Combined effects of Sr substitution and pressure on the ground states in CaFe2_2As2_2

We present a detailed study of the combined effects of Sr substitution and hydrostatic pressure on the ground-state properties of CaFe2_2As2_2. Measurements of the electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility, both at ambient and finite pressure PP ≤\leq 2 \,GPa, were performed on Ca1−x_{1-x}Srx_xFe2_2As2_2 single crystals grown out of Sn flux. We find that upon Sr substitution the ranges of stability of both the structural-magnetic transition and the transition into the non-magnetic collapsed tetragonal phase are shifted to higher pressure levels with the latter moving at a higher rate. This suggests the possibility of separating the two phase lines, which intersect already at elevated temperatures for xx = 0 and low Sr concentration levels. For xx = 0.177 we find strong evidence that both phases remain separated down to lowest temperature and that a zero-resistance state emerges in this intermediate pressure window. This observation indicates that Sr-substitution combined with hydrostatic pressure provides another route for stabilizing superconductivity in CaFe2_2As2_2. Our results are consistent with the notion that (i) preserving the fluctuations associated with the structural-magnetic transition to low temperatures is vital for superconductivity to form in this material and that (ii) the non-magnetic collapsed tetragonal phase is detrimental for superconductivity.

Resistivity and magnetoresistance of FeSe single crystals under Helium-gas pressure

We present temperature-dependent in-plane resistivity measurements on FeSe single crystals under He-gas pressure up to 800 MPa and magnetic fields B≤B \leq 10 T. A sharp phase transition anomaly is revealed at the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition at TsT_s slightly below 90 K. TsT_s becomes reduced with increasing pressure in a linear fashion at a rate dTsT_{s}/dPP ≃\simeq -31 K/GPa. This is accompanied by a PP-linear increase of the superconducting transition temperature at Tc∼T_c \sim 8.6 K with dTcT_{c}/dPP ≃\simeq +5.8 K/GPa. Pressure studies of the normal-state resistivity highlight two distinctly different regimes: for T>TsT > T_s, i.e., in the tetragonal phase, the in-plane resistivity changes strongly with pressure. This contrasts with the state deep in the orthorhombic phase at T≪TsT \ll T_s, preceding the superconducting transition. Here a TT-linear resistivity is observed the slope of which does not change with pressure. Resistivity studies in varying magnetic fields both at ambient and finite pressure reveal clear changes of the magnetoresistance, Δρ∝B2Δρ\propto B^{2}, upon cooling through TsT_s. Our data are consistent with a reconstruction of the Fermi surface accompanying the structural transition.

Superconducting properties of K1−x_{1-x}Nax_xFe2_2As2_2 under pressure

The effect of hydrostatic pressure and partial Na substitution on the normal-state properties and the superconducting transition temperature (TcT_c) of K1−x_{1-x}Nax_xFe2_2As2_2 single crystals were investigated. It was found that a partial Na substitution leads to a deviation from the standard T2T^2 Fermi-liquid behavior in the temperature dependence of the normal-state resistivity. It was demonstrated that non-Fermi liquid like behavior of the resistivity for K1−x_{1-x}Nax_{x}Fe2_2As2_2 and some KFe2_2As2_2 samples can be explained by disorder effect in the multiband system with rather different quasiparticle effective masses. Concerning the superconducting state our data support the presence of a shallow minimum around 2 GPa in the pressure dependence of TcT_c for stoichiometric KFe2_2As2_2. The analysis of TcT_c in the K1−x_{1-x}Nax_{x}Fe2_2As2_2 at pressures below 1.5 GPa showed, that the reduction of TcT_c with Na substitution follows the Abrikosov-Gor'kov law with the critical temperature Tc0T_{c0} of the clean system (without pair-breaking) which linearly depends on the pressure. Our observations, also, suggest that TcT_c of K1−x_{1-x}Nax_xFe2_2As2_2 is nearly independent of the lattice compression produced by the Na substitution. Further, we theoretically analyzed the behavior of the band structure under pressure within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). A qualitative agreement between the calculated and the recently in de Haas-van Alphen experiments [T. Terashima et al., Phys.Rev.B89, 134520(2014)] measured pressure dependencies of the Fermi-surface cross-sections has been found. These calculations, also, indicate that the observed minimum around 2~GPa in the pressure dependence of TcT_c may occur without a change of the pairing symmetry.

Hydrostatic-pressure tuning of magnetic, nonmagnetic and superconducting states in annealed Ca(Fe1−x_{1-x}Cox_x)2_2As2_2

We report on measurements of the magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistance under He-gas pressure on single crystals of Ca(Fe1−x_{1-x}Cox_{x})2_{2}As2_{2}. We find that for properly heat-treated crystals with modest Co-concentration, xx = 0.028, the salient ground states associated with iron-arsenide superconductors, i.e., orthorhombic/antiferromagnetic (o/afm), superconducting, and nonmagnetic collapsed-tetragonal (cT) states can be accessed all in one sample with reasonably small and truly hydrostatic pressure. This is possible owing to the extreme sensitivity of the o/afm (for T≤T \leq Ts,NT_{s,N}) and superconducting (T≤TcT \leq T_c) states against variation of pressure, disclosing pressure coefficients of dTs,NT_{s,N}/dPP = -(1100 ±\pm 50) K/GPa and dTcT_{c}/dPP = -(60 ±\pm 3) K/GPa, respectively. Systematic investigations of the various phase transitions and ground states via pressure tuning revealed no coexistence of bulk superconductivity (sc) with the o/afm state which we link to the strongly first-order character of the corresponding structural/magnetic transition in this compound. Our results, together with literature results, indicate that preserving fluctuations associated with the o/afm transition to low enough temperatures is vital for sc to form.
