Calculation of mutual information for nonlinear communication channel at large SNR

Using the path-integral technique we examine the mutual information for the communication channel modelled by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with additive Gaussian noise. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation is one of the fundamental models in nonlinear physics, and it has a broad range of applications, including fiber optical communications --- the backbone of the Internet. At large signal-to-noise ratio ($\mathrm{SNR}$) we present the mutual information through the path-integral which is convenient for the perturbative expansion in nonlinearity. In the limit of small noise and small nonlinearity we derive analytically the first nonzero nonlinear correction to the mutual information for the channel.

Mutual information in nonlinear communication channel. Preliminary analytical results in large SNR and small nonlinearity limit

Applying perturbation theory to the path-integral representation for the mutual information of the nonlinear communication channel described by the nonlinear Shrödinger equation (NLSE) with the additive Gaussian noise we analyze the analytical expression for the mutual information at large signal-to-noise ratio ($\mathrm{SNR}$) and small nonlinearity. We classify all possible corrections to the mutual information in nonlinearity parameter and demonstrate that all singular in $\mathrm{SNR}$ terms vanish in the final result. Furthermore our analytical result demonstrates that the corrections to Shannon's contribution to the mutual information in the leading order in $\mathrm{SNR}$ are of order of squared nonlinearity parameter. We outline the way for the calculation of these corrections in the further investigations.

Optimal input signal distribution and per-sample mutual information for nondispersive nonlinear optical fiber channel at large SNR

We consider a model nondispersive nonlinear optical fiber channel with additive white Gaussian noise at large $\mathrm{SNR}$ (signal-to-noise ratio) in the intermediate power region. Using Feynman path-integral technique we for the first time find the optimal input signal distribution maximizing the channel's per-sample mutual information. The finding of the optimal input signal distribution allows us to improve previously known estimates for the channel capacity. The output signal entropy, conditional entropy, and per-sample mutual information are calculated for Gaussian, half-Gaussian and modified Gaussian input signal distributions. We explicitly show that in the intermediate power regime the per-sample mutual information for the optimal input signal distribution is greater than the per-sample mutual information for the Gaussian and half-Gaussian input signal distributions.

Pattern generation by dissipative parametric instability

Nonlinear instabilities are responsible for spontaneous pattern formation in a vast number of natural and engineered systems ranging from biology to galaxies build-up. We propose a new instability mechanism leading to pattern formation in spatially extended nonlinear systems based on a periodic antiphase modulation of spectrally-dependent losses arranged in a zig-zag way: an effective filtering is imposed at symmetrically located wavenumbers k and -k in alternating order. The properties of the dissipative parametric instability differ from the features of the both key classical concepts of modulation instabilities: the Benjamin-Feir, and the Faraday instability. We demonstrate how dissipative parametric instability can lead to the formation of stable patterns in one and two-dimensional systems. The proposed instability mechanism is generic and can naturally occur or can be implemented in various physical systems.

Conditional probability calculations for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with additive noise

The method for computation of conditional probability density function for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with additive noise is developed. We present in a constructive form the conditional probability density function in the limit of a small noise and analytically derive it in a weakly nonlinear case. The general theory results are illustrated using fibre-optic communications as a particular, albeit practically very important, example.

The laminar-turbulent transition in a fibre laser

Studying transition to a highly disordered state of turbulence from a linearly stable coherent laminar state is conceptually and technically challenging and immensely important, e.g. all pipe and channel flows are of that type. In optics, understanding how systems lose coherence with increase of spatial size or excitation level is an open fundamental problem of practical importance. Here we identify, arguably, the simplest system where this classical problem can be studied: we learnt to operate a fibre laser in laminar and turbulent regimes. We show that laminar phase is an analogue of a one-dimensional coherent condensate and turbulence onset is through a spatial loss of coherence. We discover a new mechanism of laminar-turbulent transition in laser operation: condensate destruction by the clustering of dark and grey solitons. This is important both for the design of devices exploiting coherent dynamics and for conceptually new technologies based on systems operating far from thermodynamic equilibrium.

Shannon capacity of nonlinear regenerative channels

We compute Shannon capacity of nonlinear channels with regenerative elements. Conditions are found under which capacity of such nonlinear channels is higher than the Shannon capacity of the classical linear additive white Gaussian noise channel. We develop a general scheme for designing the proposed channels and apply it to the particular nonlinear sine-mapping. The upper bound for regeneration efficiency is found and the asymptotic behavior of the capacity in the saturation regime is derived.
