Direct observation of magnetization dynamics generated by nano-contact spin-torque vortex oscillators

Time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy has been used to directly image the magnetization dynamics of nano-contact (NC) spin-torque vortex oscillators (STVOs) when phase-locked to an injected microwave (RF) current. The Kerr images reveal free layer magnetization dynamics that extend outside the NC footprint, where they cannot be detected electrically, but which are crucial to phase-lock STVOs that share common magnetic layers. For a single NC, dynamics were observed not only when the STVO frequency was fully locked to that of the RF current, but also for a partially locked state characterized by periodic changes in the core trajectory at the RF frequency. For a pair of NCs, images reveal the spatial character of dynamics that electrical measurements show to have enhanced amplitude and reduced linewidth. Insight gained from these images may improve understanding of the conditions required for mutual phase-locking of multiple STVOs, and hence enhanced microwave power emission.

Merging droplets in double nano-contact spin torque oscillators

We demonstrate how magnetic droplet soliton pairs, nucleated by two separated nano-contact (NC) spin torque oscillators, can merge into a single droplet soliton. A detailed description of the magnetization dynamics of this merger process is obtained by micromagnetic simulations: A droplet pair with a steady-state in-phase spin precession is generated through the spin-transfer torque effect underneath two separate NCs, followed by a gradual expansion of the droplets volume and the out phase of magnetization on the inner side of the two droplets, resulting in the droplets merging into a larger droplet. This merger occurs only when the NC separation is smaller than a critical value. A transient breathing mode is observed before the merged droplet stabilizes into a steady precession state. The precession frequency of the merged droplet is lower than that of the droplet pair, consistent with its larger size. Merged droplets can again break up into droplet pairs at high enough magnetic field with a strong hysteretic response.

Super-harmonic injection locking of nano-contact spin-torque vortex oscillators

Super-harmonic injection locking of single nano-contact (NC) spin-torque vortex oscillators (STVOs) subject to a small microwave current has been explored. Frequency locking was observed up to the fourth harmonic of the STVO fundamental frequency $f_{0}$ in microwave magneto-electronic measurements. The large frequency tunability of the STVO with respect to $f_{0}$ allowed the device to be locked to multiple sub-harmonics of the microwave frequency $f_{RF}$, or to the same sub-harmonic over a wide range of $f_{RF}$ by tuning the DC current. In general, analysis of the locking range, linewidth, and amplitude showed that the locking efficiency decreased as the harmonic number increased, as expected for harmonic synchronization of a non-linear oscillator. Time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy (TRSKM) revealed significant differences in the spatial character of the magnetization dynamics of states locked to the fundamental and harmonic frequencies, suggesting significant differences in the core trajectories within the same device. Super-harmonic injection locking of a NC-STVO may open up possibilities for devices such as nanoscale frequency dividers, while differences in the core trajectory may allow mutual synchronisation to be achieved in multi-oscillator networks by tuning the spatial character of the dynamics within shared magnetic layers.

Tunable bandgap and spin-orbit coupling by composition control of MoS$_{2}$ and MoO$_{x}$ (X=2 and 3) compounds

We report on composition controlled MoS$_{2}$ and MoO$_{x}$ (x=2 and 3) compounds electrodeposited on Flourine dopped Tin Oxide (FTO) substrate. It was observed that the relative content has systematic electrical and optical changes for different thicknesses of layers ranging from $\approx$20 to 540 nm. Optical and electrical bandgaps reveals a tuneable behavior by controlling the relative content of compounds as well as a sharp transition from p to n-type of semiconductivity. Moreover, spin-orbit interaction of Mo 3d doublet enhances by reduction of MoO$_{3}$ content in thicker films. Our results convey path-way of applying such compounds in optoelectronics and nanoelectronics devices.

Depth dependent magnetization profiles of hybrid exchange springs

We report on the magnetization depth profile of a hybrid exchange spring system in which a Co/Pd multilayer with perpendicular anisotropy is coupled to a CoFeB thin film with in-plane anisotropy. The competition between these two orthogonal anisotropies promotes a strong depth dependence of the magnetization orientation. The angle of the magnetization vector is sensitive both to the strength of the individual anisotropies and to the local exchange constant, and is thus tunable by changing the thickness of the CoFeB layer and by substituting Ni for Pd in one layer of the Co/Pd stack. The resulting magnetic depth profiles are directly probed by element specific x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) of the Co, Fe, and Ni layers located at different average depths. The experimental results are corroborated by micromagnetic simulations.

Reversal mode instability and magnetoresistance in perpendicular (Co/Pd)/Cu/(Co/Ni) pseudo-spin-valves

We have observed distinct temperature-dependent magnetization reversal modes in a perpendicular (Co/Pd)4/Co/Cu/(Co/Ni)4/Co pseudo-spin-valve, which are correlated with spin-transport properties. At 300 K, magnetization reversal occurs by vertically correlated domains. Below 200 K the hysteresis loop becomes bifurcated due to laterally correlated reversal of the individual stacks. The magnetic configuration change also leads to higher spin disorders and a significant increase in the giant magnetoresistance effect. First order reversal curve measurements reveal that the coupled state can be re-established through field cycling, and allow direct determination of the interlayer coupling strength as a function of temperature.

Pseudo Spin Valves Using a (112)-textured DO_22 MnGa Fixed Layer

We demonstrate pseudo spin valves with a (112)-textured DO_22 MnGa (MnGa) tilted magnetization fixed layer and an in-plane CoFe free layer. Single D0_22 MnGa films exhibit a small magnetoresistance (MR) typically observed in metals. In MnGa/Cu/ CoFe spin valves a transition from a negative (-0.08%) to positive (3.88%) MR is realized by introducing a thin spin polarizing CoFe insertion layer at the MnGa/Cu interface and tailoring the MnGa thickness. Finally, the exchange coupling between the MnGa and CoFe insertion layer is studied using a first-order reversal curve (FORC) technique.
