In the present paper, we have studied the Matsumoto change L(x,y)=L(x,y)−β(x,y)L2(x,y) with an \textsl{h-}vector bi(x,y). We have derived some fundamental tensors for this transformation. We have also obtained the necessary and sufficient condition for which the Cartan connection coefficients for both the spaces Fn=(Mn,L) and Fn=(Mn,L) are same.
Recently, we have studied the Finsler space with h-Matsumoto change and found Cartan connection for the transformed space [2]. In this paper, we have discussed certain geometrical properties of the hypersurface of a Finsler space for the h-Matsumoto change.
The sensitivity of ferroelectric domain walls to external stimuli makes them functional entities in nanoelectronic devices. Specifically, optically driven domain reconfiguration with in-plane polarization is advantageous and thus highly sought. Here, we show the existence of in-plane polarized sub-domains imitating a single domain state and reversible optical control of its domain wall movement in a single-crystal of ferroelectric BaTiO3. Similar optical control in the domain configuration of non-polar ferroelastic material indicates long-range ferroelectric polarization is not essential for the optical control of domain wall movement. Instead, flexoelectricity is found to be an essential ingredient for the optical control of the domain configuration and hence, ferroelastic materials would be another possible candidate for nanoelectronic device applications.
Cu2Se and Cu2S are excellent model systems of superionic conductors with large diffusion coefficients that have been reported to exhibit different solid-liquid-like Cu-ion diffusion. In this paper, we clarify the atomic dynamics of these compounds with temperature-dependent ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments. Using the dynamical structure factor and Van-Hove correlation function, we interrogate the jump-time, hopping length distribution and associated diffusion coefficients. In cubic-Cu2Se at 500 K, we find solid-like diffusion with Cu-jump lengths matching well the first-neighbour Cu-Cu distance of ~3 Å in the crystal, and clearly defined optic phonons involving Cu-vibrations. Above 700 K, the jump-length distribution becomes a broad maximum cantered around 4 Å, spanning the first and second neighbour lattice distances, and a concurrent broadening of the Cu-phonon density of states. Further, above 900 K, the Cu-diffusion becomes close to liquid-like, with distributions of Cu-atoms continuously connecting crystal sites, while the vibrational modes involving Cu motions are highly damped, though still not fully over-damped as in a liquid. At low temperatures, the solid-like diffusion is consistent with previous X-ray diffraction and quasielastic neutron scattering experiments, while the higher-temperature observation of the liquid-like diffusion is in agreement with previous AIMD simulations. We also report AIMD simulations in Cu2S in the hexagonal and cubic superionic phases, and observe similar solid and liquid-like diffusion at low- and high-temperatures, respectively. The calculated ionic-conductivity is in fair agreement with reported experimental values.
The LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the Virgo Collaboration have cataloged eleven confidently detected gravitational-wave events during the first two observing runs of the advanced detector era. All eleven events were consistent with being from well-modeled mergers between compact stellar-mass objects: black holes or neutron stars. The data around the time of each of these events have been made publicly available through the gravitational-wave open science center. The entirety of the gravitational-wave strain data from the first and second observing runs have also now been made publicly available. There is considerable interest among the broad scientific community in understanding the data and methods used in the analyses. In this paper, we provide an overview of the detector noise properties and the data analysis techniques used to detect gravitational-wave signals and infer the source properties. We describe some of the checks that are performed to validate the analyses and results from the observations of gravitational-wave events. We also address concerns that have been raised about various properties of LIGO-Virgo detector noise and the correctness of our analyses as applied to the resulting data.
We present results on the mass, spin, and redshift distributions with phenomenological population models using the ten binary black hole mergers detected in the first and second observing runs completed by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. We constrain properties of the binary black hole (BBH) mass spectrum using models with a range of parameterizations of the BBH mass and spin distributions. We find that the mass distribution of the more massive black hole in such binaries is well approximated by models with no more than 1% of black holes more massive than 45M⊙, and a power law index of α=1.3−1.7+1.4 (90% credibility). We also show that BBHs are unlikely to be composed of black holes with large spins aligned to the orbital angular momentum. Modelling the evolution of the BBH merger rate with redshift, we show that it is at or increasing with redshift with 93% probability. Marginalizing over uncertainties in the BBH population, we find robust estimates of the BBH merger rate density of R=53.2−28.2+55.8 Gpc−3 yr−1 (90% credibility). As the BBH catalog grows in future observing runs, we expect that uncertainties in the population model parameters will shrink, potentially providing insights into the formation of black holes via supernovae, binary interactions of massive stars, stellar cluster dynamics, and the formation history of black holes across cosmic time.
We report investigation of phonons and oxygen diffusion in Bi2O3 and (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3. The phonon spectra have been measured in Bi2O3 at high temperatures up to 1083 K using inelastic neutron scattering. Ab-initio calculations have been used to compute the individual contributions of the constituent atoms in Bi2O3 and (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3 to the total phonon density of states. Our computed results indicate that as temperature is increased, there is a complete loss of sharp peak structure in the vibrational density of states. Ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations show that even at 1000 K in δ-phase Bi2O3, Bi-Bi correlations remain ordered in the crystalline lattice while the correlations between O-O show liquid like disordered behavior. In the case of (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3, the O-O correlations broadened at around 500 K indicating that oxygen conductivity is possible at such low temperatures in (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3 although the conductivity is much less than that observed in the undoped high temperature δ-phase of Bi2O3. This result is consistent with the calculated diffusion coefficients of oxygen and observation by QENS experiments. Our ab-initio molecular dynamics calculations predict that macroscopic diffusion is attainable in (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3 at much lower temperatures, which is more suited for technological applications. Our studies elucidate the easy directions of diffusion in δ-Bi2O3 and (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3.
We present a search for gravitational waves from 221 pulsars with rotation frequencies ≳10 Hz. We use advanced LIGO data from its first and second observing runs spanning 2015-2017, which provides the highest-sensitivity gravitational-wave data so far obtained. In this search we target emission from both the l=m=2 mass quadrupole mode, with a frequency at twice that of the pulsar's rotation, and from the l=2, m=1 mode, with a frequency at the pulsar rotation frequency. The search finds no evidence for gravitational-wave emission from any pulsar at either frequency. For the l=m=2 mode search, we provide updated upper limits on the gravitational-wave amplitude, mass quadrupole moment, and fiducial ellipticity for 167 pulsars, and the first such limits for a further 55. For 20 young pulsars these results give limits that are below those inferred from the pulsars' spin-down. For the Crab and Vela pulsars our results constrain gravitational-wave emission to account for less than 0.017% and 0.18% of the spin-down luminosity, respectively. For the recycled millisecond pulsar J0711-6830 our limits are only a factor of 1.3 above the spin-down limit, assuming the canonical value of 1038 kg m2 for the star's moment of inertia, and imply a gravitational-wave-derived upper limit on the star's ellipticity of 1.2×10−8. We also place new limits on the emission amplitude at the rotation frequency of the pulsars.
Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, such as binary neutron star and black hole mergers or core-collapse supernovae, can drive relativistic outflows, giving rise to non-thermal high-energy emission. High-energy neutrinos are signatures of such outflows. The detection of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from common sources could help establish the connection between the dynamics of the progenitor and the properties of the outflow. We searched for associated emission of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical transients with minimal assumptions using data from Advanced LIGO from its first observing run O1, and data from the ANTARES and IceCube neutrino observatories from the same time period. We focused on candidate events whose astrophysical origin could not be determined from a single messenger. We found no significant coincident candidate, which we used to constrain the rate density of astrophysical sources dependent on their gravitational wave and neutrino emission processes.
The Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observatories recently discovered gravitational waves from a binary neutron star inspiral. A short gamma-ray burst (GRB) that followed the merger of this binary was also recorded by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi-GBM), and the Anticoincidence Shield for the Spectrometer for the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL), indicating particle acceleration by the source. The precise location of the event was determined by optical detections of emission following the merger. We searched for high-energy neutrinos from the merger in the GeV--EeV energy range using the ANTARES, IceCube, and Pierre Auger Observatories. No neutrinos directionally coincident with the source were detected within ±500 s around the merger time. Additionally, no MeV neutrino burst signal was detected coincident with the merger. We further carried out an extended search in the direction of the source for high-energy neutrinos within the 14-day period following the merger, but found no evidence of emission. We used these results to probe dissipation mechanisms in relativistic outflows driven by the binary neutron star merger. The non-detection is consistent with model predictions of short GRBs observed at a large off-axis angle.
We present results from a search for gravitational-wave bursts coincident with a set of two core-collapse supernovae observed between 2007 and 2011. We employ data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), the Virgo gravitational-wave observatory, and the GEO 600 gravitational-wave observatory. The targeted core-collapse supernovae were selected on the basis of (1) proximity (within approximately 15 Mpc), (2) tightness of observational constraints on the time of core collapse that defines the gravitational-wave search window, and (3) coincident operation of at least two interferometers at the time of core collapse. We find no plausible gravitational-wave candidates. We present the probability of detecting signals from both astrophysically well-motivated and more speculative gravitational-wave emission mechanisms as a function of distance from Earth, and discuss the implications for the detection of gravitational waves from core-collapse supernovae by the upgraded Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors.
We present the results of a search for long-duration gravitational wave transients in two sets of data collected by the LIGO Hanford and LIGO Livingston detectors between November 5, 2005 and September 30, 2007, and July 7, 2009 and October 20, 2010, with a total observational time of 283.0 days and 132.9 days, respectively. The search targets gravitational wave transients of duration 10 - 500 s in a frequency band of 40 - 1000 Hz, with minimal assumptions about the signal waveform, polarization, source direction, or time of occurrence. All candidate triggers were consistent with the expected background; as a result we set 90% confidence upper limits on the rate of long-duration gravitational wave transients for different types of gravitational wave signals. For signals from black hole accretion disk instabilities, we set upper limits on the source rate density between 3.4×10−5 - 9.4×10−4 Mpc−3 yr−1 at 90% confidence. These are the first results from an all-sky search for unmodeled long-duration transient gravitational waves.
This paper presents updated estimates of source parameters for GW150914, a binary black-hole coalescence event detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) on September 14, 2015 [1]. Reference presented parameter estimation [2] of the source using a 13-dimensional, phenomenological precessing-spin model (precessing IMRPhenom) and a 11-dimensional nonprecessing effective-one-body (EOB) model calibrated to numerical-relativity simulations, which forces spin alignment (nonprecessing EOBNR). Here we present new results that include a 15-dimensional precessing-spin waveform model (precessing EOBNR) developed within the EOB formalism. We find good agreement with the parameters estimated previously [2], and we quote updated component masses of 35−3+5M⊙ and 30−4+3M⊙ (where errors correspond to 90% symmetric credible intervals). We also present slightly tighter constraints on the dimensionless spin magnitudes of the two black holes, with a primary spin estimate 0.65 and a secondary spin estimate 0.75 at 90% probability. Reference [2] estimated the systematic parameter-extraction errors due to waveform-model uncertainty by combining the posterior probability densities of precessing IMRPhenom and nonprecessing EOBNR. Here we find that the two precessing-spin models are in closer agreement, suggesting that these systematic errors are smaller than previously quoted.
We report on a comprehensive all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency band 100-1500 Hz and with a frequency time derivative in the range of [−1.18,+1.00]×10−8 Hz/s. Such a signal could be produced by a nearby spinning and slightly non-axisymmetric isolated neutron star in our galaxy. This search uses the data from the Initial LIGO sixth science run and covers a larger parameter space with respect to any past search. A Loosely Coherent detection pipeline was applied to follow up weak outliers in both Gaussian (95% recovery rate) and non-Gaussian (75% recovery rate) bands. No gravitational wave signals were observed, and upper limits were placed on their strength. Our smallest upper limit on worst-case (linearly polarized) strain amplitude h0 is 9.7×10−25 near 169 Hz, while at the high end of our frequency range we achieve a worst-case upper limit of 5.5×10−24. Both cases refer to all sky locations and entire range of frequency derivative values.
We compare GW150914 directly to simulations of coalescing binary black holes in full general relativity, accounting for all the spin-weighted quadrupolar modes, and separately accounting for all the quadrupolar and octopolar modes. Consistent with the posterior distributions reported in LVC_PE[1] (at 90% confidence), we find the data are compatible with a wide range of nonprecessing and precessing simulations. Followup simulations performed using previously-estimated binary parameters most resemble the data. Comparisons including only the quadrupolar modes constrain the total redshifted mass Mz \in [64 - 82M_\odot], mass ratio q = m2/m1 \in [0.6,1], and effective aligned spin χ_eff \in [-0.3, 0.2], where χ_{eff} = (S1/m1 + S2/m2) \cdot\hat{L} /M. Including both quadrupolar and octopolar modes, we find the mass ratio is even more tightly constrained. Simulations with extreme mass ratios and effective spins are highly inconsistent with the data, at any mass. Several nonprecessing and precessing simulations with similar mass ratio and χ_{eff} are consistent with the data. Though correlated, the components' spins (both in magnitude and directions) are not significantly constrained by the data. For nonprecessing binaries, interpolating between simulations, we reconstruct a posterior distribution consistent with previous results. The final black hole's redshifted mass is consistent with Mf,z between 64.0 - 73.5M_\odot and the final black hole's dimensionless spin parameter is consistent with af = 0.62 - 0.73. As our approach invokes no intermediate approximations to general relativity and can strongly reject binaries whose radiation is inconsistent with the data, our analysis provides a valuable complement to LVC_PE[1].
On September 14, 2015 at 09:50:45 UTC the two detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) simultaneously observed the binary black hole merger GW150914. We report the results of a matched-filter search using relativistic models of compact-object binaries that recovered GW150914 as the most significant event during the coincident observations between the two LIGO detectors from September 12 to October 20, 2015. GW150914 was observed with a matched filter signal-to-noise ratio of 24 and a false alarm rate estimated to be less than 1 event per 203 000 years, equivalent to a significance greater than 5.1 σ.
In this paper, we studied a Finsler space whose metric is given by an h-exponential change and obtain the Cartan connection coefficients for the change. We also find the necessary and sufficient condition for an h-exponential change of Finsler metric to be projective.
Recently we have obtained the Cartan connection for the Finsler space whose metric is given by an exponential change with an h-vector. In this paper, we discuss certain geometric properties of a Finslerian hyperspace subjected to an h-exponential change of metric.
A gravitational-wave (GW) transient was identified in data recorded by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors on 2015 September 14. The event, initially designated G184098 and later given the name GW150914, is described in detail elsewhere. By prior arrangement, preliminary estimates of the time, significance, and sky location of the event were shared with 63 teams of observers covering radio, optical, near-infrared, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths with ground- and space-based facilities. In this Letter we describe the low-latency analysis of the GW data and present the sky localization of the first observed compact binary merger. We summarize the follow-up observations reported by 25 teams via private Gamma-ray Coordinates Network circulars, giving an overview of the participating facilities, the GW sky localization coverage, the timeline and depth of the observations. As this event turned out to be a binary black hole merger, there is little expectation of a detectable electromagnetic (EM) signature. Nevertheless, this first broadband campaign to search for a counterpart of an Advanced LIGO source represents a milestone and highlights the broad capabilities of the transient astronomy community and the observing strategies that have been developed to pursue neutron star binary merger events. Detailed investigations of the EM data and results of the EM follow-up campaign are being disseminated in papers by the individual teams.
On September 14, 2015, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detected a gravitational-wave transient (GW150914); we characterize the properties of the source and its parameters. The data around the time of the event were analyzed coherently across the LIGO network using a suite of accurate waveform models that describe gravitational waves from a compact binary system in general relativity. GW150914 was produced by a nearly equal mass binary black hole of 36−4+5M⊙ and 29−4+4M⊙; for each parameter we report the median value and the range of the 90% credible interval. The dimensionless spin magnitude of the more massive black hole is bound to be <0.7 (at 90% probability). The luminosity distance to the source is 410−180+160 Mpc, corresponding to a redshift 0.09−0.04+0.03 assuming standard cosmology. The source location is constrained to an annulus section of 610 deg2, primarily in the southern hemisphere. The binary merges into a black hole of 62−4+4M⊙ and spin 0.67−0.07+0.05. This black hole is significantly more massive than any other inferred from electromagnetic observations in the stellar-mass regime.
We present an archival search for transient gravitational-wave bursts in coincidence with 27 single pulse triggers from Green Bank Telescope pulsar surveys, using the LIGO, Virgo and GEO interferometer network. We also discuss a check for gravitational-wave signals in coincidence with Parkes Fast Radio Bursts using similar methods. Data analyzed in these searches were collected between 2007 and 2013. Possible sources of emission of both short-duration radio signals and transient gravitational-wave emission include starquakes on neutron stars, binary coalescence of neutron stars, and cosmic string cusps. While no evidence for gravitational-wave emission in coincidence with these radio transients was found, the current analysis serves as a prototype for similar future searches using more sensitive second-generation interferometers.
This Supplement provides supporting material for arXiv:1602.08492 . We briefly summarize past electromagnetic (EM) follow-up efforts as well as the organization and policy of the current EM follow-up program. We compare the four probability sky maps produced for the gravitational-wave transient GW150914, and provide additional details of the EM follow-up observations that were performed in the different bands.
Supplemental information for a Letter reporting the rate of binary black hole (BBH) coalescences inferred from 16 days of coincident Advanced LIGO observations surrounding the transient gravitational wave signal GW150914. In that work we reported various rate estimates whose 90\% credible intervals fell in the range 2--600Gpc−3yr−1. Here we give details of our method and computations, including information about our search pipelines, a derivation of our likelihood function for the analysis, a description of the astrophysical search trigger distribution expected from merging BBHs, details on our computational methods, a description of the effects and our model for calibration uncertainty, and an analytic method of estimating our detector sensitivity that is calibrated to our measurements.
A transient gravitational-wave signal, GW150914, was identified in the twin Advanced LIGO detectors on September 14, 2015 at 09:50:45 UTC. To assess the implications of this discovery, the detectors remained in operation with unchanged configurations over a period of 39 d around the time of the signal. At the detection statistic threshold corresponding to that observed for GW150914, our search of the 16 days of simultaneous two-detector observational data is estimated to have a false alarm rate (FAR) of <4.9×10−6yr−1, yielding a p-value for GW150914 of <2×10−7. Parameter estimation followup on this trigger identifies its source as a binary black hole (BBH) merger with component masses (m1,m2)=(36−4+5,29−4+4)M⊙ at redshift z=0.09−0.04+0.03 (median and 90\% credible range). Here we report on the constraints these observations place on the rate of BBH coalescences. Considering only GW150914, assuming that all BBHs in the Universe have the same masses and spins as this event, imposing a search FAR threshold of 1 per 100 years, and assuming that the BBH merger rate is constant in the comoving frame, we infer a 90% credible range of merger rates between 2--53Gpc−3yr−1 (comoving frame). Incorporating all search triggers that pass a much lower threshold while accounting for the uncertainty in the astrophysical origin of each trigger, we estimate a higher rate, ranging from 13--600Gpc−3yr−1 depending on assumptions about the BBH mass distribution. All together, our various rate estimates fall in the conservative range 2--600Gpc−3yr−1.
We report here the non-detection of gravitational waves from the merger of binary neutron star systems and neutron-star--black-hole systems during the first observing run of Advanced LIGO. In particular we searched for gravitational wave signals from binary neutron star systems with component masses ∈[1,3]M⊙ and component dimensionless spins <0.05. We also searched for neutron-star--black-hole systems with the same neutron star parameters, black hole mass ∈[2,99]M⊙ and no restriction on the black hole spin magnitude. We assess the sensitivity of the two LIGO detectors to these systems, and find that they could have detected the merger of binary neutron star systems with component mass distributions of 1.35±0.13M⊙ at a volume-weighted average distance of ∼ 70Mpc, and for neutron-star--black-hole systems with neutron star masses of 1.4M⊙ and black hole masses of at least 5M⊙, a volume-weighted average distance of at least ∼ 110Mpc. From this we constrain with 90% confidence the merger rate to be less than 12,600 Gpc−3yr−1 for binary-neutron star systems and less than 3,600 Gpc−3yr−1 for neutron-star--black-hole systems. We find that if no detection of neutron-star binary mergers is made in the next two Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observing runs we would place significant constraints on the merger rates. Finally, assuming a rate of 10−7+20Gpc−3yr−1 short gamma ray bursts beamed towards the Earth and assuming that all short gamma-ray bursts have binary-neutron-star (neutron-star--black-hole) progenitors we can use our 90% confidence rate upper limits to constrain the beaming angle of the gamma-ray burst to be greater than 2.3−1.1+1.7∘ (4.3−1.9+3.1∘).
We report results of a wideband search for periodic gravitational waves from isolated neutron stars within the Orion spur towards both the inner and outer regions of our Galaxy. As gravitational waves interact very weakly with matter, the search is unimpeded by dust and concentrations of stars. One search disk (A) is 6.87∘ in diameter and centered on 20h10m54.71s+33∘33′25.29", and the other (B) is 7.45∘ in diameter and centered on 8h35m20.61s−46∘49′25.151". We explored the frequency range of 50-1500 Hz and frequency derivative from 0 to −5×10−9 Hz/s. A multi-stage, loosely coherent search program allowed probing more deeply than before in these two regions, while increasing coherence length with every stage. Rigorous followup parameters have winnowed initial coincidence set to only 70 candidates, to be examined manually. None of those 70 candidates proved to be consistent with an isolated gravitational wave emitter, and 95% confidence level upper limits were placed on continuous-wave strain amplitudes. Near 169 Hz we achieve our lowest 95% CL upper limit on worst-case linearly polarized strain amplitude h0 of 6.3×10−25, while at the high end of our frequency range we achieve a worst-case upper limit of 3.4×10−24 for all polarizations and sky locations.
The concept of h-vector was introduced by H. Izumi in 1980. Recently we have obtained the Cartan connection for the Finsler space whose metric is given by Kropina change with an h-vector. In 1985, M. Matsumoto studied the theory of Finsler hypersurface. In this paper, we derive certain geometrical properties of a Finslerian hypersurface subjected to a Kropina change with an h-vector
We report measurement of temperature dependence of phonon spectra in quasi one-dimensional metal cyanides MCN (M=Cu, Ag and Au). Ab initio lattice dynamics calculations have been performed to interpret the phonon-spectra as well as to understand the anamolous thermal expansion behavior in these compounds. We bring out the differences in the phonon mode behavior to explain the differences in the thermal expansion behavior among the three compounds. The chain-sliding modes are found to contribute maximum to the negative thermal expansion along c axis in the Cu and Ag compounds, while the same modes contribute to positive thermal expansion in the Au compound. Several low energy transverse modes lead to positive thermal expansion along a and b axis in all the compounds. The calculated elastic constants and Born effective charges are correlated with the difference in nature of bonding among these metal cyanides.
We present detailed ab-initio lattice dynamical analysis of the Fe-O infinite-layer compounds CaFeO2 and SrFeO2 in various magnetic configurations. These indicate strong spin-phonon coupling in SrFeO2 in contrast to that in case of CaFeO2. Powder neutron inelastic scattering experiments on SrFeO2 have also been performed at temperatures from 5 K to 353 K in the antiferromagnetic phase and analyzed using the ab-initio calculations. These suggest distortion of the ideal infinite planer structure above 300 K. From our ab-initio calculations in SrFeO2 as a function of volume, we suggest that the distortion in SrFeO2 above 300 K is similar to that known in CaFeO2 at ambient conditions. The distortion of the planer structure of CaFeO2 involves doubling of the planer unit cell that may be usually expected to be due to a soft phonon mode at the M-point (1/2 1/2 0). However, our ab-initio calculations show quite unusually that all the M-point (1/2 1/2 0) phonons are stable, but two stable M3+ and M2-modes anharmonically couple with an unstable Bu mode at the zone centre and lead to the cell doubling and the distorted structure. Magnetic exchange interactions in both the compounds have been computed on the basis of the ideal planar structure (P4/mmm space group) and with increasing amplitude of the Bu phonon mode. These reveal that the magnetic exchange interactions reduce significantly with increasing distortion. We have extended the ab-initio phonon calculation to high pressures, which reveal that, above 20 GPa of pressure, the undistorted planer CaFeO2 becomes dynamically stable. We also report computed phonon spectra in SrFeO3 that has a cubic structure, which is useful to understand the role of the difference in geometry of oxygen atoms around the Fe atom with respect to planer SrFeO2.
We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements over 7-1251 K in CaMnO3 covering various phase transitions, and over 6-150 K in PrMnO3 covering the magnetic transition. The excitations around 20 meV in CaMnO3 and at 17 meV in PrMnO3 are found to be associated with magnetic origin. In spite of similarity of the structure of the two compounds, the neutron inelastic spectrum of PrMnO3 exhibits broad features at 150 K unlike well-defined peaks in the spectrum of CaMnO3. This might result from the difference in nature of interactions in the two compounds (magnetic and Jahn-Teller distortion). The interpretation and analysis of the observed phonon spectra have been performed using ab-initio phonon calculations. We also discuss the effect of pressure on the structural distortions in the orthorhombic phase of CaMnO3 and PrMnO3. On application of pressure, we found that the variations of Mn-O distances are isotropic for CaMnO3 and highly anisotropic for PrMnO3. The calculated structure as a function of pressure in PrMnO3 shows that suppression of Jahn-Teller distortion and insulator to metal transition occurs simultaneously. Our calculations show that this transition may not be associated with the occurrence of the tetragonal phase above 20 GPa as reported in the literature, since the tetragonal phase is found to be dynamically unstable although it is found to be energetically favored over the orthorhombic phase above 20 GPa. CaMnO3 does not show any phase transition up to 60 GPa.
In this paper, we discuss the Finsler spaces (Mn,L) and (Mn,∗L), where ∗L(x,y) is obtained from L(x,y) by Kropina change ∗L(x,y)=bi(x,y)yiL2(x,y) and bi(x,y) is an h-vector in (Mn,L). We find the necessary and sufficient condition when the Cartan connection coefficients for both spaces (Mn,L) and (Mn,∗L) are the same. We also find the necessary and sufficient condition for Kropina change with an h-vector to be projective.
Lattice dynamics and high pressure phase transitions in AWO4 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca and Pb) have been investigated using inelastic neutron scattering experiments, ab-initio density functional theory calculations and extensive molecular dynamics simulations. The vibrational modes that are internal to WO4 tetrahedra occur at the highest energies consistent with the relative stability of WO4 tetrahedra. The neutron data and the ab-initio calculations are found to be in excellent agreement. The neutron and structural data are used to develop and validate an interatomic potential model. The model is used for classical molecular dynamics simulations to study their response to high pressure. We have calculated the enthalpies of the scheelite and fergusonite phases as a function of pressure, which confirms that the scheelite to fergusonite transition is second order in nature. With increase in pressure, there is a gradual change in the AO8 polyhedra, while there is no apparent change in the WO4 tetrahedra. We found that that all the four tungstates amorphize at high pressure. This is in good agreement with available experimental observations which show amorphization at around 45 GPa in BaWO4 and 40 GPa in CaWO4. On amorphization, there is an abrupt increase in the coordination of the W atom while the bisdisphenoids around A atom are considerably distorted. The pair correlation functions of the various atom pairs corroborate these observations. Our observations aid in predicting the pressure of amorphization in SrWO4 and PbWO4, which have not been experimentally reported.
The present paper deals with the Killing correspondence between some Finsler spaces. We consider a Finsler space equipped with a β-change of metric and study the Killing correspondence between the original Finsler space and the Finsler space equipped with β-change of metric. We obtain necessary and sufficient condition for a vector field Killing in the original Finsler space to be Killing in the Finsler space equipped with β-change of metric. Certain consequences of such result are also discussed.
We have carried out an extensive phonon study on multiferroic GaFeO3 to elucidate its dynamical behavior. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are performed over a wide temperature range, 150 to 1198 K. First principles lattice dynamical calculations are done for the sake of the analysis and interpretation of the observations. The comparison of the phonon spectra from magnetic and non-magnetic calculations highlights pronounced differences. The energy range of the vibrational atomistic contributions of the Fe and O ions are found to differ significantly in the two calculation types. Therefore, magnetism induced by the active spin degrees of freedom of Fe cations plays a key role in stabilizing the structure and dynamics of GaFeO3. Moreover, the computed enthalpy in various phases of GaFeO3 is used to gain deeper insights into the high pressure phase stability of this material. Further, the volume dependence of the phonon spectra is used to determine its thermal expansion behavior.
We report ab-inito density functional theory calculation of phonons in cubic phase of ZrW2O8 in the entire Brillouin zone and identify specific anharmonic phonons that are responsible for large negative thermal expansion (NTE) in terms of translation, rotation and distortion of WO4 and ZrO6. We have used density functional calculations to interpret the experimental phonon spectra as a function of pressure and temperature as reported in literature. We discover that the phonons showing anharmonicty with temperature are different from those showing anharmonicity with pressure although both are of similar frequencies. Only the latter phonons are associated with NTE. Therefore the cubic and/or quadratic anharmonicity of phonons is not relevant to NTE but just the volume dependence of frequencies. The calculations are able to reproduce the observed anomalous trends, namely, the softening of the low frequency peak at about 5 meV in the phonon spectra with pressure and its hardening with temperature, while both the changes involve a compression of the lattice.
Sodium niobate (NaNbO3) exhibits most complex sequence of structural phase transitions in perovskite family and therefore provides as excellent model system for understanding the mechanism of structural phase transitions. We report temperature dependence of inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonon densities of states in sodium niobate. The measurements are carried out in various crystallographic phases of this material at various temperatures from 300 K to 1048 K. The phonon spectra exhibit peaks centered around 19, 37, 51, 70 and 105 meV. Interestingly, the peak around 70 meV shifts significantly towards lower energy with increasing temperature, while the other peaks do not exhibit an appreciable change. The phonon spectra at 783 K show prominent change and become more diffusive as compared to those at 303 K. In order to better analyze these features, we have performed first principles lattice dynamics calculations based on the density functional theory. The computed phonon density of states is found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. Based on our calculation we are able to assign the characteristic Raman modes in the antiferroelectric phase to the A1g symmetry, which are due to the folding of the T (w=95 cm-1) and delta(w=129 cm-1) points of the cubic Brillouin zone.
Lithium transition metal phospho-olivines are useful electrode materials, owing to their stability, high safety, low cost and cyclability. We report phonon studies using neutron inelastic scattering experiments, ab-initio density functional theory calculations and potential model calculations on LiMPO4 (M=Mn, Fe) at ambient and high temperature to understand the microscopic picture of Li sub-lattice. The experiments are in good agreement with calculations. The lattice dynamics calculations indicate instability of a zone-centre as well as zone-boundary modes along (100) at volume corresponding to high temperature. The unstable phonon modes show mainly large vibration of Li atoms in the x-z plane of the orthorhombic structure (space group Pbnm). Molecular dynamics simulations with increasing temperature indicate large mean square displacement of Li as compared to other constituent atoms. The computed pair-correlations between various atom pairs show that there is local disorder occurring in the lithium sub-lattice with increasing temperature, while other pairs show minimal changes. The results find the two compounds to be thermally stable up to high temperatures, which is a desirable trait for its battery applications.
We report a comparative study of the dynamics of Cu2O, Ag2O and Au2O (i.e. M2O with M = Au, Ag and Cu) using first principle calculations based on the density functional theory. Here for the first time we show that the nature of chemical bonding and open space in the unit cell are directly related to the magnitude of thermal expansion coefficient. A good match between the calculated phonon density of states and that derived from inelastic neutron scattering measurements is obtained for Cu2O and Ag2O. The calculated thermal expansions of Ag2O and Cu2O are negative, in agreement with available experimental data, while it is found to be positive for Au2O. We identify the low energy phonon modes responsible for this anomalous thermal expansion. We further calculate the charge density in the three compounds and find that the magnitude of the ionic character of the Ag2O, Cu2O, and Au2O crystals is in decreasing order, with an Au-O bond of covalent nature strongly rigidifying the Au4O tetrahedral units. The nature of the chemical bonding is also found to be an important ingredient to understand the large shift of the phonon frequencies of these solids with pressure and temperature. In particular, the quartic component of the anharmonic term in the crystal potential is able to account for the temperature dependence of the phonon modes.
We report measurements of the temperature dependence of phonon densities of states in K0.8Fe1.6Se2 using inelastic neutron scattering technique. While cooling down to 150 K, a phonon peak splitting around 25 meV is observed and a new peak appears at 31 meV. The measurements support the recent Raman and infra-red measurements indicating a lowering of symmetry of K0.8Fe1.6Se2 upon cooling below 250 K. Ab-initio phonon calculations have been carried out for K0.8Fe1.6Se2 and KFe2Se2. The comparison of the phonon spectra as obtained from the magnetic as well as non magnetic calculations show pronounced differences. We show that in the two calculations the energy range of the vibrational contribution from both Fe and Se are quite different. We conclude that Fe magnetism is correlated to the phonon dynamics and it plays an important role in stabilizing the structure of K0.8Fe1.6Se2 as well as that of KFe2Se2. The calculations highlight the presence of low energy librational modes in K0.8Fe1.6Se2 as compared to KFe2Se2.
We report direct experimental evidence of antiferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition under pressure in NaNbO3 using neutron diffraction at room temperature. The paraelectric phase is found to stabilize above 8 GPa and its crystal structure has been determined in orthorhombic symmetry with space group Pbnm. The variation of the structural parameters of the both orthorhombic phases as a function of pressure was determined. We have not found evidence for structural phase transition around 2 GPa as previously suggested in the literature based on Raman scattering experiments, however, significant change in Nb-O-Nb bond angles are found around this pressure. The response of the lattice parameters to pressure is strongly anisotropic with a largest contraction along <100>. The structural phase transition around ~ 8 GPa is followed by an anomalous increase in the orthorhombic strain and tilt angle associated with the R point (q= 1/2 1/2 1/2). Ab-initio calculation of the enthalpy in the various phases of NaNbO3 is able to predict the phase transition pressure well.
We report studies on the vibrational and elastic behavior of lithium oxide, Li2O around its superionic transition temperature. Phonon frequencies calculated using the ab-initio and empirical potential model are in excellent agreement with the reported experimental data. Further, volume dependence of phonon dispersion relation has been calculated, which indicates softening of zone boundary transverse acoustic phonon mode along [110] at volume corresponding to the superionic transition in Li2O. The instability of phonon mode could be a precursor leading to the dynamical disorder of the lithium sub lattice. Empirical potential model calculations have been carried out to deduce the probable direction of lithium diffusion by constructing a super cell consisting of 12000 atoms. The barrier energy for lithium ion diffusion from one lattice site to another at ambient and elevated temperature has been computed. Barrier energy considerations along various symmetry directions indicate that [001] is the most favourable direction for lithium diffusion in the fast ion phase. This result corroborates our observation of dynamical instability in the transverse mode along (110) wave vector. Using molecular dynamics simulations we have studied the temperature variation of elastic constants, which are important to the high-temperature stability of lithium oxide.
