Initial state QED radiation aspects for future $e^+e^-$ colliders

This white paper concerns theoretical and phenomenological aspects relevant to the physics of future $e^+e^-$ colliders, in particular regarding initial-state QED radiation. The contributions each contain key technical aspects, and are formulated in a pedagogical manner so as to render them accessible also to those who are not directly working on these and immediately-related topics. This should help both experts and non-experts understand the theoretical challenges that we shall face at future $e^+e^-$ colliders. Specifically, this paper contains descriptions of the treatment of initial state radiation from several Monte Carlo collaborations, as well as contributions that explain a number of more theoretical developments with promise of future phenomenological impact.

New Developments in KKMChh: Quark-Level Exponentiated Radiative Corrections and Semi-analytical Results

We describe a new semi-analytical program, KKhhFoam, which provides a simplified framework for testing the amplitude-level exponentiation scheme (CEEX) of the full KKMChh program in the semi-soft limit. The structure of the KKhhFoam integrand is also helpful for elucidating the structure of CEEX. We also discuss the representation of ISR in KKMChh and compare the ISR added by KKMChh to the effect of switching to a QED-corrected PDF, at the individual quark level, and suggest a new approach to running KKMChh with QED-corrected PDFs.

ISR and IFI in Precision AFB Studies with KKMC-hh

KKMC-hh is a hadronic event generator for Z boson production and decays, which includes exponentiated multi-photon radiation and first-order electroweak corrections. We have used KKMC-hh to investigate the role of initial sate radiation (ISR) and initial-final interference (IFI) in precision electroweak analyses at the LHC. We compare the effect of this radiation on angular distributions and forward-backward asymmetry, which are particularly important for the measurement of the weak mixing angle. We discuss the relation of the ISR implementation in KKMC-hh to ISR from parton distribution functions with QED corrections.

KKMC-hh for Precision Electroweak Phenomenology at the LHC

We describe the program KKMC-hh, which calculates Z boson processes in hadronic collisions using coherent exclusive exponentiation (CEEX) with exact second-order photonic corrections at next-to-leading log and first-order weak vertex corrections, including initial and final state photonic radiation and initial-final interference. We describe current applications to precision forward-backward asymmetry calculations for the measurement of the electroweak mixing angle at the LHC.

Overview of the Path to 0.01$\%$ Theoretical Luminosity Precision for the FCCee and Its Possible Synergistic Effects for Other FCC Precision Theory Requirements

To exploit properly the precision physics program at the FCC-ee, the theoretical precision tag on the respective luminosity will need to be improved from the 0.054$\%$ (0.061$\%$) results at LEP to 0.01$\%$, where the former (latter) LEP result has (does not have) the pairs correction. We present an overview of the roads one may take to reach the required 0.01$\%$ precision tag at the FCC-ee and we discuss possible synergistic effects of the walk along these roads for other FCC precision theory requirements.

The Monte Carlo Program KKMC for the Lepton or Quark Pair Production at LEP/SLC Energies -- updates of electroweak calculations

Since the {\tt KKMC} program was published for the first time over 20 years ago, it has gained popularity and was exploited in a broad spectrum of applications. The core part of the program itself did not change much. In contrast, some of the libraries have evolved substantially. The aim of this publication is to archive four versions, alternative to the one published 20 years ago versions of the electroweak libraries (or just parameter initialization versions), which were instrumental for the precision Standard Model calculation from the end of LEP era till now and for the sake of the future applications/comparisons for the future electron-positron colliders, in particular for the FCC-ee related studies. These electroweak libraries are useful for the hadron collider applications as well, for instance for {\tt KKMC-hh} or {\tt TauSpinner} projects.

Theory for the FCC-ee : Report on the 11th FCC-ee Workshop

The Future Circular Collider (FCC) at CERN, a proposed 100-km circular facility with several colliders in succession, culminates with a 100 TeV proton-proton collider. It offers a vast new domain of exploration in particle physics, with orders of magnitude advances in terms of Precision, Sensitivity and Energy. The implementation plan foresees, as a first step, an Electroweak Factory electron-positron collider. This high luminosity facility, operating between 90 and 365 GeV centre-of-mass energy, will study the heavy particles of the Standard Model, Z, W, Higgs, and top with unprecedented accuracy. The Electroweak Factory $e^+e^-$ collider constitutes a real challenge to the theory and to precision calculations, triggering the need for the development of new mathematical methods and software tools. A first workshop in 2018 had focused on the first FCC-ee stage, the Tera-Z, and confronted the theoretical status of precision Standard Model calculations on the Z-boson resonance to the experimental demands. The second workshop in January 2019, which is reported here, extended the scope to the next stages, with the production of W-bosons (FCC-ee-W), the Higgs boson (FCC-ee-H) and top quarks (FCC-ee-tt). In particular, the theoretical precision in the determination of the crucial input parameters, alpha_QED, alpha_QCD, M_W, m_t at the level of FCC-ee requirements is thoroughly discussed. The requirements on Standard Model theory calculations were spelled out, so as to meet the demanding accuracy of the FCC-ee experimental potential. The discussion of innovative methods and tools for multi-loop calculations was deepened. Furthermore, phenomenological analyses beyond the Standard Model were discussed, in particular the effective theory approaches. The reports of 2018 and 2019 serve as white papers of the workshop results and subsequent developments.

${\cal{KK}}\text{MC-hh}$: Resummed Exact ${\cal O}(α^2L)$ EW Corrections in a Hadronic MC Event Generator

We present an improvement of the MC event generator Herwiri2, where we recall the latter MC was a prototype for the inclusion of CEEX resummed EW corrections in hadron-hadron scattering at high cms energies. In this improvement the new exact ${\cal O}(α^2L)$ resummed EW generator ${\cal{KK}}$ MC 4.22, featuring as it does the CEEX realization of resummation in the EW sector, is put in union with the Herwig parton shower environment. The {\rm LHE} format of the attendant output event file means that all other conventional parton shower environments are available to the would-be user of the resulting new MC. For this reason (and others -- see the text) we henceforth refer to the new improvement of the Herwiri2 MC as ${\cal{KK}}\text{MC-hh}$. Since this new MC features exact ${\cal O}(α)$ pure weak corrections from the DIZET EW library and features the CEEX and the EEX YFS-style resummation of large multiple photon effects, it provides already the concrete path to 0.05\% precision on such effects if we focus on the EW effects themselves. We therefore show predictions for observable distributions and comparisons with other approaches in the literature. This MC represents an important step in the realization of the exact amplitude-based $QED\otimes QCD$ resummation paradigm. Independently of this latter observation, the MC rigorously quantifies important EW effects in the current LHC experiments.

Hard Corrections in Precision QCD for LHC and FCC Physics: A New Approach

With an eye toward the usual unphysical divergence of hard fixed-order corrections in predictions for the processes probed in high energy colliding hadron beam devices as one approaches the soft limit, we present a new approach to the realization of such corrections, with some emphasis on the LHC and the future FCC devices. We show that the respective divergence is removed in our approach. This means that we would render the standard results to be closer to the observed exclusive distributions. While we stress that the approach has general applicability, we use the single Z and virtual gamma production and decay to lepton pairs as our prototypical example. Accordingly, our work opens another part of the way to rigorous baselines for the determination of the theoretical precision tags for LHC physics, with an attendant generalization to the future FCC.

HERWIRI2.1: Electroweak Corrections for Hadron Scattering

We describe the program HERWIRI2.1, which implements order alpha-squared photonic radiative corrections exponentiated at the amplitude level (initial state, final state, and initial-final interference) and electroweak corrections to the matrix element by generating events using the KK Monte Carlo to generate the hard process, with quark initial states generated according to PDFs via an LHAPDF interface. The events can be showered internally using HERWIG6.5 or exported and showered using any desired external showering program. Some early results are shown, including comparisons to HERWIG6.5 and HORACE 3.1.

Einstein-Heisenberg Consistency Condition Interplay with Cosmological Constant Prediction in Resummed Quantum Gravity

We argue that our recent success in using our resummed quantum gravity approach to Einstein's general theory of relativity, in the context of the Planck scale cosmology formulation of Bonanno and Reuter, to estimate the value of the cosmological constant Λsupports the use of quantum mechanical consistency requirements to constrain the main uncertainty in that very promising result. This main uncertainty, which is due to the uncertainty in the value of the time t_{\text{tr}} at which the transition from the Planck scale cosmology to the FRW model occurs, is shown to be reduced, by requiring consistency between the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and the known properties of the solutions of Einstein's equations, from four orders of magnitude to the level of a factor of {\cal O}(10). This lends more credibility to the over-all resummed quantum gravity approach itself, in general, and to our estimate of $Λ$ in particular.

Interplay between IR-Improved DGLAP-CS Theory and the Precision of an NLO ME Matched Parton Shower MC in Relation to LHCb Data

We use comparison with recent LHCb data on single Z/γ^* production and decay to lepton pairs as a vehicle to study the current status of the application of our approach of {\it exact} amplitude-based resummation in quantum field theory to precision QCD calculations, by realistic MC event generator methods, as needed for precision LHC physics. This represents an extension of the phase space of our previous studies based on comparison with CMS and ATLAS data, as the pseudo-rapidity range measured by the LHCb for leptons in the data we study is 2.0<η< 4.5 to be compared with |η|<4.6(2.4) in our previous CMS(ATLAS) data comparison for the same processes. The analyses we present here with the LHCb data thus represent an important addition to our previous results, as it is essential that theoretical predictions be able to control all of the measured phase space at LHC. The level of agreement between the new theory and the data continues to be a reason for optimism.

IR-Improved DGLAP-CS QCD Parton Showers in Pythia8

We introduce the recently developed IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory into the showers in Pythia8, as this Monte Carlo event generator is in wide use at LHC. We show that, just as it was true in the IR-improved shower Monte Carlo Herwiri, which realizes the IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory in the Herwig6.5 environment, the soft limit in processes such as single heavy gauge boson production is now more physical in the IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory version of Pythia8. This opens the way to one's getting a comparison between the actual detector simulations for some of the LHC experiments between IR-improved and unimproved showers as Pythia8 is used in detector simulations at LHC whereas Herwig6.5, the environment of the only other IR-improved DGLAP-CS QCD MC in the literature, Herwiri1.031, is not any longer so used. Our achieving the availability of the IR-improved DGLAP-CS Pythia8 then is an important step in the further development of the LHC precision theory program under development by the author and his collaborators.

Prediction for the Cosmological Constant in Resummed Quantum Gravity and Constraints on SUSY GUT's

We use our resummed quantum gravity approach to Einstein's general theory of relativity in the context of the Planck scale cosmology formulation of Bonanno and Reuter to estimate the value of the cosmological constant such that ρ_Λ=(0.0024 eV)^4. We argue that the closeness of this estimate to experiment constrains susy GUT models. We discuss in turn various theoretical issues that have been raised about the approach itself as well as about the application to estimate the cosmological constant. Given the closeness of the estimate to the currently observed value, we also discuss the theoretical uncertainty in the estimate -- at this time, we argue it is still large.

Current Status of LHC Physics: Precision Theory View

We discuss the current status of LHC physics from the perspective of precision theory predictions for the attendant QCD and EW higher order corrections. We focus on the interplay between the available data and the predictions for these data viewed in the context of the establishment of baselines for what is needed to exploit fully the discovery potential of the existing LHC data and the data expected by the end of the second LHC run (i.e., 300fb$^{-1}$). We conclude that significant improvement in the currently used theoretical predictions will be mandatory. Possible strategies to achieve such improvement are indicated.

An Estimate of Lambda in Resummed Quantum Gravity in the Context of Asymptotic Safety and Planck Scale Cosmology: Constraints on SUSY GUTS

We use the amplitude-based resummation of Feynman`s formulation of Einstein`s theory to arrive at a UV finite approach to quantum gravity. We show that we recover the UV fixed point recently claimed by the exact field-space renormalization group approach. We use our approach in the context of the attendant Planck scale cosmology formulation of Bonanno and Reuter to estimate the value of the cosmological constant as ρ_Λ=(0.0024 eV)^4. We show that the closeness of this estimate to experiment constrains susy GUT models.

An Estimate of Λin Resummed Quantum Gravity in the Context of Asymptotic Safety

We show that, by using recently developed exact resummation techniques based on the extension of the methods of Yennie, Frautschi and Suura to Feynman's formulation of Einstein's theory, we get quantum field theoretic descriptions for the UV fixed-point behaviors of the dimensionless gravitational and cosmological constants postulated by Weinberg. Connecting our work to the attendant phenomenological asymptotic safety analysis of Planck scale cosmology by Bonanno and Reuter, we estimate the value of the cosmological constant Λ. We find the encouraging estimate ρ_Λ\equiv \fracΛ{8πG_N} \simeq (2.4\times 10^{-3}eV)^4. While this numerical value is close to recent experimental observations, we caution the reader that the estimate involves a number of model parameters that still possess significant levels of uncertainty, such as the value of the transition time between the Planck scale cosmology era and the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker radiation dominated era, where our current understanding allows for at least two orders of magnitude in its uncertainty and this would change our estimate of ρ_Λby at least four orders of magnitude. We discuss such theoretical uncertainties as well. We show why GUT and EW scale vacuum energies from spontaneous symmetry breaking are suppressed in our approach to the estimation of ρ_Λ. As a bonus, we show how our estimate constrains susy GUTS.

We discuss recent results as they relate to the interplay of the attendant IR-Improved DGLAP-CS theory of one of us and the precision of exact NLO matrix-element matched parton shower MC's in the Herwig6.5 environment as determined by comparison to recent LHC experimental observations on single heavy gauge boson production and decay. The level of agreement between the new theory and the data continues to be a reason for optimism. Estimates of Radiation by Superluminal Neutrinos

We show that the more energetic superluminal neutrinos with quadratically dispersed superluminalities δ=β^2-1, for β=v/c where v is the neutrino velocity, also lose significant energy to radiation to the ν+e^-+e^+ final state in travelling from CERN to Gran Sasso as has been shown to occur for those with constant superluminality by Cohen and Glashow if indeed δ\simeq 5\times 10^{-5}. In addition, we clarify the dependence of such radiative processes on the size of the superluminality.

New Approach to GUTs

We introduce a new string-inspired approach to the subject of grand unification which allows the GUT scale to be small, \lesssim 200 TeV, so that it is within the reach of {\em conceivable} laboratory accelerated colliding beam devices. The key ingredient is a novel use of the heterotic string symmetry group physics ideas to render baryon number violating effects small enough to have escaped detection to date. This part of the approach involves new unknown parameters to be tested experimentally. A possible hint at the existence of these new parameters may already exist in the EW precision data comparisons with the SM expectations.

The Epsilon Expansion of Feynman Diagrams via Hypergeometric Functions and Differential Reduction

Higher-order diagrams required for radiative corrections to mixed electroweak and QCD processes at the LHC and anticipated future colliders will require numerically stable representations of the associated Feynman diagrams. The hypergeometric representation supplies an analytic framework that is useful for deriving such stable representations. We discuss the reduction of Feynman diagrams to master integrals, and compare integration-by-parts methods to differential reduction of hypergeometric functions. We describe the problem of constructing higher-order terms in the epsilon expansion, and characterize the functions generated in such expansions.

Planck Scale Cosmology and Asymptotic Safety in Resummed Quantum Gravity

In Weinberg's asymptotic safety approach, a finite dimensional critical surface for a UV stable fixed point generates a theory of quantum gravity with a finite number of physical parameters. We argue that, in an extension of Feynman's original formulation of the theory, we recover this fixed-point UV behavior from an exact re-arrangement of the respective perturbative series. Our results are consistent with the exact field space Wilsonian renormalization group results of Reuter {\it et al.} and with recent Hopf- algebraic Dyson-Schwinger renormalization theory results of Kreimer. We obtain the first "first principles" predictions of the dimensionless gravitational and cosmological constants and our results support the Planck scale cosmology of Bonanno and Reuter. We conclude with an estimate for the currently observed value of the cosmological constant.

Quest for precision in hadronic cross sections at low energy: Monte Carlo tools vs. experimental data

The radiative corrections fully or approximately implemented in the various codes and the contribution of the vacuum polarisation are discussed.

IR-Improved DGLAP Theory: Kernels, Parton Distributions, Reduced Cross Sections

It is shown that exact, amplitude-based resummation allows IR-improvement of the usual DGLAP theory. This results in a new set of kernels, parton distributions and attendant reduced cross sections, so that the QCD perturbative result for the respective hadron-hadron or lepton-hadron cross section is unchanged order-by-order in $α_s$ at large squared-momentum transfers. We compare these new objects with their usual counter-parts and illustrate the effects of the IR-improvement in some phenomenological cases of interest with an eye toward precision applications in LHC physics scenarios.

New Results on Precision Studies of Heavy Vector Boson Physics

We present new results for two important heavy vector boson physics processes: (1), virtual corrections to hard bremsstrahlung which are relevant to precision predictions for the radiative return process in Z boson production at and beyond LEP2 energies ; and, (2), electric charge screening effects in single W production with finite p_T, multiple photon radiation in high energy collider physics processes. In both cases we show that we improve the respective precision tag significantly. Phenomenological implications are discussed.

Threshold Corrections in Precision LHC Physics: QED otimes QCD

With an eye toward LHC processes in which theoretical precisions of 1 percent are desired, we introduce the theory of the simultaneous YFS resummation of QED and QCD to compute the size of the expected resummed soft radiative threshold effects in precision studies of heavy particle production at the LHC. Our results show that both QED and QCD soft threshold effects must be controlled to be on the conservative side to achieve such precision goals.

Precision Predictions for (Un)Stable WW/4f Production in e +e- Annihilation: YFSWW3/KoralW-1.42/YFSZZ

We present precision calculations of the processes e+ e- -> 4-fermions in which the double resonant W+ W- and ZZ intermediate states occur. Referring to these latter intermediate states as the 'signal processes', we show that, by using the YFS Monte Carlo event generators YFSWW3-1.14 and KoralW-1.42 in an appropriate combination, we achieve a physical precision on the WW signal process, as isolated with LEP2 MC Workshop cuts, below 0.5 per cent. We stress the full gauge invariance of our calculations and we compare our results with those of other authors where appropriate. In particular, sample Monte Carlo data are explicitly illustrated and compared with the results of the program RacoonWW of Denner et al. In this way, we cross check that the total (physical oplus technical) precision tag for the WW signal process cross section is 0.4 per cent for 200 GeV, for example. Results are also given for 500 GeV with an eye toward the LC. For the analogous ZZ case, we cross check that our YFSZZ calculation yields a total precision tag of 2 per cent, when it is compared to the results of ZZTO and GENTLE of Passarino and Bardin et al., respectively.

Size of Penguin Pollution of the CKM CP Violating Phase in B-bar_s -> rho K_s

We use the perturbative QCD methods of Lepage and Brodsky to calculate the rate for B-bar_s -> rho K_s, with an eye toward the CP violating unitarity triangle angle gamma. We show that, although the penguins are large, there are regions of the allowed parameter space of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix wherein gamma is measurable in the sense that penguins change the value of sin(2gamma) one would extract from the attendant time dependent asymmetry measurement by less than 29 per cent, so that a 3sigma measurement of sin(2gamma) as being different from 0 is allowed by the corresponding theoretical uncertainty. This would establish CP violation in B_s decays. The rates which we find tend to favor the type of luminosities now envisioned for hadron-based B-factories.

The Monte Carlo Event Generator YFSWW3 version 1.16 for W-Pair Production and Decay at LEP2/LC Energies

We present the Monte Carlo event generator YFSWW3 version 1.16 for theprocess of W-pair production and decay in electron-positron collisions. It includes ${\cal O}(α)$ electroweak radiative corrections in the WW production stage together with the ${\cal O}(α^3)$ initial-state-radiation (ISR) corrections in the leading-logarithmic (LL) approximation, implemented within the Yennie-Frautschi-Suura (YFS) exclusive exponentiation framework. The photon radiation in the W decays is generated by the dedicated program PHOTOS up to ${\cal O}(α^2)$ LL, normalised to the W branching ratios. The program is interfaced with the $τ$ decay library TAUOLA and the quark fragmentation/hadronization package JETSET. The semi-analytical code KORWAN for the calculations of the differential and total cross-sections at the Born level and in the ISR approximation is included.

Coherent Exclusive Exponentiation For Precision Monte Carlo Calculations

We present the new Coherent Exclusive Exponentiation (CEEX), the older Exclusive Exponentiation (EEX) and the semi-analytical Inclusive Exponentiation (IEX) for the process $e^+e^-\to f\bar{f} +nγ$, $f=μ,τ,d,u,s,c,b$ with validity for centre of mass energies from $τ$ lepton threshold to 1TeV, that is for LEP1, LEP2, SLC, future Linear Colliders, $b,c,τ$-factories etc. They are based on Yennie-Frautschi-Suura exponentiation. In CEEX effects due to photon emission from initial beams and outgoing fermions are calculated in QED up to second-order, including all interference effects. Electroweak corrections are included in first-order, at the amplitude level. Beams can be polarized longitudinally and transversely, and all spin correlations are incorporated in an exact manner. EEX is more primitive, lacks initial-final interferences, but it is valuable for testing the newer CEEX. IEX provides us set of a sophisticated semi-analytical formulas for the total cross section and selected inclusive distributions which are mainly used for cross-checks of the MC results. We analyse numerical results at the Z-peak 189 GeV and 500 GeV for simple kinematical cuts (comparisons with IEX) and for realistic experimental cuts. Physical precision and technical precision are determined for the total cross section and for the charge asymmetry.

The Precision Monte Carlo Event Generator KK For Two-Fermion Final States In e+e- Collisions

We present the Monte Carlo event generator KK version 4.13 for precision predictions of the Electroweak Standard Model for the process $e^+e^-\to f\bar{f} +nγ$, $f=μ,τ,d,u,s,c,b$ at centre of mass energies from $τ$ lepton threshold to 1TeV, that is for LEP, SLC, future Linear Colliders, $b,c,τ$-factories etc. Effects due to photon emission from initial beams and outgoing fermions are calculated in QED up to second order, including all interference effects, within Coherent Exclusive Exponentiation (CEEX), which is based on Yennie-Frautschi-Suura exponentiation. Electroweak corrections are included in first order, with higher order extensions, using the DIZET 6.x library. Final state quarks hadronize according to the parton shower model using JETSET. Beams can be polarized longitudinally and transversely. Decay of the tau leptons is simulated using the TAUOLA library, taking into account spin polarization effects as well. In particular the complete spin correlations density matrix of the initial state beams and final state tau's is incorporated in an exact manner. Effects due to beamstrahlung are simulated in a realistic way. The main improvements with respect to KORALZ are: (a) inclusion of the initial-final state QED interference, (b) inclusion of the exact matrix element for two photons, and (c) inclusion of the transverse spin correlations in $τ$ decays (as in KORALB).

Global Positioning of Spin GPS Scheme for Half-Spin Massive Spinors

We present a simple and flexible method of keeping track of the complex phases and spin quantization axes for half-spin initial- and final-state Weyl spinors in scattering amplitudes of Standard Model high energy physics processes. Both cases of massless and massive spinors are discussed. The method is demonstrated and checked numerically for spin correlations in tau tau-bar production and decay. Its main application will be in the forthcoming work of combining effects due to multiple photon emission (exponentiation) and spin, embodied in the Monte Carlo event generators for production and decay of unstable fermions such as the tau lepton, t-quark and hypothetical new heavy particles.

Multiple Gluon Effects in Fermion--(Anti)Fermion Scattering at SSC/LHC Energies

We extend the methods of Yennie, Frautschi and Suura (YFS) to compute, via Monte Carlo methods, the effects of multiple gluon emission in the processes $q+q'\to q''+q'''+n(G)$, where $G$ is a soft gluon. We show explicitly that the infrared singularities in the respective simulations are canceled to all orders in $α_s$. Some discussion of this result from the standpoint of confinement is given. More importantly, we present, for the first time ever, sample numerical Monte Carlo data on multiple soft gluon emission in the rigorously extended YFS framework. We find that such soft gluon effects must be taken into account for precise SSC/LHC physics simulations.
