Revisiting the Israel junction conditions in Einstein-Cartan gravity

The Israel junction conditions of a thin shell in the context of Einstein-Cartan gravity are revisited. It is shown that with a choice of the torsion discontinuity taken to be orthogonal to the hypersurface and consistent with the antisymmetric properties of torsion tensor and contorsion tensor, the generalized asymmetric surface energy-momentum tensor turns out to be tangent to the hypersurface while the resulting generalized Israel junction conditions are modified. The main differences to previous works are mentioned.

On the stress-energy tensor of a null shell in Einstein-Cartan gravity

The stress-energy tensor of a matter shell whose history coincides with a null hypersurface in the Einstein-Cartan gravity is revisited. It is demonstrated that with a proper choice for the torsion discontinuity taken to be orthogonal to the null hypersurface and consistent with the antisymmetric property of torsion tensor, the modified expression for the asymmetric stress-energy tensor is automatically tangent to the hypersurface. The main differences with respect to a previous work are addressed

A note on Pathria's model of the universe as a black hole

Pathria has shown that for the certain values of the cosmological constant, a pressureless closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe can be the interior of a Schwarzschild black hole. We examine the Pathria's model from the point of view of the matching of the two different spacetimes through a null hypersurface. We first regard the event horizon of the black hole, which in the Pathria's model is identified with the radius of the universe at the point of its maximum expansion, as a null hypersurface separating the FRW interior from the vacuum Schwarzschild exterior, and then use the null shell formalism for it. It turns out that the matching is not smooth, and in fact, the null hypersurface is the history of a null shell admitting a surface pressure.

Spherically Symmetric Thick Branes in Vacuum

We consider a spherical thick 3-brane immersed in a five-dimensional bulk spacetime. We demonstrate how the thick brane equation of motion expanded in powers of the thickness of the brane can be obtained from the expected junction conditions on the boundaries of thick brane with the two embedding spacetimes. It is shown that the finite thickness leads to a faster collapse of the spherical shell.
