can be probed in high energy accelerators, they are unfortunately not predicted by the theory. Here we propose a model based on the discrete flavor symmetry $A_4$ with a single R-parity violating parameter, leading to (i) correct Cabbibo mixing given by the Gatto-Sartori-Tonin formula, and a successful unification-like b-tau mass relation, and (ii) a correlation between the lepton mixing angles $θ_{13}$ and $θ_{23}$ in agreement with recent neutrino oscillation data, as well as a (nearly) massless neutrino, leading to absence of neutrinoless double beta decay.

Flavor origin of R-parity

Proton stability is guaranteed in the MSSM by assuming a discrete symmetry, R-parity. However, there are additional R-parity conserving higher dimensional operators which violate lepton and baryon numbers and induce fast proton decay. Here we study the possibility that all renormalizable, as well as the most dangerous non-renormalizable, R-parity violating operators are forbidden by a flavor symmetry, providing a common origin for fermion mixing and proton and dark matter stability. We propose a specific model based on the Delta(27) discrete symmetry.

Neutrino mixing with revamped A4 flavour symmetry

We suggest a minimal extension of the simplest A4 flavour model that can induce a nonzero theta13 value, as required by recent neutrino oscillation data from reactors and accelerators. The predicted correlation between the atmospheric mixing angle theta23 and the magnitude of theta13 leads to an allowed region substantially smaller than indicated by neutrino oscillation global fits. Moreover, the scheme correlates CP violation in neutrino oscillations with the octant of the atmospheric mixing parameter theta23 in such a way that, for example, maximal mixing necessarily violates CP. We briefly comment on other phenomenological features of the model.

Quark-Lepton Mass Relation and CKM mixing in an A4 Extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

An interesting mass relation between down type quarks and charged leptons has been recently predicted within a supersymmetric SU(3)_c \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y model based on the A4 flavor symmetry. Here we propose a simple extension which provides an adequate full description of the quark sector. By adding a pair of vector-like up-quarks we show how the CKM entries Vub, Vcb, Vtd and Vts arise from deviations of the unitarity. We perform an analysis including the most relevant observables in the quark sector, such as oscillations and rare decays of Kaons, Bd and Bs mesons. In the lepton sector, model predicts an inverted hierarchy for the neutrino masses leading to a potentially observable rate of neutrinoless double beta decay.

Quark-Lepton Mass Relation in a Realistic A4 Extension of the Standard Model

We propose a realistic A4 extension of the Standard Model involving a particular quark-lepton mass relation, namely that the ratio of the third family mass to the geometric mean of the first and second family masses are equal for down-type quarks and charged leptons. This relation, which is approximately renormalization group invariant, is usually regarded as arising from the Georgi-Jarlskog relations, but in the present model there is no unification group or supersymmetry. In the neutrino sector we propose a simple modification of the so called Zee-Wolfenstein mass matrix pattern which allows an acceptable reactor angle along with a deviation of the atmospheric and solar angles from their bi-maximal values. Quark masses, mixing angles and CP violation are well described by a numerical fit.

Theories relating baryon asymmetry and dark matter: A mini review

The nature of dark matter and the origin of the baryon asymmetry are two of the deepest mysteries of modern particle physics. In the absence of hints regarding a possible solution to these mysteries, many approaches have been developed to tackle them simultaneously leading to very diverse and rich models. We give a short review where we describe the general features of some of these models and an overview on the general problem. We also propose a diagrammatic notation to label the different models.

WIMP dark matter as radiative neutrino mass messenger

The minimal seesaw extension of the Standard SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) Model requires two electroweak singlet fermions in order to accommodate the neutrino oscillation parameters at tree level. Here we consider a next to minimal extension where light neutrino masses are generated radiatively by two electroweak fermions: one singlet and one triplet under SU(2). These should be odd under a parity symmetry and their mixing gives rise to a stable weakly interactive massive particle (WIMP) dark matter candidate. For mass in the GeV-TeV range, it reproduces the correct relic density, and provides an observable signal in nuclear recoil direct detection experiments. The fermion triplet component of the dark matter has gauge interactions, making it also detectable at present and near future collider experiments.

A new neutrino mass sum rule from inverse seesaw

A class of discrete flavor-symmetry-based models predicts constrained neutrino mass matrix schemes that lead to specific neutrino mass sum-rules (MSR). One of these implies in a lower bound on the effective neutrinoless double beta mass parameter, even for normal hierarchy neutrinos. Here we propose a new model based on the S4 flavor symmetry that leads to the new neutrino mass sum-rule and discuss how to generate a nonzero value for the reactor mixing angle indicated by recent experiments, and the resulting correlation with the solar mixing angle.

Bi-large neutrino mixing and the Cabibbo angle

Recent measurements of the neutrino mixing angles cast doubt on the validity of the so-far popular tri-bimaximal mixing ansatz. We propose a parametrization for the neutrino mixing matrix where the reactor angle seeds the large solar and atmospheric mixing angles, equal to each other in first approximation. We suggest such bi-large mixing pattern as a model building standard, realized when the leading order value of the reactor angle equals the Cabibbo angle.

Neutrino masses and mixing: a flavour symmetry roadmap

Over the last ten years tri-bimaximal mixing has played an important role in modeling the flavour problem. We give a short review of the status of flavour symmetry models of neutrino mixing. We concentrate on non-Abelian discrete symmetries, which provide a simple way to account for the TBM pattern. We discuss phenomenological implications such as neutrinoless double beta decay, lepton flavour violation as well as theoretical aspects such as the possibility to explain quarks and leptons within a common framework, such as grand unified models.

Predictive Discrete Dark Matter Model

Dark Matter stability can be achieved through a partial breaking of a flavor symmetry. In this framework we propose a type-II seesaw model where left-handed matter transforms nontrivially under the flavor group Delta(54), providing correlations between neutrino oscillation parameters, consistent with the recent Daya-Bay and RENO reactor angle measurements, as well as lower bounds for neutrinoless double beta decay. The dark matter phenomenology is provided by a Higgs-portal.

The reactor mixing angle and CP violation with two texture zeros in the light of T2K

We reconsider the phenomenological implications of two texture zeros in symmetric neutrino mass matrices in the light of the recent T2K result for the reactor angle and the new global analysis which gives also best fit values for the Dirac CP phase delta. The most important results of the analysis are: Among the viable cases classified by Frampton et al. only A1 and A2 predict the reactor mixing angle to be different from zero at 3 sigma. Furthermore these two cases are compatible only with a normal mass spectrum in the allowed region for the reactor angle. At the best fit value A1 and A2 predict 0.024 >= sin^2(theta13) >= 0.012 and 0.014 <= sin^2(theta13) <= 0.032, respectively, where the bounds on the right and the left correspond to cos(delta)=-1 and cos(delta)=1, respectively. The cases B1, B2, B3 and B4 predict nearly maximal CP violation, i.e. cos(delta) is approximately zero.

Admixture of quasi-Dirac and Majorana neutrinos with tri-bimaximal mixing

We propose a realization of the so-called bimodal/schizophrenic model proposed recently. We assume S4, the permutation group of four objects as flavor symmetry giving tri-bimaximal lepton mixing at leading order. In these models the second massive neutrino state is assumed quasi-Dirac and the remaining neutrinos are Majorana states. In the case of inverse mass hierarchy, the lower bound on the neutrinoless double beta decay parameter m_ee is about two times that of the usual lower bound, within the range of sensitivity of the next generation of experiments.

Lepton flavor violation and non-unitary lepton mixing in low-scale type-I seesaw

Within low-scale seesaw mechanisms, such as the inverse and linear seesaw, one expects (i) potentially large lepton flavor violation (LFV) and (ii) sizeable non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI). We consider the interplay between the magnitude of non-unitarity effects in the lepton mixing matrix, and the constraints that follow from LFV searches in the laboratory. We find that NSI parameters can be sizeable, up to percent level in some cases, while LFV rates, such as that for μ-> e γ, lie within current limits, including the recent one set by the MEG collaboration. As a result the upcoming long baseline neutrino experiments offer a window of opportunity for complementary LFV and weak universality tests.

Model for T2K indication with maximal atmospheric angle and tri-maximal solar angle

Recently T2K gives hint in favor of large reactor angle. Most of the models, with tri-bimaximal mixing at the leading order, can not reproduce such a large mixing angle since they predict typically corrections for the reactor angle of the order of the Cabibbo angle. In this letter, we discuss the possibility to have large reactor angle within the T2K region with maximal atmospheric mixing angle and trimaximal solar mixing angle, through the deviation from tri-bimaximal. We derive the structure of neutrino mass matrix that leads to the large reactor angle leaving maximal atmospheric angle and trimaximal solar angle. It is shown that such a structure of neutrino mass matrix can arise in a model with S4 flavor symmetry.

Neutrino phenomenology and stable dark matter with A4

We present a model based on the A4 non-abelian discrete symmetry leading to a predictive five-parameter neutrino mass matrix and providing a stable dark matter candidate. We found an interesting correlation among the atmospheric and the reactor angles which predicts theta_23 ~ pi/4 for very small reactor angle and deviation from maximal atmospheric mixing for large theta_13. Only normal neutrino mass spectrum is possible and the effective mass entering the neutrinoless double beta decay rate is constrained to be |m_ee| > 4 10^{-4} eV.

Phenomenology of Dark Matter from A4 Flavor Symmetry

We investigate a model in which Dark Matter is stabilized by means of a Z2 parity that results from the same non-abelian discrete flavor symmetry which accounts for the observed pattern of neutrino mixing. In our A4 example the standard model is extended by three extra Higgs doublets and the Z2 parity emerges as a remnant of the spontaneous breaking of A4 after electroweak symmetry breaking. We perform an analysis of the parameter space of the model consistent with electroweak precision tests, collider searches and perturbativity. We determine the regions compatible with the observed relic dark matter density and we present prospects for detection in direct as well as indirect Dark Matter search experiments.

Relating quarks and leptons without grand-unification

In combination with supersymmetry, flavor symmetry may relate quarks with leptons, even in the absence of a grand-unification group. We propose an SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) model where both supersymmetry and the assumed A4 flavor symmetries are softly broken, reproducing well the observed fermion mass hierarchies and predicting: (i) a relation between down-type quarks and charged lepton masses, and (ii) a correlation between the Cabibbo angle in the quark sector, and the reactor angle characterizing CP violation in neutrino oscillations.

Stability of dark matter from the D4xZ2 flavor group

We study a model based on the dihedral group D4 in which the dark matter is stabilized by the interplay between a remnant Z2 symmetry, of the same spontaneously broken non-abelian group, and an auxiliary Z2 introduced to eliminate unwanted couplings in the scalar potential. In the lepton sector the model is compatible with normal hierarchy only and predicts a vanishing reactor mixing angle. Since m1=0, we also have a simple prediction for the effective mass in terms of the solar angle. There also exists a large portion of the model parameter space where the upper bounds on lepton flavor violating processes are not violated. We incorporate quarks in the same scheme finding that a description of the CKM mixing matrix is possible and that semileptonic K and D decays mediated by flavour changing neutral currents are under control.

An S4 model for quarks and leptons with maximal atmospheric angle

We consider a model for quark and lepton masses and mixings based on S4 flavor symmetry. The model contains six Higgs doublets where three of them give mass to the leptons and the other three gives mass to the quarks. Charged fermion and quark masses arise from renormalizable interactions while neutrino Majorana masses are generated through effective dimension five Weinberg operator. From the study of the minimization of the scalar potential we found a residual mu-tau symmetry in the neutrino sector predicting zero reactor angle and maximal atmospheric angle and for the quark sector we found a four-zero texture. We give a fit of the mass hierarchies and mixing angles in the quark sector.

preprint2010arXiv

Discrete dark matter

We propose a new motivation for the stability of dark matter (DM). We suggest that the same non-abelian discrete flavor symmetry which accounts for the observed pattern of neutrino oscillations, spontaneously breaks to a Z2 subgroup which renders DM stable. The simplest scheme leads to a scalar doublet DM potentially detectable in nuclear recoil experiments, inverse neutrino mass hierarchy, hence a neutrinoless double beta decay rate accessible to upcoming searches, while reactor angle equal to zero gives no CP violation in neutrino oscillations.

Fritzsch neutrino mass matrix from S3 symmetry

We present an extension of the Standard Model (SM) based on the discrete flavor symmetry S3 which gives a neutrino mass matrix with two-zero texture of Fritzsch-type and nearly diagonal charged lepton mass matrix. The model is compatible with the normal hierarchy only and predicts the sine squared of the reactor angle to be 0.01 at the best fit values of solar and atmospheric parameters and maximal leptonic CP violation.

The Hunt for New Physics at the Large Hadron Collider

The Large Hadron Collider presents an unprecedented opportunity to probe the realm of new physics in the TeV region and shed light on some of the core unresolved issues of particle physics. These include the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking, the origin of mass, the possible constituent of cold dark matter, new sources of CP violation needed to explain the baryon excess in the universe, the possible existence of extra gauge groups and extra matter, and importantly the path Nature chooses to resolve the hierarchy problem - is it supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Many models of new physics beyond the standard model contain a hidden sector which can be probed at the LHC. Additionally, the LHC will be a top factory and accurate measurements of the properties of the top and its rare decays will provide a window to new physics. Further, the LHC could shed light on the origin of neutralino masses if the new physics associated with their generation lies in the TeV region. Finally, the LHC is also a laboratory to test the hypothesis of TeV scale strings and D-brane models. An overview of these possibilities is presented in the spirit that it will serve as a companion to the Technical Design Reports (TDRs) by the particle detector groups ATLAS and CMS to facilitate the test of the new theoretical ideas at the LHC. Which of these ideas stands the test of the LHC data will govern the course of particle physics in the subsequent decades.

A4-based tri-bimaximal mixing within inverse and linear seesaw schemes

We consider tri-bimaximal lepton mixing within low-scale seesaw schemes where light neutrino masses arise from TeV scale physics, potentially accessible at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Two examples are considered, based on the A4 flavor symmetry realized within the inverse or the linear seesaw mechanisms. Both are highly predictive so that in both the light neutrino sector effectively depends only on three mass parameters and one Majorana phase, with no CP violation in neutrino oscillations. We find that the linear seesaw leads to a lower bound for neutrinoless double beta decay while the inverse seesaw does not. The models also lead to potentially sizeable decay rates for lepton flavor violating processes, tightly related by the assumed flavor symmetry.

An A4 model for lepton masses and mixings

We study an extension of the standard model based on the flavor symmetry A4 only. Neutrino Majorana mass terms arise from dimension five operator and charged lepton masses from renormalizable Yukawa couplings. We introduce three Higgs doublets that belong to one triplet irreducible representation of A4. We study the most general A4-invariant scalar potential and the phenomenological consequences of the model. We find that the reactor angle could be as large as 0.03, while the atmospheric mixing angle is close to maximal.

Phenomenological Consequences of See-Saw in S4 Based Models

It was proposed a flavour model based on the symmetry group S4, managing to describe fermion masses and mixings. The Weinberg operator has been used in order to provide the smallness of the neutrino masses, while a set of scalar fields, getting non-vanishing vacuum expectation values, spontaneously breaks down S4 and provides the Tri-Bimaximal pattern as the lepton mixing matrix. Restricting to this setting, in this paper we analyze possible origins for the effective terms: the type I See-Saw mechanism is the best known approach, but also the type II and III are discussed. The phenomenology related to these models is various and the next future experiments could in principle discriminate among these proposals. Furthermore, we compare our realizations to two relevant A4 based models, also predicting the Tri-Bimaximal lepton mixing, and we find that an analysis on the neutrinoless double beta decay parameters could distinguish among all these realizations. Furthermore a combined measurement of the effective mass and of the lightest neutrino mass could indicate in the next future which is the preferred flavour symmetry group. The introduction of new physics beyond the Standard Model, like heavy right-handed neutrinos, scalar triplets and fermion triplets, let us investigate on leptogenesis and this provides constraints in the realization of the models.

Tri-Bimaximal lepton mixing with A4 semidirect product Z2 x Z2 x Z2

We consider a model based on A4 semidirect product (Ze x Zmu x Ztau) flavor symmetry for Tri-Bimaximal lepton mixing with two scalar A4-triplets whose vacuum expectation values have the same alignment. Neutrino masses are generated through effective dimension five Weinberg operators. Charged leptons mass hierarchies are generated with an additional Froggatt-Nielsen U(1) flavor symmetry under which right-handed leptons are charged.

Modelling tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing

We model tri-bimaximal lepton mixing from first principles in a way that avoids the problem of the vacuum alignment characteristic of such models. This is achieved by using a softly broken A4 symmetry realized with an isotriplet fermion, also triplet under A4. No scalar A4-triplet is introduced. This represents one possible realization of general schemes characterized by the minimal set of either three or five physical parameters. In the three parameter versions mee vanishes, while in the five parameter schemes the absolute scale of neutrino mass, although not predicted, is related to the two Majorana phases. The model realization we discuss is potentially testable at the LHC through the peculiar leptonic decay patterns of the fermionic and scalar triplets.
