Solid-like to Liquid-like Behavior of Cu Diffusion in Superionic Cu2X (X=S, Se): An Inelastic Neutron Scattering and Ab-Initio Molecular Dynamics Investigation

Cu2Se and Cu2S are excellent model systems of superionic conductors with large diffusion coefficients that have been reported to exhibit different solid-liquid-like Cu-ion diffusion. In this paper, we clarify the atomic dynamics of these compounds with temperature-dependent ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments. Using the dynamical structure factor and Van-Hove correlation function, we interrogate the jump-time, hopping length distribution and associated diffusion coefficients. In cubic-Cu2Se at 500 K, we find solid-like diffusion with Cu-jump lengths matching well the first-neighbour Cu-Cu distance of ~3 Å in the crystal, and clearly defined optic phonons involving Cu-vibrations. Above 700 K, the jump-length distribution becomes a broad maximum cantered around 4 Å, spanning the first and second neighbour lattice distances, and a concurrent broadening of the Cu-phonon density of states. Further, above 900 K, the Cu-diffusion becomes close to liquid-like, with distributions of Cu-atoms continuously connecting crystal sites, while the vibrational modes involving Cu motions are highly damped, though still not fully over-damped as in a liquid. At low temperatures, the solid-like diffusion is consistent with previous X-ray diffraction and quasielastic neutron scattering experiments, while the higher-temperature observation of the liquid-like diffusion is in agreement with previous AIMD simulations. We also report AIMD simulations in Cu2S in the hexagonal and cubic superionic phases, and observe similar solid and liquid-like diffusion at low- and high-temperatures, respectively. The calculated ionic-conductivity is in fair agreement with reported experimental values.

Phonons and Oxygen Diffusion in Bi2O3 and (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3

We report investigation of phonons and oxygen diffusion in Bi2O3 and (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3. The phonon spectra have been measured in Bi2O3 at high temperatures up to 1083 K using inelastic neutron scattering. Ab-initio calculations have been used to compute the individual contributions of the constituent atoms in Bi2O3 and (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3 to the total phonon density of states. Our computed results indicate that as temperature is increased, there is a complete loss of sharp peak structure in the vibrational density of states. Ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations show that even at 1000 K in δ-phase Bi2O3, Bi-Bi correlations remain ordered in the crystalline lattice while the correlations between O-O show liquid like disordered behavior. In the case of (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3, the O-O correlations broadened at around 500 K indicating that oxygen conductivity is possible at such low temperatures in (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3 although the conductivity is much less than that observed in the undoped high temperature δ-phase of Bi2O3. This result is consistent with the calculated diffusion coefficients of oxygen and observation by QENS experiments. Our ab-initio molecular dynamics calculations predict that macroscopic diffusion is attainable in (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3 at much lower temperatures, which is more suited for technological applications. Our studies elucidate the easy directions of diffusion in δ-Bi2O3 and (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3.

High Temperature Phase Stability in Li0.12Na0.88NbO3: A Combined powder X-Ray and Neutron Diffraction Study

Lithium doped sodium niobate is an ecofriendly piezoelectric material that exhibits a variety of structural phase transitions with composition and temperature. We have investigated the phase stabilities of an important composition Li0.12Na0.88NbO3 (LNN12) using a combination of powder x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques in the temperature range 300 - 1100 K. Detailed Rietveld analyses of thermo-diffractograms show a variety of structural phase transitions ranging from non-polar antiferrodistortive to ferroelectric in nature. In the temperature range of 525 K to 675 K, unambiguous experimental evidence is shown for phase coexistence of orthorhombic paraelectric O1 phase (space group Cmcm) and orthorhombic ferroelectric O2 phase (space group Pmc21). The bp primitive lattice parameter of the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase (O2 phase) decreases, while the ap and cp primitive lattice parameters show normal increase with increase in temperature. Above 675 K, in the O1 phase, all lattice parameters come close to each other and increase continuously with increase of temperature, and around 925 K, ap parameter approaches bp parameter and thus the sample undergoes an orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition. Further as temperature increases, the cp lattice parameter decreases, and finally approaches to ap parameter, and the sample transform into the cubic phase. The continuous change in the lattice parameters reveals that the successive phase transformations from orthorhombic O1 to high temperature tetragonal phase and finally to the cubic phase are not of a strong first order type in nature. We argue that application of chemical pressure as a result of Li substitution in NaNbO3 matrix, favours the freezing of zone centre phonons over the zone boundary phonons that are known to freeze in pure NaNbO3 as function of temperature.

Lattice Dynamics and Thermal Expansion Behavior in Metal Cyanides, MCN (M=Cu, Ag, Au): Neutron Inelastic Scattering and First Principles Calculations

We report measurement of temperature dependence of phonon spectra in quasi one-dimensional metal cyanides MCN (M=Cu, Ag and Au). Ab initio lattice dynamics calculations have been performed to interpret the phonon-spectra as well as to understand the anamolous thermal expansion behavior in these compounds. We bring out the differences in the phonon mode behavior to explain the differences in the thermal expansion behavior among the three compounds. The chain-sliding modes are found to contribute maximum to the negative thermal expansion along c axis in the Cu and Ag compounds, while the same modes contribute to positive thermal expansion in the Au compound. Several low energy transverse modes lead to positive thermal expansion along a and b axis in all the compounds. The calculated elastic constants and Born effective charges are correlated with the difference in nature of bonding among these metal cyanides.

New Insights into the Compressibility and High-Pressure Stability of Ni(CN)2 from Neutron Diffraction, Raman Spectroscopy and Inelastic Neutron Scattering

The layered structure of tetragonal Ni(CN)2, consisting of square-planar Ni(CN)4 units linked in the a-b plane, with no true periodicity along the c-axis, is expected to show anisotropic compression on the application of pressure. High-pressure neutron diffraction (elastic) and inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed on polycrystalline Ni(CN)2 to investigate its compressibility and stability. The intralayer a lattice parameter does not show any appreciable variation with increase of pressure up to 2.7 kbar. Above this pressure value, a decrease in a is observed. The c lattice parameter decreases slowly up to 1 kbar, then decreases sharply up to 20 kbar. It does not show any significant variation with further pressure increase up to 50 kbar. The response of the lattice parameters to the applied pressure is strongly anisotropic as the interlayer spacing (along the c-axis) shows a significantly larger contraction than the a-b plane. The experimental pressure dependence of the volume data is fitted to a bulk modulus, B0, of 1050 (20) kbar over the pressure range 0-1 kbar, and to 154 (2) kbar in the range 1-50 kbar. The change in the slope of the lattice parameters at 1 kbar is also supported by high-pressure Raman measurements, which indicate a phase transition at 1 kbar. Probably arising from a change in the CN ordering within the Ni(CN)2 layers. Raman measurements, performed up to 200 kbar, highlight the possible existence of a second phase transition taking place at about 70 kbar. Our neutron inelastic scattering measurements of the pressure dependence of the phonon spectra performed up to 2.7 kbar, also support the occurrence of a phase transition at low pressure.

Phonons and Stability of Infinite-Layer Iron Oxides SrFeO2 and CaFeO2

We present detailed ab-initio lattice dynamical analysis of the Fe-O infinite-layer compounds CaFeO2 and SrFeO2 in various magnetic configurations. These indicate strong spin-phonon coupling in SrFeO2 in contrast to that in case of CaFeO2. Powder neutron inelastic scattering experiments on SrFeO2 have also been performed at temperatures from 5 K to 353 K in the antiferromagnetic phase and analyzed using the ab-initio calculations. These suggest distortion of the ideal infinite planer structure above 300 K. From our ab-initio calculations in SrFeO2 as a function of volume, we suggest that the distortion in SrFeO2 above 300 K is similar to that known in CaFeO2 at ambient conditions. The distortion of the planer structure of CaFeO2 involves doubling of the planer unit cell that may be usually expected to be due to a soft phonon mode at the M-point (1/2 1/2 0). However, our ab-initio calculations show quite unusually that all the M-point (1/2 1/2 0) phonons are stable, but two stable M3+ and M2-modes anharmonically couple with an unstable Bu mode at the zone centre and lead to the cell doubling and the distorted structure. Magnetic exchange interactions in both the compounds have been computed on the basis of the ideal planar structure (P4/mmm space group) and with increasing amplitude of the Bu phonon mode. These reveal that the magnetic exchange interactions reduce significantly with increasing distortion. We have extended the ab-initio phonon calculation to high pressures, which reveal that, above 20 GPa of pressure, the undistorted planer CaFeO2 becomes dynamically stable. We also report computed phonon spectra in SrFeO3 that has a cubic structure, which is useful to understand the role of the difference in geometry of oxygen atoms around the Fe atom with respect to planer SrFeO2.

Spin-Phonon Coupling and High Pressure Phase Transitions of RMnO3 (R= Ca and Pr): An Inelastic Neutron Scattering and First Principle Studies

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements over 7-1251 K in CaMnO3 covering various phase transitions, and over 6-150 K in PrMnO3 covering the magnetic transition. The excitations around 20 meV in CaMnO3 and at 17 meV in PrMnO3 are found to be associated with magnetic origin. In spite of similarity of the structure of the two compounds, the neutron inelastic spectrum of PrMnO3 exhibits broad features at 150 K unlike well-defined peaks in the spectrum of CaMnO3. This might result from the difference in nature of interactions in the two compounds (magnetic and Jahn-Teller distortion). The interpretation and analysis of the observed phonon spectra have been performed using ab-initio phonon calculations. We also discuss the effect of pressure on the structural distortions in the orthorhombic phase of CaMnO3 and PrMnO3. On application of pressure, we found that the variations of Mn-O distances are isotropic for CaMnO3 and highly anisotropic for PrMnO3. The calculated structure as a function of pressure in PrMnO3 shows that suppression of Jahn-Teller distortion and insulator to metal transition occurs simultaneously. Our calculations show that this transition may not be associated with the occurrence of the tetragonal phase above 20 GPa as reported in the literature, since the tetragonal phase is found to be dynamically unstable although it is found to be energetically favored over the orthorhombic phase above 20 GPa. CaMnO3 does not show any phase transition up to 60 GPa.

Inelastic Neutron Scattering Studies of Phonon Spectra and Simulations in Tungstates, AWO4 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca and Pb)

Lattice dynamics and high pressure phase transitions in AWO4 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca and Pb) have been investigated using inelastic neutron scattering experiments, ab-initio density functional theory calculations and extensive molecular dynamics simulations. The vibrational modes that are internal to WO4 tetrahedra occur at the highest energies consistent with the relative stability of WO4 tetrahedra. The neutron data and the ab-initio calculations are found to be in excellent agreement. The neutron and structural data are used to develop and validate an interatomic potential model. The model is used for classical molecular dynamics simulations to study their response to high pressure. We have calculated the enthalpies of the scheelite and fergusonite phases as a function of pressure, which confirms that the scheelite to fergusonite transition is second order in nature. With increase in pressure, there is a gradual change in the AO8 polyhedra, while there is no apparent change in the WO4 tetrahedra. We found that that all the four tungstates amorphize at high pressure. This is in good agreement with available experimental observations which show amorphization at around 45 GPa in BaWO4 and 40 GPa in CaWO4. On amorphization, there is an abrupt increase in the coordination of the W atom while the bisdisphenoids around A atom are considerably distorted. The pair correlation functions of the various atom pairs corroborate these observations. Our observations aid in predicting the pressure of amorphization in SrWO4 and PbWO4, which have not been experimentally reported.

Spin-Phonon Coupling, High Pressure Phase Transitions and Thermal Expansion of Multiferroic GaFeO3: A Combined First Principles and Inelastic Neutron Scattering Study

We have carried out an extensive phonon study on multiferroic GaFeO3 to elucidate its dynamical behavior. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are performed over a wide temperature range, 150 to 1198 K. First principles lattice dynamical calculations are done for the sake of the analysis and interpretation of the observations. The comparison of the phonon spectra from magnetic and non-magnetic calculations highlights pronounced differences. The energy range of the vibrational atomistic contributions of the Fe and O ions are found to differ significantly in the two calculation types. Therefore, magnetism induced by the active spin degrees of freedom of Fe cations plays a key role in stabilizing the structure and dynamics of GaFeO3. Moreover, the computed enthalpy in various phases of GaFeO3 is used to gain deeper insights into the high pressure phase stability of this material. Further, the volume dependence of the phonon spectra is used to determine its thermal expansion behavior.

Evidence for anomalous structural behavior in CaFe2As2

The structural properties of the CaFe2As2 have been investigated by x-ray and neutron powder diffraction techniques as a function of temperature. Unambiguous experimental evidence is shown for coexistence of tetragonal and orthorhombic phases below 170 K in contrast to existing literature. Detailed Rietveld analyses of thermo-diffractograms show that the sample does not transform completely in to the orthorhombic phase at the lowest temperature even though it is the majority phase. We have found that the unit cell volume of the orthorhombic phase is higher compared to that of the tetragonal phase for all the temperatures. X-ray data on CaFe2As2 shows anomalous (at) lattice parameter contraction with increasing temperature and phase co-existence behavior below 170 K unlike other members of the 122 family of compounds like SrFe2As2 and EuFe2As2. Temperature dependent magnetization of polycrystalline CaFe2As2 sample show weak anomalies below 170 K. This behavior of the polycrystalline sample is in contrast to that of a single crystal reported earlier.

Negative Thermal Expansion in cubic ZrW2O8: Role of Phonons in Entire Brillouin Zone From ab-inito Calculations

We report ab-inito density functional theory calculation of phonons in cubic phase of ZrW2O8 in the entire Brillouin zone and identify specific anharmonic phonons that are responsible for large negative thermal expansion (NTE) in terms of translation, rotation and distortion of WO4 and ZrO6. We have used density functional calculations to interpret the experimental phonon spectra as a function of pressure and temperature as reported in literature. We discover that the phonons showing anharmonicty with temperature are different from those showing anharmonicity with pressure although both are of similar frequencies. Only the latter phonons are associated with NTE. Therefore the cubic and/or quadratic anharmonicity of phonons is not relevant to NTE but just the volume dependence of frequencies. The calculations are able to reproduce the observed anomalous trends, namely, the softening of the low frequency peak at about 5 meV in the phonon spectra with pressure and its hardening with temperature, while both the changes involve a compression of the lattice.

Phonon Dynamics and Inelastic Neutron Scattering of Sodium Niobate

Sodium niobate (NaNbO3) exhibits most complex sequence of structural phase transitions in perovskite family and therefore provides as excellent model system for understanding the mechanism of structural phase transitions. We report temperature dependence of inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonon densities of states in sodium niobate. The measurements are carried out in various crystallographic phases of this material at various temperatures from 300 K to 1048 K. The phonon spectra exhibit peaks centered around 19, 37, 51, 70 and 105 meV. Interestingly, the peak around 70 meV shifts significantly towards lower energy with increasing temperature, while the other peaks do not exhibit an appreciable change. The phonon spectra at 783 K show prominent change and become more diffusive as compared to those at 303 K. In order to better analyze these features, we have performed first principles lattice dynamics calculations based on the density functional theory. The computed phonon density of states is found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. Based on our calculation we are able to assign the characteristic Raman modes in the antiferroelectric phase to the A1g symmetry, which are due to the folding of the T (w=95 cm-1) and delta(w=129 cm-1) points of the cubic Brillouin zone.

Phonons and Thermodynamics of LiMPO4 (M=Mn, Fe)

Lithium transition metal phospho-olivines are useful electrode materials, owing to their stability, high safety, low cost and cyclability. We report phonon studies using neutron inelastic scattering experiments, ab-initio density functional theory calculations and potential model calculations on LiMPO4 (M=Mn, Fe) at ambient and high temperature to understand the microscopic picture of Li sub-lattice. The experiments are in good agreement with calculations. The lattice dynamics calculations indicate instability of a zone-centre as well as zone-boundary modes along (100) at volume corresponding to high temperature. The unstable phonon modes show mainly large vibration of Li atoms in the x-z plane of the orthorhombic structure (space group Pbnm). Molecular dynamics simulations with increasing temperature indicate large mean square displacement of Li as compared to other constituent atoms. The computed pair-correlations between various atom pairs show that there is local disorder occurring in the lithium sub-lattice with increasing temperature, while other pairs show minimal changes. The results find the two compounds to be thermally stable up to high temperatures, which is a desirable trait for its battery applications.

Phonons, Nature of Bonding and Their Relation to Anomalous Thermal Expansion Behavior of M2O (M=Au, Ag, Cu)

We report a comparative study of the dynamics of Cu2O, Ag2O and Au2O (i.e. M2O with M = Au, Ag and Cu) using first principle calculations based on the density functional theory. Here for the first time we show that the nature of chemical bonding and open space in the unit cell are directly related to the magnitude of thermal expansion coefficient. A good match between the calculated phonon density of states and that derived from inelastic neutron scattering measurements is obtained for Cu2O and Ag2O. The calculated thermal expansions of Ag2O and Cu2O are negative, in agreement with available experimental data, while it is found to be positive for Au2O. We identify the low energy phonon modes responsible for this anomalous thermal expansion. We further calculate the charge density in the three compounds and find that the magnitude of the ionic character of the Ag2O, Cu2O, and Au2O crystals is in decreasing order, with an Au-O bond of covalent nature strongly rigidifying the Au4O tetrahedral units. The nature of the chemical bonding is also found to be an important ingredient to understand the large shift of the phonon frequencies of these solids with pressure and temperature. In particular, the quartic component of the anharmonic term in the crystal potential is able to account for the temperature dependence of the phonon modes.

Spin-Lattice Coupling in K0.8Fe1.6Se2 and KFe2Se2: Inelastic Neutron Scattering and ab-initio Phonon Calculations

We report measurements of the temperature dependence of phonon densities of states in K0.8Fe1.6Se2 using inelastic neutron scattering technique. While cooling down to 150 K, a phonon peak splitting around 25 meV is observed and a new peak appears at 31 meV. The measurements support the recent Raman and infra-red measurements indicating a lowering of symmetry of K0.8Fe1.6Se2 upon cooling below 250 K. Ab-initio phonon calculations have been carried out for K0.8Fe1.6Se2 and KFe2Se2. The comparison of the phonon spectra as obtained from the magnetic as well as non magnetic calculations show pronounced differences. We show that in the two calculations the energy range of the vibrational contribution from both Fe and Se are quite different. We conclude that Fe magnetism is correlated to the phonon dynamics and it plays an important role in stabilizing the structure of K0.8Fe1.6Se2 as well as that of KFe2Se2. The calculations highlight the presence of low energy librational modes in K0.8Fe1.6Se2 as compared to KFe2Se2.

High-Temperature Phonon Spectra of Multiferroic BiFeO3 from Inelastic Neutron Spectroscopy

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the phonon spectra in a pure powder sample of the multiferroic material BiFeO3. A high-temperature range was covered to unravel the changes in the phonon dynamics across the Neel (T_N ~ 650 K) and Curie (T_C ~ 1100 K) temperatures. Experimental results are accompanied by ab-initio lattice dynamical simulations of phonon density of states to enable microscopic interpretations of the observed data. The calculations reproduce well the observed vibrational features and provide the partial atomic vibrational components. Our results reveal clearly the signature of three different phase transitions both in the diffraction patterns and phonon spectra. The phonon modes are found to be most affected by the transition at the T_C. The spectroscopic evidence for the existence of a different structural modification just below the decomposition limit (T_D ~ 1240 K) is unambiguous indicating strong structural changes that may be related to oxygen vacancies and concomitant Fe3+ to Fe2+ reduction and spin transition.

Phonons and Colossal Thermal Expansion Behavior of Ag3Co(CN)6 and Ag3Fe(CN)6

Recently colossal positive volume thermal expansion has been found in the framework compounds Ag3Co(CN)6 and Ag3Fe(CN)6. Phonon spectra have been measured using the inelastic neutron scattering technique as a function of temperature and pressure. The data has been analyzed using ab-initio calculations. We find that the bonding is very similar in both compounds. At ambient pressure modes in the intermediate frequency part of the vibrational spectra in the Co compound are shifted to slightly higher energies as compared to the Fe compound. The temperature dependence of the phonon spectra gives evidence for large explicit anharmonic contribution to the total anharmonicity for low-energy modes below 5 meV. We found that modes are mainly affected by the change in the size of unit cell, which in turn changes the bond lengths and vibrational frequencies. Thermal expansion has been calculated via the volume dependence of phonon spectra. Our analysis indicates that Ag phonon modes in the energy range from 2 to 5 meV are strongly anharmonic and major contributors to thermal expansion in both compounds. The application of pressure hardens the low-energy part of the phonon spectra involving Ag vibrations and confirms the highly anharmonic nature of these modes.

Suppression of Antiferroelectric State in NaNbO3 at High Pressure from In Situ Neutron Diffraction

We report direct experimental evidence of antiferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition under pressure in NaNbO3 using neutron diffraction at room temperature. The paraelectric phase is found to stabilize above 8 GPa and its crystal structure has been determined in orthorhombic symmetry with space group Pbnm. The variation of the structural parameters of the both orthorhombic phases as a function of pressure was determined. We have not found evidence for structural phase transition around 2 GPa as previously suggested in the literature based on Raman scattering experiments, however, significant change in Nb-O-Nb bond angles are found around this pressure. The response of the lattice parameters to pressure is strongly anisotropic with a largest contraction along <100>. The structural phase transition around ~ 8 GPa is followed by an anomalous increase in the orthorhombic strain and tilt angle associated with the R point (q= 1/2 1/2 1/2). Ab-initio calculation of the enthalpy in the various phases of NaNbO3 is able to predict the phase transition pressure well.

Behavior of Lithium Oxide at Superionic Transition: First Principles and Molecular Dynamics Studies

We report studies on the vibrational and elastic behavior of lithium oxide, Li2O around its superionic transition temperature. Phonon frequencies calculated using the ab-initio and empirical potential model are in excellent agreement with the reported experimental data. Further, volume dependence of phonon dispersion relation has been calculated, which indicates softening of zone boundary transverse acoustic phonon mode along [110] at volume corresponding to the superionic transition in Li2O. The instability of phonon mode could be a precursor leading to the dynamical disorder of the lithium sub lattice. Empirical potential model calculations have been carried out to deduce the probable direction of lithium diffusion by constructing a super cell consisting of 12000 atoms. The barrier energy for lithium ion diffusion from one lattice site to another at ambient and elevated temperature has been computed. Barrier energy considerations along various symmetry directions indicate that [001] is the most favourable direction for lithium diffusion in the fast ion phase. This result corroborates our observation of dynamical instability in the transverse mode along (110) wave vector. Using molecular dynamics simulations we have studied the temperature variation of elastic constants, which are important to the high-temperature stability of lithium oxide.

Pressure dependence of the low- temperature crystal structure and phase transition behaviour of CaFeAsF and SrFeAsF: A synchrotron x-ray diffraction study

We report systematic investigation of high pressure crystal structures and structural phase transition upto 46 GPa in CaFeAsF and 40 GPa in SrFeAsF at 40 K using powder synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments and Rietveld analysis of the diffraction data. We find that CaFeAsF undergoes orthorhombic to monoclinic phase transition at Pc = 13.7 GPa while increasing pressure. SrFeAsF exhibits coexistence of orthorhombic and monoclinic phases over a large pressure range from 9 to 39 GPa. The coexistence of the two phases indicates that the transition is of first order in nature. Unlike in the 122 compounds (BaFe2As2 & CaFe2As2) we do not find any collapse tetragonal transition. The transition to a lower symmetry phase (orthorhombic to monoclinic) in 1111 compounds under pressure is in contrast with the transition to a high symmetry phase (orthorhombic to tetragonal) in 122 type compounds. On heating from 40 K at high pressure, CaFeAsF undergoes monoclinic to tetragonal phase transition around 25 GPa and 200 K. Further, it does not show any post-tetragonal phase transition and remains in the tetragonal phase upto 25 GPa at 300 K. The dPc/dT is found to be positive for the CaFeAsF & CaFe2As2, however the same was not found in case of BaFe2As2. We discuss observations of structural evolution in the context of superconductivity in these and other Fe-based compounds. It appears that the closeness of the Fe-As-Fe bond angle to its ideal tetrahedral value of 109.470 might be associated with occurrence of superconductivity at low temperature.

Investigation of phonon dynamics of perovskite multiferroic manganites: RMnO3 (R=Tb, Dy, Ho)

We have used a shell model to study the phonon dynamics of multiferroic manganites RMnO3 (R= Tb, Dy, Ho). The calculated phonon dynamical properties, crystal structure, Raman frequencies and specific heat are found to be in good agreement with the available experimental data. Besides, the phonon density of states, elastic constants and phonon dispersion curves along high symmetry directions (sigma, delta and lambda) have also been computed. A zone-center imaginary Au mode is revealed in these phonon dispersion curves, which indicates the occurrence of metastability of the perovskite phase. The Gibbs free energy values of orthorhombic phase, when compared with those of hexagonal phase, indicate the possibility of coexistence of these two phases of these multiferroic manganites under ambient conditions.

Origin of Large Dielectric Constant with Large Remnant Polarization and Evidence of Magnetoelectric Coupling in Multiferroic La modified BiFeO3-PbTiO3 Solid Solution

The presence of superlattice reflections and detailed analyses of the powder neutron and x-ray diffraction data reveal that La rich (BF$_{0.50}$-LF$_{0.50}$)$_{0.50}$-(PT)$_{0.50}$ (BF-LF-PT) has ferroelectric rhombohedral crystal structure with space group \textit{$R3c$} at ambient conditions. The temperature dependence of lattice parameters, tilt angle, calculated polarization $(P_{s})$, volume, and integrated intensity of superlattice and magnetic reflections show an anomaly around 170 K. Impedance spectroscopy, dielectric and ac conductivity measurements were performed in temperature range $473K \leq T \leq 573K$ to probe the origin of large remnant polarization and frequency dependent broad transitions with large dielectric constant near $T_c^{FE}$. Results of impedance spectroscopy measurements clearly show contributions of both grain and grain boundaries throughout the frequency range ($10^{3}$ Hz$\leq f\leq 10^{7} $ Hz). It could be concluded that the grain boundaries are more resistive and capacitive as compared to the grains, resulting in inhomogeneities in the sample causing broad frequency dependent dielectric anomalies. Enhancement in dielectric constant and remnant polarization values are possibly due to space charge polarization caused by piling of charges at the interface of grains and grain boundaries. The imaginary parts of dielectric constant ($ε^{\prime\prime}$) Vs frequency data were fitted using Maxwell-Wagner model at $T_c^{FE}(\sim 523$K) and model fits very well with the data up to $10^{5}$ Hz. Magnetodielectric measurements prove that the sample starts exhibiting magnetoelectric coupling at $\sim 170$ K, which is also validated by neutron diffraction data.

Phase stability and structural temperature dependence in sodium niobate: A high resolution powder neutron diffraction study

We report investigation of structural phase transitions in technologically important material sodium niobate as a function of temperature on heating over 300-1075 K. Our high resolution powder neutron diffraction data show variety of structural phase transitions ranging from non-polar antiferrodistortive to ferroelectric and antiferroelectric in nature. Discontinuous jump in lattice parameters is found only at 633 K that indicates that the transition of orthorhombic antiferroelectric P (space group Pbcm) to R (space group Pbnm) phase is first order in nature, while other successive phase transitions are of second order. New superlattice reflections appear at 680 K (R phase) and 770 K (S phase) that could be indexed using an intermediate long-period modulated orthorhombic structure whose lattice parameter along <001> direction is 3 and 6 times that of the CaTiO3-like Pbnm structure respectively. The correlation of superlattice reflections with the phonon instability is discussed. The critical exponent (β) for the second order tetragonal to cubic phase transition at 950 K, corresponds to a value β$\approx 1/3$, as obtained from the temperature variation of order parameters (tilt angle and intensity of superlattice reflections). It is argued that this exponent is due to a second order phase transition close to a tricritical point. Based on our detailed temperature dependent neutron diffraction studies, the phase diagram of sodium niobate is presented that resolves existing ambiguities in the literature.

Phonon dynamics in SrFe2As2 and SrFeAsF parent pnictide compounds: How different/similar when compared to Ca- and Ba-compounds?

We report detailed measurements of temperature dependence and ab initio lattice dynamical calculations of the phonon density-of-states of two Sr based iron pnictide parent compounds; SrFe2As2 and SrFeAsF. Although both compounds undergo a magnetic as well as a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transitions, no drastic change of their phonon spectra is found in the temperature range from 2 to 300 K.. In both the systems the Fe-As stretching modes at 32 meV react to the temperature change and shift towards higher energies with decreasing temperature. Furthermore, we found that in the antiferromagnetic phase of SrFe2As2 at 180 K a peak at 25 meV, due to Fe vibrations, moves slightly to higher energies and become narrower on cooling from 300 K. However we did not find any evidence of softening of low energy phonon modes in both SrFe2As2 and SrFeAsF on decreasing the temperature from 300 K in their paramagnetic phase. This is contrary to our earlier observation of phonon softening in CaFe2As2, Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 and Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2. For the sake of comparison, the previously studied Ca- and Ba-cases are also presented and the role of the magnetic ordering on the calculated phonon spectra in these two families of pnictides is reported.

Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction Study of BaFe2As2 and CaFe2As2 at High Pressures up to 56 GPa: Ambient and Low-Temperatures Down to 33 K

We report high pressure powder synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies on MFe2As2 (M=Ba, Ca) over a range of temperatures and pressures up to about 56 GPa using a membrane diamond anvil cell. A phase transition to a collapsed tetragonal phase is observed in both compounds upon compression. However, at 300 (33) K in the Ba-compound the transition occurs at 26 (29) GPa, which is a much higher pressure than 1.7 (0.3) GPa at 300 (40) K in the Ca-compound, due to its larger volume. It is important to note that the transition in both compounds occurs when they are compressed to almost the same value of the unit cell volume and attain similar ct/at ratios. We also show that the FeAs4 tetrahedra are much less compressible and more distorted in the collapsed tetragonal phase than their nearly regular shape in the ambient pressure phase. We present a detailed analysis of the pressure dependence of the structures as well as equation of states in these important BaFe2As2 and CaFe2As2 compounds.

Effects of magnetic doping and temperature dependence on phonon dynamics in CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF compounds (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12)

We report detailed measurements of composition as well as temperature dependence of the phonon density-of-states in a new series of FeAs compounds with composition CaFe1\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12). The composition as well as temperature dependence of phonon spectra for CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) compounds have been measured using time of flight IN4C and IN6 spectrometers at ILL, France. The comparison of phonon spectra at 300 K in these compounds shows that acoustic phonon modes up to 12 meV harden in the doped compounds in comparison to the parent CaFeAsF. While intermediate energy phonon modes from 15 meV to 25 meV are also found to shift towards high energies only in the 12 % Co doped CaFeAsF compound. The experimental results for CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) are quite different from our previous phonon studies on parent and superconducting MFe2As2 (M=Ba, Ca, Sr) where low-energy acoustic phonon modes do not react with doping, while the phonon spectra in the intermediate range from 15 to 25 K are found to soften in these compounds. We argue that stronger spin phonon interaction play an important role for the emergence of superconductivity in these compounds. The lattice dynamics of CaFe\_{1-x}Co\_{x}AsF (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12) compounds is also investigated using the ab-initio as well as shell model phonon calculations. We show that the nature of the interaction between the Ca and the Fe-As layers in CaFeAsF compounds is quite different compared with our previous studies on CaFe2As2.

Phonon spectra in CaFe2As2 and Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2: Measurement of the pressure and temperature dependence and comparison with ab-initio and shell model calculations

We report the pressure and temperature dependence of the phonon density-of-states in superconducting Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 (Tc=21 K) and the parent compound CaFe2As2, using inelastic neutron scattering. We observe no significant change in the phonon spectrum for Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2 at 295 K up to pressures of 5 kbar. The phonon spectrum for CaFe2As2 shows softening of the low-energy modes by about 1 meV when decreasing the temperature from 300 K to 180 K. There is no appreciable change in the phonon density of states across the structural and anti-ferromagnetic phase transition at 172 K. These results, combined with our earlier temperature dependent phonon density of states measurements for Ca0.6Na0.4Fe2As2, indicate that the softening of low-energy phonon modes in these compounds may be due to the interaction of phonons with electron or short-range spin fluctuations in the normal state of the superconducting compound as well as in the parent compound. The phonon spectra are analyzed with ab-initio and empirical model calculations giving partial densities of states and dispersion relations.

Pressure dependence of phonon modes across the tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal phase transition in CaFe2As2

The pressure dependence of a large number of phonon modes in CaFe2As2 with energies covering the full range of the phonon spectrum has been studied using inelastic x-ray and neutron scattering. The observed phonon frequency changes are in general rather small despite the sizable changes of the lattice parameters at the phase transition. This indicates that the bonding properties are not profoundly altered by the phase transition. The transverse acoustic phonons propagating along the c-direction are an exception because they stiffen very significantly in response to the large contraction of the c-axis. The lattice parameters are found to change significantly as a function of pressure before, during and after the first-order phase transition. However, the frequencies change nearly uniformly with the change in the lattice parameters due to pressure, with no regard specifically to the first-order phase transition. Density functional theory describes the frequencies in both the zero pressure and in the collapsed phase in a satisfactory way if based on the respective crystal structures.

Competing antiferroelectric and ferroelectric interactions in NaNbO3 : Neutron diffraction and theoretical studies

Neutron diffraction studies using powder samples have been used to understand the complex sequence of low temperature phase transitions of NaNbO3 in the temperature range from 12 K-350 K. Detailed Rietveld analysis of the diffraction data reveal that the antiferroelectric to ferroelectric phase transition occurs on cooling around 73 K while the reverse ferroelectric to antiferroelectric transition occurs on heating at 245 K. However, the former transformation is not complete till down to 12 K and there is unambiguous evidence for the presence of the ferroelectric R3c phase coexisting with an antiferroelectic phase (Pbcm) over a wide range of temperatures. The coexisting phases and reported anomalous smearing of the dielectric response akin to dipole glasses and relaxors observed in the same temperature range are consistent with competing ferroelectric and antiferroelectric interactions in NaNbO3. We have carried out theoretical lattice dynamical calculations which reveal that the free energies of the antiferroelectric Pbcm and ferroelectric R3c phases are nearly identical over a wide range of temperature. The small energy difference between the two phases is of interest as it explains the observed coexistence of these phases over a wide range of temperature. The computed double well depths and energy barriers from paraelectric Pm m to antiferroelectric Pbcm and ferroelectric R3c phases in NaNbO3 are also quite similar, although the ferroelectric R3c phase has a slightly lower energy.

Fast ion diffusion, superionic conductivity and phase transitions of the nuclear materials UO2 and Li2O

Lattice dynamics and molecular dynamics studies of the oxides UO2 and Li2O in their normal as well as superionic phase are reported. Lattice dynamics calculations have been carried out using a shell model in the quasiharmonic approximation. The calculated elastic constants, phonon frequencies and specific heat are in good agreement with reported experimental data, which help validate the interatomic potentials required for undertaking molecular dynamics simulations. The calculated free energies reveal high pressure fluorite to cottunite phase transitions at 70 GPa for UO2 and anti-fluorite to anti-cotunnite phase transformation at 25 GPa for Li2O, in agreement with reported experiments. Molecular dynamics studies shed important insights into the mechanisms of diffusion and superionic behavior at high temperatures. The calculated superionic transition temperature of Li2O is 1000 K, while that of UO2 is 2300 K.
