Laser-induced surface relief nanocrowns as a manifestation of nanoscale Rayleigh-Plateau hydrodynamic instability

Nanoscale hydrodynamic instability of ring-like molten rims around ablative microholes produced in nanometer-thick gold films by tightly focused nanosecond-laser pulses was experimentally explored in terms of laser pulse energy and film thickness. These parametric dependencies of basic instability characteristics - order and period of the resulting nanocrowns - were analyzed, revealing its apparently Rayleigh-Plateau character, as compared to much less consistent possible van der Waals and impact origins. Along with fundamental importance, these findings will put forward pulsed laser ablation as an alternative facile inexpensive table-top approach to study such hydrodynamic instabilities developing at nanosecond temporal and nanometer spatial scales.

Enhancement of ultrafast electron photoemission from metallic nano antennas excited by a femtosecond laser pulse

We have demonstrated for the first time that an array of nanoantennas (central nanotips inside sub-micron pits) on an aluminum surface, fabricated using a specific double-pulse femtosecond laser irradiation scheme, results in a 28-fold enhancement of the non-linear (three-photon) electron photoemission yield, driven by a third intense IR femtosecond laser pulse. The supporting numerical electrodynamic modeling indicates that the electron emission is increased not owing to a larger effective aluminum surface, but due to instant local electromagnetic field enhancement near the nanoantenna, contributed by both the tip's lightning rod effect and the focusing effect of the pit as a microreflector and annular edge as a plasmonic lens.

Plasma channels under filamentation of infrared and ultraviolet double femtosecond laser pulses

An influence of plasma channel created by a filament of focused UV or IR femtosecond laser pulse (λ=248 nm or 740 nm) on characteristics of other plasma channel formed by a femtosecond pulse at the same wavelength following the first one with varied nanosecond time delay was experimentally studied. A dependence of optical transparency of the first channel and plasma density of the second channel on the time delay was demonstrated to be quite different for such a double UV and IR femtosecond pulses.

Triggering and guiding electric discharge by a train of UV picosecond pulses combined with a long UV pulse

Non-self-sustained electric discharge and electric breakdown were triggered and guided by a train of picosecond UV pulses overlapped with a long free-running UV pulse of a hybrid Ti:Sapphire-KrF laser facility. Photocurrent sustained by this train is two orders of magnitude higher, and electric breakdown distance is twice longer than those for the discharge triggered by the long UV pulse only.
