Generalizations of Snyder model to curved spaces

We consider generalizations of the Snyder algebra to a curved spacetime background with de Sitter symmetry. As special cases, we obtain the algebras of the Yang model and of triply special relativity. We discuss the realizations of these algebras in terms of canonical phase space coordinates, up to fourth order in the deformation parameters. In the case of triply special relativity we also find exact realization, exploiting its algebraic relation with the Snyder model.

Quantum mechanics of the extended Snyder model

We investigate a quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator based on the extended Snyder model. This realization of the Snyder model is constructed as a quantum phase space generated by $D$ spatial coordinates and $D(D-1)/2$ tensorial degrees of freedom, together with their conjugate momenta. The \coo obey nontrivial \cor and generate a noncommutative geometry, which admits nicer properties than the usual realization of the model, in particular giving rise to an associative star product. The spectrum of the harmonic oscillator is studied through the introduction of creation and annihilation operators. Some physical consequences of the introduction of the additional degrees of freedom are discussed.

Dyonic black holes in nonlinear electrodynamic from Kaluza-Klein theory with a Gauss-Bonnet term

Five-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory with an Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Lagrangian induces nonlinear corrections to the four-dimensional Maxwell equations, which however remain second order. Although these corrections do not have effect on the purely electric or magnetic monopole solutions for pointlike charges, they affect the dyonic solutions, smoothing the electric field at the origin for negative values of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant. We investigate these solutions in flat space, and then extend them in the presence of gravity, obtaining charged black hole solutions that generalize the Reissner-Nordström metric.

The Snyder-de Sitter Scalar $φ^4_{\star}$ Quantum Field Theory in D=2

We study the two-dimensional version of a quartic self-interacting quantum scalar field on a curved and noncommutative space (Snyder-de Sitter). We show that the model is renormalizable at the one-loop level and compute the beta functions of the related couplings. The renormalization group flow is then studied numerically, arriving at the conclusion that noncommutative-curved deformations can yield both relevant and irrelevant contributions to the one-loop effective action.

Unification of $κ$-Minkowski and extended Snyder spaces

In a recent paper, we have studied associative realizations of the noncommutative extended Snyder model, obtained by including the Lorentz generators (tensorial coordinates) and their conjugated momenta. In this paper, we extend this result to also incorporate a covariant realization of the $κ$-Poincaré spacetime. We obtain the coproduct, the associative star product and the twist in a Weyl-ordered realization, to first order in the noncommutativity parameters. This could help the construction of a quantum field theory based on this geometry.

Associative realizations of the extended Snyder model

The star product usually associated to the Snyder model of noncommutative geometry is nonassociative, and this property prevents the construction of a proper Hopf algebra. It is however possible to introduce a well-defined Hopf algebra by including the Lorentz generators and their conjugate momenta into the algebra. In this paper, we study the realizations of this extended Snyder spacetime, and obtain the coproduct and twist and the associative star product in a Weyl-ordered realization, to first order in the noncommutativity parameter. We then extend our results to the most general realizations of the extended Snyder spacetime, always up to first order.

Generalized relativistic kinematics in Poincaré-invariant models

Assuming the validity of the relativity principle, we discuss the implications on relativistic kinematics of a deformation of the Poincaré invariance that preserves the Poincaré algebra, and only modifies its action on phase space in a Lorentz-invariant way. We show that, in contrast to the case where the Poincaré algebra is deformed, the action of boosts on two-particle states is not affected, while the addition law of momenta is to a large extent arbitrary. We give some nontrivial examples of this arising from doubly special relativity and noncommutative geometry and show that Hopf-algebra methods give equivalent results.

Quantum mechanics on a curved Snyder space

We study the representations of the three-dimensional Euclidean Snyder-de Sitter algebra. This algebra generates the symmetries of a model admitting two fundamental scales (Planck mass and cosmological constant) and is invariant under the Born reciprocity for exchange of positions and momenta. Its representations can be obtained starting from those of the Snyder algebra, and exploiting the geometrical properties of the phase space, that can be identified with a Grassmannian manifold. Both the position and momentum operators turn out to have a discrete spectrum.

Spectrum of the hydrogen atom in Snyder space in a semiclassical approximation

We study the spectrum of the hydrogen atom in Snyder space in a semiclassical approximation based on a generalization of the Born-Sommerfeld quantization rule. While the corrections to the standard quantum mechanical spectrum arise at first order in the Snyder parameter for the $l=0$ states, they are of second order for $l\neq 0$. This can be understood as due to the different topology of the regions of integration in phase space.

Classical dynamics on curved Snyder space

We study the classical dynamics of a particle in nonrelativistic Snyder-de Sitter space. We show that for spherically symmetric systems, parametrizing the solutions in terms of an auxiliary time variable, which is a function only of the physical time and of the energy and angular momentum of the particles, one can reduce the problem to the equivalent one in classical mechanics. We also discuss a relativistic extension of these results, and a generalization to the case in which the algebra is realized in flat space.

Snyder dynamics in a Schwarzschild spacetime

We calculate the orbits of a particle in Schwarzschild spacetime, assuming that the dynamics is governed by a Snyder symplectic structure. With this assumption, the perihelion shift of the planets acquires an additional contribution with respect to the one predicted by general relativity. Moreover, the equivalence principle is violated. If one assumes that Snyder mechanics is valid also for macroscopic systems, these results impose strong constraints on the value of the coupling parameter of the Snyder model.

Black brane solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory with Liouville potential

We investigate the global properties of black brane solutions of a three-parameter Einstein-Maxwell model nonminimally coupled to a scalar with exponential potential. The black brane solutions of this model have recently been investigated because of their relevance for holography and for the AdS/condensed matter correspondence. We classify all the possible regular solutions and show that they exist only for a limited range of values of the parameters and that their asymptotic behavior either breaks hyperscaling invariance or has the form of a domain wall. We also write down some exact solutions in Schwarzschild coordinates.

Classical dynamics on Snyder spacetime

We study the classical dynamics of a particle in Snyder spacetime, adopting the formalism of constrained Hamiltonian systems introduced by Dirac. We show that the motion of a particle in a scalar potential is deformed with respect to special relativity by terms of order βE^2. An important result is that in the relativistic Snyder model a consistent choice of the time variable must necessarily depend on the dynamics.

preprint2012arXiv

Analytical mechanics of a relativistic particle in a positional potential

We propose a form for the action of a relativistic particle subject to a positional force that is invariant under time reparametrization and therefore allows for a consistent Hamiltonian formulation of the dynamics. This approach can be useful in the study of phenomenological models. Also the Dirac and Klein-Gordon equation differ from the standard formulation, with corrections of order (E-m)/m in the energy spectra.

Classical and quantum mechanics of the nonrelativistic Snyder model in curved space

The Snyder-de Sitter (SdS) model is a generalization of the Snyder model to a spacetime background of constant curvature. It is an example of noncommutative spacetime admitting two fundamental scales besides the speed of light, and is invariant under the action of the de Sitter group. Here we consider its nonrelativistic counterpart, i.e. the Snyder model restricted to a three-dimensional sphere, and the related model obtained by considering the anti-Snyder model on a pseudosphere, that we call anti-Snyder-de Sitter (aSdS). By means of a nonlinear transformation relating the SdS phase space variables to canonical ones, we are able to investigate the classical and the quantum mechanics of a free particle and of an oscillator in this framework. As in their flat space limit, the SdS and aSdS models exhibit rather different properties. In the SdS case, a lower bound on the localization in position and momentum space arises, which is not present in the aSdS model. In the aSdS case, instead, a specific combination of position and momentum coordinates cannot exceed a constant value. We explicitly solve the classical and the quantum equations for the motion of the free particle and of the harmonic oscillator. In both the SdS and aSdS cases, the frequency of the harmonic oscillator acquires a dependence on the energy.

preprint2011arXiv

Classical and quantum mechanics of the nonrelativistic Snyder model

The Snyder model is an example of noncommutative spacetime admitting a fundamental length scale $β$ and invariant under Lorentz transformations, that can be interpreted as a realization of the doubly special relativity axioms. Here, we consider its nonrelativistic counterpart, i.e. the Snyder model restricted to three-dimensional Euclidean space. We discuss the classical and the quantum mechanics of a free particle in this framework, and show that they strongly depend on the sign of a coupling constant $λ$, appearing in the fundamental commutators and proportional to $β^2$. For example, if $λ$ is negative, momenta are bounded. On the contrary, for positive $λ$, positions and areas are quantized. We also give the exact solution of the harmonic oscillator equations both in the classical and the quantum case, and show that its frequency is energy dependent.

The nonrelativistic limit of the Magueijo-Smolin model of deformed special relativity

We study the nonrelativistic limit of the motion of a classical particle in a model of deformed special relativity and of the corresponding generalized Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations, and show that they reproduce nonrelativistic classical and quantum mechanics, respectively, although the rest mass of a particle no longer coincides with its inertial mass. This fact clarifies the meaning of the different definitions of velocity of a particle available in DSR literature. Moreover, the rest mass of particles and antiparticles differ, breaking the CPT invariance. This effect is close to observational limits and future experiments may give indications on its effective existence.

Extended uncertainty principle and the geometry of (anti)-de Sitter space

It has been proposed that on (anti)-de Sitter background, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle should be modified by the introduction of a term proportional to the cosmological constant. We show that this modification of the uncertainty principle can be derived straightforwardly from the geometric properties of (anti)-de Sitter spacetime. We also discuss the connection between the so-called extended generalized uncertainty principle and triply special relativity.

preprint2008arXiv

Doubly special relativity in de Sitter spacetime

We discuss the generalization of Doubly Special Relativity to a curved de Sitter background. The model has three observer-independent scales, the velocity of light $c$, the radius of curvature of the geometry $α$, and the Planck energy $κ$, and can be realized in a noncommutative position space. It is possible to construct a model exhibiting a duality for the interchange of positions and momenta together with the exchange of $α$ and $κ$.

Black hole solutions in four-dimensional topological gravity

We study spherically symmetric solutions of a four-dimensional theory of gravity with a topological action, which was constructed as a Yang-Mills theory of the Poincaré group and can be considered a generalization to higher dimensions of well-known two-dimensional models. We also discuss the perturbative degrees of freedom and the properties of the theory under conformal transformations.

Classical and Semiclassical Properties of Extremal Black Holes with Dilaton and Modulus Fields

We discuss both classical and semiclassical properties of extremal black holes in theories where the dilaton and a modulus field are present. We find that the corresponding 2-dim geometry is asymptotically anti-de Sitter rather then asymptotically flat as in the purely dilatonic case. This fact has many important consequences, which we analyze at length, both for the classical behaviour and for the thermodynamical properties of the black hole. We also study the Hawking evaporation process in the semiclassical approximation. The calculations strongly indicates the emergence of a stable ground state as the end point of the process. Some comments are made about the relevance of our results for the problem of information loss in black hole physics.

Non-singular four-dimensional black holes and the Jackiw-Teitelboim theory

A four-dimensional dilaton-gravity action whose spherical reduction to two dimensions leads to the Jackiw-Teitelboim theory is presented. A nonsingular black hole solution of the theory is obtained and its physical interpretation is discussed. The classical and semiclassical properties of the solution and of its 2d counterpart are analysed. The 2d theory is also used to model the evaporation process of the near-extremal 4d black hole. We describe in detail the peculiarities of the black hole solutions, in particular the purely topological nature of the Hawking radiation, in the context of the Jackiw-Teitelboim theory.

Black Holes in Higher Derivative Gravity Theories

We study static spherically symmetric solutions of Einstein gravity plus an action polynomial in the Ricci scalar, $R$, of arbitrary degree, $n$, in arbitrary dimension, $D$. The global properties of all such solutions are derived by studying the phase space of field equations in the equivalent theory of gravity coupled to a scalar field, which is obtained by a field redefinition and conformal transformation. The following uniqueness theorem is obtained: provided that the coefficient of the $R^2$ term in the Lagrangian polynomial is positive then the only static spherically symmetric asymptotically flat solution with a regular horizon in these models is the Schwarzschild solution. Other branches of solutions with regular horizons, which are asymptotically anti-de Sitter, or de Sitter, are also found. An exact Schwarzschild-de Sitter type solution is found to exist in the $R+aR^2$ if $D>4$. If terms of cubic or higher order in $R$ are included in the action, then such solutions also exist in four dimensions. The general Schwarzschild-de Sitter type solution for arbitrary $D$ and $n$ is given. The fact that the Schwarzschild solution in these models does not coincide with the exterior solution of physical bodies such as stars has important physical implications which we discuss. As a byproduct, we classify all static spherically symmetric solutions of $D$-dimensional gravity coupled to a scalar field with a potential consisting of a finite sum of exponential terms.
