Dephasing-assisted macrospin transport

Transport phenomena are ubiquitous in physics, and it is generally understood that the environmental disorder and noise deteriorates the transfer of excitations. There are however cases in which transport can be enhanced by fluctuations. In the present work we show, by means of micromagnetics simulations, that transport efficiency in a chain of classical macrospins can be greatly increased by an optimal level of dephasing noise. We demonstrate also the same effect in a simplified model, the dissipative Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger equation subject to phase noise. Our results point towards the realisation of a large class of magnonics and spintronics devices, where disorder and noise can be used to enhance spin-dependent transport efficiency.

Coupled transport in rotor models

Steady non-equilibrium states are investigated in a one-dimensional setup in the presence of two thermodynamic currents. Two paradigmatic nonlinear oscillators models are investigated: an XY chain and the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Their distinctive feature is that the relevant variable is an angle in both cases. We point out the importance of clearly distinguishing between energy and heat flux. In fact, even in the presence of a vanishing Seebeck coefficient, a coupling between (angular) momentum and energy arises, mediated by the unavoidable presence of a "coherent" energy flux. Such a contribution is the result of the "advection" induced by the position-dependent angular velocity. As a result, in the XY model, the knowledge of the two diagonal elements of the Onsager matrix suffices to reconstruct its transport properties. The analysis of the nonequilibrium steady states finally allows to strengthen the connection between the two models.

Eigenstates and instabilities of chains with embedded defects

We consider the eigenvalue problem for one-dimensional linear Schrödinger lattices (tight-binding) with an embedded few-sites linear or nonlinear, Hamiltonian or non-conservative defect (an oligomer). Such a problem arises when considering scattering states in the presence of (generally complex) impurities as well as in the stability analysis of nonlinear waves. We describe a general approach based on a matching of solutions of the linear portions of the lattice at the location of the oligomer defect. As specific examples we discuss both linear and nonlinear, Hamiltonian and $\cP \cT$-symmetric dimers and trimers. In the linear case, this approach provides us a handle for semi-analytically computing the spectrum [this amounts to the solution of a polynomial equation]. In the nonlinear case, it enables the computation of the linearization spectrum around the stationary solutions. The calculations showcase the oscillatory instabilities that strongly nonlinear states typically manifest.

Off-equilibrium Langevin dynamics of the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger chain

Suitable Langevin thermostats are introduced which are able to control both the temperature and the chemical potential of a one-dimensional lattice of nonlinear Schrödinger oscillators. The resulting non-equilibrium stationary states are then investigated in two limit cases (low temperatures and large particle densities), where the dynamics can be mapped onto that of a coupled-rotor chain with an external torque. As a result, an effective kinetic definition of temperature can be introduced and compared with the general microcanonical (global) definition.

Asymmetric Wave Propagation Through Nonlinear PT-symmetric Oligomers

In the present paper, we consider nonlinear PT-symmetric dimers and trimers (more generally, oligomers) embedded within a linear Schr{ö}dinger lattice. We examine the stationary states of such chains in the form of plane waves, and analytically compute their reflection and transmission coefficients through the nonlinear PT symmetric oligomer, as well as the corresponding rectification factors which clearly illustrate the asymmetry between left and right propagation in such systems. We examine not only the existence but also the dynamical stability of the plane wave states and interestingly find them to be generically unstable. Lastly, we generalize our numerical considerations to the more physically relevant case of Gaussian initial wavepackets and confirm that the asymmetry in the transmission properties persists in the case of such wavepackets, as well.

Scattering lengths and universality in superdiffusive Lévy materials

We study the effects of scattering lengths on Lévy walks in quenched one-dimensional random and fractal quasi-lattices, with scatterers spaced according to a long-tailed distribution. By analyzing the scaling properties of the random-walk probability distribution, we show that the effect of the varying scattering length can be reabsorbed in the multiplicative coefficient of the scaling length. This leads to a superscaling behavior, where the dynamical exponents and also the scaling functions do not depend on the value of the scattering length. Within the scaling framework, we obtain an exact expression for the multiplicative coefficient as a function of the scattering length both in the annealed and in the quenched random and fractal cases. Our analytic results are compared with numerical simulations, with excellent agreement, and are supposed to hold also in higher dimensions

The nonequilibrium discrete nonlinear Schroedinger equation

We study nonequilibrium steady states of the one-dimensional discrete nonlinear Schroedinger equation. This system can be regarded as a minimal model for stationary transport of bosonic particles like photons in layered media or cold atoms in deep optical traps. Due to the presence of two conserved quantities, energy and norm (or number of particles), the model displays coupled transport in the sense of linear irreversible thermodynamics. Monte Carlo thermostats are implemented to impose a given temperature and chemical potential at the chain ends. As a result, we find that the Onsager coefficients are finite in the thermodynamic limit, i.e. transport is normal. Depending on the position in the parameter space, the "Seebeck coefficient" may be either positive or negative. For large differences between the thermostat parameters, density and temperature profiles may display an unusual nonmonotonic shape. This is due to the strong dependence of the Onsager coefficients on the state variables.

Discrete Breathers in a Realistic Coarse-Grained Model of Proteins

We report the results of molecular dynamics simulations of an off-lattice protein model featuring a physical force-field and amino-acid sequence. We show that localized modes of nonlinear origin (discrete breathers) emerge naturally as continuations of a subset of high-frequency normal modes residing at specific sites dictated by the native fold. In the case of the small $β$-barrel structure that we consider, localization occurs on the turns connecting the strands. At high energies, discrete breathers stabilize the structure by concentrating energy on few sites, while their collapse marks the onset of large-amplitude fluctuations of the protein. Furthermore, we show how breathers develop as energy-accumulating centres following perturbations even at distant locations, thus mediating efficient and irreversible energy transfers. Remarkably, due to the presence of angular potentials, the breather induces a local static distortion of the native fold. Altogether, the combination of this two nonlinear effects may provide a ready means for remotely controlling local conformational changes in proteins.

DXL: a sounding rocket mission for the study of solar wind charge exchange and local hot bubble X-ray emission

The Diffuse X-rays from the Local galaxy (DXL) mission is an approved sounding rocket project with a first launch scheduled around December 2012. Its goal is to identify and separate the X-ray emission generated by solar wind charge exchange from that of the local hot bubble to improve our understanding of both. With 1,000 cm2 proportional counters and grasp of about 10 cm2 sr both in the 1/4 and 3/4 keV bands, DXL will achieve in a 5-minute flight what cannot be achieved by current and future X-ray satellites.

Local and average behavior in inhomogeneous superdiffusive media

We consider a random walk on one-dimensional inhomogeneous graphs built from Cantor fractals. Our study is motivated by recent experiments that demonstrated superdiffusion of light in complex disordered materials, thereby termed Lévy glasses. We introduce a geometric parameter $α$ which plays a role analogous to the exponent characterizing the step length distribution in random systems. We study the large-time behavior of both local and average observables; for the latter case, we distinguish two different types of averages, respectively over the set of all initial sites and over the scattering sites only. The "single long jump approximation" is applied to analytically determine the different asymptotic behaviours as a function of $α$ and to understand their origin. We also discuss the possibility that the root of the mean square displacement and the characteristic length of the walker distribution may grow according to different power laws; this anomalous behaviour is typical of processes characterized by Lévy statistics and here, in particular, it is shown to influence average quantities.

Asymptotic energy profile of a wavepacket in disordered chains

We investigate the long time behavior of a wavepacket initially localized at a single site $n_0$ in translationally invariant harmonic and anharmonic chains with random interactions. In the harmonic case, the energy profile $ \bar{< e_n(t)>}$ averaged on time and disorder decays for large $|n-n_0|$ as a power law $\bar{< e_n(t)>}\approx C|n-n_0|^{-η}$ where $η=5/2$ and 3/2 for initial displacement and momentum excitations, respectively. The prefactor $C$ depends on the probability distribution of the harmonic coupling constants and diverges in the limit of weak disorder. As a consequence, the moments $< m_ν(t)>$ of the energy distribution averaged with respect to disorder diverge in time as $t^{β(ν)}$ for $ν\geq 2$, where $β=ν+1-η$ for $ν>η-1$. Molecular dynamics simulations yield good agreement with these theoretical predictions. Therefore, in this system, the second moment of the wavepacket diverges as a function of time despite the wavepacket is not spreading. Thus, this only criteria often considered earlier as proving the spreading of a wave packet, cannot be considered as sufficient in any model. The anharmonic case is investigated numerically. It is found for intermediate disorder, that the tail of the energy profile becomes very close to those of the harmonic case. For weak and strong disorder, our results suggest that the crossover to the harmonic behavior occurs at much larger $|n-n_0|$ and larger time.

Lévy-type diffusion on one-dimensional directed Cantor Graphs

Lévy-type walks with correlated jumps, induced by the topology of the medium, are studied on a class of one-dimensional deterministic graphs built from generalized Cantor and Smith-Volterra-Cantor sets. The particle performs a standard random walk on the sets but is also allowed to move ballistically throughout the empty regions. Using scaling relations and the mapping onto the electric network problem, we obtain the exact values of the scaling exponents for the asymptotic return probability, the resistivity and the mean square displacement as a function of the topological parameters of the sets. Interestingly, the systems undergoes a transition from superdiffusive to diffusive behavior as a function of the filling of the fractal. The deterministic topology also allows us to discuss the importance of the choice of the initial condition. In particular, we demonstrate that local and average measurements can display different asymptotic behavior. The analytic results are compared with the numerical solution of the master equation of the process.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of a stochastic model of anomalous heat transport

We study the dynamics of covariances in a chain of harmonic oscillators with conservative noise in contact with two stochastic Langevin heat baths. The noise amounts to random collisions between nearest-neighbour oscillators that exchange their momenta. In a recent paper, [S Lepri et al. J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 42 (2009) 025001], we have studied the stationary state of this system with fixed boundary conditions, finding analytical exact expressions for the temperature profile and the heat current in the thermodynamic (continuum) limit. In this paper we extend the analysis to the evolution of the covariance matrix and to generic boundary conditions. Our main purpose is to construct a hydrodynamic description of the relaxation to the stationary state, starting from the exact equations governing the evolution of the correlation matrix. We identify and adiabatically eliminate the fast variables, arriving at a continuity equation for the temperature profile T(y,t), complemented by an ordinary equation that accounts for the evolution in the bulk. Altogether, we find that the evolution of T(y,t) is the result of fractional diffusion.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of a stochastic model of anomalous heat transport: numerical analysis

We study heat transport in a chain of harmonic oscillators with random elastic collisions between nearest-neighbours. The equations of motion of the covariance matrix are numerically solved for free and fixed boundary conditions. In the thermodynamic limit, the shape of the temperature profile and the value of the stationary heat flux depend on the choice of boundary conditions. For free boundary conditions, they also depend on the coupling strength with the heat baths. Moreover, we find a strong violation of local equilibrium at the chain edges that determine two boundary layers of size $\sqrt{N}$ (where $N$ is the chain length), that are characterized by a different scaling behaviour from the bulk. Finally, we investigate the relaxation towards the stationary state, finding two long time scales: the first corresponds to the relaxation of the hydrodynamic modes; the second is a manifestation of the finiteness of the system.

Slow energy relaxation and localization in 1D lattices

We investigate the energy relaxation process produced by thermal baths at zero temperature acting on the boundary atoms of chains of classical anharmonic oscillators. Time-dependent perturbation theory allows us to obtain an explicit solution of the harmonic problem: even in such a simple system nontrivial features emerge from the interplay of the different decay rates of Fourier modes. In particular, a crossover from an exponential to an inverse-square-root law occurs on a time scale proportional to the system size $N$. A further crossover back to an exponential law is observed only at much longer times (of the order $N^3$). In the nonlinear chain, the relaxation process is initially equivalent to the harmonic case over a wide time span, as illustrated by simulations of the $β$ Fermi-Pasta-Ulam model. The distinctive feature is that the second crossover is not observed due to the spontaneous appearance of breathers, i.e. space-localized time-periodic solutions, that keep a finite residual energy in the lattice. We discuss the mechanism yielding such solutions and also explain why it crucially depends on the boundary conditions.
