High-power, frequency-quadrupled UV laser source resonant with the 1^{1}S0_{0}-3^{3}P1_{1} narrow intercombination transition of cadmium at 326.2 nm

We present a novel high-power, frequency-stabilized UV laser source at 326.2~nm, resonant with the Cd 1^{1}S0_{0} - 3^{3}P1_{1} narrow intercombination transition. We have achieved a maximum produced power of 1~W at 326.2~nm by two successive frequency doubling stages of a narrow-linewidth (< 1~kHz) seed laser at 1304.8~nm. About 3.4 W of optical power at 652.4 nm is produced by a visible Raman fiber amplifier (VRFA) that amplifies and generates the second harmonic of the infrared radiation. The visible light is subsequently frequency-doubled down to 326.2~nm in a non-linear bow-tie cavity using a Brewster-cut beta-barium-borate (BBO) crystal, with a maximum conversion efficiency of around 40%\% for 2.5~W coupled red power. Full characterization of the laser source, together with spectroscopy signals of all Cd isotopes, spanning more than 4 GHz in the UV, are shown.

Time correlations of high energy muons in an underground detector

We present the result of a search for correlations in the arrival times of high energy muons collected from 1995 till 2000 with the streamer tube system of the complete MACRO detector at the underground Gran Sasso Lab. Large samples of single muons (8.6 million), double muons (0.46 million) and multiple muons with multiplicities from 3 to 6 (0.08 million) were selected. These samples were used to search for time correlations of cosmic ray particles coming from the whole upper hemisphere or from selected space cones. The results of our analyses confirm with high statistics a random arrival time distribution of high energy cosmic rays.

Time variations in the deep underground muon flux measured by MACRO

More than 30 million of high-energy muons collected with the MACRO detector at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory have been used to search for flux variations of different natures. Two kinds of studies were carried out: search for periodic variations and for the occurrence of clusters of events. Different analysis methods, including Lomb-Scargle spectral analysis and Scan Test statistics have been applied to the data.
