Anomalous thermodynamics in a mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 hexagonal nanowire system

The mixed spin-1/2 Ising model and spin-1 Blume-Capel model in an hexagonal nanowire structure under the presence of crystal field is considered. The free energy is obtained through the transfer matrix technique, which is solved numerically. Our main result lies in the presence of pseudo-transition in low temperature region near the ferrimagnetic/ferromagnetic boundary, due to the influence of a crystal field. The evidence of a pseudo-transition is observed in several quantities. Free energy first derivative quantities like entropy and internal energy show an abrupt but continuous jump, whereas quantities associated with second derivatives of the free energy like the specific heat exhibit a strong sharp peak, quite similar to a second order phase transition. We also investigate magnetization patterns and do not find evidence of spontaneous magnetization. Nevertheless, assuming a small magnetic field, we can induce a magnetization which resembles a spontaneous magnetization at a pseudo-critical temperature.

Magnetoelastic properties of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain in vicinity of a triple coexistence point

We study magnetoelastic properties of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain, whose elementary unit cell consists of two decorating Heisenberg spins and one nodal Ising spin. It is assumed that each couple of the decorating atoms including the Heisenberg spins harmonically vibrates perpendicularly to the chain axis, while the nodal atoms involving the Ising spins are placed at rigid positions when ignoring their lattice vibrations. An effect of the magnetoelastic coupling on a ground state and finite-temperature properties is particularly investigated close to a triple coexistence point depending on a spring-stiffness constant ascribed to the Heisenberg interaction. The magnetoelastic nature of the Heisenberg dimers is reflected through a non-null plateau of the entropy emergent in a low-temperature region, whereas the specific heat displays an anomalous peak slightly below the temperature region corresponding to the entropy plateau. The magnetization also exhibits a plateau in the same temperature region at almost saturated value before it gradually tends to zero upon increasing of temperature. The magnetic susceptibility displays within the plateau region an inverse temperature dependence, which slightly drops above this plateau, whereas an inverse temperature dependence is repeatedly recovered at high enough temperatures.

Peculiarities in pseudo-transitions of a mixed spin-$(1/2,1)$ Ising-Heisenberg double-tetrahedral chain in an external magnetic field

Recently, it has been rigorously verified that several one-dimensional (1D) spin models may exhibit a peculiar pseudo-transition accompanied with anomalous response of thermodynamic quantities in a close vicinity of pseudo-critical temperature. In the present work we will introduce and exactly solve a mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising-Heisenberg double-tetrahedral chain in an external magnetic field as another particular example of 1D lattice-statistical model with short-range interactions that displays a pseudo-transition of this type. The investigated model exhibits at zero temperature three ferrimagnetic phases, three frustrated phases, and one saturated paramagnetic phase. The ground-state phase diagram involves five unusual interfaces (phase boundaries), at which the residual entropy per site equals to a larger entropy of one of two coexisting phases. Four such interfaces are between a non-degenerate ferrimagnetic phase and a macroscopically degenerate frustrated phase, while one interface is between two non-degenerate ferrimagnetic phases. Though thermal excitations typically destroy all fingerprints of zero-temperature phase transitions of 1D lattice-statistical models with short-range forces, the mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising-Heisenberg double-tetrahedral chain is quite robust with respect to thermal excitations and it displays peculiar pseudo-transitions close to all five aforementioned interfaces.

Quantum decoration transformation for spin models

It is quite relevant the extension of decoration transformation for quantum spin models since most of the real materials could be well described by Heisenberg type models. Here we propose an exact quantum decoration transformation and also showing interesting properties such as the persistence of symmetry and the symmetry breaking during this transformation. Although the proposed transformation, in principle, cannot be used to map exactly a quantum spin lattice model into another quantum spin lattice model, since the operators are non-commutative. However, it is possible the mapping in the "classical" limit, establishing an equivalence between both quantum spin lattice models. To study the validity of this approach for quantum spin lattice model, we use the Zassenhaus formula, and we verify how the correction could influence the decoration transformation. But this correction could be useless to improve the quantum decoration transformation because it involves the second-nearest-neighbor and further nearest neighbor couplings, which leads into a cumbersome task to establish the equivalence between both lattice models. This correction also gives us valuable information about its contribution, for most of the Heisenberg type models, this correction could be irrelevant at least up to the third order term of Zassenhaus formula. This transformation is applied to a finite size Heisenberg chain, comparing with the exact numerical results, our result is consistent for weak xy-anisotropy coupling. We also apply to bond-alternating Ising-Heisenberg chain model, obtaining an accurate result in the limit of the quasi-Ising chain.

Thermal entanglement and sharp specific-heat peak in an exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg ladder with alternating Ising and Heisenberg inter-leg couplings

The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg two-leg ladder accounting for alternating Ising and Heisenberg inter-leg couplings in addition to the Ising intra-leg coupling is rigorously mapped onto to a mixed spin-(3/2,1/2) Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with the nodal Ising spins $S=3/2$ and the interstitial spin-1/2 Heisenberg dimers. The latter effective model with higher-order interactions between the nodal and interstitial spins is subsequently exactly solved within the transfer-matrix method. The model under investigation exhibits five different ground states: ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, superantiferromagnetic and two types of frustrated ground states with a non-zero residual entropy. A detailed study of thermodynamic properties reveals an anomalous specific-heat peak at low enough temperatures, which is strongly reminiscent because of its extraordinary height and sharpness to an anomaly accompanying a phase transition. It is convincingly evidenced, however, that the anomalous peak in the specific heat is finite and it comes from vigorous thermal excitations from a two-fold degenerate ground state towards a macroscopically degenerate excited state. Thermal entanglement between the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg spins is also comprehensively explored by taking advantage of the concurrence. The threshold temperature delimiting a boundary between the entangled and disentangled parameter space may show presence of a peculiar temperature reentrance.

Zero temperature non-plateau magnetization and magnetocaloric effect in an Ising-XYZ diamond chain structure

Zero temperature non-plateau magnetization is a peculiar property of a quantum spin chain and it sometimes appears due to different gyromagnetic factors. In this study, we illustrate a quite unusual nonplateau magnetization property driven by XY-anisotropy in an Ising-XYZ diamond chain. Two particles with spin-1/2 are bonded by XYZ coupling and they are responsible for the emergence of non-plateau magnetization. These two quantum operator spins are bonded to two nodal Ising spins and this process is repeated infinitely to yield a diamond chain structure. Due to the non-plateau magnetization property, we focus our discussion on the magnetocaloric effect of this model by presenting the isentropic curves and the Gruneisen parameters, as well as showing the regions where the model exhibits an efficient magnetocaloric effect. Due to the existence of two phases located very close to each other, the strong XY-anisotropy exhibits a particular behavior with a magnetocaloric effect, with a wider interval in the magnetic field, where the magnetocaloric effect is efficient.

Pairwise thermal entanglement in Ising-XYZ diamond chain structure in an external magnetic field

Quantum entanglement is one of the most fascinating types of correlation that can be shared only among quantum systems. The Heisenberg chain is one of the simplest quantum chains which exhibits a reach entanglement feature, due to the Heisenberg interaction is quantum coupling in the spin system. The two particles were coupled trough XYZ coupling or simply called as two-qubit XYZ spin, which are the responsible for the emergence of thermal entanglement. These two-qubit operators are bonded to two nodal Ising spins, and this process is repeated infinitely resulting in a diamond chain structure. We will discuss two-qubit thermal entanglement effect on Ising-XYZ diamond chain structure. The concurrence could be obtained straightforwardly in terms of two-qubit density operator elements, using this result, we study the thermal entanglement, as well as the threshold temperature where entangled state vanishes. The present model displays a quite unusual concurrence behavior, such as, the boundary of two entangled regions becomes a disentangled region, this is intrinsically related to the XY-anisotropy in the Heisenberg coupling. Despite a similar property had been found for only two-qubit, here we show in the case of a diamond chain structure, which reasonably represents real materials.

Rise of pairwise thermal entanglement for an alternating Ising and Heisenberg spin chain in an arbitrarily oriented magnetic field

Typically two particles (spins) could be maximally entangled at zero temperature, and for a certain temperature the phenomenon of entanglement vanishes at the threshold temperature. For the Heisenberg coupled model or even the Ising model with a transverse magnetic field, one can observe some rise of entanglement even for a disentangled region at zero temperature. So we can understand this emergence of entanglement at finite temperature as being due to the mixing of some maximally entangled states with some other untangled states. Here, we present a simple one-dimensional Ising model with alternating Ising and Heisenberg spins in an arbitrarily oriented magnetic field, which can be mapped onto the classical Ising model with a magnetic field. This model does not show any evidence of entanglement at zero temperature, but surprisingly at finite temperature rise a pairwise thermal entanglement between two untangled spins at zero temperature, when an arbitrarily oriented magnetic field is applied. This effect is a purely magnetic field, and the temperature dependence, as soon as the temperature increases, causes a small increase in concurrence achieving its maximum at around 0.1. Even for long-range entanglement, a weak concurrence still survives. There are also some real materials that could serve as candidates that would exhibit this effect, such as Dy(NO$_{3}$)(DMSO)$_{2}$Cu(opba)(DMSO)$_{2}$.

The magnetization plateaus of the ferro and anti-ferro spin-1 classical models with $S_z^2$ term

We study in detail the exact thermodynamics of the one-dimensional standard and staggered spin-1 Ising models with a single-ion anisotropy term in the presence of a longitudinal magnetic field at low temperatures. The results are valid for the ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic (AF) models and for positive and negative values of the crystal field for $T>0$. Although the excited states of the ferro and anti-ferro models are highly degenerate, we show that the temperature required for reaching the first excited state in the classical spin-1 ferro model gives a scale of temperature that permits fitting the z-component of the magnetization only by the contribution of two ground states of the model. This approximation is not true for the equivalent AF function due to the fact that the AF model is gapless along the lines separating the phases in its phase diagram at T=0. We relate the number of plateaus in the magnetization of each model to their respective phase diagrams at T=0. The specific heat per site of the AF model distinguishes, at low temperature, the transitions $\mbox{A} \rightleftharpoons \mbox{E}$ and $\mbox{G} \rightleftharpoons \mbox{E}$ as the external magnetic field is varied. The exact Helmholtz free energy of the classical spin-1 model is mapped onto the equivalent function of the ionic limit of the 1D extended Hubbard model by proper transformations.

Thermal entanglement in an orthogonal dimer-plaquette chain with alternating Ising-Heisenberg coupling

In this paper we explore the entanglement in orthogonal dimer-plaquette Ising-Heisenberg chain, assembled between plaquette edges, also known as orthogonal dimer plaquettes. The quantum entanglement properties involving an infinite chain structure are quite important, not only because the mathematical calculation is cumbersome but also because real materials are well represented by infinite chain. Using the local gauge symmetry of this model, we are able to map onto a simple spin-1 like Ising and spin-1/2 Heisenberg dimer model with single effective ion anisotropy. Thereafter this model can be solved using the decoration transformation and transfer matrix approach. First, we discuss the phase diagram at zero temperature of this model, where we find five ground states, one ferromagnetic, one antiferromagnetic, one triplet-triplet disordered and one triplet-singlet disordered phase, beside a dimer ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic phase. In addition, we discuss the thermodynamic properties such as entropy, where we display the residual entropy. Furthermore, using the nearest site correlation function it is possible also to analyze the pairwise thermal entanglement for both orthogonal dimers, additionally we discuss the threshold temperature of the entangled region as a function of Hamiltonian parameters. We find quite interesting thin reentrance threshold temperature for one of the dimers, and we also discuss the differences and similarities for both dimers.

Equivalence between non-bilinear spin-$S$ Ising model and Wajnflasz model

We propose the mapping of polynomial of degree 2S constructed as a linear combination of powers of spin-$S$ (for simplicity, we called as spin-$S$ polynomial) onto spin-crossover state. The spin-$S$ polynomial in general can be projected onto non-symmetric degenerated spin up (high-spin) and spin down (low-spin) momenta. The total number of mapping for each general spin-$S$ is given by $2(2^{2S}-1)$. As an application of this mapping, we consider a general non-bilinear spin-$S$ Ising model which can be transformed onto spin-crossover described by Wajnflasz model. Using a further transformation we obtain the partition function of the effective spin-1/2 Ising model, making a suitable mapping the non-symmetric contribution leads us to a spin-1/2 Ising model with a fixed external magnetic field, which in general cannot be solved exactly. However, for a particular case of non-bilinear spin-$S$ Ising model could become equivalent to an exactly solvable Ising model. The transformed Ising model exhibits a residual entropy, then it should be understood also as a frustrated spin model, due to competing parameters coupling of the non-bilinear spin-$S$ Ising model.

Frustrated Ising model on the Cairo pentagonal lattice

Through the direct decoration transformation approach, we obtain a general solution for the pentagonal Ising model, showing its equivalence to the isotropic free-fermion eight-vertex model. We study the ground-state phase diagram, in which one ferromagnetic (FM) state, one ferrimagnetic (FIM) state, and one frustrated state are found. Using the exact solution of the pentagonal Ising model, we discuss the finite-temperature phase diagrams and find a phase transition between the FIM state and the disordered state as well as a phase transition between the disordered state and the FM state. We also discuss some additional remarkable properties of the model, such as the magnetization, entropy, and specific heat, at finite temperature and at its low-temperature asymptotic limit. Because of the influence of the second-order phase transition between the frustrated and ferromagnetic phases, we obtain surprisingly low values of the entropy and the specific heat until the critical temperature is reached.

Geometrical frustration of an extended Hubbard diamond chain in the quasi-atomic limit

We study the geometrical frustration of extended Hubbard model on diamond chain, where vertical lines correspond to the hopping and repulsive Coulomb interaction terms between sites, while the rest of them represent only the Coulomb repulsion one. The phase diagrams at zero temperature show quite curious phases: five types of frustrated states and four types of non-frustrated ones, ordered antiferromagnetically. Although decoration transformation was derived to spin coupling systems, this approach can be applied to electron coupling ones. Thus the extended Hubbard model can be mapped onto another effective extended Hubbard model in atomic limit with additional three and four-body couplings. This effective model is solved exactly through transfer matrix method. In addition, using the exact solution of this model we discuss several thermodynamic properties away from half filled band, such as chemical potential behavior, electronic density, entropy, where we study the geometrical frustration, consequently we investigate the specific heat as well.

Spontaneous distortion in the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on decorated planar lattices with a magnetoelastic coupling

Magnetoelastic properties of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on doubly decorated planar lattices partially amenable to lattice vibrations are examined within the framework of the harmonic approximation and decoration-iteration transformation. It is shown that the mutual interplay between quantum spin fluctuations and local fluctuations of lattice spacings enhances typical quantum features like the quantum reduction of the magnetization in the ground state of the quantum antiferromagnetic phase, while it does not affect the ground-state behaviour of the classical ferromagnetic phase by no means. It also turns out that local fluctuations of lattice spacings are responsible for a much more pronounced reduction of the critical temperature in the quantum antiferromagnetic phase than in the classical ferromagnetic phase.

Thermal entanglement in exactly solvable Ising-XXZ diamond chain structure

Most quantum entanglement investigations are focused on two qubits or some finite (small) chain structure, since the infinite chain structure is a considerably cumbersome task. Therefore, the quantum entanglement properties involving an infinite chain structure is quite important, not only because the mathematical calculation is cumbersome but also because real materials are well represented by an infinite chain. Thus, in this paper we consider an entangled diamond chain with Ising and anisotropic Heisenberg (Ising-XXZ) coupling. Two interstitial particles are coupled through Heisenberg coupling or simply two-qubit Heisenberg, which could be responsible for the emergence of entanglement. These two-qubit Heisenberg operators are interacted with two nodal Ising spins. An infinite diamond chain is organized by interstitial-interstitial and nodal-interstitial (dimer-monomer) site couplings. We are able to get the thermal average of the two-qubit operator, called the reduced two-qubit density operator. Since these density operators are spatially separated, we could obtain the concurrence (entanglement) directly in the thermodynamic limit. The thermal entanglement (concurrence) is constructed for different values of the anisotropic Heisenberg parameter, magnetic field and temperature. We also observed the threshold temperature via the parameter of anisotropy, Heisenberg and Ising interaction, external magnetic field, and temperature.

Bijection between spin $S=\frac{p^{M}-1}{2}$ and a cluster of $M$ spins $σ=\frac{p-1}{2}$

We propose a general method by which a spin-$S$ is decomposed into spins less than $S$. We have obtain the exact mapping between spin $S=\frac{p^{M}-1}{2}$ and a cluster of $M$ spins $σ=\frac{p-1}{2}$. We have discuss the possible applications of such transformations. In particular we have show how a general $d+1$ dimensional spin-$\frac{p-1}{2}$ model with general interactions can be reduced to $d$-dimensional spin-$S$ model with $S=\frac{p^{M}-1}{2}$.

Direct algebraic mapping transformation for decorated spin models

In this article we propose a general transformation for decorated spin models. The advantage of this transformation is to perform a direct mapping of a decorated spin model onto another effective spin thus simplifying algebraic computations by avoiding the proliferation of unnecessary iterative transformations and parameters that might otherwise lead to transcendental equations. Direct mapping transformation is discussed in detail for decorated Ising spin models as well as for decorated Ising-Heisenberg spin models, with arbitrary coordination number and with some constrained Hamiltonian's parameter for systems with coordination number larger than 4 (3) with (without) spin inversion symmetry respectively. In order to illustrate this transformation we give several examples of this mapping transformation, where most of them were not explored yet.

Exactly solvable mixed-spin Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with the biquadratic interactions and single-ion anisotropy

An exactly solvable variant of mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain is considered. Vertical spin-1 dimers are taken as quantum ones with Heisenberg bilinear and biquadratic interactions and with single-ion anisotropy, while all interactions between spin-1 and spin-1/2 residing on the intermediate sites are taken in the Ising form. The detailed analysis of the $T=0$ ground state phase diagram is presented. The phase diagrams have shown to be rather rich, demonstrating large variety of ground states: saturated one, three ferrimagnetic with magnetization equal to 3/5 and another four ferrimagnetic ground states with magnetization equal to 1/5. There are also two frustrated macroscopically degenerated ground states which could exist at zero magnetic filed. Solving the model exactly within classical transfer-matrix formalism we obtain an exact expressions for all thermodynamic function of the system. The thermodynamic properties of the model have been described exactly by exact calculation of partition function within the direct classical transfer-matrix formalism, the entries of transfer matrix, in their turn, contain the information about quantum states of vertical spin-1 XXZ dimer (eigenvalues of local hamiltonian for vertical link).

Spinless fermion model on diamond chain

The decoration or iteration transformation was widely applied to solve exactly the magnetic spin models in one-dimensional and two-dimensional lattice. The motif of this letter is to extend the decoration transformation approach for models that describe interacting electron systems instead of spin magnetic systems, one illustrative model to be studied, will be the spinless fermion model on diamond chain. Using the decoration transformation, we are able to solve this model exactly. The phase diagram of this model was explored at zero temperature as well as the thermodynamics properties of the model for any particle density. The particular case when particle-hole symmetry is satisfied was also discussed.

Generalized Transformation for Decorated Spin Models

The paper discusses the transformation of decorated Ising models into an effective \textit{undecorated} spin models, using the most general Hamiltonian for interacting Ising models including a long range and high order interactions. The inverse of a Vandermonde matrix with equidistant nodes $[-s,s]$ is used to obtain an analytical expression of the transformation. This kind of transformation is very useful to obtain the partition function of decorated systems. The method presented by Fisher is also extended, in order to obtain the correlation functions of the decorated Ising models transforming into an effective undecorated Ising models. We apply this transformation to a particular mixed spin-(1/2,1) and (1/2,2) square lattice with only nearest site interaction. This model could be transformed into an effective uniform spin-$S$ square lattice with nearest and next-nearest interaction, furthermore the effective Hamiltonian also include combinations of three-body and four-body interactions, particularly we considered spin 1 and 2.

Thermodynamics of the quantum spin-S XXZ chain

The thermodynamics of the spin-$S$ anisotropic quantum $XXZ$ chain with arbitrary value of $S$ and unitary norm, in the high-temperature regime, is reported. The single-ion anisotropy term and the interaction with an external magnetic field in the $z$-direction are taken into account. We obtain, for arbitrary value of $S$, the $β$-expansion of the Helmholtz free energy of the model up to order $β^6$ and show that it actually depends on $\frac{1}{S(S+1)}$. Its classical limit is obtained by simply taking $S\to \infty$. At $h=0$ and D=0, our high temperature expansion of the classical model coincides with Joyce's exact solution\cite{joyce_prl}. We study, in the high temperature region, some thermodynamic quantities such as the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility as functions of spin and verify for which values of $S$ those thermodynamic functions behave classically. Their finite temperature behavior is inferred from interpolation of their high- and low-temperature behavior, and shown to be in good agreement with numerical results. The finite temperature behavior is shown for higher values of spin.

High Temperature Expansion for a Chain Model

We consider an arbitrary translationally invariant chain model with nearest neighbors interaction and satisfying periodic boundary condition. The approach developed here allows a thermodynamic description of the chain model directly in terms of grand potential per site. This thermodynamic function is derived from an auxiliary function constructed only from open connected sub-chains. In order to exemplify its application and how this approach works we consider the Heisenberg XXZ model. We obtain the coefficients of the high temperature expansion of the free energy per site of the model up to third order.

Analytical Results of the One-Dimensional Hubbard Model in the High Temperature Limit

We investigate the grand potential of the one-dimensional Hubbard model in the high temperature limit, calculating the coefficients of the high temperature expansion ($β$-expansion) of this function up to order $β^4$ by an alternative method. The results derived are analytical and do not involve any perturbation expansion in the hopping constant, being valid for arbitrary density of electrons in the one-dimensional model. In the half-filled case, we compare our analytical results for the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility, in the high-temperature limit, with the ones obtained by Beni {\it et al.} and Takahashi's integral equations, showing that the latter result does not take into account the complete energy spectrum of the one-dimensional Hubbard model. The exact integral solution by Jüttner {\it et al}. is applied to the determination of the range of validity of our expansion in $β$ in the half-filled case, for several different values of $U$.

Free Fermions at Finite Temperature: An Application of the Non-Commutative Algebra

Charret et. al. applied the properties of the Grassmann generators to develop a new method to calculate the coefficients of the high temperature expansion of the grand canonical partition function of self-interacting fermionic models in any d-dimensions (d>=1). The method explores the anti-commuting nature of fermionic fields and avoids the calculation of the fermionic path integral. We apply this new method to the relativistic free Dirac fermions and recover the known results in the literature.

Grassmann Algebra and Fermions at Finite Temperature

For any d-dimensional self-interacting fermionic model, all coefficients in the high-temperature expansion of its grand canonical partition function can be put in terms of multivariable Grassmann integrals. A new approach to calculate such coefficients, based on direct exploitation of the grassmannian nature of fermionic operators, is presented. We apply the method to the soluble Hatsugai-Kohmoto model, reobtaining well-known results.

Grand Canonical Partition Function for Unidimensional Systems: Application to Hubbard Model up to Order beta^3

We exploit the grassmannian nature of the variables involved in the path integral expression of the grand canonical partition function for self--interacting fermionic models to show, in one-space dimension, a general relation among the terms of it expansion in the high temperature limit and a combination of co-factors of a suitable matrix with commuting entries. As an application, we apply this framework to calculate the exact coefficients, up to order β^3, of the expansion of the grand canonical partition function for the Hubbard model in d=(1+1) in the high temperature limit. The results are valid for any set of parameters that characterize the model.
