Initial state QED radiation aspects for future $e^+e^-$ colliders

This white paper concerns theoretical and phenomenological aspects relevant to the physics of future $e^+e^-$ colliders, in particular regarding initial-state QED radiation. The contributions each contain key technical aspects, and are formulated in a pedagogical manner so as to render them accessible also to those who are not directly working on these and immediately-related topics. This should help both experts and non-experts understand the theoretical challenges that we shall face at future $e^+e^-$ colliders. Specifically, this paper contains descriptions of the treatment of initial state radiation from several Monte Carlo collaborations, as well as contributions that explain a number of more theoretical developments with promise of future phenomenological impact.

New Developments in KKMChh: Quark-Level Exponentiated Radiative Corrections and Semi-analytical Results

We describe a new semi-analytical program, KKhhFoam, which provides a simplified framework for testing the amplitude-level exponentiation scheme (CEEX) of the full KKMChh program in the semi-soft limit. The structure of the KKhhFoam integrand is also helpful for elucidating the structure of CEEX. We also discuss the representation of ISR in KKMChh and compare the ISR added by KKMChh to the effect of switching to a QED-corrected PDF, at the individual quark level, and suggest a new approach to running KKMChh with QED-corrected PDFs.

ISR and IFI in Precision AFB Studies with KKMC-hh

KKMC-hh is a hadronic event generator for Z boson production and decays, which includes exponentiated multi-photon radiation and first-order electroweak corrections. We have used KKMC-hh to investigate the role of initial sate radiation (ISR) and initial-final interference (IFI) in precision electroweak analyses at the LHC. We compare the effect of this radiation on angular distributions and forward-backward asymmetry, which are particularly important for the measurement of the weak mixing angle. We discuss the relation of the ISR implementation in KKMC-hh to ISR from parton distribution functions with QED corrections.

On the universality of the KRK factorization scheme

The factorisation scheme (FS) abbreviated as KRK FS including a new definition of the PDFs for initial hadrons was formulated while developing KrkNLO scheme of matching QCD NLO corrections for the hard process with the parton shower heavy boson production in hadron-hadron collision and for deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering. KRK FS (originally called Monte Carlo FS) can be regarded as a variant of the $\overline{MS}$ system. It is therefore trivially universal, that is process independent. The question of its universality is formulated differently: As the basic role of KRK FS is to simplify drastically NLO corrections, the question is now whether the same {\em single} variant of PDFs in the KRK FS is able to achieve the same maximal simplification of the NLO corrections for {\em all processes} with one or two initial hadrons and any number of the final hadrons? Our answer is positive and the proof is elaborated in the present note within the Catani-Seymour subtraction methodology. KRK FS is mandatory in the KrkNLO method of matching NLO calculation and parton shower -- a much simpler alternative of POWHEG and/or MC\@ NLO. However, the use of KRK FS and the corresponding PDFs simplifies NLO calculations for any other method of calculating NLO corrections and for arbitrary processes as well.

Overview of the Path to 0.01$\%$ Theoretical Luminosity Precision for the FCCee and Its Possible Synergistic Effects for Other FCC Precision Theory Requirements

To exploit properly the precision physics program at the FCC-ee, the theoretical precision tag on the respective luminosity will need to be improved from the 0.054$\%$ (0.061$\%$) results at LEP to 0.01$\%$, where the former (latter) LEP result has (does not have) the pairs correction. We present an overview of the roads one may take to reach the required 0.01$\%$ precision tag at the FCC-ee and we discuss possible synergistic effects of the walk along these roads for other FCC precision theory requirements.

QED Exponentiation for quasi-stable charged particles: the $e^-e^+\to W^-W^+$ process

All real and virtual infrared singularities in the standard analysis of the perturbative Quantum Electrodynamics (like that of Yennie-Frautschi-Suura) are associated with photon emissions from the external legs in the scattering process. External particles are stable, with the zero decay width. Such singularities are well understood at any perturbative order and are resummed. The case of production and decay of the semi-stable {\em neutral} particles like $Z$ boson or $τ$ lepton, with the narrow decay width, $Γ/M \ll 1$, is also well understood at any perturbative order and soft photon resummation can be done. For the absent or loose upper cut-off on the total photon energy $ω$ the production and decay process of the semi-stable (neutral) particles decouples approximately and can be considered quasi-independently. In particular soft photon resummation can be done separately for the production and decay process treating semi-stable (neutral) particle as stable. So far, consistent treatment of the soft photon resummation for semi-stable {\em charged} particles like $W^\pm$ boson is not available in the literature and the aim of this work is to present a solution for this problem. Generally, it should be feasible because the underlying physics is the same as in the case of the neutral semi-stable resonances -- in the limit $Γ/M \ll 1$ production and decay processes for charged particles also necessarily decouple due to long lifetime of the particles. The technical problems to be solved in this work are related to the fact that semi-stable charged particle are able to emit photons.

The Monte Carlo Program KKMC for the Lepton or Quark Pair Production at LEP/SLC Energies -- updates of electroweak calculations

Since the {\tt KKMC} program was published for the first time over 20 years ago, it has gained popularity and was exploited in a broad spectrum of applications. The core part of the program itself did not change much. In contrast, some of the libraries have evolved substantially. The aim of this publication is to archive four versions, alternative to the one published 20 years ago versions of the electroweak libraries (or just parameter initialization versions), which were instrumental for the precision Standard Model calculation from the end of LEP era till now and for the sake of the future applications/comparisons for the future electron-positron colliders, in particular for the FCC-ee related studies. These electroweak libraries are useful for the hadron collider applications as well, for instance for {\tt KKMC-hh} or {\tt TauSpinner} projects.

Theory for the FCC-ee : Report on the 11th FCC-ee Workshop

The Future Circular Collider (FCC) at CERN, a proposed 100-km circular facility with several colliders in succession, culminates with a 100 TeV proton-proton collider. It offers a vast new domain of exploration in particle physics, with orders of magnitude advances in terms of Precision, Sensitivity and Energy. The implementation plan foresees, as a first step, an Electroweak Factory electron-positron collider. This high luminosity facility, operating between 90 and 365 GeV centre-of-mass energy, will study the heavy particles of the Standard Model, Z, W, Higgs, and top with unprecedented accuracy. The Electroweak Factory $e^+e^-$ collider constitutes a real challenge to the theory and to precision calculations, triggering the need for the development of new mathematical methods and software tools. A first workshop in 2018 had focused on the first FCC-ee stage, the Tera-Z, and confronted the theoretical status of precision Standard Model calculations on the Z-boson resonance to the experimental demands. The second workshop in January 2019, which is reported here, extended the scope to the next stages, with the production of W-bosons (FCC-ee-W), the Higgs boson (FCC-ee-H) and top quarks (FCC-ee-tt). In particular, the theoretical precision in the determination of the crucial input parameters, alpha_QED, alpha_QCD, M_W, m_t at the level of FCC-ee requirements is thoroughly discussed. The requirements on Standard Model theory calculations were spelled out, so as to meet the demanding accuracy of the FCC-ee experimental potential. The discussion of innovative methods and tools for multi-loop calculations was deepened. Furthermore, phenomenological analyses beyond the Standard Model were discussed, in particular the effective theory approaches. The reports of 2018 and 2019 serve as white papers of the workshop results and subsequent developments.

${\cal{KK}}\text{MC-hh}$: Resummed Exact ${\cal O}(α^2L)$ EW Corrections in a Hadronic MC Event Generator

We present an improvement of the MC event generator Herwiri2, where we recall the latter MC was a prototype for the inclusion of CEEX resummed EW corrections in hadron-hadron scattering at high cms energies. In this improvement the new exact ${\cal O}(α^2L)$ resummed EW generator ${\cal{KK}}$ MC 4.22, featuring as it does the CEEX realization of resummation in the EW sector, is put in union with the Herwig parton shower environment. The {\rm LHE} format of the attendant output event file means that all other conventional parton shower environments are available to the would-be user of the resulting new MC. For this reason (and others -- see the text) we henceforth refer to the new improvement of the Herwiri2 MC as ${\cal{KK}}\text{MC-hh}$. Since this new MC features exact ${\cal O}(α)$ pure weak corrections from the DIZET EW library and features the CEEX and the EEX YFS-style resummation of large multiple photon effects, it provides already the concrete path to 0.05\% precision on such effects if we focus on the EW effects themselves. We therefore show predictions for observable distributions and comparisons with other approaches in the literature. This MC represents an important step in the realization of the exact amplitude-based $QED\otimes QCD$ resummation paradigm. Independently of this latter observation, the MC rigorously quantifies important EW effects in the current LHC experiments.

New simpler method of matching NLO corrections with parton shower Monte Carlo

Next steps in development of the KrkNLO method of implementing NLO QCD corrections to hard processes in parton shower Monte Carlo programs are presented. This new method is a simpler alternative to other well-known approaches, such as MC@NLO and POWHEG. The KrkNLO method owns its simplicity to the use of parton distribution functions (PDFs) in a new, so-called Monte Carlo (MC), factorization scheme which was recently fully defined for the first time. Preliminary numerical results for the Higgs-boson production process are also presented.

On the dependence of QCD splitting functions on the choice of the evolution variable

We show that already at the NLO level the DGLAP evolution kernel Pqq starts to depend on the choice of the evolution variable. We give an explicit example of such a variable, namely the maximum of transverse momenta of emitted partons and we identify a class of evolution variables that leave the NLO Pqq kernel unchanged with respect to the known standard MS-bar results. The kernels are calculated using a modified Curci-Furmanski-Petronzio method which is based on a direct Feynman-graphs calculation.

Parton distribution functions in Monte Carlo factorisation scheme

A next step in development of the KrkNLO method of including complete NLO QCD corrections to hard processes in a LO parton-shower Monte Carlo (PSMC) is presented. It consists of generalisation of the method, previously used for the Drell-Yan process, to Higgs-boson production. This extension is accompanied with the complete description of parton distribution functions (PDFs) in a dedicated, Monte Carlo (MC) factorisation scheme, applicable to any process of production of one or more colour-neutral particles in hadron-hadron collisions.

Lineshape of the Higgs boson in future lepton colliders

The effect of the photon emission (bremsstrahlung) in the cross section of the process of direct production of the Higgs boson in the future high luminosity electron and muon colliders is calculated. It was found that cross section at the top of the Higgs boson resonance peak is reduced by factor 0.347 for the electron collider and 0.548 for the muon collider. Machine spread of the centre of the mass energy of 4.2MeV (equal to the Higgs width) would reduce peak cross section further, by factor 0.170 and 0.256 (QED and energy spread) for electron and muon beams respectively. Possible uncertainties in the resummed QED calculations are discussed. Numerical results for the lineshape cross section including QED and many values of the machine energy spread are provided.

Matching NLO QCD with parton shower in Monte Carlo scheme - the KrkNLO method

A new method of including the complete NLO QCD corrections to hard processes in the LO parton-shower Monte Carlo (PSMC) is presented. This method, called KrkNLO, requires the use of parton distribution functions in a dedicated Monte Carlo factorization scheme, which is also discussed in this paper. In the future, it may simplify introduction of the NNLO corrections to hard processes and the NLO corrections to PSMC. Details of the method and numerical examples of its practical implementation, as well as comparisons with other calculations, such as MCFM, MC@NLO, POWHEG, for single $Z/γ^*$-boson production at the LHC, are presented.

CEEX EW Corrections for f \bar{f}\rightarrow f'\bar{f'} at LHC, Muon Colliders and FCC-ee as Realized in KK MC 4.22

With an eye toward the precision physics of the LHC, FCC-ee and possible high energy muon colliders, we present the extension of the CEEX (coherent exclusive exponentiation) realization of the YFS approach to resummation in our KK MC to include the processes f\bar{f}\rightarrow f'\bar{f'}, f=μ,τ, q,ν_\ell, f'=e, μ,τ, q, ν_\ell, q=u,d,s,c,b,t, \ell =e,μ,τwith f \ne f'. After giving a brief summary of the CEEX theory with reference to the older EEX (exclusive exponentiation) theory, we illustrate theoretical results relevant to the LHC, FCC-ee, and possible muon collider physics programs.

On regularizing the infrared singularities in QCD NLO splitting functions with the new Principal Value prescription

We propose a modified use of the Principal Value prescription for regularizing the infrared singularities in the light-cone axial gauge by applying it to all singularities in the light-cone plus component of integration momentum. The modification is motivated by and applied to the re-calculation of the QCD NLO splitting functions for the purpose of Monte Carlo implementations. The final results agree with the standard PV prescription whereas contributions from separate graphs get simplified.

preprint2014arXiv

The new PV prescription for IR singularities of NLO splitting functions

In this note we outline the Monte Carlo project {\tt KrkMC}. The goal of this project is to construct a QCD Parton Shower accurate to NLO level in both coefficient function and splitting function (shower) parts. We discuss in detail one of its aspects --- the evolution kernels. The kernels had to be recalculated in a new regularisation scheme, called NPV. In this scheme all the singularities in the plus component of the integration momenta are regularised by means of principal value prescription. This is in contrast to the standard approach, in which only the spurious axial singularities are regularised by principal value. As a result, the triple poles in the dimensional regularisation parameter $ε$ are replaced by a combination of $ε$-poles and logarithms of geometrical cut-off $δ$. The resulting exclusive parton densities are more suitable for stochastic applications in four dimensions. Simultaneously, at the inclusive level, the standard and new prescriptions give the same results provided appropriate real and virtual contributions are added.

A new Monte Carlo study of evolution equation with coherence

We solve CCFM evolution equation numerically using the CohRad program based on Monte Carlo methods. We discuss the effects of removing soft emissions and non-Sudakov form factor by comparing the obtained distributions as functions of accumulated transverse momenta or fractions of proton's longitudinal momenta. We also compare the solution of the CCFM with the DGLAP equation in the gluonic channel. Finally, we analyze the infra-red behaviour of solutions using the so-called diffusion plots.

Drell-Yan processes with WINHAC

We present the Monte Carlo event generator WINHAC for Drell-Yan processes in proton-proton, proton-antiproton, proton-ion and ion-ion collisions. It features multiphoton radiation within the Yennie-Frautschi-Suura exclusive exponentiation scheme with O(alpha) electroweak corrections for the charged-current (W+/W-) processes and multiphoton radiation generated by PHOTOS for neutral-current (Z+gamma) ones. For the initial-state QCD/QED parton shower and hadronisation it is interfaced with PYTHIA. It includes several options, e.g. for the polarized W-boson production, generation of weighted/unweighted events, etc. WINHAC was cross-checked numerically at the per-mille level with independent Monte Carlo programs, such as HORACE and SANC. It has been used as a basic tool for developing and testing some new methods of precise measurements of the Standard Model parameters at the LHC, in particular the W-boson mass. Recently, it has been applied to simulations of double Drell-Yan processes resulting from double-parton scattering, in order to assess their influence on the Higgs-boson detection at the LHC in its ZZ and W+W- decay channels.

Inclusion of the QCD next-to-leading order corrections in the quark-gluon Monte Carlo shower

Methodology of including QCD NLO corrections in the quark--gluon Monte Carlo shower is outlined. The work concentrates on two issues: (i) constructing leading order (LO) parton shower Monte Carlo from scratch, such that it rigorously extends collinear factorization into the exclusive (fully unintegrated) one which we call the Monte Carlo factorization scheme; (ii) introducing next-to-leading-order (NLO) corrections to the hard process in this new environment. The presented solution is designed to be extended to the full NLO level Monte Carlo, including NLO corrections not only in the hard process but in the whole shower. The issue of the difference between the factorization scheme implemented in the Monte Carlo (MC) solution and the standard MSbar scheme is addressed. The principal MC implementation is designed for the electroweak boson production process at the LHC, but in order to discuss universality -- process independence, the deep inelastic lepton--hadron scaterring is also brought into the MC framework.

KK MC 4.22: CEEX EW Corrections for f\bar{f}\rightarrow f'\bar{f'} at LHC and Muon Colliders

We present the upgrade of the coherent exclusive (CEEX) exponentiation realization of the Yennie-Frautschi-Suura (YFS) theory used in our Monte Carlo ({\cal KK} MC) to the processes f\bar{f}\rightarrow f'\bar{f'}, f=μ,τ,q,ν_\ell, f'=e,μ,τ,q,ν_\ell, q=u,d,s,c,b,t, \ell=e,μ,τwith f\ne f', with an eye toward the precision physics of the LHC and possible high energy muon colliders. We give a brief summary of the CEEX theory in comparison to the older (EEX) exclusive exponentiation theory and illustrate theoretical results relevant to the LHC and possible muon collider physics programs.

NLO corrections in the initial-state parton shower Monte Carlo

The decade-old technique of combining NLO-corrected hard process with LO-level parton shower Monte Carlo is now mature and used in practice of the QCD calculations in the LHC data analysis. The next step, its extension to an NNLO-corrected hard process combined with the NLO-level parton shower Monte Carlo, will require development of the latter component. It does not exist yet in a complete form. In this note we describe recent progress in developing the NLO parton shower for the initial-state hadron beams. The technique of adding NLO corrections in the fully exclusive form (defined in recent years) is now simplified and tested numerically, albeit for a limited set of NLO diagrams in the evolution kernels.

Virtual Corrections to the NLO Splitting Functions for Monte Carlo: the non-singlet case

Construction of a QCD cascade at the NLO level requires recalculation of the splitting functions in a different manner [1]. We describe the calculation of some of the virtual contributions to the non-singlet splitting function. In order to be compatible with the earlier calculated real contributions [2], the principal value prescription for regularizing the infrared singularities must be used in a new way. We illustrate this new scheme on simple examples. For the calculations we wrote a Mathematica package called Axiloop. We describe its current status.

NLO corrections to hard process in QCD shower -- proof of concept

The concept of new methodology of adding QCD NLO corrections in the initial state Monte Carlo parton shower (hard process part) is tested numerically using, as an example, the process of the heavy boson production at hadron--hadron colliders such as LHC. In spite of the use of a simplified model of the process, all presented numerical results prove convincingly that the basic concept of the new methodology works correctly in practice, that is in the numerical environment of the Monte Carlo parton shower event generator. The differences with the other well established methods, like MC@NLO and POWHEG, are briefly discussed and future refinements of the implementation of the new method are also outlined.

Despite the simplified model of the process, presented numerical results prove that the basic concept of the new methodology works correctly in the numerical environment of the Monte Carlo parton shower event generator. The presented method is an alternative to the well established methods, MC@NLO and POWHEG. Refinements of the new method with better computer CPU time efficiency are also discussed.

Colour coherence of soft gluons in the fully unintegrated NLO singlet kernels

Feynman diagrams with two real partons contributing to the next-to-leading-order singlet gluon-quark DGLAP kernel are analysed. The infra-red singularities of unintegrated distributions are examined numerically. The analytical formulae are also given in some cases. The role of the colour coherence effects is found to be crucial for cancellations of the double- and single-logarithmic infra-red singularities.

NLO evolution kernels: Monte Carlo versus MSbar

We investigate the differences between the NLO evolution kernels in the Curci-Furmanski-Petronzio (CFP) and Monte Carlo (MC) factorization schemes for the non-singlet case. We examine the influence of the choice of the factorization scale in the MC scheme (given by the upper phase space limit) on the evolution kernels in this scheme.

Two real parton contributions to non-singlet kernels for exclusive QCD DGLAP evolution

Results for the two real parton differential distributions needed for implementing a next-to-leading order (NLO) parton shower Monte Carlo are presented. They are also integrated over the phase space in order to provide solid numerical control of the MC codes and for the discussion of the differences between the standard $\bar{MS}$ factorization and Monte Carlo implementation at the level of inclusive NLO evolution kernels. Presented results cover the class of non-singlet diagrams entering into NLO kernels. The classic work of Curci-Furmanski-Pertonzio was used as a guide in the calculations.

Exclusive Monte Carlo modelling of NLO DGLAP evolution

The next-to-leading order (NLO) evolution of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) in QCD is a common tool in the lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron collider data analysis. The standard NLO DGLAP evolution is formulated for inclusive (integrated) PDFs and done using inclusive NLO kernels. We report here on the ongoing project, called KRKMC, in which NLO DGLAP evolution is performed for the exclusive multiparton (fully unintegrated) distributions (ePDFs) with the help of the exclusive kernels. These kernels are calculated within the two-parton phase space for the non-singlet evolution, using Curci-Furmanski-Petronzio factorization scheme. The multiparton distribution, with multiple use of the exclusive NLO kernels, is implemented in the Monte Carlo program simulating multi-gluon emission from single quark emitter. High statistics tests ($\sim 10^{10}$ events) show that the new scheme works perfectly well in practice and, at the inclusive (integrated) level, is equivalent with the traditional inclusive NLO DGLAP evolution. Once completed, this new technique is aimed as a building block for the new more precise NLO parton shower Monte Carlo, for W/Z production at LHC and for ep scattering, as well as a starting point for other perturbative QCD based Monte Carlo projects.

MCdevelop - the universal framework for Stochastic Simulations

We present MCdevelop, a universal computer framework for developing and exploiting the wide class of Stochastic Simulations (SS) software. This powerful universal SS software development tool has been derived from a series of scientific projects for precision calculations in high energy physics (HEP), which feature a wide range of functionality in the SS software needed for advanced precision Quantum Field Theory calculations for the past LEP experiments and for the ongoing LHC experiments at CERN, Geneva. MCdevelop is a "spin-off" product of HEP to be exploited in other areas, while it will still serve to develop new SS software for HEP experiments. Typically SS involve independent generation of large sets of random "events", often requiring considerable CPU power. Since SS jobs usually do not share memory it makes them easy to parallelize. The efficient development, testing and running in parallel SS software requires a convenient framework to develop software source code, deploy and monitor batch jobs, merge and analyse results from multiple parallel jobs, even before the production runs are terminated. Throughout the years of development of stochastic simulations for HEP, a sophisticated framework featuring all the above mentioned functionality has been implemented. MCdevelop represents its latest version, written mostly in C++ (GNU compiler gcc). It uses Autotools to build binaries (optionally managed within the KDevelop 3.5.3 Integrated Development Environment (IDE) ). It uses the open-source ROOT package for histogramming, graphics and the mechanism of persistency for the C++ objects. MCdevelop helps to run multiple parallel jobs on any computer cluster with NQS-type batch system.

Monte Carlo modelling of NLO DGLAP QCD evolution in the fully unintegrated form

We are reporting on the ongoing effort of the Monte Carlo (MC) modelling of NLO DGLAP QCD evolution in the fully unintegrated form. The resulting parton shower MC is performing on its own the NLO QCD evolution, contrary to all known programs of this kind which are limited to LO level only. We overview this new MC scheme, for the non-singlet subset of the gluonstrahlung diagrams. Precision numerical tests of this new scheme are also shown.

Monte Carlo modelling of NLO DGLAP QCD Evolution in the fully unintegrated form

Presently available perturbative QCD calculations combining hard process matrix element with the Parton Shower Monte Carlo programs feature hard process matrix element calculated often beyond the leading order (LO), that is including complete next-to-leading-order (NLO), or even next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) corrections, while Parton Shower is only at the leading order (LO). We report here on a work in progress which demonstrate feasibility of constructing Parton Shower Monte Carlo (PSMC) featuring complete NLO corrections to QCD evolution with respect to the logarithm of the factorization scale. This effort presently covers non-singlet subset of Feynman diagrams contributing to the above QCD evolution. It should be stressed that our approach to the NLO QCD evolution is exclusive, that is giving insight into the fully unintegrated phase space. However, at the inclusive level our implementation agrees exactly with the standard inclusive picture of the NLO DGLAP evolution. Our new approach (after including NLO singlet diagrams) provides a complete method of combining the resummed and fixed order perturbative QCD calculations beyond the LO in a form suitable for the MC implementation, an alternative to the existing ones. First practical applications will include Monte Carlo generators for W/Z production processes in hadron-hadron colliders and lepton-hadron colliders.

Properties of inclusive versus exclusive QCD evolution kernels

We investigate the role of the choice of the upper phase space limit Q in the Curci-Furmanski-Petronzio (CFP) factorization scheme, which exploits dimensional regularization MS scheme. We examine how the choice of Q influences the evaluation of the standard DGLAP (inclusive) evolution kernels, gaining experience needed in the construction of the exclusive Monte Carlo modelling of the NLO DGLAP evolution. In particular, we uncover three types of mechanisms which assure the independence on Q of the inclusive DGLAP kernels calculated in the CFP scheme. We use the examples of three types of the Feynman diagrams to illustrate our analysis.

Quest for precision in hadronic cross sections at low energy: Monte Carlo tools vs. experimental data

We present the achievements of the last years of the experimental and theoretical groups working on hadronic cross section measurements at the low energy e+e- colliders in Beijing, Frascati, Ithaca, Novosibirsk, Stanford and Tsukuba and on tau decays. We sketch the prospects in these fields for the years to come. We emphasise the status and the precision of the Monte Carlo generators used to analyse the hadronic cross section measurements obtained as well with energy scans as with radiative return, to determine luminosities and tau decays. The radiative corrections fully or approximately implemented in the various codes and the contribution of the vacuum polarisation are discussed.

Solving QCD evolution equations in rapidity space with Markovian Monte Carlo

This work covers methodology of solving QCD evolution equation of the parton distribution using Markovian Monte Carlo (MMC) algorithms in a class of models ranging from DGLAP to CCFM. One of the purposes of the above MMCs is to test the other more sophisticated Monte Carlo programs, the so-called Constrained Monte Carlo (CMC) programs, which will be used as a building block in the parton shower MC. This is why the mapping of the evolution variables (eikonal variable and evolution time) into four-momenta is also defined and tested. The evolution time is identified with the rapidity variable of the emitted parton. The presented MMCs are tested independently, with ~0.1% precision, against the non-MC program APCheb especially devised for this purpose.

Constrained MC for QCD evolution with rapidity ordering and minimum kT

With the imminent start of LHC experiments, development of phenomenological tools, and in particular the Monte Carlo programs and algorithms, becomes urgent. A new algorithm for the generation of a parton shower initiated by the single initial hadron beam is presented. The new algorithm is of the class of the so called ``constrained MC'' type algorithm (an alternative to the backward evolution MC algorithm), in which the energy and the type of the parton at the end of the parton shower are constrained (predefined). The complete kinematics configurations with explicitly constructed four momenta are generated and tested. Evolution time is identical with rapidity and minimum transverse momentum is used as an infrared cut-off. All terms of the leading-logarithmic approximation in the DGLAP evolution are properly accounted for. In addition, the essential improvements towards the so-called CCFM/BFKL models are also properly implemented. The resulting parton distributions are cross-checked up to the 0.1% precision level with the help of a multitude of comparisons with other MC and non-MC programs. We regard these tests as an important asset to be exploited at the time when the presented MC will enter as a building block in a larger MC program for W/Z production process at LHC.

Hierarchically Organized Iterative Solutions of the Evolution Equations in QCD

The task of Monte Carlo simulation of the evolution of the parton distributions in QCD and of constructing new parton shower Monte Carlo algorithms requires new way of organizing solutions of the QCD evolution equations, in which quark-gluon transitions on one hand and quark-quark or gluon-gluon transitions (pure gluonstrahlung) on the other hand, are treated separately and differently. This requires certain reorganization of the iterative solutions of the QCD evolution equations and leads to what we refer to as a hierarchic iterative solutions of the evolution equations. We present three formal derivations of such a solution. Results presented here are already used in the other recent works to formulate new MC algorithms for the parton-shower-like implementations of the QCD evolution equations. They are primarily of the non-Markovian type. However, such a solution can be used for the Markovian-type MCs as well. We also comment briefly on the relation of the presented formalism to similar methods used in other branches of physics.

Markovian Monte Carlo solutions of the one-loop CCFM equations

A systematic extension of the Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm, that solves the DGLAP equation, into the so-called the one-loop CCFM evolution is presented. Modifications are related to a z-dependent coupling constant; transverse momentum dependence is added to the x-dependence of the parton distributions. The presented Markovian algorithm for one-loop CCFM evolution is the first step in extending it to other more sophisticated schemes beyond DGLAP. In particular, implementing the complete CCFM will be the next step. The presently implemented one-loop CCFM option will be a useful tool in testing the forthcoming MC solutions. Numerical results of the new MC are confronted with other non-MC numerical solutions. The agreement within the MC statistical error of ~0.1% is found. Also, numerical results for kT-dependent structure functions are presented.

Solving the QCD NLO evolution equations with a Markovian Monte Carlo

We discuss precision Monte Carlo (MC) calculations for solving the QCD evolution equations up to the next-to-leading-order (NLO) level. They employ forward Markovian Monte Carlo algorithms, which provide rigorous solutions of the above equations. These algorithms are implemented in the form of the Monte Carlo program EvolFMC. This program has been cross-checked with independent, non-MC, programs (QCDNum16 and APCheb33) and the numerical agreement at the level of 0.1% has been found.

Tevatron-for-LHC Report: Top and Electroweak Physics

The top quark and electroweak bosons (W and Z) represent the most massive fundamental particles yet discovered, and as such refer directly to the Standard Model's greatest remaining mystery: the mechanism by which all particles gained mass. This report summarizes the work done within the top-ew group of the Tevatron-for-LHC workshop. It represents a collection of both Tevatron results, and LHC predictions. The hope is that by considering and comparing both machines, the LHC program can be improved and aided by knowledge from the Tevatron, and that particle physics as a whole can be enriched. The report includes measurements of the top quark mass, searches for single top quark production, and physics of the electroweak bosons at hadron colliders.

Markovian Monte Carlo solutions of the NLO QCD evolution equations

We present precision Monte Carlo calculations solving the QCD evolution equations up to the next-to-leading-order (NLO) level. They employ forward Markovian Monte Carlo (FMC) algorithms, which provide the rigorous solutions of the QCD evolution equations. Appropriate Monte Carlo algorithms are described in detail. They are implemented in the form of the Monte Carlo program EvolFMC, which features the NLO kernels for the QCD evolution. The presented numerical results agree with those from independent, non-MC, programs (QCDNum16, APCheb33) at the level of 0.1%. In this way we have demonstrated the feasibility of the precision MC calculations for the QCD evolution and provided very useful numerical tests (benchmarks) for other, non-Markovian, MC algorithms developed recently.

Solving constrained Markovian evolution in QCD with the help of the non-Markovian Monte Carlo

We present the constrained Monte Carlo (CMC) algorithm for the QCD evolution. The constraint resides in that the total longitudinal energy of the emissions in the MC and in the underlying QCD evolution is predefined (constrained). This CMC implements exactly the full DGLAP evolution of the parton distributions in the hadron with respect to the logarithm of the energy scale. The algorithm of the CMC is referred to as the non-Markovian type. The non-Markovian MC algorithm is defined as the one in which the multiplicity of emissions is chosen randomly as the first variable and not the last one, as in the Markovian MC algorithms. The former case resembles that of the fixed-order matrix element calculations. The CMC algorithm can serve as an alternative to the so-called backward evolution Markovian algorithm of Sjostrand, which is used for modelling the initial-state parton shower in modern QCD MC event generators. We test practical feasibility and efficiency of our CMC implementation in a series of numerical exercises, comparing its results with those from other MC and non-MC programs, in a wide range of Q and x, down to the 0.1% precision level. In particular, satisfactory numerical agreement is found with the results of the Markovian MC program of our own and the other non-MC program. The efficiency of the new constrained MC is found to be quite good.

Non-Markovian Monte Carlo Algorithm for the Constrained Markovian Evolution in QCD

We revisit the challenging problem of finding an efficient Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm solving the constrained evolution equations for the initial-state QCD radiation. The type of the parton (quark, gluon) and the energy fraction x of the parton exiting emission chain (entering hard process) are predefined, i.e. constrained throughout the evolution. Such a constraint is mandatory for any realistic MC for the initial state QCD parton shower. We add one important condition: the MC algorithm must not require the a priori knowledge of the full numerical exact solutions of the evolution equations, as is the case in the popular ``Markovian MC for backward evolution''. Our aim is to find at least one solution of this problem that would function in practice. Finding such a solution seems to be definitely within the reach of the currently available computer CPUs and the sophistication of the modern MC techniques. We describe in this work the first example of an efficient solution of this kind. Its numerical implementation is still restricted to the pure gluon-strahlung. As expected, it is not in the class of the so-called Markovian MCs. For this reason we refer to it as belonging to a class of non-Markovian MCs. We show that numerical results of our new MC algorithm agree very well (to 0.2%) with the results of the other MC program of our own (unconstrained Markovian) and another non-MC program QCDnum16. This provides a proof of the existence of the new class of MC techniques, to be exploited in the precision perturbative QCD calculations for the Large Hadron Collider.

New Results on Precision Studies of Heavy Vector Boson Physics

We present new results for two important heavy vector boson physics processes: (1), virtual corrections to hard bremsstrahlung which are relevant to precision predictions for the radiative return process in Z boson production at and beyond LEP2 energies ; and, (2), electric charge screening effects in single W production with finite p_T, multiple photon radiation in high energy collider physics processes. In both cases we show that we improve the respective precision tag significantly. Phenomenological implications are discussed.

Threshold Corrections in Precision LHC Physics: QED otimes QCD

With an eye toward LHC processes in which theoretical precisions of 1 percent are desired, we introduce the theory of the simultaneous YFS resummation of QED and QCD to compute the size of the expected resummed soft radiative threshold effects in precision studies of heavy particle production at the LHC. Our results show that both QED and QCD soft threshold effects must be controlled to be on the conservative side to achieve such precision goals.

Precision Predictions for (Un)Stable WW/4f Production in e +e- Annihilation: YFSWW3/KoralW-1.42/YFSZZ

We present precision calculations of the processes e+ e- -> 4-fermions in which the double resonant W+ W- and ZZ intermediate states occur. Referring to these latter intermediate states as the 'signal processes', we show that, by using the YFS Monte Carlo event generators YFSWW3-1.14 and KoralW-1.42 in an appropriate combination, we achieve a physical precision on the WW signal process, as isolated with LEP2 MC Workshop cuts, below 0.5 per cent. We stress the full gauge invariance of our calculations and we compare our results with those of other authors where appropriate. In particular, sample Monte Carlo data are explicitly illustrated and compared with the results of the program RacoonWW of Denner et al. In this way, we cross check that the total (physical oplus technical) precision tag for the WW signal process cross section is 0.4 per cent for 200 GeV, for example. Results are also given for 500 GeV with an eye toward the LC. For the analogous ZZ case, we cross check that our YFSZZ calculation yields a total precision tag of 2 per cent, when it is compared to the results of ZZTO and GENTLE of Passarino and Bardin et al., respectively.

Predictions for ${\bar ν} νγ$ Production at LEP

We study predictions for the reaction $e^+e^- \to {\bar ν} ν(n γ)$. The complete one-loop corrections are taken into account and higher order contributions, in particular those for the observed real photons, are added whenever necessary. The event generator \KK MC, a general-purpose Monte Carlo generator for the process $e^+e^- \to \bar f f nγ$ based on the method of exclusive exponentiation, is used as the environment. We extend its applicability to the process $e^+e^- \to \bar ν_l ν_l nγ$, $l=e,μ,τ$, where the observation of at least a single $γ$ is required. The exponentiation is implemented in much the same way as for the s-channel process alone. In particular, all photonic effects present in the case of W exchange, which {\it cannot} be included in the s-channel exponentiation scheme, are calculated to a finite order only. The real hard photon matrix element is calculated up to ${\cal O} ({α^2})$. Leading logarithmic contributions of the two-loop corrections and one-loop photonic corrections accompanying real single photon emission are included. The electroweak corrections are calculated with the DIZET library of the ZFITTER package. Numerical tests and predictions for typical observables are presented.

The Monte Carlo Event Generator YFSWW3 version 1.16 for W-Pair Production and Decay at LEP2/LC Energies

We present the Monte Carlo event generator YFSWW3 version 1.16 for theprocess of W-pair production and decay in electron-positron collisions. It includes ${\cal O}(α)$ electroweak radiative corrections in the WW production stage together with the ${\cal O}(α^3)$ initial-state-radiation (ISR) corrections in the leading-logarithmic (LL) approximation, implemented within the Yennie-Frautschi-Suura (YFS) exclusive exponentiation framework. The photon radiation in the W decays is generated by the dedicated program PHOTOS up to ${\cal O}(α^2)$ LL, normalised to the W branching ratios. The program is interfaced with the $τ$ decay library TAUOLA and the quark fragmentation/hadronization package JETSET. The semi-analytical code KORWAN for the calculations of the differential and total cross-sections at the Born level and in the ISR approximation is included.

Coherent Exclusive Exponentiation For Precision Monte Carlo Calculations

We present the new Coherent Exclusive Exponentiation (CEEX), the older Exclusive Exponentiation (EEX) and the semi-analytical Inclusive Exponentiation (IEX) for the process $e^+e^-\to f\bar{f} +nγ$, $f=μ,τ,d,u,s,c,b$ with validity for centre of mass energies from $τ$ lepton threshold to 1TeV, that is for LEP1, LEP2, SLC, future Linear Colliders, $b,c,τ$-factories etc. They are based on Yennie-Frautschi-Suura exponentiation. In CEEX effects due to photon emission from initial beams and outgoing fermions are calculated in QED up to second-order, including all interference effects. Electroweak corrections are included in first-order, at the amplitude level. Beams can be polarized longitudinally and transversely, and all spin correlations are incorporated in an exact manner. EEX is more primitive, lacks initial-final interferences, but it is valuable for testing the newer CEEX. IEX provides us set of a sophisticated semi-analytical formulas for the total cross section and selected inclusive distributions which are mainly used for cross-checks of the MC results. We analyse numerical results at the Z-peak 189 GeV and 500 GeV for simple kinematical cuts (comparisons with IEX) and for realistic experimental cuts. Physical precision and technical precision are determined for the total cross section and for the charge asymmetry.

The Precision Monte Carlo Event Generator KK For Two-Fermion Final States In e+e- Collisions

We present the Monte Carlo event generator KK version 4.13 for precision predictions of the Electroweak Standard Model for the process $e^+e^-\to f\bar{f} +nγ$, $f=μ,τ,d,u,s,c,b$ at centre of mass energies from $τ$ lepton threshold to 1TeV, that is for LEP, SLC, future Linear Colliders, $b,c,τ$-factories etc. Effects due to photon emission from initial beams and outgoing fermions are calculated in QED up to second order, including all interference effects, within Coherent Exclusive Exponentiation (CEEX), which is based on Yennie-Frautschi-Suura exponentiation. Electroweak corrections are included in first order, with higher order extensions, using the DIZET 6.x library. Final state quarks hadronize according to the parton shower model using JETSET. Beams can be polarized longitudinally and transversely. Decay of the tau leptons is simulated using the TAUOLA library, taking into account spin polarization effects as well. In particular the complete spin correlations density matrix of the initial state beams and final state tau's is incorporated in an exact manner. Effects due to beamstrahlung are simulated in a realistic way. The main improvements with respect to KORALZ are: (a) inclusion of the initial-final state QED interference, (b) inclusion of the exact matrix element for two photons, and (c) inclusion of the transverse spin correlations in $τ$ decays (as in KORALB).

Global Positioning of Spin GPS Scheme for Half-Spin Massive Spinors

We present a simple and flexible method of keeping track of the complex phases and spin quantization axes for half-spin initial- and final-state Weyl spinors in scattering amplitudes of Standard Model high energy physics processes. Both cases of massless and massive spinors are discussed. The method is demonstrated and checked numerically for spin correlations in tau tau-bar production and decay. Its main application will be in the forthcoming work of combining effects due to multiple photon emission (exponentiation) and spin, embodied in the Monte Carlo event generators for production and decay of unstable fermions such as the tau lepton, t-quark and hypothetical new heavy particles.

Multiple Gluon Effects in Fermion--(Anti)Fermion Scattering at SSC/LHC Energies

We extend the methods of Yennie, Frautschi and Suura (YFS) to compute, via Monte Carlo methods, the effects of multiple gluon emission in the processes $q+q'\to q''+q'''+n(G)$, where $G$ is a soft gluon. We show explicitly that the infrared singularities in the respective simulations are canceled to all orders in $α_s$. Some discussion of this result from the standpoint of confinement is given. More importantly, we present, for the first time ever, sample numerical Monte Carlo data on multiple soft gluon emission in the rigorously extended YFS framework. We find that such soft gluon effects must be taken into account for precise SSC/LHC physics simulations.
